First published in 1986, Enemy in Shadows is an updated version of one of the most iconic campaigns in RPG history.

For shipping concerns, it seems straightforward to empty the barge of wine and buy the grain on offer. If my quick math works, we'll get 50 crowns for the wine and spend 30 for the grain, adjusted for any Haggle checks we make.

15 Reiksguard, 1 steam tank, a suit of Gromril Armor and the dragon from the Imperial Zoo should do.

Or...just some trade tools with materials. I think that should be fine, because the idea of taking too much and failing sounds really bad. :p

Bookwork time!

Money to Burn:
* Company Funds - 15g 6/7
* Adelaida Personal Funds - 2g 1/0
* Landolf Personal Funds - 1g 5/2
* Ruprecht Personal Funds - 0g 17/0
Total Spending Limit: 19g 9/9

Purchases:
* Adelaida Robes - 2g
* Adelaida Religious Symbol - 0g 6/8
* Adelaida Holy Book - 1g
* Krizta Leather Jack - 0g 12/-
* Krizta Leather Leggings - 0g 14/-
* Krizta Leather Skullcap - 0g 8/-
* Krizta Rope - 0g 8/4
* Landolf Deck of Cards - 0g 1/-
* Landolf Main Gauche - 1g
* Ruprecht Leather Jack - 0g 12/-
* Ruprecht Leather Leggings - 0g 14/-
* Valghaz Trade Tools - 3g
* Valghaz Shield - 2g
Subtotal Trappings Spending: 12g 16/-

Things left out from earlier discussion:
* Hand Weapon for Valghaz because I don't know if he needs or wants one
* Helmet for Valghaz because I don't know which one he wants
* Hand Weapon for Krizta because I don't know if she needs or wants one - does her flail cover it?

We could use a confirmation on the few points above, but if all of that is right, we have 6g 13/9 remaining before Money to Burn hits. Landolf probably ought to use what he can of that to start his noble jewelry collection and anything left will go toward ship repairs (Money to Burn).

--------------------------------------------------

Shipping Funds:

The Haggle checks over the wine and wheat purchases went fairly poorly but I think we'll still come out OK. We get 50g for the wine and I believe need to spend 33g of that for the wheat. The Lucky Lady will have a full hull and we'll be ready to sail.

Because everyone is out of money, we should distribute some of what remains to make sure people have something for personal funds. Let's make it easy and give each Black Thorn 1g to have on hand, taking this shipping fund down to 12g I believe. I think that will be enough to cover fees on the way to Diesdorf, hopefully. In theory we might need people to pitch from personal funds back in.

Speaking of fees, I'd guess that our prior food stores would have gone bad or been eaten over Downtime so we'll need at least that much. A week for 6 people will be 420 denars, or 1g 15/-. So remaining ship funds are 10g 5/-. Lord Boorman's food will be handled below.

--------------------------------------------------

Lord Boorman:

We're getting 20g from the Count, but a lot of that is going to be chewed up by expenses. He expected us to spend at least half and as Aubster pointed out, we can use some of that to get things that will benefit us longer term.

* Quality Food from taverns: 2/- per meal, 6/- per day, so 1g 10/- over 5 days.
* Quality Wine for each meal: 1/8 per meal, 5/- per day, so 1g 5/- over 5 days.
* Lamp Oil for 5 days: 0g 10/-
* Lantern: 0g 12/-
* Perfume: 0g 10/-

* Quality Cutlery: 0g 7/-
* Quality Cup: 1/4
* Quality Plate: 2/-
* Quality Bowl: 2/-

Subtotal: 4g 19/4

Things I was looking for but couldn't find:

* Chest with lock & key
* Bedding (as opposed to a bedroll - in theory we could Quality a bedroll but that sounds wrong)
* Chair

Other ideas since we may have money to spend remaining:

* Writing Kit
* additional sets of Quality Cutlery/Cup/Plate/Bowl, maybe up to four
* Quality (in this case Durable or Practical rather than Fine) cleaning tools like Floor Brush & Mop

Good question. Right now he has a Miner's candle helmet (1AP, holds a candle). Picked up awhile ago...I think that it would make the most sense to have a leather skullcap under it. Would give 2AP total for the head and wouldn't give the perception penalty of having a mail coif. Seems like it would work out best for balancing perception / head protection.

Perhaps? I'm not sure. Before this game, I played older editions and we always just made armor light/medium/heavy. GM, could we get a ruling on how you'd like to handle this?

In the fine print of the armor table:

“Soft Leather can be worn without penalty under any other Armour”. So a leather skullcap is fine under anything else.

You actually got 48 Gold Crowns for the wine since the rioters took 2 barrels with them during their rampage.

Speaking of armor, this rule is something I’ve overlooked:

Critical Deflection This only occurs should you choose it to. If you suffer a Critical Wound from an incoming attack on a location protected by armour, you can choose to let your armour be damaged by 1AP in order to ignore the Critical Wound.

You still suffer all normal Wounds (and given your APs are now 1 point lower, you probably suffer an extra Wound), but you avoid the Critical Wound effects as the blow is absorbed by your now-damaged armour.

Aubster: after making the itemized purchases above, we still have something like 5 crowns to spend on making Count Boorman comfortable. Bedding is the big issue in my mind. How should we price that?

Could we also get a price for a chest with lock & key? After the Count is gone, we could use something like that to secure important items.

From my reading of the Gameplay thread, Count Boorman gave us the 10 crowns for preparation when we completed the deal. The remaining 10 crowns for getting him to Kemperbad are probably due on arrival?

Finishing up some bookwork. Everyone gets something, so take notes!

Adelaida gets: 1g personal funds, robes, religious symbol, holy book
Krizta gets: 1g personal funds, leather jack, leather leggings, leather skullcap, rope
Landolf gets: 1g personal funds, deck of cards, main gauche, 6g in jewelry
Ruprecht gets: 1g personal funds, leather jack, leather leggings
Valghaz gets: 1g personal funds, shield, leather skullcap

Food supplies: 1 week

We don't have a Company fund at the moment
Shipping fund is at 8g 5/- after corrections

Count Boorman shopping is still pending.

Just because it helps me visualize everything, I took a second to see how each character looks right now.

Ruprecht: He wears a mail shirt and coif over a suit of fine clothing complete with a cloak. He wields a sword, dagger and crossbow. A backpack holds his belongings.

Landolf wears a mail coat over fine leather armor, complete with cloak, with courtly garb and jewelry (presumably worn when not in the field). A rapier, main gauche, throwing dagger and bow are wielded. A backpack holds his belongings.

Adelaida: She wears a boiled leather breastplate with a mail coif and wields a two handed warhammer. She has a sword, axe and dagger (presumably) hanging from her belt. A pouch holds her belongings.

Krizta: She wears a full suit of hardened leather armor, with a flail, sword and dagger. She wears regular clothing beneath this and has a cloak. A backpack holds her belongings.

Valghaz wears a full suit of mail armor over leather, with a candle helmet ontop, complete with a cloak. He has a two handed pick and a dagger, along with a shield slung over his back. A sling bag holds his possessions.

---------

So we're finally a well equipped group, who actually look like a mercenary company! Or perhaps, more accurately, we look like a nobleman's bodyguards, as Landolf's equipment does look to me much like what a noble would have if he expected a dangerous journey.

Now, a quick question. Given that Valghaz has a shield, but uses a two handed weapon, does he get any armor bonus to his body if someone shoots him in the back while he has the shield slung there?

In the Companion Book to this, I found out that you can equip a luxury cabin for 125 Crowns which is kind of interesting. To buy a normal run-of-the-mill bed with associated beddings will cost 1 GC. A solid chest with a decent lock will cost 2 GC. Yes, the last 10 GC are paid once you get the Count to Kemperbad.

Adelaida would also have a symbol of Sigmar displayed proudly on her clothing or as a necklace. Krizta has a small label pin of a pair of manacles which ID's her as a member of the Bounty-Hunter's Guild.

I guess if it's a body hit from directly behind then sure the shield would help.

I'm struggling figuring out how the Crafting is supposed to work. My reading is the following:

1) It seems like it's only done as an Endeavour
2) You need the Trade Tools, the ingredients and a Workshop.
3) The ingredients typically cost 1/4 of the normal retail cost of the finished good
4) The availability of the ingredients is based on how available the the finished good is
5) To actually craft you make an Extended Test using your trade skill. The SL needed is based on how expensive the finished good is.
6) Each Endeavour you use on crafting gives you another roll towards your Extended Test.

Is this the above correct? Is there anything else towards crafting that I left out?

Assuming my understanding is correct, going to Valghaz's situation it would seem that:
1) Valghaz has the trade tools and the ingredients to make explosives due to the largess of the Witch-Hunters
2) Valghaz could set-up a work shop onboard so that's covered
3) A bomb is a Gold cost item so the Extended Test target is 15+
4) Valghaz will need to take multiple Endeavours to pass the Extended Test

Ok...so did one test. With an SL 4. So that would mean needing 11+ more. Perhaps it would be best to make this into an incendiary instead? Perhaps that would make it just 5+?

This!

An amulet. One side is the image of Grungni, and on the other is an inscription with his name and the oath taken. Functions much like dog tags in the Army.

A question: how much time passed since we meet on a riot on a Marketplatz?

Do we have a chronology (or journal) of events?

Based on Aubster's post in Gameplay, the Count has eight attendants aboard. We're crowded something fierce.

In food terms, I planned out originally for six people for seven days (420d), so our food will be disappearing fast.

If we plan instead for fourteen people for five days (700d), then we're short 280d, or 1g 3/4. Any food we catch on the way can buffer us in case the trip takes longer or just help with our food situation after we complete the journey.

Can we buy the extra food in Altdorf retroactively or do we make stops downriver?

---------

For our Outdoor Survival checks, I think Aubster said that one person making the check plus one assist was needed. Without looking closely, I think Krizta is the only one with an advance that can assist? (Outdoor Survival is on the Flagellant (Zealot) list so I assume Krizta has the adavnces.

When is it?

The year 2512

Key Dates so far:

I think you all spent about 6 months in Ubersreik, on the road, in Altdorf, on the barge before you arrived in Bogenhafen. That’d put you arriving in Ubersreik in the 9th month (Brauzeit ) of 2511 on a Marktag (market day) so say 10th day of Brauzeit.

Mitterfruhl - Spring Equinox is the day between the second and third months (Jahrdrung and Pflugzeit) and was the beginning of the Schaffenfest in Bogenhafen

6th day of Pflugzeit the festival ends

10th day of Pflugzeit you flee Bogenhafen

17th day of Pflugzeit you arrive in Weissbruck

20th day of Pflugzeit you depart Weissbruck

25th day of Pflugzeit you arrive in Altdorf

12th day of Sigmarzeit you depart Altdorf

Four attendants not eight (2 footmen, a valet, and a secretary)

Since the Count didn’t let you know who he was in his travel party, you need to buy or catch food on the way (or put the crew on short rations). Of course that gives you a reason to visit riverside taverns.

Landolf Gersun von Ubersreik | Male Reiklander Noble| Wounds 13/13 | Fortune 6/8 | Fate 5/5 | Resolve/Resilience 2/2 | Armor: Head 1 / Body 3 / Arms 3 / Legs 1 | Corruption: 4

OK. I've added food to Landolf's tagline as well, then. We started with enough food to feed six people for seven days, which I'm calling 42 person/days. Each day we'll be eating 10: four for Count Boorman's attendants and five for the Black Thorns and one for Yvonne.

We got two person/days of food from the Outdoor Survival checks today I think, so we'll only be down 8 after the first day. In theory we could make it as far as Kemperbad like this with a little luck, but the best place to pick up the food we didn't plan for would probably be Fielbach just based on the settlement size on the map. I can't find a normal wiki entry for that place.

Assuming that we can find food without trouble in Fielbach, I'd plan on getting 18 more person/days of food for 180d. That should be enough to get us to Kemperbad plus one extra day with our current list of passengers & crew. Any fish we catch will help us have leftover food after the trip is over or cover us in case of delays.

Assumptions:
* Count Boorman isn't eating our food supply at all (he's getting finer fare paid for above)

I...think that I need to invest more skill points into charm. When starting this character he had Fel 21 and no charm until Tier 4. I had no idea that he’d turn out to be so silver tongued.

Fortune reset after the downtime endeavors but not since then so if anyone used fortune points during negotiations those points are gone for now.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. :)

Also this fight? It's a game of rocket tag. If the enemy hit, then Valghaz would have failed his endurance test and fallen unconscious. Instead it missed, so Valghaz smacked it for 23 damage before it's modifiers. Very different outcomes for the fight!

The fight did come down to Valghaz’s defense roll against the first attack. If Valghaz lost that first fight he’d have had serious problems from the critical hit and would have been knocked unconscious from 1-10 hours by a creature that would have happily tried to drag Valghaz away for a nice snack.

Now is not an ideal moment, but Krizta pays Adelaida back the 5 shillings she loaned her for her guild membership... we can just say she did that back at the ship before they came here if that is okay.

I prefer Kritza hitting a zombie with a flail and then throwing 5 shillings at the back of Adelaida’s head, screaming “Now there is no debt if I die!”

Valghaz had already rolled an attack and since the result was better, we should use it. Valghaz rolled a 67 which is a SL +1 and also has Advantage +1 and +20 for ganging-up for a total of SL +4. The fourth defense roll by the Zombies was a 66 which is a SL -3. So the total SL difference is +7. I think that is 5 (Strength) + 5 (Weapon) + 1 (Mighty Blow) + 7 (SL) - 4 (Zombie Toughness) = 14 wounds inflicted. Hit location is 76 (Body).

Lets use the 67 then. :) But as it is a pick, he can use SL +1 or the 7. So it is SL 7 + 2 for Gangup + 1 advantage + 5 weapon + 5 strength + 1 SMB, - 4 Toughness = 17 wounds

It's one thing for the zombie wounds to close, but I'm really worried about the zombie that Valghaz dispatched standing up again.

Does someone have a lit torch? We could try setting them on fire...

The other idea I can come up with is to just keep hitting them after they are down, which should rapidly cause Critical hits. Maybe with enough of those, we'd be able to get them to stop moving. Ablaze conditions would also help with such a tactic.

Also, it might be just stating the obvious, but Ruprecht has a ton of Corruption now, unless I'm missing something.

I think he's up to 7 points of Corruption. His Willpower + Toughness Bonuses is 7. The rule is that when you gain more Corruption than your Willpower + Toughness then you have to pass a Challenging Endurance Skill Test. Success means nothing happens until you gain more Corruption. Failure means MUTATION.

Should Landolf have gotten an Outnumbered (+20) bonus on Zombie 2 on that last attack he made? If we're counting the number of engaged people:
1. Landolf - because he is attacking Zombie 2
2. Ruprecht - because Zombie 2 is attacking him

If we're counting how many people are actually attacking the target, we'd get:
1. Landolf - because he is attacking Zombie 2 - Zombie 2 isn't Outnumbered

We could also consider Engaged targets, but leaving out combatants that are themselves Engaged by multiple people (I think the Mordheim game on Steam uses a variation of this). In that case, Landolf & Ruprecht couldn't Outnumber Zombie 2, but it would also suggest that Zombie 2 & Zombie 4 couldn't Outnumber Ruprecht.

The Outnumbering section on page 162 seems to suggest that number of characters 'Engaged with each other' is the normal standard, (a standard I don't think is terribly clear) with a hefty dose of GM discretion.

----

Cleaning my thoughts above up a bit:

If we use some variation of the Engaged standard, I think Zombie 2 and Ruprecht are in the same situation as each other. Both are Engaged with two enemies and one of those two enemies is Engaged by an ally. It's only if attacker counting is the method we're using that I think Ruprecht can be Outnumbered while Zombie 2 isn't.

Alternately, it could be something I'm not thinking of.

----

I was going to finish up there, but my brain has been churning a bit more on this.

And so I got Wordy again:
I'm not liking my third suggested 'Engaged with complications' idea above simply because this game is already horribly complicated when combat goes down and I don't want to push it that way even further.

If we say that the Engaged standard is what we should use due to the text on page 162 and don't want to go a more complicated path, the only thing I've suggested above that still makes sense is the first Engaged option. That would suggest that both Zombie 2 and Ruprecht should be Outnumbered, regardless of the state of the rest of the battlefield. That makes some sense when we're looking at the current situation, but I don't think it holds together very well if we look at larger piles of Engaged opponents.

Say for example that the Zombies stay on their feet for a while longer. For some reason, our entire team Engages Zombie 2 while Zombie 4 is only Engaged with Ruprecht. We could make a #1 style ruling, with Zombie 2 Outnumbered very badly while Ruprecht is still Outnumbered 2v1. That doesn't quite feel right though.

If we get even more silly, we could imagine a situation where our entire party surrounds a Goblin Warboss. They somehow survive and the party is surrounded by a horde of goblins. For sanity's sake, three normal goblins are Engaged with each member of the party as well as the Warboss. It makes a lot of sense to say that the party members are all outnumbered, but it doesn't make very much sense to say that the Warboss is still outnumbered despite all the goblins trying to come to his aid.

I think I'm coming around to a mushy sort of holistic standard. In the All vs Zombies situation described above, we'd have a total of five party members vs two zombies. Zombie 2 might be outnumbered 2v1 (5-2 isn't enough to get 3v1 unless you half-adjust) but Ruprecht isn't really outnumbered in that situation. Even if Zombie 2 and Zombie 4 both attack him, the numbers advantage is on his side. Zombie 4 also isn't Outnumbered since only one opponent is engaged with it, though I don't have a really solid reason why not besides it feels right. I could also see ignoring Ruprecht entirely in that situation and saying that Zombie 2 is just outnumbered so badly that it is Outnumbered 4v1 while Ruprecht isn't Outnumbered at all. That approach would be less math-y but it doesn't sound crazy.

In the Goblin Warboss situation, we'd have 16 total goblin combatants vs five party members, for a total of 3v1 Outnumbered on the party, while the Warboss isn't Outnumbered at all. (16/3 is really close to 3)

If I apply my mushy, holistic standard to the current combat, I don't think either side is Outnumbered. The Engaged status of each combatant is exactly mirrored on each side, with Landolf & Zombie 4 being similarly Engaged and Ruprecht & Zombie 2 being similarly Engaged.
