"Why would we want to destroy knowledge? Or horde it? They are aggressive in their hunger for our stories, but are they truly a threat?"
"Ooh, ooooh," Elen considers "it is a shame, but I can't have rogue books boring into my brain without my consent -- and clearly yours is not in the mood for sharing. Anselm steps over to the gishvit drinking Kamari’s thoughts and attempts to grapple it, but fails to connect with the creature writhing in a kind of ecstasy. Muri slips his knife into the creature’s maw and cuts out part of the red ribbon, disabling it. Mama D DMPC launches another cold blast at orange though she doesn't quite connect. Kamari tries to wrench herself free, but is held fast by the tome. Major Kort, having to try for orange, green being already down, misses due to cover, though the bolt sinks solidly into the table nearby. Elen, through cover (-4 not -2 generally, and in this case) lands a blow on Kamari’s gishvit, though she doesn’t drop it.

Muri shudders as the grapple ends, and the gishvit collapses on the ground. He tucks his Shears away, before picking up his Crook. Looking down on the floor, he considers torching the gishvit, but his reflex is discouraged by the torch currently laying on the floor, not in his hand.
He looks over at Kamari still embraced. "I still feel fine. It didn't have as long to grab me as Kamari, though." The halfling looks uncertainly at the swordswoman, and wonders what the long term effects will be.

Muri steps over the dead gishvits, and moves quickly across the room to the southern door, whence comes another light source. Arriving at the door, he opens it, expecting more animated literature to assault him.
Underfoot spends several seconds smelling the dead books, before joining the halfling across the room.

Anselm Basri |

Anselm takes a few moments to stabilize the gishvits. "Truly, they seem benign except for the secrets they bleed. But if we can make them our friends, they may be useful to us down the line. Once we're finished here, of course."
Anselm does what he can to make the creatures comfortable, in as far as he can guess.

Major K'Aldrian Kort 1ATD, Ret. |

Kort nods at Anselm, neither in approval nor disapproval. Just in knowing a man must do what he must, according to his nature.
He pauses to again cast Detect Magic and then Read Magic. He will examine the scroll in his hands and also look about the library for any obvious magics, including where the gishvits might be nesting.

Mallë-o i Otos Elen |

"Am I going to be okay? What happened? What do I do?"
"Yes, likely -- what do its pages say? What did it pull from you?" Elen turns away to give Kamari privacy and examines the other unconscience gishvits as Major Kort begins his own inspection.
Is there any clues in this things as to who might still be down here?
Elen shrugs as Anselm speaks about befriending gishvits.

"Yes, likely -- what do its pages say? What did it pull from you?"
Kamari snatches up the creature and tears into it until she finds the pages. She looks at them briefly before borrowing Muri's torch and burning them.
"Next room?" She asks the others as she stand with Muri at the next door.

GMEuan |

Muri crosses through the inner library to the far door, and opens it quickly. Cold metal lockers line the open spaces of this smallish room. Desiccated papers protrude from the few open units, while the rest of the lockers remain tightly shut. Thick metal bolts connect additional lockers to the walls here. Some of the lockers reach up to the ceiling some twenty feet above your heads.
A sphere of bronze and copper set with a single eye, a winged creature with two clawed hands, hovers gracefully in the middle of the room. It stares at Muri impassively for a moment as if giving him time to take in the room. It then speaks, ”I am Factor 12, the curator of these archives. Have you come to make a withdrawal, or do you wish to use the reading room?” it gestures casually to the west where you see another door set in the wall.
- - -
Meanwhile, Kamari ensures that the red gishvit at least, will not be getting up again. Elen begins examining one of the books. Opening its pages, she quickly finds it has no real organization, so it’s impossible to say what information was last added for example. The text is all jumbled together, and will take some time to unravel.
Anselm stabilizes one more (I’ll say green, and orange stabilizes on its own at the same time), but is interrupted as Major Kort opens the scroll case to examine the contents. As he does, he finds two scrolls. One is magical, but the other flits into the air with serpentine grace, baring its razor-sharp edges as it attacks him!

Mama D guards the doors while she directs a ray of frost into the scroll - alas Major Kort is in the way and she merely chills a bit of the table.
”Sir, your torch! Not in the library please.” The strange spherical creature in the south flies down and picks up Muri’s torch before it sets the library aflame. It does not however get involved in the fight.

Muri watches in growing horror as the Major goes face-to-face with the scroll, quite literally. He looks at his Crook, and judges it to be a poor choice in this fight, now that the fight has taken a new face.
Well, that's what we get if we disturb things down here. Something comes out of a wall, and strikes one man down. Now, we lose another to an ancient magic set on protecting things down here...
"Sir, your torch! Not in the library please.”
Muri nods, not wanting to anger the southern guardian. "I'm sorry about that. We're trying not to disturb things down here, but curiosity is a powerful thing."
The halfling takes his torch back from the flying orb. "I'll be more careful with this. Before I forget, you mentioned that we could withdraw. I'd like to know more, please."

"Guardian, we are here on a mission for the crown. Our goal is to find our way out of this place, but also to investigate some strange markings we've found in other rooms. Might you be able to help us?"
The flying ball hovers in the doorway, watching the battle, ”That scroll has lay here, or is it lied here? Anyway, it’s been here a very long time. I’d nearly forgotten about it. I shouldn’t have opened it if I were you… Looks painful.”
The halfling takes his torch back from the flying orb. "I'll be more careful with this. Before I forget, you mentioned that we could withdraw. I'd like to know more, please."
It hands back the torch and shrugs with it’s arms as the wings continue to flutter effortlessly as it hovers. ”Sure! You may, though you’re a large group, take something from the cupboards here.” he flies up to a smaller one and opens it, ”We have a variety of things… are you sure your friend is OK over there?” he looks back before taking out a gold key much like the one you’ve already found, but not quite identical.
”You may have two items. Your man there pocketed a book, and you may have one other item. Well, I’ll let you keep whatever is in that scroll tube as well, since you’re dealing with the guardian.” he holds up the key, ”This is what most folks would be interested in though, seems to me. He flies down to Muri, ”But I have other items as well, some even magical. Maybe you don’t want the key.”

Muri steps over the bolt in the floor, heading back out.
He looks over his shoulder. "If I were you, I wouldn't fight with any more guardians. There are more doors..."
If nothing jumps him, he moves through the familiar rooms, looking for new ways forward. He takes down the whole long, ancient hallway, expecting that they'll find a similar wing, but needing to clear it, in case there's a set of stairs hiding somewhere. Kamari watches Muri pass by with his golden key while the Major cleans blood off his face. She follows Elen to behold guardian.
”I’m a bit confused. Is this entire place under protection or just these couple rooms with bookshelves? What can you tell us about this place? Can you tell us how to get out? We’re in a rush to return to Oppara. Are we under the city?”

Muri leaves the party behind for the moment to head down the long hall to see what lies beyond. As he passes the large metal door to the north, covered with more chalk circles and, this time, some mathematical symbols, the markings flare and sizzle briefly filling the immediate area with chalk dust - a trap! It's a quiet trap, so the rest of the party is, so far, unaware...
Muri and Underfoot, please make Will DC 14 saves.
Feel free to spoiler your actions as the party doesn’t know what’s going on in the hallway quite yet.

Anselm watches Muri leave and asks, "I see there is another door beyond, kind Factor 12. Might we be permitted to enter?"
”Why of course!” answers Factor 12 happily. It flies over and opens the door to reveal a circular wooden table and several chairs which are arranged in the center of this room. The rest of the room is bare of distractions and utterly eerily silent. In fact a silence falls into the chamber you’re in while the door is open, and nothing can be heard. Factor 12 closes the door before continuing, ”You understand now why I keep the door closed, no?” It smiles.
Major Kort settles in a bit as the others move about and starts to read the scrolls within the once dangerous tube. They are pretty decent spells overall - you have four scrolls: dispel magic, invisibility, mirror image, and mount.
"Guardians? How many are down here?" Elen asks Factor 12. "Where, if I might ask, are Factors Zero through Eleven?"
”Oh, I only know of the one guardian scroll, and you’ve finished that one.” the strange floating creature grins, ”I don’t know who my predecessors were, or where they are.” It thinks a moment, ”There might be a record of them in one of the old books down here. Might take me some time to find it though.” It could take it an hour to find the treatise on the prior Factors, if it can find it at all - but it seems willing to research it for you if you like.
”I’m a bit confused. Is this entire place under protection or just these couple rooms with bookshelves? What can you tell us about this place? Can you tell us how to get out? We’re in a rush to return to Oppara. Are we under the city?”
”Oh, I just watch over the stacks. There are other chambers down here, but I was never shown them. Simply summoned to act as curator for these few items, and these two libraries. I know, or rather was told, that I’m under the Senate in Oppara, Taldor, Golarian. So yes, if I was not lied to, you are under the city. I’d look for stairs.”

Major K'Aldrian Kort 1ATD, Ret. |

They are pretty decent spells overall - you have four scrolls: dispel magic, invisibility, mirror image, and mount.
”M’Della, would these be of interest to you? Elen?” K’Aldrian offers the scrolls to Elen and Mama D should either wish them, or he tuck them away for later.
He straights up his armor and brushes himself off, trying to get the muss of the fight off his person. He’ll then go look into the Factor 12 room, just to see what is there, but then will follow the party back, tracking Muri, but a distance behind as he clatters to catch up.

Muri Daybreaker |

Will Save v DC 14, Muri: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Will Save v DC 14, Underfoot: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Confusion Effect Round 1, Muri: 1d100 ⇒ 94
Confusion Effect Round 1, Underfoot: 1d100 ⇒ 84
His memory will always plague him with doubt, as his mind fights to understand if he was attacked by his faithful dog because he struck her first, for no reason, or if he felt her teeth try for his shoulder before he lashed out without thought. Either way, the next several moments are backlit by a torch dropped to the floor...
Shepherd's Crook: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 damage
Bite Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 damage
edit:
Confirm Critical?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 for 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 3, 6) + 9 = 19 damage
The hallway erupts in the sheepdog's howl of pain, as the halfling's blade just barely avoids a telling blow on her shoulder.
Confusion Effect Round 2, Muri: 1d100 ⇒ 11
Confusion Effect Round 2, Underfoot: 1d100 ⇒ 83
Muri can't believe what he sees, when the red fades from his sight. She's bloody!! Who did tha... That was me!! Take my eyes, that was me!!
"Underfoot!! I'm soooo sorry, girl!! I don't know what came over me..! Came over us... Underfoot?"
Bite Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 damage
The sheepdog's teeth find their mark this time, and Muri bites his own lip in pain, only understanding that he deserves this pain. He has no right to be offended. He's the offender here.
Confusion Effect Round 3, Muri: 1d100 ⇒ 77
Confusion Effect Round 3, Underfoot: 1d100 ⇒ 35
Underfoot begins to froth at the mouth, a mixture of saliva and halfling blood. "Rabid!! She's gone rabid!!"
Shepherd's Crook: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 damage
For a second time, Underfoot is injured needlessly, and her throaty, incoherent growl bursts into a second howl of pain...

Major Kort and Kamari come around the corner (and perhaps others as well) as Muri slams his poor pooch once more on the noggin, screaming, "Rabid!! She's gone rabid!!"

Mama D |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |

”Oh my goodness, oh my..” Mama huffs a bit as she catches up. ”Don’t worry, My Good Major, I shall see you free. I have just the thing here if I can only remember it..how did that go aga...” She sputters to a halt as she sees first the Major has been freed, and secondly, and rather courageously, he saves dear Elen from its final death throws.
”Ah. So it’s been sorted, then. I’ll just save this for later, shall I?” Her eyes brighten at the sight of the inanimate scrolls, ”Oh yes, if no else should desperately want them, I would gladly take them. Should we get out of here, or even possibly even if we don’t, I could scribe them into my book, then make another for someone else. That sounds like just the thing, doesn’t it? “ she laughs a little with relief and a bit of optimism, though both are short lived as Muri and Underfoot return, and not at all happy about their excursion..
” ... It swirled, but it reformed. I don't want to move. I might hurt her again..."
”Ah, don’t move then, easy now. Let’s all catch our breath for a moment iand all the healing and such ... and then perhaps someone else, can go chase the circles. Perhaps Factor !2 might know something about them?”

Kamari |

While Underfoot cowers by Muri's side, tail tucked between her legs, the halfling simply points at the chalk circles on the northern door.
"There's something... there. It swirled, but it reformed. I don't want to move. I might hurt her again..."
Kamari approaches slowly, stopping about ten feet away and examines the chalk designs and surrounding area.
perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Not expecting much out of this, but it's what she would do.
