Nina will decline the elixir of life unless we're concerned about disease/poison. She has two minor healing potions.
Minor Healing Potion: 1d8 ⇒ 5
"Thank you, my friends. I thought I was a goner!"

Chulyin reels in the rope and the sorceress once she grabs it. "Hold on!" he calls.

No, at some point you're supposed to crit fail and fall into the river. Nina, as usual, is a trailblazer.

![]() |

Nina will drink both the minor healing potion and the elixir of life, then.
She'll offer the good doctor a swig of pickle brine in return.
Fortitude DC 14: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Nina doesn't throw up.

![]() |

With the feeling returning to her fingers, Nina feels pretty comfortable throwing a snowball at Savna.

And pretending it was Lilic.

Busted.

Lilic looks at his hands for a second-- did I do this?

GM Slothsy |

Remember, someone saw an ice pick stuck in a floe upriver!
Chulyin hasn't passed yet, but hasn't crit-failed either...

Athletics, Penalty: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 - 2 = 22
Chulyin finally--after a good many attempts--manages to swing over the river despite the cascading ice chunks. Once settled on the other side, he informs the others, "I saw an ice pick in the ice, upstream. I suspect someone broke up the ice to make this crossing more challenging."

GM Slothsy |

It is definitely safe enough to go investigate, if you want.

Society: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
"This is the Oakfeller crest, and there are two Oakfellers on Without a Trace."
Nina kind of wants to return it to them pick end first, but she doesn't have the strength to do so.
"Let's flag down an official."
Nina brings the second piece of evidence to the authorities.

![]() |

"Those are some fellahs..."
Lilic will go with Nina-- if we are on the same side of the river to do so.

Raine nearly has a heart attack as he witnesses Nina fall in. He shivers just from the look of her soaked clothes.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 (More if that ice pick makes noise, bahahaha
"Okay, well... Here goes nothing. Really..."
Athletics: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Raine slips on a particularly slick section of ice and crashes into the water, as expected.
(If the rope is still around, Raine will grab the rope and attempt to climb up, hoping to Nethys someone has a prestidigitation available....)

GM Slothsy |

As Raine crashes into the river, the shock of the cold runs through his body.
2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 cold and 1d4 ⇒ 1 slashing damage! Basic Fortitude save. Athletics check to swim as the current is strong here!
No rope currently in the water.

Nina will throw a rope in the river.
Edit: Nina will throw half of a rope in the river. She'll hold on to the other half.

Raine braces for the bite of the cold water.
Fortitude: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
...But he doesn't anticipate how truly bone-chilling the icey depths are. Don't Ulfens do this for fun?! How???
Reflex: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 9 - 1 = 20
Raine, through the fatigue, manages to nimbly grab the rope and hold on for dear life.

GM Slothsy |

The official on this side of the river, a very hairy Ulfen man, looks in shock as Raine is pulled from the river. As the pickaxe is shown to him, he furrows his brow.
"This is very serious! I'll inform the higher-ups immediately. As it is, I think it would be best if you all stayed the night to recover, just to be safe."

![]() |

Lilic was about to dive in-- but is happy he did not have to.
"I will take guard duty tonight, while we rest."

![]() |

Nina sleeps like a baby.

GM Slothsy |

Y'all get the benefits of a long rest! If anyone wanted to do treat wounds checks on your injured party members, now is the time.
The night passes by.. mostly uneventfully?
The snow continues to the fall the next day, blanketing the area. It's the final day of the race. One more challenge midway, and it'll be the finish line!

Lilic will take guard duty.
But, before, he will heal up whoever needs healing.

Lilic, the nature check was recall knowledge. No additional information.
Savan Overland: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Raine: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
The day's travels are smoother than yesterday's, but still difficult with the snow piling up. Chulyin is able to mostly follow the bear's tracks as it also continues down the race's path, but they sometimes get covered as they snowfall outpaces the group's progress.
A small, frigid stream runs between the dense pines, opening onto a frozen pond. To the east, a few small columns of smoke rise above the trees from several small campfires. To the north, a dozen caribou walk along the surface of the ice, snuffling and pawing at the thin grasses poking up from the snowy shoreline. As a race official watches over the small herd, the wind carries the gentle sound of bells.
"Hail," the official says, "and hearten! This is the final task. When Balgrid lost his favored steed in a blizzard, he tracked a herd of caribou across the tundra, and watched their behavior from a distance. He watched day and night for over a week as he sought a beast that he could tame. He nearly escaped death as hundreds of caribou stampeded before he managed to sling his saddle bags over the animal’s back and lead his new companion out of the herd and into the taiga."
"You are to recreate this. Four caribou in the pack have bells tied to their antlers. You must choose an appropriate beast and obtain its bell."
Mechanically, you'll need a perception check to determine which ones have bells on it, then a Stealth or Nature check to approach the creature. Open the spoilers below for DCs after you roll.
[spoiler=Nature or Stealth DCs]DC is 17 for stealth or 16 for Nature. If you critically fail.... something happens and I'll tell you what.

GM Slothsy |

Oh... no...
As Nina tries to grab at one of the reindeer, it startles and runs into another reindeer. That reindeer startles as well, then the next, triggering a stampede!
Nina's caught among the herd and I need a DC 19 reflex save as she gets caught underfoot and takes 2d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. Reflex negates.
A group of officials rush over, yelling and clearing the field of all participants for everyone's safety.
Due to the stampede, no one else can attempt checks.

Lilic-- does nothing.
"You all right, there, Nina?!"

Lilic glances at Muk-Muk-- "What was that?!"

She's got a way about her
I don't know what it is
But I know I can't roll if she's crit failing
She's got a way with pole vaulting
I don't know what it is
But I know she shouldn't go sailing
She's got a spell that heals me
I don't know how it is
That she's the only one who ever needs it
She's got a way of talking
I don't know what it is
But we don't need it when we're walking through the snow
She goes to caribou unstealthy
Spooks them with many sounds
She leads the way and we all get turned around

GM Slothsy |

I'll allow it in this case! Unfortunately, you can only do one re-roll. Even if we went with the best, a 7 is still a crit fail. Massively bad luck.

![]() |

Sweet Iomedae. In my other campaign I took 4 critical hits in a row and now this. Sorry guys, I think the RNG really, really, really hates me right now.

![]() |

Chulyin's face falls with disappointment and then worry as the caribou begin to stampede around the sorceress. The creases on his forehead ease as the woman manages to spring free of the danger.
"Well, that is a shame," he says before setting up for a rest.

![]() |

"I'm sure Balgrid got stomped just the same.
He invented stuff afterwords to make himself look nice!
Don't fret Nina, he's no better than you.
He even did worse, he let his favorite horse die to snow! Some hero..."

The official usher the team away from the checkpoint and to the final leg of the race, just before Bluetongue's Brawlers take off. The trail here is easier than before, the easy final leg.
About an hour away from the checkpoint, a broken sled lies in the snow at the edge of the path beside an old bridge. Fresh blood marks are clearly visible against the white snow as large, crimson swaths. Equipment is scattered across the snow and onto the frozen surface of the lake.
