Rocko, hearing Kaliban's advice, takes it to heart. "Walfredo!" he calls across the field. "Defend Janira!" The words don't matter as much as the motions he makes with his hands and arms, but the message doesn't get through. Rocko's hurrying across the field confuses the owlbear, who just continues along towards his former task.
Free: Handle Animal (defend) DC 10, link: 1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 4 = 6
Double move: 30'

Walfredo |

Walfredo, not understanding what Rocko wants, continues along towards the minotaur with only attack on his mind.
Move: 25'
Standard: attack minotaur

The minotaur has reach so it will get an AoO on Walfredo.
Broken Greataxe: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 4 = 7
Walfredo can't understand the wisdom of Kaliban's words, but he certainly understands getting thwacked with a greataxe.
Tok and Walfredo chip away at the minotaur.
The minotaur is very angry at everyone, but especially the halfling with a whip. It winds up, brings its axe above its head, brings it down on Janira.
Broken Greataxe, PA: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 2) + 6 = 13
Confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Janira looks at her last trainees one last time and falls to the ground.

"Walfredo!" Rocko cries out as the minotaur bloodies the owlbear's shoulder, but his next cry of "Janira!!!" rings out even louder as he watches the halfling fall.
He continues as fast as he can towards the log, finally moving across the river.
Double move: 30'
Acrobatics DC 7: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

Walfredo keeps his focus on his target, stepping up to the minotaur and digging in with tooth and claw.

"Leave her alone!" Mizzie lobs her throwing spear, then pulls out her vial of clear liquid.
Standard action to attack, move action to prepare a dose of arcanotoxin. Also 5' step off the log.

Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

GM Watery Soup |

One of Walfredo's claws connects, as does Mizzie's javelin. The minotaur looks like a pincushion, but a pincushion wielding a still very dangerous greataxe.
Round 1-2, the Pathfinders may act.

Rectitude moves across the last of the log, and focuses on the minotaur as they closes the distance. They raise their hand and send out a spray of color and light.
Color Spray, should avoid Walfredo. DC 14 will. Also, I've been trying to play Rectitude as an asexual plant entity. I've been misgendering them in some of my posts. Trying to do better. Sorry if this has caused anyone discomfort. Not my intention.
2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)
3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.
5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.

Kaliban reload and targets the Minotaur once more, this time experiencing more difficulty due to all his team being so close to the creature.
atk minotaur, lt xbow -4 into melee: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 4 = 20
dmg minotaur, lt xbow: 1d8 ⇒ 7 x2 = 14 dmg, with confirmed crit
crit minotaur, lt xbow -4 into melee: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 - 4 = 17
Arcane rule... Shooting into Melee, you get -4. Unless the combatants are 10 feet apart (which they were not)... But, unless the enemy is two size categories larger that the ally (which he is vs. Janira)... in which case the penalty is -2. So, annoyingly and technically, we should all have been getting -2 on our attacks unless we have the Precise Shot feat!? Crazy talk!

GM Watery Soup |

This is my bad. All my ranged characters took Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot as first level feats, so I've never had to worry about firing into melee. There are two hits that should have been misses, and one crit that shouldn't have confirmed. I'm going to take 9 HP off the damage and move on.
Kaliban's arrow strikes the minotaur in the head, but the minotaur is very thick skulled.
Minotaur Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

GM Watery Soup |

Though not overly intelligent, the minotaur knows when it's got the short end of the stick. It turns tail and runs.
Anyone with a ranged weapon in hand can make an attack at 80' range, and then it's gone.

"That's it, run! And don't come back!" Mizzie sheaths her dagger and rushes to Janira's side. "Oh no. Can anyone, you know, heal her? I'm so sorry, Janira, I don't have the right ingredients!"

![]() |

Rocko hurries over to Janira--hurry being a relative term as the stocky oread's short legs and heavy armor keep him from moving fast at all. He hollers "Check the bag! She prolly had something in the bag!" Rocko fumbles at his belt as he runs to retrieve a wand, which--if nobody beat him or found a healing potion in the backpack--he activates when he gets to the halfling's side.
First round
Double move: 30'
Second round
5' step
Standard: readied action to activate wand of cure light wounds if Janira hasn't received healing by the time he gets there
cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

GM Watery Soup |

You tap Janira with the wand, but nothing seems to happen. Sometimes these things don't give much healing, you think. A few more taps, and a few more taps later, it's clear that it's not a problem with the wand.
You carefully wrap Janira's body and bring it back to Absalom without further incident. Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine inquires excitedly about what you found and asks to see your notes before he notes Janira's absence.
When the healers have claimed Janira's body, he somberly compliments those who recorded notes for being certain to write down ideas and observations while the thoughts are fresh, observing that it’s difficult
enough to remember what one had for breakfast the day before as it is to recall exactly what one was thinking while studying an inscription. As you are now the foremost authorities on that cave and what it contains, Shaine also invites them to come up with its name.

Rectitude solemnly accompanies Janira's corpse and delivers her remains to Master Shaine. Over time Recititude describes the encounter with the gillman, Uori, and the historical, religious significance not only to the gillpeople but to the followers of Aroden. They share the sketches from the halls of the caves.

GM Watery Soup |

"Aroden's Cradle. A fitting name."
Three days later, you are confirmed as full Pathfinder field agents. As part of the ceremony, your lodge leaders also gifts a personalized wayfinder to each of you, reminding you that this is not only the symbol of the Pathfinder’s trade but also a reminder of the three principle duties: explore, report, and cooperate.
