Me, seeing all the hubbub on the board about this scenario: Wonder what makes this such a fun scenario? People seem to really enjoy it.
Valsin: So you'll be escorting goblins, and--
Me: There it is!
Absolutely did not know that was going to happen-- and if I'm not mistaken, this will be Vulpina's first direct contact with them.
:D We're in for a good time.

it came up in recruitment but just want to talk about battle tactics real quick. i will offer a raging song, of course. otherwise pretty plain sword and board. anyone else joining me up front?

![]() |

Is anyone able to use a Wand of CLW? I possess one but do not have UMD.
I also have a Wand of Endure Elements for use.
Also, I will be altering my spell list to change Protection from Evil into another Shield spell.

Vulpina's a front-liner with a Dragon Pistol and Wakizashi combo.
It's mostly subpar damage, high AC (due to Dodging Panache and Gunslinger's Dodge), with the occasional spike due to crits.
She's got a lot of self-titled Grace (Grit+Panache), with 8 uses and plenty of opportunities to refill it.
Not sure if she'll take Raging Song; gonna have to think about whether or not her deeds apply, and whether or not I need to use Acrobatics to maneuver on a given turn. I suppose it'll vary turn-by-turn!

![]() |

Loam has played an adventure with goblins being used by the Shadow Lodge, so she may be more irritable than usual. Should be interesting!
She mostly attacks from range, getting closer for certain spells if necessary. She'll likely prepare a variety of utility spells, and, if needed for offense, will consume them to empower her pistol. She has a variety of skills and a mediocre UMD.

![]() |

Vulpina has a +8 to UMD, so almost a 50/50 shot of using a wand successfully (and carries her own CLW). It's not great... but out of combat, she can help patch people up a little faster.

![]() |

So I just, uh, noticed something...
The beneficial bandolier I've been using to make Vulpina work... isn't legal. I could have sworn I checked that four times before buying it.
Not entirely sure what to do with that now! Thankfully I have three pistols and can thus fire three times without having to reload (making the sword-and-pistol game actually semi-usable), but uh.
I guess I have some equipment re-configuring to do? And possibly some alternate purchasing decisions.

![]() |

All right, cleared it with the GM. I'm exchanging my Beneficial Bandolier that officially never existed, plus my Masterwork Cane Sword (never got any use out of that thing), and two Alchemist's Fires (Dragon's Breath is even better!) for an Endless Bandolier.
Vulpina now has... 5gp remaining. Don't ask her to spot your tab :P
Hooray for being able to carry all this stuff with low Strength!

![]() |

I know a few of my PCs will get one of those, but the Endless Bandolier is similar-- but while keeping everything within draw distance. Vulpina's still got room for a few more weapons, even! Maybe get me a musket some day for those far-off shots...

How are we looking to handle this encounter, lethal-vs-nonlethal-wise?
On the one hand, the folks in the towers could be allies or neutral parties who don't know who we are and are being cautious by firing a warning shot. If nothing else, they're likely sentient (not a lot of nonsentients firing bows and arrows from tower windows).
On the other hand, feels like they should shout something down if they're not trying to kill us. "Go away!" perhaps. "Identify yourselves!" even.

Well, that answers that!

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Regarding the lack of combat so far, I'd like to remind you not to underestimate yourselves. Through your good role-playing and good decision making, you've circumvented obstacles and avoided combat.
Felix's rapport with the goblins encouraged them to help you find shelter... Who knows what might have happened if you didn't in time!
Vulpina's plan is just about to circumvent Rimetusk and his greataxe.
Stay tuned for more! We're about to hit the halfway point!

![]() |

We're only halfway? Excellent! I've been enjoying this immensely (so I'll have to offer it locally when I start GMing at the local nerdery).
The longer Vulpina goes without combat, the less likely she is to die before her build starts to shine :D

![]() |

Vulpina could, of course, take the troll in one-on-one combat, but she'd hate to make you all look bad, and then she'd have to find a way to get the ferry to work, and it's all just so much bother, you know?

Bruno Romero |

I'm glad you're enjoying the scenario so far! I've run this scenario around 5 times before, and lemme say, you're probably the most level-headed group I've seen.
I've had characters attack Rimetusk on sight, starve the goblins, and even go on a different path than what Sverrir laid out. Thank you for your interest thus far!

Salvadore has Mending spell in his book.
Mending: (School: transmutation)
Casting Time: 10 minutes Components: V, S Range: 10 ft.
Target: one object up to 1 lb./level Duration: instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless, object); Spell Resistance: yes (harmless, object)
Description: This spell repairs damaged objects, restoring 1d4 hit points to the object. If the object has the broken condition, this condition is removed if the object is restored to at least half its original hit points. All of the pieces of an object must be present for this spell to function. Magic items can be repaired by this spell, but you must have a caster level equal to or higher than that of the object. Magic items that are destroyed (at 0 hit points or less) can be repaired with this spell, but this spell does not restore their magic abilities. This spell does not affect creatures (including constructs). This spell has no effect on objects that have been warped or otherwise transmuted, but it can still repair damage done to such items.

I go three levels without a misfire and now I can't get a shot off!
Coat pistol, don't fail me now! Once I fish you out of where you're hiding...

![]() |

...you see a column of black smoke, and at its base, the very same Longhouse described by Sverrir's instructions.
I read this as the longhouse being on fire. For the sake of Pai's frozen toes, I hope Vulpina interpreted this correctly. ;)

![]() |

My assumption is based entirely on the guy in front not seeming too concerned about it, waving hello and whatnot! :P
Either way, a fire's a fire, and it's bound to be warmer near it! :D Pai's feet are saved!

![]() |

Happy New Year!
I think this is the most patient Vulpina has ever been. She's generally the sort to shoot first (even in the remastered edition)!
Maybe the spirit of the season has gotten into her.
(I think it's mostly just that there's someone on their side who's not willing to fight.)

![]() |

Starting to think it's inevitable.
Going to use #5-08 to ask if killing these yahoos will result in a loss of the secondary condition.

![]() |

Eh, there's always "take them out non-lethally," but that's risky. Especially if we're trying to rely on a mix of Lethal and Non-Lethal.
There's no way for me to shoot them "non-lethally," for example... and a crit would be very lethal.
But maybe removing their weapons from the equation will help :P

Bruno Romero |

Going to use #5-08 to ask if killing these yahoos will result in a loss of the secondary condition.
Killing or sparing the Blackravens (all of them and each one separately) is negligible - that is, it does not contribute nor oppose the success conditions of this scenario. Still, I applaud your efforts for trying to resolve the matter peacefully.
If I could give you extra loot I would!

Hi! I figure that things will likely pick up this week, as most people are getting back to work/school/non-holiday life.
