The beetle Hemdar summons misses the thug it attacks and the flash of light that it gives off gets blocked by passing members of the crowd. Sorry :(

Lucius draws his warhammer and uses it to shove the thug in his crowd. With a display of uncanny strength, he shoves the thug ten feet back and nearly out of the crowd entirely. Critical shove

Tilorean's attack lands and he hits the thug square in the back of his ribs. With a pained yelp the thug turns around and focuses on Tilorean.

Experience 890/1000 | Level 2 | #097: In Hell's Bright Shadow | Part 2: Rebuilding the Ravens | Day 4 (Sunday, 6 Rova 4715)

The thug being attacked by Hemdar's beetle is going to focus on said beetle, swinging at it with his mace three times in a frenzy. The thug hits the first swing, misses the second terribly, and lands the third with a horrid crunch. Hemdar's beetle vanishes shortly after the third attack hits.

CCG 2 Rolls:

Attack 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 B
Attack 2: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1
Attack 3: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (17) - 4 = 13
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 B

The thug that Tilorean hit is going to turn around and start swinging at him with their mace. He appears to be aiming for places that will certainly hurt, but none that would potentially kill. Though he swings at Tilorean three times he does not hit, instead flailing around in an increasing frustrated fashion.

CCG 3 Rolls:

Attack 1: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 - 2 = 11
Attack 2: 1d20 + 0 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 0 - 2 = -1
Attack 3: 1d20 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (15) - 4 - 2 = 9

After getting tossed ten feet by Lucius's hammer, the thug that was hit moves with great difficulty through the crowd. Seemingly having a special disdain for Lucius and his rabble-rousing, the thug aims straight for Lucius's vitals. The thug narrowly misses Lucius's head and swiftly realizes that Lucius may be too much for him alone. He shouts out to his companions to give him some help.

CCG 4 Rolls:

Attack 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

One of the thugs in the crowd of economic conservatives notices his companion's call for help and moves up to get into a flanking position. He takes a swing at Lucius from the back, but his swing finds no purchase.

CCG 5 Rolls:

Attack 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The last thug, seeing an elf with a bow isolated between crowds charges up to him and takes a swing at him. His blow hits Emarel in the shoulder, sending a shock of pain throughout his body. Emarel takes 4 damage.

CCG 6 Rolls:

Attack 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The crowds move away from the chaos, but a knife thrown from the crowd of anarchists escalates the tension. It strikes Nox right in the throat. Instead of falling to the ground or panicking she just snarls and pulls the knife out, the wound healing swiftly after. She retreats into the opera house.

Lucius looked to either side of him and realized he had a fight on his hands. Bringing his hammer to bare, Lucius decided it was time for the gloves to come off and growled "You want to play rough do? Don't say I didn't warn you!"

With a quick swing of his hammer, Lucius brought it down on the Thug with furious righteousness to great effect.

Action #3 - Raise Shield, AC 20

Turning about face, Lucius made a quick incantation which caused his warhammer to glow brightly. Raising his shield, he starred down the other Thug and barked out "You're next!"

A natural 20 is still a critical hit right? Also, I rolled double dice, but if it's double his damage is actually 24. Yikes! Nice first combat roll! Surge is up for the next attack versus #5.

Aw, poor flash beetle. :(
As the thug kills Hemdar's summoned beetle, Hemdar focuses his magic on the thug and blasts them with ice. The ice sticks to the thug's clothes, slowing them down. Seeing another thug strike an elf with their mace, Hemdar mutters a few Sylvan words, granting the elf a sliver of insight.

"On it!" Enara replies to Jilvi, before tearing off in a separate direction. Diving this time into the crowd of Thrune loyalists, she ducks and weaves her way through to her target. Just as Jilvi's whip cracks across the face of the thug, Enara steps up from behind with another blow to the head.

Emarel stumbled backwards from the impact of the mace, shoulder burning with pain. Of course they would have gone after him, he was standing alone in the middle of the crowd. It was a bad day to not prepare any magical shields for himself, how could he have been so careless. He rolled his shoulder around, confirming that it wasn't broken, as he took a look around the crowd. There were others fighting the thugs that had sprung up, one side including the orator from before. He could still hear the man's resolve and it bolstered Emarel's own spirit. With a start, he felt another small force settling around him, as if trying to help. He didn't know what it was, but it prompted him turn to look at the other side of the crowd. He saw a gnome and a human standing together battling some of the thugs, and rather competently at that. Making a split second decision, Emarel ran towards the two, away from his attacker, pulling an arrow out as he went. He stopped just above the two and turned to face the thug. With the arrow in the same hand as his bow, he performed another series of gestures with his off hand, causing it to glow bright blue with energy. He took the arrow and nocked it, spreading the energy around the arrow as he did so. He aimed for a second, allowing the magical forces around him to coalesce into utter focus, before releasing the arrow. As he did, the energy he had brought forth turned into a second, magical arrow that followed directly behind the mundane one, streaking towards its mark. "Great day for a riot, isn't it?"

Emarel will stride, strike with his bow, and follow up with a force bolt. With guidance and inspire courage coupled with volley penalty, the net to hit will still just be +6.

Experience 890/1000 | Level 2 | #097: In Hell's Bright Shadow | Part 2: Rebuilding the Ravens | Day 4 (Sunday, 6 Rova 4715)

Lucius hits the thug near him with immense force, immediately knocking him to the ground unconscious. The thug that was previously flanking him looks resolved to do the same to Lucius.

The thug that had previously smashed the beetle turns up to go after Hemdar next. They are immediately hit with a blast of ice to the chest, a whip to the face, and the pommel of Enara's rapier to the temple. Thug 2 took 47 damage this turn. Suffice it to say he is uh... out

Tilorean indeed gives the thug that attacked him the good ol' "one two" with a blow to the gut to double them over and an two-handed blow to the back of the skull to put them to the ground.

Emarel's two arrows, one mundane and one magical, strike true at the thug that previously attacked him. While the thug is still active, he looks like he is rather wounded.

CCG 5 Rolls:

Disarm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Attack: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1

The thug that was previously flanking Lucius attempts to grab Lucius's warhammer but fails—the armored man is much faster than he looks! He takes a swing with his mace at Lucius and misses terribly. Realizing he is far out of his league he will get into position to attack the nearby noble.

CCG 6 Rolls:

Grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Attack: 1d20 + 0 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 0 - 2 = 9

Emarel's assailant sees that there is no way they'll have any luck with the crowd formed around Hemdar, so they head over to flank Tilorean with their companion. They grab Tilorean's arm with their left hand and swing at him with their mace. They miss Tilorean but maintain their grasp on his arm.

The crowds continue to surge away from the violence, but the conflict appears to be far from over. Three dottari guards enter the fray from inside the opera house ready with maces and shields to silence the dissenters in the crowd. To no one's shock, the three of them turn their gazes on the man who spoke words of rebellion to the protestors.

The well-equipped guards made their way out of the opera house, looking ready to use the heavy maces. This was getting worse and worse. They would make easy work of the citizens in the crowd, and as good a fighter as that rebellious man from before seemed to be, it would be difficult to handle all 3 of these guards at the same time. Lucky for Emarel, they were still bunched together. He didn't really think of how bad an idea it probably was to draw their ire. Even being injured, he could help. He took a careful step towards them; they hadn't yet noticed him. Offhand furiously making arcane gestures, he held it up towards the three guards. As soon as he finished the last word of the spell, there was an explosion of light and color in their direction. At least this would hopefully buy everyone some more time.

Emarel takes a careful 5 foot step north, and then uses remaining 2 actions to cast Color Spray.

Emarel's explosion of light and color appears to seriously debilitate the dottari to the east(3), catch the western(1) one off guard and not affect the northern(2) one at all. At this sign of aggression from the elven man the western one appears to shift their "enforcement" onto Emarel instead of Lucius.

Oh, hells, Enara thinks to herself, watching the elf step up and blast the guards with an outrageous display of color. While it certainly had an effect, it also left him exposed and vulnerable. Nothing for it, then.

Perhaps antagonizing the Thrune guards hadn't been the wisest idea, at least from so close. For that, Emarel was glad that these others around him had stepped up to fight as well. Landing on the ground, Lucius was alarmed that this thug got best of him for even just a moment. Using his shield, he deflects further attacks and growls in frustration "You'll regret that!"

Action #1 - Raise Shield, AC20

Rolling to his feet, Lucius stares down his assailant, who is now dealing with the business end of a rapier from the man Lucius intervened to help. Nodding at his newfound ally, Lucius adds his hammer to the mix.

Emarel doubled over in pain, clutching at his broken rib. Suddenly facing these guards alone was not a place where he wanted to be. Taking the advice of his new friends, he proceeded to follow them east. As he ran, he pulled out an arrow. Once he caught up, he turned around for a second, aimed, and let the arrow loose.

Lucius stands up and executes a coordinated strike against the last remaining thug with Tilorean. Though Lucius misses, Tilorean's rapier deftly pierces into the last thug and finishes them off.

Jilvinirri's whip cracks against the dazzled dottari. Just as the dottari looks like they will try to strike back, Jilvi is on the other side of the plaza and the dottari is hit by Hemdar's ray of frost. Sluggish from the pain of being struck twice in a row, the dottari makes a pathetic dodge of Emarel's arrow and it graze their armor ineffectually.

Enara strikes out at the other dottari's weapon with a flourish of her rapier, loosening their grip on it.

Dottari 1:

Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 - 2 = 11

The dottari struck by Hemdar's ray starts to regain their vision and Strides over to Strike at Hemdar. Their mace misses and they raise their shield.

Dottari 2:

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

The other dottari chases after Enara and attempts to Strike her, missing in their haste.

The crowds continue to surge out of the park, and the doors into the opera house loom open as a portentous reminder that more dottari could come at any time.

Seeing the dottari giving chase, Emarel considered his options. There were still people in the crowd who hadn't left yet, and the guards were out for blood. He could continue to run, but that might leave the stragglers open to getting their heads crushed in, and that wasn't something he wanted to see happen. Holding out his bow in front of him, Emarel ran his other hand slowly over it while muttering the words for the spell. Small sparks flew off to the side, flames wound their way down the limbs of the bow, and a thin layer of frost covered the string, all emphasizing the bright blue light that now emanated from the weapon.

Now, he surveyed the area. One of the guards had almost caught up, but he trusted his new friends, Enara he thought the tall one was, to handle him. Instead, focused on the remaining guard that had been caught in previous spell, who was attacking the human that had been helping but remained closer. Emarel pulled an arrow out and set it to the string, magical energy flowing onto the arrow as well, alighting it in the same manner as the bow. Trying to ignore the pain in his shoulder and ribs, he aimed, and let go. After he did, he called out to his companions. "I hate to stay much longer, but I think we should at least hold off until this crowd finishes dispersing. We at least can handle ourselves, but I wouldn't want them caught in the violence right now any more than necessary."

Emarel will cast magic weapon on his bow, and then strike at dottari #1

Attack roll: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 9
Weapon damage: 2d8 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + 1 = 10

Man, I guess getting hit real good by some maces really makes it hard to aim an arrow properly. Ah well.

Ducking away from the blow, Enara turns back to the dottari, saying, "You don't know when to quit, do you?" Tumbling past him into a flank with Jilvi, her rapier snaps out, quickly followed by a slash from her dagger.

Emarel's magic arrow streaks toward the injured dottari, but it comes in at a bad angle and unfortunately is deflected by their shield.

Enara works her way around the dottari chasing her and slices at their hamstring from the back with her dagger. The dottari falls to their knees and the finishing blow from Enara's rapier only comes a short moment later.

Another big crit from Enara, total of 48 damage this turn! Hope you guys don't mind attack ordering being changed for effect, its all for the a e s t h e t i c I promise.

He'll then instruct the democratists to scatter, before things get ugly.

Lucius's words seem to shake the last dottari. They run back towards the opera house. Whether they seek reinforcements, healing, or both, the six of you are unsure—you don't stick around long enough to find out.

A Lovely Little Riot—End

For his fantastic and in-character speech, Lucius will gain a hero point and the party will gain 30xp! For Jilvi's clever maneuvering of the crowds she will also gain a hero point and the party will gain 30xp! Everyone has been fantastic thus far, and I'm sure all of you will have your shining hero moments to come.

The crowd has dispersed, and thanks in large part to your aid, it appears that none of the peaceful protesters were harmed. Not long after you led the park there is a rumor circulating that Nox scoured the park with a pair of hellhounds on leashes looking for a tall, blonde human man in chain armor.

Go ahead and use this time to discuss among yourselves in character, purchase basic items, etc. You don't have a lot of in-world time before the next event strikes, so just keep that in mind. Since talking is a free action, of course, don't worry about interacting too much.

As the group flees the scene, Hemdar pauses for a moment reaches next to the park, and reaches his arm down to the soil. A tiny humanoid made of plants bursts from the ground and clambers up Hemdar's arm to perch on his shoulder. He then hurries to rejoin the rest of the group.

Hemdar nods at Enara's suggestion."That sounds fine. I'm Hemdar, by the way, and this is Tictic." He indicates his small companion, who waves a green hand at the assembled group in greeting.

"Ohhhh, not good. Not good at all." Jilvi is jogging to keep up with the longer-legged folk and glances back they way they came every few seconds. "Enara, we killed Dottari. They're gonna be pissed, wherever we hole up had better be good because if they catch us..."

Fighting off another sudden wave of nausea, Enara speaks through gritted teeth, saying, "I know. But they came out of there with murder in their hearts. Catching up with the others, Lucius appears grim, but otherwise in control and clear headed. "Thank-you for the assistance back there. Unfortunately, we'll all likely have a mark on our heads now." Glancing back momentarily from the direction they just came to check if they were being followed, Lucius turned his attention back towards his new companions and nodded "I am Lucius Baradayne, and my apologies if you were dragged into this against your will... that was not my intent."

Nodding at Enara agreeably, Lucius adds "Quite right, it was nothing if not self-defense given that lethal manner in which they tried to shut down the protest," pausing, Lucius took a deep breath "no matter, it's done now. If you have somewhere for us to go, that would be most helpful."

You begin to hear the clatter of steel against steel in an alley very close by. Shortly after you hear a thud—the sound of someone hitting the cobblestones.

"My name is Enara. I'll let my companion introduce herself, if she wishes to," says Enara, tilting her head toward Jilvi. "Not my place to give it for her, after all."

Creeping up to the corner of the building, Enara listens intently and then looks back to the others. "I don't hear anything, now might be a good time to get moving. Shall we?"

Putting his hand up quickly, Lucius cuts off the conversation and motions for everyone to stop. Looking towards the others with an alarmed look, the armored warrior adds with a hushed voice "Hang on... someone is in alleyway." The sound of his companions' chatter brought Emarel out of his momentary lapse in concentration, and put back him squarely into reality. With that came the sharp pains that had caused him to lose focus in the first place. Following the rest of the group as they ran away from the protest, he had tried to block out the feelings of pain, succeeding only partly.

Looking at the others, he was able to put names to faces, finally. He adored the little plant that was with Hemdar; it reminded him of the forests back home. But this wasn't any time for that. The hand not holding his bow wrapped around his torso in a vain attempt to assuage the pain of his broken rib. "You may call me Emarel." His words came out low and raspy, as he struggled to breathe normally. "Somewhere to go would be nice. I could really use the rest." This time, the words were accompanied by painfully agonizing coughs that left blood in his hand. "Please, lead the way."

Upon hearing Lucius' words, Emarel gratefully stopped speaking. He moved his way to the back of the group. Whatever the trouble was, he wasn't in any shape to be confronting it head on. He could let them deal with it initially. Just in case, he put an arrow to his bow, and held it ready.
