Round 1
The bluish spider eyes the door but waits patiently, like a faithful hound, until Spider-Man moves first.
Spider-Man steps away from the doorway, and spews a large glob of sticky webbing at Ratesh. web: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 Ratesh is entangled in the webbing as the Spider-Man signals his spiders to attack!

He then fights through the entangling goo and takes a step back 10'.
If I'm reading the entangled condition right I can move at half speed. It's a move action instead of a 5' step, so this probably draws an AOO?
Konner Therinor |
Konner slides over to take on the spider in the doorway. He lashes out with his falcata and then readies to fend off any further attacks.

Round 1 (continued)
Those of you with Knowledge (dungeoneering) recognize this as an ettercap, a spider-human hybrid with a venomous bite.
Junko cast glitterdust into the room.
Will save DC17 - Spiderman: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 - success
Will save DC17 - Blue: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 - fail
Ratesh slashes at the blinded spider, badly wounding it.
Konner finishes off the blue spider and stands ready to defend against the rest.
Natula fills the room with a blast of cold as an icy finale.
Ref save DC20 - Spiderman: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The two spiders freeze solid, their now brittle legs shattering under the weight of their ungainly bodies. The ettercap still stands, though badly frozen and disoriented.

Round 2
The ettercap steps to the doorway, steam rising from its partially frozen body. It hisses in an alien language and lashes out at Konner, who stands in front of the doorway.

Konner manages to parry the creature's attacks, and his follow-up drops the ettercap quickly.
In the sudden silence that follows the end of combat, the only thing of note is that the magical aura you detected early remains in exactly the same place it was (which is in the same square the southwesterly-most spider corpse).
Ratesh |
Ratesh will approach the aura and cast detect magic, attempting to identify the source.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
GM Lamplighter |
The magical aura emanates from a golden ring, half-buried in the detritus covering the floor. Cleaning off the mud and filth, you can see the Iricca family crest engraved on it, with delicate Infernal text carved into the band, but the letters are hopelessly lost in the dense calligraphy. It has a moderate abjuration aura as well as a faint conjunction aura, but it's not one that you've seen before and can't really identify.
Poking through the rest of the room, you come across several rotted packs and pouches with a variety of gold and silver coins.
GM Lamplighter |
As you look over the room, several people step out of the underbrush. Three look like typical mercenary soldiers in leather armor and carry shortbows; each has an arrow knocked but not drawn. The woman wears simple red robes and wears her long hair in a thick braid. She is unarmed.
The woman addresses you in a strong, confident voice.
“Explorers! I am Pava Irrica, and I believe you have been traveling across Isger, collecting my family heirlooms. I understand you may not have known that I was alive; however, I am the rightful heir to my family's legacy." She holds up a sheaf of documents.
"I'm sure my documentation will prove my claim to the ring you've just found, along with the mace, rod, and locket. However you’ve come by them, I am willing to forgive and forget, as long as you turn them over to me peacefully. You can walk away, and I’ll not get the authorities involved. Now come out and sheathe your weapons.”
Perception checks if you'd like.
Natula Icosagon Thako |
Ratesh will approach the aura and cast detect magic, attempting to identify the source.
Likewise Takes 10 for 23, though the emblem sort of gives it away.
I'm going to assume that Kalas notices the visitors break cover before the speech, and that it perhaps gives Natula a bit of an empathic nudge.
Regardless, at the point she becomes aware that others have arrived she turns to Ratesh, while still inside the spider lair, and says: "Give me the ring."
So a few options: One, Natula can render the ring invisible (using her arcane bond or pearl of power to use the vanish spell again), and then perhaps hand it off to Kalas to fly off with. Two, she has a handy haversack whatever it is they may be using to trace the ring probably doesn't work in other dimensions. It is a delaying tactic only. Lastly, we don't have the other items on us, so she's going to have to go back, and talk to our patron anyhow.
Junko Kataribe |
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Junko tries to hide her surprise at the group as they reveal themselves. Trying to both buy time for the others and get information to the two inside, she calls out her own greeting in response. "Hello, Pava! I feel like we've met before, have you ever been to Whiterook? It's right on the Thundering River, near the border with Irrisen. Lovely little trading village, if you don't mind the cold." She continues rambling like this for several seconds, until someone interrupts her.
Taking 10 on Bluff for 20 to Convey Secret Message to the folks inside. Intended targets automatically understand it.
Hand Haversack sounds good! I could also use Charm Person and try to get us out of it that way, but she's not close enough and I wouldn't want her friends to notice.
GM Lamplighter |
Natula also can't identify the ring exactly. It seems to be able to summon a creature while also providing protection against that type of creature. And yes, Kalas does alert you to the presence of the approaching humans. Also, vanish doesn't work on objects, only creatures (presumably one of the limitations that got it down to first level).
Pava turns to Junko with a frown. "I've never been to Irrisen, I spent most of my adult life at a monastery here in Isger. After the war, I was an orphan, and they took me in." She looks around watchfully.
"Now, please give me my family's ring and the other items. As I said, I won't press charges or take retribution against you if you just provide me what is mine by right."
You get the sense that she's not as patient as you would guess if she spent her life in a monastery. Or maybe it's not a typical monastery she stayed at.
They're all using the bushes for concealment, and the merc in the red shirt has half-drawn his arrow in anticipation of a fight.
GM Lamplighter |
Konner Therinor |
sense motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
I'm no legal expert, but how are we to know that these documents are real? It would be nothing at all to scribble a few words on a sheet of paper and say that you are the heir... Konner says, skeptically.
Juxian Blakros |
"hmm...monastery...orphanage. You wouldn't happen to be a part of the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes would you? I've heard they study an effective form of martial arts called hamatulatsu." Juxian asks Pava.
Juxian then takes a look at the documents to make sure they are legitamate, "Well, let me just take a look at these papers. If these things are yours, you wouldn't want me giving them to the wrong person just because they said it was theirs, yeah?"

Natula calls to her bat in bat. "Squee!"
Plan B tie the ring to the bat's leg and turn Kalas invisible. Then Kalas flies away. Everyone can pass a zone of truth spell by honestly saying they don't know where the ring is. ;p
GM Lamplighter |
Pava raises an eyebrow at Konner, and lifts up one of the documents. The sheaf of papers unravels into a multi-page document which appears (at a distance) to be an extensively-annotated family tree of some sort.
@Juxian: "I see my Order's reputation precedes me. The Sisters have supported me through difficult times... but they have also given me the skills to take what si rightfully mine if necessary." Her voice turns hard.
"Please, do not approach any closer. Place the items on the ground and leave, and you will face no retribution from me or my Sisters. Ignore me at your peril."
Pava starts slightly at Natula's screech which calls Kalas to her, but she is even more startled by what happens next.
GM Lamplighter |
<Crack-BOOOOOOOOOOM!>
With an ear-splitting thunderclap, a creature appears sitting on top of a pillar to the west. Her long black hair seems blown by a gale, yet her black feathered wings seem untouched by the fury. She wears black leather armor, and her longbow is wreathed in flame.
“I see the Irrica family line isn’t entirely wiped out... yet,” she observes.
“And facing off for a fight! How singularly predictable. You mortals make such tepid entertainment." She gazes around the assembled group, taking in both visible PCs and Pava's entourage.
"But I am merciful. Give me the fragments you’ve collected, and I’ll let you all live.” She leans back on her precarious perch, lifting her legs out in front of her as if relaxing on a sofa.
Pava scowls at the winged creature. “You serve the Irricas, devil; I know you cannot harm me." Pava calls to you. "Now, you lot, quickly! Give me the ring, and I’ll command it to spare you.”

All of the Natulas in the room smirk, and then don the ring on their left hands.
She steps outside showing off her new bauble in the light. "It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Don't you think, Lady Irrica?" she says.
