What's the etiquette on posting turn order here for non-combat scenes? I'm dying to get another post in but I don't want to be "greedy" about it and apart from Talib the other characters haven't yet responded to the new prompt. Is this "sharing is caring", or "devil take the hindmost"?
GM Omelas |
I have no problem with you posting before others have responded to new information, as long as we keep it to a reasonable level and there's still space for others to do things and have their fun. I also encourage people posting more than once after 24 hours have passed since the latest GM post or when they have been prompted by another PC (like one PC asking another's opinion).
It's all very subjective, of course, so if anyone feels differently let me know (either here on in private).
Sinésiel Arvine |
Admittedly I feel a bit bad about my low post density, but weekends aren't super great for me to post on unfortunately. This is my first PbP game, and I gotta say you guys are rather inspiring. I wish I had this kind of solid roleplay from my face to face games, it's really something!
That being said, please feel free to keep posting even if I haven't quite caught up. I'm still learning this whole thing so having more examples of play is always good for me!
Sinésiel Arvine |
I'm genuinely impressed that you and I keep posting at nearly the exact same time, Misfire. Its been pretty funny.
Misfire Mylok |
It's a coincidence, I'm sure.
Definitely.
Totally not planned.
Nope.
GM Omelas |
@Mylok: be careful, in many cultures installing 24-hour surveillance equipment on someone else's computer without their permission is a social faux pas.
@Sinésiel: happy to hear it's been a good experience so far!
Folks, Siné's comment on weekends made me realise I said we'd discuss whether weekend posts were going to be a thing. Considering there are some whose availability is sketchier outside of weekdays, I'd say we just stick to Mon-Fri. If you still feel like posting on Saturday or Sunday, I'll be checking check the forums anyhow and might reply, but avoid pushing things forward.
Does that sound reasonable to you?
Talib Abd al-Abadar |
I'm just about as ready to post on weekends as I'm on weekdays, but I don't mind if we have to wait until Monday to advance the plot—it might give people time to catch up, if we manage to keep up this ridiculous posting rate. Things do tend to slow down after a while, though.
Talienda Blackhorn |
I'm cool with that. Just a note, I'm not able to post until the evenings on weekdays. That's why I'm only posting just now. I hope that I'm doing pretty good on nailing the fear and terror our little sorceress is feeling.

[...] not the least because he doesn't have easy access to the body which hangs a good 7 metres from the ground.
Uh, yeah, I didn't quite picture him being that high up, but that's fine. Talib's always up for a challenge. :D
I hope that I'm doing pretty good on nailing the fear and terror our little sorceress is feeling.
Certainly! I'm looking forward to seeing where she crosses that line from helplessness into more uncharted territory, wherever her particular character arc might lead her. For my part, I'm struggling to portray someone who is competent and confident in his abilities, while still trying to react to all the terrible happenings in a believably human manner. Oh, the woes of playing a first-level character who's not a little baby! :P
Talienda Blackhorn |
Detachment and jaded professionalism could work for that. He's seen a lot of the bad so while this is extreme, it's not that shocking. On the inside, though, there's a part of him that's sobbing in a corner at the horrific nature of whatever has us trapped here.
GM Omelas |
You're both doing great, in my opinion. The dice have thrown you a bit of a curve ball now though, Talib (sorry about the Wis damage -_-).
@Talienda, I was thinking about sometimes imposing will saves on you as a reactions to some events. If you fail, you cast a random and harmless cantrip (say, some dancing lights, lifting something with prestidigitation, etc). Would you be ok with that? Is it something you think aligns with how you want to play the character? Also, no problem at all regarding when you post.
For what it's worth: I post on the evenings in my timezone (CEST, usually between 20:00 and 21:00) and sometimes resolve a few of your actions during the morning (like today).
robothedino |
Against my better judgment, something I should clarify about Skurly's stat block- the "+2 against fear" there is a total, not an additional bonus. His Craven racial trait gives him a -2 vs. fear effects, so his +4 Will save is modified to +2. The same is true for his initiative score- while he has at least 1 Luck point he gets an extra +2 to initiative, for a total of +6, not a +6 bonus on top of his regular +4.
Should this be formatted differently for clarity, and express them as a modifier rather than a total?
GM Omelas |
Ah, yeah, I had completely misread your will saves as normally +4, +6 when against fear effects. Thanks for clarifying, though it doesn't change the outcome of this last save (it's not clear whether this was a fear effect and in any case your roll was good enough).
You don't need to change the formatting now that we have clarified it, but thanks for offering.
Also, for those curious: this was a haunt, not a trap. Haunts do not emmanate magic auras until they are activated, which is why Rissi's detect magic did not reveal anything.
Talib Abd al-Abadar |
You're both doing great, in my opinion. The dice have thrown you a bit of a curve ball now though, Talib (sorry about the Wis damage -_-).
Well, I can deal with 1 point of damage, since it doesn't really do anything yet, mechanically. Any more, and I start sucking at everything I'm supposed to be good at, except fighting. For now, it's a good chance to show Talib off balance for a bit...
GM Omelas |
@Adam/Talienda: Gah, sorry, didn't mean to steal your thunder! At least it was a successful save, so I guess no harm done. I'll leave it up to you to handle it.
Talienda Blackhorn |
@Adam/Talienda: Gah, sorry, didn't mean to steal your thunder! At least it was a successful save, so I guess no harm done. I'll leave it up to you to handle it.
No! It's fine! I wasn't trying to make you feel like you were stepping on my toes. I'm totally cool with it.
Sinésiel Arvine |
I'm just waiting for the dice curveball where everyone notices Sinésiel is completely scared out of her wits. That's what separates TRPGs from free-form roleplay, I feel, is that external force to guide narration.
Misfire Mylok |
Every time I tried to post yesterday I got an error.
I just modified/added to what I had and put that up.
Misfire Mylok |
@Siné Yyyyeah, Mylok isn't beating that bluff check lol
GM Omelas |
@Talienda: ok, then. In any case, I will only do minor things: main reveal is obviously completely on you.
@Mylok: no problem. I also had some trouble yesterday, actually, but it eventually cleared up.
@Siné: yeah, I agree with you, and it's actually what I enjoy the most about them. It adds a certain degree of randomness that you need to work around and half the fun becomes turning that randomness into an interesting story.
Misfire Mylok |
Hi everyone, I wanted to apologize for my absence Friday and over the weekend. I had to rush out of the office Friday because my wife was extremely ill and couldn’t care for our 3 month old by herself (she’s freelancing from home at the moment). I ended up spending all weekend taking care of both of them. I have updates coming.
Misfire Mylok |
I went ahead and added the scroll to the loot sheet with Rissi currently in possession. I left the sell value blank as I'm not 100% on the value of a scroll with multiple spells.
GM Omelas |
As far as I understand, the cost of a magic scroll is mostly due to special inks, spell components and etc, meaning that the price of a scroll with four spells is the same as four separate magic scrolls. So, 100GP (I added it to the list).
Also, I read Rissi's "I'm a hard" in the same way as Mylok and was very much "damn, Rissi's a badass".
One thing for future rooms: do you have a marching order? I'm just placing you randomly, but you might want to have a more disciplined approach in case a door leads to an encounter, trap, etc.
Talib Abd al-Abadar |
Talienda would benefit most from the scroll, obviously, but I don't think there's been much narratively to suggest that. I guess we'll toss it at her as soon as we've got justification for doing so.
Rissi Than |
Nah! Rissi would never say that. Just a typo cause I did that from my tablet. I don't actually know if it was spell correction error or just cause I can't type on this thing....
"I'm a BARD! I use words!" LOL!!!
GM Omelas |
So, you're heading back to the courtroom, correct? Or are you going to first try and open the remaining doors?
Talib Abd al-Abadar |
Talib has something to say about going back in just a sec. Regardless of what we decide, we probably want to go through all the other rooms on level one, first—gather some more ammunition for the eventual firefight, as it were.
GM Omelas |
Ok. Will delay my post until tomorrow morning (CEST) or until a couple more people have chimed in.
Misfire Mylok |
I do want to point out that Mylok is mostly talk.
robothedino |
Can anyone enlighten me as to how the dice system on the site works with respect to "remembering" rolls? A moment ago my Religion roll was a 25 and my attack roll was a 20, and in the past it's seemed to me that rolls would remain static after making edits- now it seems to have re-rolled my dice, having made an edit. At the end of the day, random is random, but I'm a bit curious as to what the expected behavior is.
GM Omelas |
@robo: it's indeed a glitch. Only happened to me once and even then it was after a huge delay (2 weeks) between me the first and second time I checked the roll values.
@Adam: I just realised I missed Talienda's name on the list, even though I did roll initiative for her. She acts at the same time as Rissi.
Sinésiel Arvine |
Sorry about the back and forth posting, I'll be out all weekend for my anniversary with my partner so I don't know that I'll be very active on the forums.
GM Omelas |
Completely not a thing you need to apologise for. I for one am always interested in these exchanges between PCs (like Talienda and Talib or Sinésiel and Rissi).
And congratulations to you and your partner. Enjoy the weekend =)

Shorter post from me. Someone in my office downloaded a virus and shut us down yesterday. I've been made part of the team to help wipe computers and I'm now posting from my phone, on my break, from the office, where I can't actually work. Yay.
Mylok loads the flint into the cock. With it half-cocked, upends the powder horn down into muzzle and tamps it down with the ramrod.
"Well," he wraps a metal ball in a patch and drops it into the muzzle, "I believe that gift of yours is going to prove more and more useful."
Mylok slips the pistol into its holster and kneels down by the pile of now-still bones. Good dog, he says to himself.
I'm sorry you're having to deal with all that bullsh*t, but I have to point out how... well, impressively phallic this entire post is. :D
Talib Abd al-Abadar |
Just as a heads-up: I'll be out of town until next Friday. There's a chance I won't have access to stable internet all the way through, and regardless, I'll be posting from my phone, if at all. I'll certainly try my best, but if you don't hear from me for a couple of days, that's why.
GM Omelas |
Thanks for letting us know, Talib.
And hope things at your job are going a bit better now, Mylok =)
Talib Abd al-Abadar |
I'd very much like to know how the crows are affected by Mylok and Sinésiel's attacks, respectively, before taking my actions. I don't really have anything for swarms, if that's what these are.
Misfire Mylok |
It didn't actually occur to me that they could be swarms for some reason. I used the word as a descriptor only. But that makes perfect sense.
GM Omelas |
Yes, these are swarms of tiny (instead of fine/diminutive) creatures. Your attacks have limited efficacy, so you might have to get creative there.
@robo: no problem and thanks for letting us know.
