Flenn asks Therseis, pointing at the corpses of the crab creatures, "You know anything about those? They on the ground too, or just these floating cities?"

He assists Korvin with the smuggling plan. "We gonna finish exploring first, or smuggle them onto the ship now and then finish up the exploration?"

Therseis, listening to the Starfinders discussing how to discreetly move the robot and the drone onto the shuttle, volunteers, "Let me help, I can distract the other researchers."

With Therseis' assistance, the team successfully manage the task.

In response to Flenn's question regarding the creatures they fought, Therseis informs them that they likely have a distant common ancestor with the copaxi and that some of the more affluent on the planet use the creatures as guard animals.

Once the Starfinders are ready, Therseis accompanies them to the observation tower. On the way, they explain that a group of scavengers, copaxis, have set up camp in the ruins and that the research team have been unable to approach without provoking an armed response. Therseis suggests that the Starfinders may have an easier time communicating with the scavengers as they are clearly not local authorities. They then remind the team of the traditional copaxis greeting as it is so much a part of the culture.

A small cluster of ruined buildings stands within a few hundred feet of the city’s edge. The only building with walls high enough to provide protection from the icy wind stands adjacent to a precarious stone tower some forty feet tall. The building has no roof, and much of its walls have collapsed, revealing signs of a makeshift camp within.

As the Starfinders approach, they notice two copaxis. Surprisingly they appear to be equipped with static arc pistols, basic Pact Worlds weapons, though those weapons are not currently drawn.

The Scavengers watch the approaching Starfinders warily. They are surprised when the team greets them in the copaxis manner, then slowly return the greeting with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity.

After the greetings are complete and Rahdokama speaks, one of them replies in basic common, ”We only want to live life on our own terms, to survive we must be prepared.”

The other then asks a little belligerently, ”Who are you? Why do you come here?”

I accidentally gave you all a nice discount, it is actually 600 +100 credits in Tier 3-4. It was a genuine mistake though so I will stand by it. On the other hand, there was the possibility to negotiate down, so we can call it good.

As the team converse with these copaxis, they discover their primary goals are survival, personal enrichment, and thrill-seeking in roughly that order. Rapid copaxi expansion enriched many but also left many financially struggling to keep up, including these scavengers. They are fed up with the widening gap between rich and poor on Tabrid Minor. They believe their people’s rapid industrialization has done more harm than good and are eager to earn enough credits to buy passage to other worlds.

The scavengers’ stash contains a journal preserved in a sealed container.

Culture with the aid of the translation software:

DC 15
Spoiler:
You learn the “scientists” stationed here were servants of Tabantria’s magical aristocracy; they observed the planet to learn how best to manipulate and exploit its natural and magical resources, especially copi. Most of the notes concern the process of cultivating copi to make objects—and even cities—float high above the planet’s surface. In the journal’s final pages, you learn that several of the scholars stationed here, and many others across Tabrid Minor, received the revelation of Drift travel. Instead of being celebrated, they were shunned and eventually executed after a failed coup attempt. The unidentified author of the journal supported this decision and outed several colleagues to the government; they justified this action by predicting that the spread of Drift technology would cause rapid, irreversible, and damaging industrialization, violently disrupting the status quo. The final page of the journal states the author’s fears that further conflict seems inevitable, as the Signal could not possibly be passed off as insanity—a “Message of Madness”—forever.

The scavengers have managed to uncover an ancient weapon from the city: a pulse staccato rifle (Starfinder Armory 20) that they are willing to part with.

“So here is the story. Seems that this city was indeed mostly magical for the start. I think they were harvesting that antigravity coral stuff, copi, right? They used that stuff and magic to Make the city float. Also probably floated that flying vehicle. Anyway, they did indeed get the signal from Triune. But their leaders were afraid that what they’d have to do to get ready to build ships. I don’t understand the details, but I gather that they realized they’d need to industrialize, doing Damage to the planet, to make use of the signal. This makes sense as drift drives need to be technological. So they tried to suppress those that got the signal. Violently. I think that those that got the signal tried a coup but it didn’t end well for them. Seems like they ended up industrializing after that anyway so it was sadly all for naught. Man, this is. . . sad. These guys need to get help from the pact worlds. We can provide them enough materials so that they don’t need to use this copi stuff, and then they could cultivate and study it, sharing its information with us. It seems interesting stuff.”

Flenn shakes his head. "The mistake of an extinct aristocracy is one thing, but these current ruling blokes had Therseis lie to us, and it sounds like they've still got these backward rules in place."

VC Australia - WA

Please feel free to continue to RP and bring Therseis into the discussion if you want. Otherwise, you can meet back up with them, or just gain directions to the final area to explore.

Although the research team has already explored much of the university’s campus, one area the team has yet to explore is a massive open-roofed stadium on the north side of the campus. Whenever the copaxis approach the arena, unbearable headaches force them to turn back.

A round, open arena stands at the edge of the city’s abandoned university. Tiered seating areas once provided space for hundreds of people to observe the spectacles that took place in the large central playing field. A faded mural at the entrance to the stands depicts a dozen copaxis flying among black spheres; some of the copaxis carry short rods, and others pass fist-sized cubes to one another. Detritus litters the outer stands, but all the litter closer to the centre has been pulled into the field by ten floating black spheres, each five feet in diameter. The spheres float in erratic patterns, crisscrossing the arena in a series of ellipses. As they float and spin, debris orbits the spheres, lazily flowing from one to the next. Several intact objects float amid the debris, including a few books, weapons, and other items.

To retrieve the objects you must enter the playing field and, through luck and skill, learn how to navigate the hazardous arena expertly enough to retrieve the objects. Navigating the playing field requires a successful Athletics or Acrobatics check. To retrieve the objects, those participating must collectively accumulate enough successes before failing too many times. Each time a team member attempts an Athletics or Acrobatics check, other team members can attempt to aid the check using the same skill or Physical Science; a failed attempt to aid another does not count against the limit of failures for the group as a whole.

A solarian (or any other Starfinder with access to graviton mode) can enter graviton mode in the arena as if they were in combat. While in graviton mode, they gain a +2 bonus to the required Athletics and Acrobatics checks. If a character has the gravity anchor, gravity boost, or gravity hold stellar revelations (or has some other method of adjusting gravity at a moment’s notice) this bonus increases to +4.

As usual, suggestions for other creative solutions will be entertained.

With the assistance of their teammates predicting the effects of the various gravitational bodies on each other, Shelldrake manages to navigate the arena and retrieve several items of interest to their investigation and to the research team. Once or twice they appreciate the tech they are wearing which lets them withstand some of the less pleasant consequences of the ever-shifting gravitational waves.

During this process, the team discover that the black spheres are made of highly concentrated and graviton-enhanced copi. The items recovered include a book that looks to be a rules manual and playbook for parabolas.

Culture to translate the book:

DC 15
Spoiler:
You learn copaxis played parabolas to hone their gravitational influence. You also discover the basics of how the game was played—though coming to a full understanding of the rules would take several hours.

When the team reconvene with Therseis the copaxi reveals that the copaxis have known how to manipulate the gravitational properties of copi for millennia. In fact, their starships’ hulls and engines are made of a highly processed form of copi, a sort that is mostly inert but durable, malleable, and space-worthy. Ther were unaware that all copaxis—not just those who lived in the cities— could once harness their connection to copi and produce magic.

Among the floating debris, was discovered a set of spark polarity gauntlets (Starfinder Armory 12) and a z-boson crystal (Starfinder Armory 26).

Clearly, you've got some issues goin' on here, but you sure you want to leave instead of staying to help reform things?" He shrugs. "Maybe bein' raised on a planet o' Drow skewed my perspective, but your people seem more confused than ... despotic."

VC Australia - WA

Therseis is intrigued by the discoveries made at the arena. As already established they had come to question the sparse official story provided by the planetary government. Helping the Starfinders piece together the history of the sky cities’ magical aristocracy, the exploitation of robot labourers, the silencing of those who heard the Signal, and the bloody coups that followed has been rewarding for the copaxi. While Therseis finds the cover-up distasteful, they find solace in the knowledge that the Pact Worlds evaluation team now have an accurate view of copaxi history. Furthermore, the researcher notes that these actions occurred several lifetimes ago; this does not excuse the government for perpetuating these myths, but none of them is directly responsible for committing these atrocious behaviours. Whatever the decision may be, Therseis confirms their request to return with the Starfinders adding that they would like to act as an ambassador to further the relationship between the Pact Worlds and their home planet. They see an even more urgent need to seek assistance to avoid further degradation of the planet and to rediscover a working balance for utilizing the copi while also encouraging its healthy expansion and recovery. They also again express interest in perhaps joining the Starfinders in the future. Therseis is ready to abide by whatever decisions the Starfinders and ultimately the Pact Worlds make.

Now that your investigation has concluded, you must decide on your recommendation to the Stewards: should they support or oppose the copaxi petition for protectorate status? You are encouraged to discuss your findings as much as you like, but this is not a group decision; each of you is expected to file an independent report. Anyone who is more comfortable giving their final decision privately is welcome to PM me.

Flenn files a report approving the copaxi request for protectorate status, though recommends the Stewards and Starfinder Society make clear to the copaxi government that they are aware of the planet's history, and that the Pact Worlds (generally) grant rights to artificial life forms. He recommends part of the protectorate petition be that the planetary government commit to transparency about their history, as well as agreement to respect the rights of such beings, whether they visit from the Pact Worlds or arise from within their own society. He also recommends that Therseis be considered, after proper training, for an ambassador role in this capacity. He also recommends that astrophysicists and solarians be notified of the curious gravitational properties associated with the copi, so it can be studied before corporations move in to exploit these fascinating resources on the planet, and volunteers to be part of such a research team.
