Lexi notices Adistan looking pale an instant before he sinks to the ground.

"I'm on it!" she tells the others, doing her best to staunch the Andoran sailor's bleeding. Although she fumbles a bit more than she did with Verris, Adistan's breathing becomes regular, and the aasimar girl silently congratulates herself on another job well done and another fellow Pathfinder's life saved.

Amelexis glares at Gurk for executing the blonde woman; she hopes Adistan fell unconscious before witnessing the act, certain the honorable warrior wouldn't approve. "Don't just stand there on top of her!" she snaps at the goblin. "Loot her and drag her inside and dump her in the pit!"

Then she looks around a bit before asking Davor if he has any healing powers left that might get Verris and/or Adistan back on their feet. She also asks Bixby his plan for the two thugs he captured.

Davor has no healing left and shrugs to Amelexis. "Unfortunately I don't have any more healing powers for today. We need to grab who we came for, get a coach, and leave immediately."

Davor helps dragging everyone into the corner of an alley and tries to find a kid or messenger just around the street corner, while staying within view of the party. If he finds one, he gives the kid a silver piece and show him a gold piece, "There you go lad, take the silver. If you can go get me a coach and have him wait right here around the corner, I'll give you a gold piece. Tell the driver we need a big coach for 7 or 8 people."

Davor then goes back to the alley corner where everyone is to talk with the party and bound thugs.

Bixby's blood boils as Gurk executes one of the thugs.

"Stop stabbing things, you blood-thirty little killer! And no, you're not going to stab these. We'll question them and contact the authorities. The can rot in The Hells."

As they come to, Bixby looms over them and fires off questions in rapid succession. "Who are you, and who do you work for? Why do you want Natasha? Are you looking for something she has? Do you know this goblin? Does he work for you?"

Bimble rapid fires questions at the thugs once they are awake and seeing they don't have many other options they answer in turn. After hearing their answers it is clear that the blonde woman, her name was Terisha, hired them, they were after Natasha because that is what the blonde woman wanted, they don't know anything about looking for something she has, the definitely don't know the goblin and he is not working for them.

Just to be clear, Gurk killed the woman not one of the thugs. Giving you all an opportunity to ask any follow up questions before we move on to getting you out of there with the coach that Davor is summoning.

Lexi casts detect magic and scans the woman, the fallen thug, and the two captives. Then she starts looting the old-fashioned way.

If we find a healing potion (as the GM seems to be hinting we might), I say we use it on Adistan, as he's likely strong enough to carry Verris.

Bixby sighs as the thugs don't seem to have any helpful information.

"We're not going to kill them, Gurk! We're going to send them to prison--to The Hells. That's the worst prison in Magnamar," he says.

While the others search the fallen, Bixby tries to summon the authorities. If I can't find any nearby, we'd probably better just leave them tied up and get back.

Lexi temporarily ignores the other gear when she finds some potions on the fallen.

"These three are potions of cure light wounds," she announces. "I'm not sure what the bluish ones are."

Moving to Adistan, she props him up and pours a healing potion down his throat. When the Andoran man's eyes open, Lexi gives him a quick smile and says, "Welcome back. Good guys won!"

Next she moves to Verris and repeats the process. When Verris's eyes flutter open, Lexi likewise gives the archer a relieved smile. "I called out to you while you were unconscious but you didn't hear me," she tells her fellow aasimar before offering a hand to help her back to her feet.

Not long after Lexi gives Verris and Adistan a potion each to heals some of their wounds and wake them up a rickety covered wagon pulls up around the corner. It's nothing to look at, but it will do the job of transporting you all across town. You hear a man shout out "Some kid said someone needed transportation. I can get ya where ya need ta go, just 1 silver a person."

Feel free to talk/RP, but you have transportation when you are ready to leave.

Knew I'd forgotten an important detail....

Once Adistan and Verris are back up and about, Lexi casts prestidigitation and magically cleans up all the bloodstains and other dirt and filth the group had accumulated in their travails, making them presentable for the return trip to Heidmarch Manor. She's even nice and cleans up Natalya, though she gets no thanks for that good deed (possibly because the young troublemaker is currently gagged).

Lexi will let someone else pay for her passage back, in case the coachman turns out to be a wererat. If she must pay her own way, she'll reluctantly give up a silver coin from her arsenal.

"My thanks, Lady Dusk," Temmer says as he returns to consciousness. "And Lady Verris has survived also? Well done. I thought the butcher's bill would be larger the way that started off. We made some terrible mistakes, all, and shall have to be more aware if we ever work together in the future."

He shakes his head at the unlikelihood of that as, though they somewhat accomplished what Lady Heidmarch had them set out to do, in truth they left a bloody mess behind them.

"We'd best get back, however."

Ready to move on. At 2 hp, I think.

Verris groans and her eyes flutter open as the effects of the healing potion take effect. She sees Lexi above her with her hand outstretched. Taking Lexi's hand, she gets to her feet with a groan. "Ugh...feels like a cart rolled over me! Last thing I remember was that thug smackin' me. Thanks fer the help! Looks like ye managed to sort out the rest after they got me," she finishes as she looks around.

She nods at what Adistan has to say, pointing at the covered wagon. "Reckon we oughta get Natalya to the manor before more folks turn up lookin' fer her. Not sure I can get into another scrap right now and still walk out of it."

With no authorities nearby, Bixby leaves the thugs tied.

Standing over them, he says "Next time, I'll let the goblin have his way with you! If I see either of you again, remember the bright lights won't be colored, but will beckon you to your eternal reward!"

Harrumphing, he joins the others in the coach.

"Just leave them--they can think about their life choices while they look for someone to untie them."

I don't have alchemy Davor. I'm not really a skills guy with 2 per level base.

Outside Natalya's Hideout

Lexi seems absurdly pleased by the praise Adistan and Verris toss her way. "Well, yes--I managed to hold the thugs at bay until Davor and Gurk arrived and took down their leader. Then I suggested they flee while they were still able, and the men took me up on my generous offer." As an afterthought, Lexi adds, "Oh, and Bixby took out two more minions with that colorful spell of his."

When Adistan mentions that the group made some terrible mistakes in the execution of the hunt for and capture of Natalya, Amelexis first considers countering that it was some damned fine teamwork that pulled the group's collective bacon out of the fire, but...the Andoran man's words ultimately ring true in her ears.

And a lot of those mistakes were yours, Lexi reflects nervously. That's why you made sure to administer the healing potions to Adistan and Verris yourself--so yours would be the first face they looked upon when regaining consciousness, and likely they'd feel a measure of gratitude toward you....

NO! I healed them because I like them! Lexi thought, wondering when she'd become such a manipulative little stinker. Still shaking from her conflicting thoughts and emotions, the aasimar lass again puked a bit and used a prestidigitation spell to freshen her breath. After all, it was a long ride back to Heidmarch Manor....

During The Carriage Ride

Lexi's back to her silent self for the ride back to the Pathfinder Lodge...yet at the same time she's not really the same quiet girl you all met a few days back. She's not talking, but neither do her strange eyes feature her usual vacant stare. No, there are gears turning in her mind and the girl still seems troubled and anxious. And she's still sweating and shaking. Finally she speaks up.

"Are we really going to give Lady Heidmarch what we found...what we bled for and almost died for? It's worth a lot more than the gold she's offered us, I'm quite sure of that. She's using us for her own fame and profit."

The driver is happy with his payment and you all pile into the covered wagon while dragging Natalya in as well. The group makes their way back through town without incident and eventually make it to the Pathfinder lodge. You see Sheila standing in the doorway waiting for you. It's likely Troy saw you coming and alerted her.

Arriving at the Manor

Davor is first to hoist is backpack on his shoulders and grabbing weapons and equipment, well before the coach stops. When the door opens, he steps out confidently, puts on a respectful smile, and bows to the lady, saying, "Well met Lady Heidmarch! it has been quite the adventure, to say the least... may we bring Natalya inside? I'm afraid the poor thing has had her mind commandeered by the thing you sent us for... and now our own Amelexis is... ahem, putting on a brave face carrying it as well... but I'd say we're out of our depth with this and it's quite vile, resulting in mood changes in the hapless victim bearing it and generating... false feelings of superiority towards others."

During Carriage Ride

As she gets into the wagon Verris passes Davor two silver to cover her part of the carriage saying, "My share." She groans softly as she sits back on the seat, spending most of the trip trying to prevent the jolts and bumps from affecting her wounds and causing her more pain. She notes Lexi's change of persona and occasionally glances at her worriedly when she's not looking.

When Lexi asks her question, Verris looks over at her with a worried frown and replies. "That's what we agreed to before we left. She did warn us it could be dangerous. Besides, I'm just lookin' forward to some rest, and maybe some healin'... Oh and a bath. A house that big has to have a bath and some nice hot water right?!"

At the manor

Verris allows the others to exit before her before getting up with another soft groan. She keeps an eye on Lexi as she exits to make sure she doesn't bolt when exiting the carriage. Provided everything goes as planned, she'll chime in with, "Not sure what yer artefact is but, like Davor said, it seems to change the person that holds it. Might be why Natalya never came back here in the first place. Should keep that in mind when judgin' her for her actions... and fer whether or not you wanna handle the thing."

Davor starts laughing. Almost uncontrollably, upon hearing Gurk's single-mindedness in all things. After a good 40 seconds, the laughter ceases, and pats Gurk's back with a giant hand, saying, "Oh, and Lady Heidmarch: this little one here has been charmed by Natalya, if things weren't complicated enough..."

Lexi seems highly annoyed that her words are apparently falling upon deaf ears. She frowns when Verris says she intends to honor the one-sided agreement previously made with Lady Heidmarch, but Lexi still tells her fellow aasimar where the baths in the manor are located. As the carriage pulls up, Verris gets the feeling that Lexi is seriously considering making a break for it. In the end though, whether due to a sense of party unity or maybe simply being too ill to have any hope of running away, Amelexis gets out of the carriage and faces Sheila and the manor. Flashing glares at her fellow Pathfinders that reflects both anger and a sense of betrayal, the skinny know-it-all marches up to the front door and straight past the Venture-Captain without a hint of acknowledgement.

Bixby folds his arms across his chest during the carriage ride, still not sure how much to trust his fellows.

Either they are in on it with Gurk, or they are obtuse!

When they arrive, he exits the carriage and addresses Lady Heidmarch.

"We have completed the mission you assigned us, but there have been serious complications. Though I will submit a full written report with additional details, my suspicion that Gurk is a sleeper Szarni agent were confirmed. The rest of these initiates do not seem to see it, but the evidence is there."

Frowning, he says "We will need to triple our precautions. What of Natasha and the magical item? What are the next steps?"

Sheila listens to the each in turn and smiles at Gurks excitement, but as Lexi attempts to storm past the Venture Captain puts her staff across the walk way stopping Lexi in her tracks. "Perhaps if you could show me what you found I could give you more information about it. Let us see your new treasure and then we can secure Natalya inside."

Lexi's eyes widen and her jaw drops her when Lady Heidmarch bars entrance to the Pathfinder Lodge. Then her jaw clenches and her teeth grit, as she glares at the older woman with anger...no, RAGE. Although Lexi says nothing, her eyes scream How dare you! at the venture-captain. For a long awkward pause, it seems Lexi's about to take a swing at Lady Heidmarch (and then subsequently get battered into a bloody pulp by the stronger, armed woman) but then Lexi's eyes calm, taking on a crafty look.

"'Let us see your new treasure,'" the young aasimar echoes the venture-captain's words, her tone mocking. "I think I'll hold you to those words: 'Your Treasure.' As in MINE! And who is this 'us' to whom you refer? I see only you standing before us...blocking entry into a Pathfinder Lodge to a group of Pathfinders who have every right to enter. 'Us?' Do you think you're bigger and better than the rest of the Pathfinders...better than everyone else in this city?"

Taking several steps back from the venture-captain, Lexi takes off her backpack, places it on the path, and roots around inside, never once taking her narrowed eyes off Sheila. Lexi pulls out Natalya’s red bandana and unfolds it. Holding the recovered shard between her thumb and forefinger, the young aasimar holds it up for the venture-captain to behold from afar; when Sheila moves in to get a better look, Lexi reflexively hides the shard inside her closed fist.

"That's enough Lexi. Place the shard on the ground in front of Lady Heidmarch. Slowly. Then back the hell off! If you don't do this, it will be proof to me that you're no longer yourself in any way, and I'll tackle or exorcise the heck out of you, in no particular order!!! Lady Heimarch: I would use magic to hold this shard aloft for inspection instead of touching it with your bare hands... see what it has done for Lexi. This thing is pure evil if you ask me."

Normally would not roll against PC but in this case I'm really rolling against the evil influence, not Lexi

Bixby's eyes go wide as Lexi's demeanor changes dramatically.

"Another traitor? It is as I suspected--the Society is already being infiltrated from multiple directions. I stand at the ready, Lady Heidmarch. Give the word, and I will subdue this turncoat!"

Lexi's attention turns from Lady Heidmarch to Davor and Bixby. She doesn't appear angry at either, but seems shocked and hurt that they're not supporting her as she stands up for their rights. It doesn't look like she has any intention of complying with the half-orc's order; in fact, she may be getting ready to make a break for it.

As Davor moves toward Lexi to grab a hold of her Sheila puts her hand up to motion him to stop and shakes her head toward him.

She smiles to Lexi "Well, since you seem so attached perhaps I can tell you a little secret about this new treasure you've found. Give me one moment." She heads back inside for a brief moment.

You hear a drawer open and close and Sheila promptly returns with her staff in one hand and a small scarlet and blue stone in the other. She shows the stone to Lexi and says "This shard you found, I think you might be happy to see the results of placing this stone in it. Of course that is if you think you are capable of handling such an important task." she challenges Lexi.

"Of course I'm capable!" Lexi snaps peevishly at Lady Heidmarch. "I'm not a child!"

Not certain what the stone is and suspecting some sort of trick, Lexi nonetheless fiddles with the shard and the stone until they suddenly merge and fuse!

"Whoa! What just happened?" she asks Sheila, her curiosity easily getting the better of her strange recent anger toward the Pathfinder venture-captain.

Verris looks on the proceedings with an uncertain expression on her face. She's unsure of whether she should intervene or not. She looks on curiously when Lady Heidmarch brings out the stone and the stone merges with the shard.

As Lexi takes the stone she places it in the shard. It sits there for a moment and then the shard starts to absorb it, until the stone is covered in the copper looking metal.

Lexi:

As the stone is absorbed, you feel like a weight is lifted off of you and the overwhelming pride-fullness you have felt dissipates and your normal self comes back as you realize how horrible you have been. The emotions of it all are almost too much to contain.

Davor recognizes the turmoil in the young lady, and his defensive stance softens into a hug. Wrapping his big arms around the petite aasimar, he says with a low voice, "There, young lass. There... You did good considering the evil magic. A lesser person would have tried to murder us all. 'Tis over now..."

Amelexis's eyes widen as she has a sudden epiphany of how she's behaved ever since taking the coppery shard from Natalya. She stiffly accepts Davor's hug at first, but before long she's returning it sobbing slightly.

"I would never hurt you...any of you," she sniffles softly. After a pause, she adds, "I'm sorry for my poor behavior."

When she and Davor part, Lexi stands silently. She's unable to make eye contact with Lady Heidmarch. Eventually, she's able to build up enough steel in her spine to briefly glance at the kind woman who took her in, fed her, equipped her, and offered her a job in the Pathfinder Society. Sickened by some of the things she thought and said about the venture-captain, Amelexis shakingly holds out her hand with the shard in its palm toward Lady Sheila, closes it again reflexively, and then again holds it out to her superior.

"What is that thing?" she asks, glad to be rid of the shard yet still desiring its power greatly.

Verris smiles warmly at Lexi and pats her on the shoulder, gently, so as not to upset her own wounds. "We knew it wasn't the real you who was actin' like that. That thing made ye act like that. Glad to have ye back with us!"

She looks to Lady Heidmarch as Lexi asks her question, curiosity in her expression. It's obvious she wants to know what the shard is as well.

Bixby watches the events unfold with a nervous tick.

Once Lexi's demeanor changes, he relaxes somewhat.

"So the artifact--is evil?" he asks. "Should we destroy it?"

Sheila reaches out and touches Lexi on the shoulder, a calming touch, "Do not fret, I know you were not yourself." Letting go of Lexi she holds her hand open "Perhaps I should hold onto the shard. You all look a little worse for ware. Maybe everyone should get some rest tonight and we can discuss what has transpired in the morning. I want to check with my notes and ensure this is in fact what I believe it to be."

Lexi flashes a weak smile at Verris. When Bixby asks if the artifact is evil, the lass shakes her head.

"Not exactly, but it is dangerous. When Lady Heidmarch first made me a part of your party, I thought she was mad; all I could bring to the group was my knowledge...and maybe a bit of magic. I thought I'd be useless. Then, when we survived the kidnapper's trap and instead captured him, I thought maybe I could at least hold my own. But when I summoned up the courage to join Adistan in capturing Natalya, despite the danger of the fire, I finally felt like maybe I did have what it takes to be a Pathfinder. And that's how the shard ensnared me."

Lexi pauses to put her feelings and beliefs into words. "I think the shard enhanced my emotions to a dangerous level. Instead of feeling good about myself contributing to our quest, I began to get overconfident...to have too high an opinion of my own worth, powers, and abilities. The thought of working under someone else's authority--and not trusting almost wholly in my own abilities--is what made me physically sick. At least I think that's what happened."

When Lady Heidmarch holds out her hand and asks for the shard, it's obvious that Lexi doesn't want to give it up. Eventually, though, her trembling hand reaches out toward Sheila's....

If all of the curse effects are indeed gone, Lexi will reluctantly hand over the shard to the venture-captain; otherwise I guess Lexi/Gollum's back. ;)

Verris listens to Lexi's explanation with interest before commenting. "Dangerous thing, that. Hard to guard against somethin' that makes ye feel better about yerself."

She looks over to Lady Heidmarch as she suggests a rest. "Don't suppose ye've got a healer around here, Lady Heidmarch? Got myself pretty beat up in the fight tryin' to get Natalya back here. Could use a little doctorin' to help get me back into fightin' shape. Some doctorin', a rest and a bath, though not necessarily in that order," she says with a grin.

She looks over towards the visibly wounded Adistan and adds, "I think Mister Temmer could use some doctorin' too, though he was better at not gettin' shot and stabbed than I was."

Bixby feels happy about Lady Heidmarch's suggestion that they rest. Though he hadn't been injured in the battles, having his companions at full strength would be optimal.

"I need a hot bath and two days rest on account of them stirge bites. I can heal ya all in the morn... I feel the approval of Hanspur in my soul...'tis strange... these new powers moving through me now. Davor appears exalted and content despite the dark circles under his eyes due to the stirges' blood drain.

As a sort of penance for her recent bad behavior, Lexi stays up all night, changing bandages on the wounded while also softly relating tales of heroes of old from some distant land and time.

Lexi will use her Sustaining Performance trait to provide long-term care (via Perform (oratory checks) to Adistan, Verris, and Davor.

Davor wakes up the next morning and sees that all his stirge bites have closed, and that most of his arrow wounds have been cleaned, stitched and are almost completely mended!

"I don't know what ointment you used, but you're a great healer! what is this song you were singing through the night? that put me ta sleep like a baby!"
