Yes, it's real... we're showing it off to retailers at the GAMA Trade Show in Las Vegas this week.
That is the actual final cover art—but it's *not* the finished cover. It's also not really going to be called "Basic Game," and that particular title font will not be used.
Folks who attend PaizoCon will learn a lot more about it, and maybe even get to see some of what's inside...

I don't care what it's called, that is so going on my son's Christmas present list. I suspect that is going to take Pathfinder to a whole different level.

Vic, you're a tease.
Just a little bit more anxious for PaizoCon now.

This was just uploaded to facebook about 8 minutes ago.
And they say information moves fast... Gary saw another Facebook posting 90 minutes before that one!

Who knew I could buy my own designer for 35 bucks. So if I order two of them, who comes in the other box?

Just two of me... you'd be surprised how far cloning has come along these days. Its really the only way I can meet my deadlines.

(In all seriousness, I am super stoked to tell everybody more about this box.. but I gotta wait till Paizocon)

Wow. I'm very excited for this, and not just because I have an eight-year old nephew. (Alas, my daughters are a little too young.) I recently visited my folks, and brought home a crate full of all my old school goodness, including the 1981(?) Basic Set with the Earl Otus artwork and the blue expert set that followed. It warms my heart to know that there will be a new intro to the hobby for young & beginner gamers that is somewhat less intimidating than the core rule book.
FWIW, I think this is the point where you completely and officially pass those whatamacallit Wizards people.

Yeah i am pretty sure that's what he was getting it. Remember the 3.5 thrives poster and such. Pathfinder to most is and likely always well be connected to 3.5 DnD. :)

Gorbacz wrote:35 USD target price? Sweet.Interesting...I considered $30 the ceiling given the purpose of the product (obviously I don't know the contents - but I expected those to be adjusted to hit a <$30 price).
Just wait until we post the contents. This is going to be absolutely STUFFED with high-value materials. We're putting as much stuff in this box as we can without losing money.
Plus, I personally feel like a lot of these boxed sets pick their price point first and then start cutting quality contents until you have a flimsy book with no cover, cheap dice, and about 45 minutes of useful play.
We're aiming a bit higher than that, as we shall soon reveal.

I wish we could have, but we could not come up with a way to do what we believe needs to be done at that price point. Frankly, $35 is pushing it. I will tell you that when you pick up this box, the heft of it will make you feel that you're getting your money's worth, and that's before you even open it.

By the way, if you'd like to see how *deep* this box is, check out the table in the *next* photo Black Diamond Games posted.

Glad to hear it -- stuff that puppy. I personally couldn't care less whether it is $30 or $35 -- I'm just trying not to project my preferences onto everyone else. BTW, I think you're totally right about the "price first, then cut to fit" paradigm.
Either way, one of these will be under the tree for my older boy.

Wow...nice.

Also from Facebook:
"Some details: It's a full 5-level Pathfinder box set that uses the same rules in a more user friendly format. It should have a DMs book, player's book and adventure. No miniatures but standee figures ala Kill Doctor Lucky. It's $34.95."
I know that'll disappoint some (including me, to a degree) that had hoped it'd be a more streamlined "old school" type RPG. However, I'm still very interested in this product -- the "more user friendly format" could really help get my kids into it.
I know it's probably far into development but... Any reason it can't be a 6-level introduction? I'm thinking mainly because I'd love to play PFRPG E6 and that'd be a great place to start from. =)

Because adding one more level would have caused the box to burst at the seams. Seriously!

This is, unquestionably, still the Pathfinder RPG. We've made it easier to learn and to play, but you could theoretically take your character to a Pathfinder Society event and play level-appropriate scenarios alongside people who created their characters out of the Core Rulebook.

That's too bad. I was really hoping for 6 levels as well.
Oh well, nice big box anyway. This is awesome news though. There was a point of concern for me.
