From farther in the room, a chanting/spell-casting voice can be heard, apparently reading from a scroll.

Spellcraft DC 18:
The spell being read is summon monster II.

Aconite charges into the room filled with sharp implements and bites at the darkmantle, tearing it a bit, but not killing it. The eidolon manages to avoid cutting or piercing itself in the process.

Since this is surprise round, the only way to move and attack is via charge. Since you can't charge and be careful, Aconite exposed himself to the caltrop-like effect but made the die roll.

He did start the summons spell in the surprise round, and so finishes wiht his standard action this round. You can retcon starting the second spell though I don't think it will matter much. BTW, I did think that summoners can "summon" as a standard action, maybe that's the old version...this is not a summoner.

Hall of Exquisite Agony - Round 1 - concluded

Having pinpointed the location of the hiding caster, Wilem tosses a bomb at the spot, but his actions draw attacks from both the tentacled beast and the fiendish centipede. Neither attack hits the halfling, but his bomb does damage to the caster behind the barrel who seems to not be terribly affected.

Aconite steps on a caltrop on his way to attack the caster and the pain in his foot causes his attack to miss badly. He does see that the caster is another of those gremlin-like jinkin, this one holding a staff and wearing tattered black robes.

Acrobatics check doesn't help against this caltrops, unless I am missing something. Take 1 hp dmg, and halve movement speed for up to 24 hours.
