Candledark creates a rope lattice to bypass the slippery log, but it's still difficult and the party has to take its time.
Spell relevant to the task gives a +2 bonus. With Fran's Reflex check you get a 22 total. So close.
The mist patch obscures almost all vision. You can barely see your hands. The Sentinel simply closes his eyes and lets his instincts take over. Fran and Abaal help correct him and direct the rest of you to follow. You soon emerge from on the other side of the mist.
7/8 successes. You get the same reward for 7 or 8 successes, so.
GM chadius |
The chase has been long and daunting, but you finally catch up to a group of the glowing creatures. The moonlit trail leads toward the burrow in the southeast.
The armored woman lies unconscious atop a stone slab. Some of the glowing creatures remain, possibly to stall for time. You’re not sure, but that woman needs rescue.
You moved so quickly you caught them off guard and begin with a surprise round.

Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh |
Abaal does what he always does--he charges in swinging! Move, Move, Attack!
"KIDNAPPERS! NOW YOU MINUSCULE MISCREANTS FACE THE KEEN-EDGED BLADE THAT HAS SLAIN A THOUSAND SAND FLIES!"
20% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 43 +1 adamantine falchion v white (power attack, overhand chop, v flat-footed): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26 damage: 2d4 + 16 ⇒ (2, 4) + 16 = 22
Fran Belmont |
As they come charging up on the strange glowing creatures and the unconscious woman Fran wills herself to shift back in her new hybrid form, her features becoming less bestial and more human.
Shifting from Wolf to Hybrid as a Move action for the surprise round.
Kn. Nature (DC 15): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
"Lurkers in Twilight! They're fey so they hate the touch of cold iron," Fran growls. "But watch out or they'll blind you...or poison you...or both! And they can also ______ !"
Special Abilities, I guess?
Fran then moves up and begins to cast and points at Red, attempting to pin its shadow in place with her spell!
______________
Fran casts Shadow Trap on Red; DC 14 Reflex to resist~
GM chadius |
Fran looks at the Lurkers and knows they can create a shadowy cloak to counteract light spells. She also knows they can travel between areas of dim light, similar to dimension door. She also knows they can blend in twilight, giving themselves partial concealment against attacks if they fly, and total concealment if they are on the ground. She uses the fairy's love of twilight to betray himself.
Will Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
The shadow wraps around him, holding him in place.
Abaal and his sword are only vaguely concerned by this, so they slice through one of the fairies.

Dylph |
Dylph moves forward 30' drawing his shortbow as he does...he targets the white creature and fires a cold iron arrow...
Shortbow: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 7
...which misses badly...
Xanac Candledark |
Should I have even bothered with the second animate rope and Formless Body/expeditious retreat? It would save me a few power uses....
While I get why, I nonetheless heavily question whether Fey really ought to be categorized under Knowledge (Nature)...which is a skill I haven't got yet....
The bound fairy's lambent aura suddenly explodes into a dazzling blaze - one that the fairy itself doesn't seem to like!
spontaneous immolation, DC 17, vs Red Robin Goodfellow: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 1) = 3
...or...at least, it is *a bit* bothered by it.
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh |
Note: Abaal took his surprise (Move), and first round (Move some more, and Attack) actions. There wasn't a good Charge line so he didn't (otherwise he would have).
GM chadius |
@Candledark: You can keep the power uses. The way it works it takes a minute to pass each obstacle, so your spells would barely last long enough to help you.
Dylph takes aim and hits the tree with pinpoint accuracy. Not sure why he hates trees.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Candledark bothers the Red fairy, singing its wings.
The Red fairy tries to break free of its own shadow and fails.
Will Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Spellcraft (DC 17): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Fran recognizes the spell being cast on her companion and resolves to counter it...or otherwise give Abaal a helpful boost on his next falchion strike. She moves ahead again, ducking into the treeline for safety as she calls out, "Hang in there Abaal, you can do it!"
______________
Fran will move to her current position and grant Fortune to Abaal for 1 round~
Yes, just 1 round, she's still perfecting her cackling technique...
Dylph |
Dylph shakes his head and tries again, firing two cold iron arrows this time...if the first one drops white, he'll fire the second at red...

Attack vs Red or the last remaining fairy
GM chadius |
This went a lot faster than my other table...
Candledark and The Sentinel batter the fairy. Thror finally gets near enough to raise his axe and hacks the fairy like it's a little imp.
Combat Over
All that remains is the unconscious woman upon the slab. Her body is riddled with claw and knife wounds.
She’s at -1 HP.
Xanac Candledark |
Candledark offers up a crude healing wand made from an elk's antler he'd previously been gifted to those who can make proper use of it.
Dylph |
Dylph, eyeing the tree he riddled with arrows ruefully, shakes his head while moving to the injured woman on the slab. He looks her over and tries to stabilize her...
Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh |
Candledark offers up a crude healing wand made from an elk's antler he'd previously been gifted to those who can make proper use of it.
"Oh, thank you." Abaal uses one of the smaller tips to extract something from his ear and then hands it back. "Laa! La la la! Much better.
Then he produces a vial from his belt, uncorks it and pours the contents down the woman's throat.
potion of cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
GM chadius |
Abaal's potion works to revive the woman and she coughs as she wakes up. "Wh-what- who are you?" She takes a moment and then stands up.
The woman looks at the fallen fairies with a look of shame. "I tried to warn them. They turned to a dark god and aim to please her above all else. Even if that means sacrificing their old friends." She unconsciously feels her tattered cloak, wincing as she feels the holes.
”Thank you all for rescuing me. My name is Cybelle. Mairisse and I patrol the Mushfens. About a week ago, a great evil approached these lands and poisoned us, robbing our abilities.”
She looks at some of you and smiles. ”I see. Luyvire still lives, then? Are you here to help cleanse the area? I will help however I can, but-” Her arm twitches and she grunts. ”I cannot help you directly. I must return to Mairisse. Please, take this. I did not have time to use it before they attacked me.”
She hands you a satchel containing two small pouches. Each pouch is a use of dust of emulation. Also inside the satchel is a potion of fly, a ring of protection +1, a scroll that contains animal messenger, lesser restoration, and resist energy, and a wand of cure moderate wounds (CL 5th, 5 charges).
Any questions for her?
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh |
Abaal's potion works to revive the woman and she coughs as she wakes up. "Wh-what- who are you?" She takes a moment and then stands up.
Abaal steps back and puts his hands on his hips. "Why, I am Abaal, the Daring Swordsman of Katapesh!™"
The Sentinel |
"A Will-O'-Wisp haunts these lands now. From what we have heard, it is a dire threat. Is there anything you could tell us that makes this one different from a typical one?"
Sentinel wants to know just what kind of nightmare they are up against.
GM chadius |
"Tulvhatha is a will-o'-wisp, yes." Cybelle nods. "Her fell magic has corrupted the Marshfens. Mariselle trusted me to help defend this swamp, yet..." She trails off.
"The Glade of Silver Sparks guides wayward spirits to their final rest. Tulvhatha has certainly corrupted it. Some of this land reeks of undeath."
Fran Belmont |
"I think the Sentinel's asked some of the most important questions already," Fran remarks as she looks over the items given to them by Cybelle. "But is there anything else we can do to help you before you head back to Mariselle? And are there any other guardians out here that might be in trouble that we should watch for?"
______________
Fran can't make use of any of the spells on the scroll but she can hold the healing wand.
Thror Tjarkson |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"More importantly... are you REALLY sure this Tulvhatha is a will-o'-wisp and not a DEMON? Think carefully... horns? hatred for mortals? Unquestionably evil aura???" Thror asks, sounding eager...
Dibs on the potion of fly if at all possible
GM chadius |
"Horns? no. Hatred for mortals? Yes. Evil aura? I would say so." Cybelle answers Thror's questions to the best of her ability. This is one of many reasons I stuck to the marshes, zealots like him.
"You should be weary of the mist. It has a life of its own now." Cybelle responds to the others. "The spirits are trapped within it, and it feeds on your fear."
"That's about all I know. But, thank you all for your help. Mariselle and I will pray for your safety." She bows to you all and makes her way into the marshes.
Just as that resolves, a low howl echoes through the forest and into the evening wind. A moment later, it is answered by a chorus of other calls. Gleaming eyes shine from the bordering forest, as a pack of wolves begin to step forward, their haunches low and poised for attack. A deep, guttural growling resounds from within the burrow, and a moment later, a dark, canine figure emerges and snaps its jaws. Its fangs and black coat are matted with blood, and its eyes glow red.
Can any of you speak wolf? Celestial Werewolves do!
“Riverfang, can you not see they are the blessed of the Silver Dancer?” she warns. “An attack on them would bring the pack great misfortune. Surely you have not forgotten that.” The one called Riverfang snaps his head toward the wolf and growls at her. “Silence, Windcaller! With my return, I now lead this pack. Mind your words, or they may be your last.”
Windcaller raises her head and narrows her yellow eyes. “You come back to us tainted and foul! You’re a mere shadow of the leader you once were. We will not suffer under your tyranny a moment longer. I call for a Challenge of the Blood!”
Hushed murmurs pass through the rest of the pack as the wolves shift uncomfortably where they stand. “Think long and hard on this, kinsbound,” Riverfang growls to the other five wolves. “Casting such disrespect at the behest of this whelp will cost you greatly. The decision is yours. Careful what you choose.”
A single wolf runs up to you, bowing her head. She seemed to speak to the leader, but now she speaks to you directly. Hopefully you understand wolf.
”Either the pack must stand united against the leader to exile him; or the leader must be challenged to a one-on-one duel to the death.” Windcaller bows her head and closes her eyes for a moment. “If I must fight Riverfang on my own, so be it. But I know my strength does not match his. It is my hope to convince the others to stand against him and cast him out. Would you help me persuade them?”
Windcaller asks for your help in overthrowing Riverfang. You can accept or refuse. If you refuse, how will you leave?
If you accept to help, you can attack Riverfang as a group or nominate one of you to challenge him in a 1 on 1 battle. Alternatively, you may try to convince the others to stand united with skill checks.
The Sentinel |
Sentinel is easily offended, and doesn't really care to fight one on one. The skills available to me are also rather lack-luster, so I vote group fight. Clearly we have our combat capabilities very well matched if we all fight alongside each other.
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh |
Can any of you speak wolf? Celestial Werewolves do!
Just rub it in why don't you. ;)
"What is it Sentinel? Has Billy fallen down a well again? Speak lad!" Abaal says encouraging his companion.
Thror Tjarkson |
"Ah! The mangy mutt dares to bare his fangs to his betters! You, Windcaller... get into line! Seems to me Riverfang challenged us first! And I for one I'm glad to send him back to his grave! Then the demon resposnible for raising him will join him in DEATH!" Thror snarls in the wolf tongue...
If there's a challange Thror is glad to take it, unless the party decides to try persuading the other wolves... which is something Thror should not try to do given his own proclivities and abysmal charisma
The Sentinel |
"Pathetic mongrel." Sentinel raises his hand and from his goblet spurts the crimson ectoplasmic energy. He looks to Thror. "If you do not kill him, I will."
Sentinel is pushing entirely for resolving this with bloodshed.
