Triloteya dodged away from Talc's blow, but took Jena's return fire in the side. She grunted in pain, then stiffened as Skrivixx 's spell washed over her mind. Moments later, though, she was free of the Shirren's spell and used the confusion to cover the fact that she was once more aimed at Jena. The android felt another punch in her gut as she was shot again, this time blood flowed as her armor failed.

In the ballroom, the crowd began to panic as the gunfire rang out. Despite many of them being Starfinders or former Starfinders, most were without weapons, and there were many civilians and dignitaries among the lot.

Fearing that there isn't enough time to take the assassin down before she triggers the bombs, Talc moves into flanking position and swings his baton upwards under her wrist holding the trigger devices. Hopefully she will release it and the upward momentum will send it into the air where he can snatch it from her.

Skrivix steps up in the exit door of the room behind Jena, gently touching Jena's back next to her gaping exit wound. Drawing his claws in a circle around the bloody mess he calmly states, "today is not your day, droidfriend." A few unintelligible, to his compatriots, clicks and clacks later and the wounds begin to knit and heal. The clink! of the last bullet dropping from Jena's midsection to the floor punctuates his efforts and he pulls his hand back to his side.

Rei saw the last bomb and cursed to herself. It was centered underneath the stage, very near the speaker's podium where Luwazi would have been standing to give her speech if everything had gone smoothly this evening. Harrac hit his target a second time, and this time the hard plastic casing came apart in a shower of plastic fragments and circuitry. He turned to give Rei a toothy grin and saw that the crowd was backed up against the far wall where the exits were, but no one was leaving.

Radaszam pushed his bulk through the crowd and fiddled with his communicator. He said, "Some kind of permaseal resin in the doors. can't get them open short of heavy equipment. I called it in, but my Spiders will take a few minutes to find a cutting torch or artillery laser to do the job. none of you have anything like that on hand do you?"

Meanwhile, in the AV booth, the assassin was giving talc and Jena trouble. Jena's wounds were throwing her off her game, though Skrivixx was able to heal some of them. talc came in low with his baton, trying to smash the bomb remote out of Triloteya's hand. He manage the tack, hitting her in the nerve plexus at the wrist. Everyone seemed to hold their breath as the remote bounced under a nearby console. The assassin glared at Talc , then thrust her gun in his direction. Expecting her to try and finish off Jena, Talc was caught off guard, but managed to twist to the side as the assassin fired, saving himself from a nasty injury.

Skrivix watches Talc beating the assassin about her body. Quelling the voices in his head that protest the violence, he muses aloud, "sometimes we have to hurt one to protect the many. Today is such a day."

Skrivix makes a circular gesture in the direction of Triloteya, followed by a small shudder-like movement of his body ending with a quick and almost imperceptible thrust of his hips.

Talc slammed his baton into the assassin, throwing off Jena's aim. As the android swore and complained about quitting this line of work, Skrivixx concentrated, then threw a mental blast at Triloteya's mind. The assassin staggered a bit, but then shook her head clear. It was clear that she had been affected, but not nearly as much as the mystic had hoped. The assassin seemed to lunge for the remote, and Talc moved to stop her, only to have Triloteya step smoothly to the side and shoot him point blank in the stomach. Still, he managed to lash out with his baton, cracking it into her left shin and severely crippling her movement.

At the stage, Harrac and Rei worked furiously to disarm the bombs. Harrac smashed the other one on his side of the stage open with a mighty blow. Rei cast a spell to supercharge her weapon, hoping that the buzzing energy wouldn't set off the bomb. Closing her eyes, she slammed the knife down...handily severing the control mechanisms without setting off the bomb!

Jena, Skrivixx, and Talc harried Triloteya, and though no one managed to injure her, they did succeed in driving her away from the remote. Finally, with one last look about, she set her face into a hard mask and fired at Talc once more, aiming for his stomach. The already weakened and torn armor failed to even slow the shot, and Talc collapsed to the floor of the A/V booth, blood pouring from the hole in his abdomen. Triloteya spun and ran for the far door.

In the ballroom, the panic was in full force now, even as Harrac and Rei tried to disarm the fourth bomb. Rei finally used her datapad to identify the arming circuit, and with Harrac's help managed to disarm that one. That only left the bomb under the center of the stage...a place that was going to be very hard to get into.

Talc lunges up from the floor, following the assassin, who was already halfway down the hall. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't outrun an 8 mm slug fired from an auto-pistol. The shot took her between the shoulder blades and she sprawled out on the floor of the hallway. In a few moments, her form began to change from that of a dusky-skinned human female to a scaly, reptilian appearance. The curly hair turned out to be a well-styled wig.

The immediate danger from the assassin was over, but there was still one bomb to defuse. Seeing what Rei and Harrac were doing, the centipede-like Ykris walked his half-elf host over to you and said "I believe I can assist here." Detaching itself from the half-elf, the creature skittered under the stage area, sliding through the nest of struts and cabling with ease. In moments the bomb's RF signature disappeared from Rei's screen, and Ykris crawled back out from under the stage. Presently, he said "There. I disconnected the arming wiring using the diagram Radaszam had. Quite simple, actually. It was the duraplast housing that was giving you the trouble, yes?"

When Talc commed in to say that the assassin was dead, Radaszam breathed a sigh of relief. Using his bellowing voice, he managed to calm the crowd, then waited for his Obsidian Spiders to bring the cutting torches necessary for evacuation. He approached you once you were all back in the ballroom.

"Great job on taking down that assassin and disarming those bombs. I'll admit that the threat was a little more serious than I thought. Who would have thought that the assassin Triloteya would turn out to be a reptiloid shapechanger? Still, you did a great job, and I'll make sure you are rewarded."

Luwazi stood in the center of the ballroom and called for everyone's attention, interrupting Radaszam. "Ladies and Gentlemen, please, may I have your attention! It seems that tonight was an attempt on my life, an assassin who thought to silence me before I could get my message out. That must mean that it is a message all the more worth hearing."

"I had planned for this evening’s announcement to be an exciting one, but I’ll admit this is not quite what I had in mind," the First Seeker begins, her smile wry but determined. "“Now I find my resolve only further galvanized."

"As many of you know, the First Seeker has the privilege and the responsibility for choosing the direction of the Starfinder Society’s research efforts. I have refrained from setting such a direction while we regroup and rebuild—an undertaking which all of you here have made possible. Also, the fact that Guidance has not yet chosen to formalize my election is another matter, but not one the Society can risk dwelling on. Now that the Society is again in a position to reach for the stars, I am pleased to formally announce the focus of our efforts during my tenure. Thanks to the tireless research of my associate Royo, we have identified a lead on understanding the Scoured Stars incident. And so, the Starfinder Society will continue researching the Scoured
Stars, in the hopes of reuniting with our lost colleagues and better understanding this phenomenon."

The First Seeker waved an arm in your direction. "And I already have highly qualified agents in mind to undertake the first mission!"

There is a moment of surprised quiet over the room, and then the guests, starting with Ykris, begin to applaud in force. Iteration-177 regards the elected First Seeker with an indiscernible expression, slowly joining in on the applause. Royo nods enthusiastically, taking in some of the fanfare for his role in the announcement. Naiaj frantically appends work orders, noticeably perturbed by some news she has just received. Zo! actively backs away from the assembled group, still enthusiastically clapping but also making desperate calls to acquire televised rights to all Scoured Stars related endeavors.
