Uh oh, I thought you'd moved on from the druid idea, and I was helping to fill a niche with my Ranger. I hope it's alright for us to have 2 melee & wilderness skill characters.

I'll be pet-free, not much of a caster, and decent with a bow or a sword. I can also cover a number of knowledge skills, since I don't think we'll have a knowledge specialist. I'll invest at least in Nature, Planes, and Religion, and perhaps a point in Arcana and and Dungeoneering. My Expert level can meet those all class skills. That said, my INT is 12 and not likely to get higher, so I'll never be great at them.

(It occurs to me that k planes will be especially useful in this campaign since most of not all humanoids in this world are actually native outsiders.)

CDL, what are you thinking for your Oracle?

Also...

^^

In case y'all missed this in the back and forth.

I would like background skills. They've basically become the default option in my Online Tabletop group, and they have been a welcomed addition to Rise. Fun fact: ever since I created her in 2014 (!), Jeevika has always been a dancer. Thanks to background skills, she has a +18 to Perform: Dance.

...I gotta have Jeeves dance sometime. I did have her sing once, which was only possible thanks to background skills.

As for my Oracle, expect a melee warrior of some sort. A spontaneous version of Jeevika would be a good frame of reference.

I too like background skills.

However, we now have four melee characters. If everyone else is settled, I can easily alter my concept. No biggie.

Alright, let's go ahead an do background skills then.

I actually rolled up a DMPC last night who is warrior caste. I was originally thinking of running a group of 5 anyway. He's also a melee character, mainly warpriest.

No one is going to play a kineticist in bender world? Sad :(

Liberty's Edge

are you full?

Yeah, private recruitment. Sorry, Qstor.

RE: Pre-game relationships: If anyone comes from the same nation, feel free to establish some manner of ties before the game starts.

My GMPC is a Suli from Terra (the Earth nation). I'm going to be lazy and just give them basic names Vita = life, Terra = Earth, Aquaria = Water, Igna = Fire, Aura = Air.

Any other terrans out there?

Darius is a Narinar from Vita.

And thinking on it (and chatted with Jelani some), I kinda like an all melee group. We all are different thematically. Gyr is switch hitter and can use a bow too. I can pick up a bow if need be on occasion too. Should be fun!

I had been kind of hoping for being the lone wilderness expert (which would explain why my character has been brought in to the expedition) but I guess some measure of redundancy is preferred.

I think I might take another look at the bender -- I mean kineticist -- but I'm not strongly feeling it.

HP: 63/63; AC 22, touch 13, flat-footed 19; Fort +9, Ref +6, Will +9 Elemental Assault 4/6; Blessings 4/4; Fervor 4/6; Sacred Weapon 4/4

Here is what I worked up as a DMPC. He is a relative of the Grand Custodian (the Baron who runs Apollonia). He's from the old country (Terra for them). He'll be assigned to the unit because his grand uncle doesn't want him underfoot anymore, and to keep an eye on you all, AND if he manages to not die and do something awesome all the better for his uncle.

As for being a wilderness 'expert', I have a feeling all of us are going to have at least some ranks in survival. That's not a bad thing in my book.

95% of this campaign is going to take place in the wild or in ruins. If we only have one character who is wilderness capable things might get hairy at some point.

5d100 ⇒ (61, 32, 22, 45, 21) = 181

Stalwart, I'm looking at kineticist again too. I think it's likely I'll stick with my Ranger--I can really picture her already--but this *does* seem like the game to try a bender out in, if I'm gonna some day.

If I suddenly switch to full in on the bender, I'll post here. Please do the same! (Otherwise, if the way this thread has gone so far is any indication, you and I will both abandon our wilderness characters and fall in love with benders at the exact same time!) :-/

BTW, Jelani said he'll let Slyph / Undine / Oread Element Affinity include "Sylph kineticists with treat their Constitution score as 2 points higher for all air elemental focus abilities." ...and the same, swapping elements, for the other two, if that makes a diff for ya.

OK, I think kineticists seem interesting, and I appreciate Jelani giving the elemental races an extra bonus in their element...and maybe I'll try'm again some day, but I'm excited about my Ranger. I'll try to have a build for her before too long.

Stalwart, if the build you're most excited about is a druid, you should go for it too. The jungle seems like a fine place for two survival experts!

And I’ll be having a few Ranks in Survival too. I agree all of us having at least a bit of skill in it is smart and very thematic.

I think I've had an epiphany. I'm going to go kineticist. Details will follow.

Cool! Either way I think works for the game, but I'm intrigued to see what you build.

BTW, I will be on Abs roll20 on and off today.

Hey, Jelani,

Based on our discussion (and my character's origin) do I have to go with the racial trait you listed in your rules post?

Do you mean their national/regional trait, because you want them to be from the Grave? I guess I should have made one for being from the Grave too, I forgot to do that originally.

If that is indeed what you're referring to, I'll have to pick a regional trait for people from the Grave. I will look at them and think about which one would be appropriate. I'm open to suggestions in the meantime.

Here's the start of the character

Indroval Ignatius was the general/commander/governor tasked with pacifying the natives of the Grave. Being a powerful pyrokineticist, his tactics involved burning down huge swathes of jungle that included innocent villages. After a brutal campaign, he succeeded.

A vicious man in every respect, he would frequently have his way with native women displaced from the villages he burned to the ground. Ilistra was the resultant pregnancy of one of those 'conquests.' Ilistra's mother was one of the few who escaped deeper into the jungles where she bore her bastard child.

Ilistra lived for a time in one of the few hidden villages staying a safe distance away from the established colony and the fortress, until her pyrokinetic powers began to manifest in adolescence. After a number of fires accidentally started by her powers that nearly burned down several structures, the native villagers decided to banish her back to the Colony.

Indroval Ignatius was firmly in charge of the colony. He refused to acknowledge Ilistra, though she had a strong resemblance to him. He did allow her to work in the hot kitchens of the garrison as one of the servants in a strange fit of magnanimity.

When the adventure begins, that's where Ilistra will be found, toiling in the ovens, feeding the garrison.

Sure, people from the Grave all have to be on their guard and have experience in the jungle.

Cool.

What are the languages of the people of the Grave? Would it be too odd to know the Serpentfolk tongue? Would any of the natives use it?

Stal - That post above was ninja'd by yours. I like the background. That being said, it doesn't really make sense without some modification. The colony has been around for 100 years+/-. It's not some recently conquered thing that a general is in charge of. The person in charge of Apollonia currently is Baron Utilinus, the Grand Custodian.

There is a general named Rotilius Havelar who might work as your father. He will be playing a major NPC role throughout much of the campaign. "A general of the Apollonian Guard....[Havelar is] a loyal supporter of Baron Utilinus. General Havelar is a stereotypical arrogant colonial, with traditionalist views of the Suli natives. He is a military man through and through, a skilled warrior and canny strategist, but he lacks true leadership ability."

He's not a powerful pyrokineticist, but he could be an ifrit pyromaniac. Does that work for you? I actually think it's cooler in a way, because then you can upstage him later by being the actual source of the fire where he has to douse everything in oil and use torches or whatever. He'll be so jealous.

The language of the native suli tribespeople is Polygot. The serpentspawn speak Draconic, but you wouldn't have any way of learning Draconic without a prisoner of war element to your backstory or something else like that. In Apollonia itself official business is conducted in Narinar (Common), though it is effectively a bi-lingual society with Polygot. Polygot itself is a weird pastiche of all the other five languages. It evolved separately on the Grave after the War of the Gods when survivors of all five races abandoned there melded together into what became the suli tribes of the modern day.

Yeah, I figured there'd be a few adjustments to make it all fit.

Rotilius Havelar sounds good -- making him Ifrit and just a pyro rather than a pyrokinetic works for me. I figure that there's still a tenuous peace between the natives and the colony -- the colony would need to expand every so often and would need to claim more of the jungle for wood and for cropland. Perhaps there was a period of a few years where there was a lot of conflict between the colony and the natives -- maybe even a native leader that united the tribes in a big offensive to push the colonists out.

So it makes sense that a bit of the ol' slash and burn was necessary, but Havelar made it into a lifestyle. Maybe he was a captain or a lieutenant in those days of conflict, taking troops into the jungle to deal with the natives that didn't like to be displaced or objected to huge swathes of forest being cut down for building materials. He'd frequently burn down the villages, and then burn down the jungles where the natives would flee.

But eventually he was elevated to general, so maybe that's happening less now.

Now, the question is, should I go with Ilistra Havelar, or should I stick with Ilistra Ignatius?

Well, Havelar would indicate legitimacy wouldn't it? I think having a name like Snow for Jon Snow in Game of Thrones would make more sense. So yeah, Ignatius is fine. Maybe that's what all ifrit bastards are called.

I think "Ignatius" is a little too regal-sounding for an illegitimate child. I think names like Ash, Ember, Cinder, or Coal would be more appropriate, don't you?

Maybe Havelar earned a nickname or a fire-themed title for his deeds during the campaign, and she takes on a derivative of that? Any thoughts?

It sounds regal to us because we don't speak vulgar latin or a derivative thereof. So latiny words sound ancient and imperial to our English ears. In this world, the two suggestions are probably the same thing. Or rather, a name like Ash would probably actually be Ignatius or something similar when spoken aloud by your character, whatever word we end up using for ourselves in English. In other words, it's up to you.

I would like you to come up with the equivalent of Snow, since you're playing a bastard. When you do something in this world that I haven't defined yet, I want you guys to participate in world building. So yeah, you pick.

Depending on how "uppity" she is, she might have assumed a new name (or be trying to).

If she's really ballsy she could try calling herself a Havelar...though depending on the legal system there, that might be a capital offense.

At any rate, the military might call her Ash (or whatnot) while she bristles and either claims her father's name, or some few fancy name of her own choosing.

Gyr, yes she's going to be a bit... uppity (fiery?).

I'm going to think on that.

Oh, can I say how pissed off I am that Paizo doesn't have an Ifrit avatar image? What's up with that?

They have Efreeti ones I believe. At least one.

But yeah, for the size of company they are and the amount of art they have commissioned for their products the dearth of avatars is a bit depressing. I feel like they should have a thumbnail of the face of every single piece of art they commission.

Alright, Cica Sabuleum is done and ready for review!

Crunch is in profile (with an attached sheet for gear, which is 80% done)

Background
Cica’s mother, Milla, is a bowyer and weaponsmith. Her father, Feldspar, is a scholar, a dabbler, and forester.

While Milla made a decent living for the family creating fine bows and melee weapons to sell to officers and the aristocracy, their big break came when Feldspar got a tip for the location of a small grove of Gaviv trees, deep in the Southern jungles of Terra.

When Cica was still riding on her parents’ backs, they took the leap and established a small, mobile camp in the jungle, with Feldspar hunting for Gaviv trees and Milla crafting it into exceptional bows for the wealthy elite.

As she grew, Cica accompanied his father on trips deep into the jungle, in search of a new Gaviv stand, sometimes for weeks at a time. Then she would sit at her mother’s side and help in crafting the fine bows, as well as the swords, hammers, and other weaponry she made.

Now that Cica has come of age, she came briefly into the Capital city of Terra...and found the crowds suffocating. She’s enlisted for a tour in the Apollonian Guard, in part to get away and find new opportunity while exploring a new environment that she hopes will be more to her tastes.

Personality
- Cica comes off as a bit acerbic and blunt.
- She’s self sufficient in many ways, having grown up deep in Terra’s Southern jungles.
- She’s fairly introverted, and unsettled by large groups of people.
- She doesn't warm up to new people right away, but once she does she is exceptionally loyal.

Appearance
Cica has rather plain features, skin like sandstone, and onyx eyes. She dresses in browns and greens, and typically has as many mud and grass stains on her as military code will allow (or perhaps a bit more than that).

Question and note
1) Jelani, I imagine that she fought (or learned to avoid) some minor undead or monstrous humanoid in the jungles of Terra, while scouting for Gaviv wood with her father. Any suggestions for one or the other, to give her a better reason to have a favored enemy (which could start as either undead or monstrous humanoid)?

2) Perhaps the Sabuleum family name is recognized (based on her mother's work), at least within Terra, for their fine masterwork weapons?

HP 80, AC 20 (T 13, F 18) CMD 23 | F+9 R+8 W+4 | resist acid 5 | favored terrain (jungle) | Per+11 (+2 in jungle; darkvision | Init+2 (+2 in jungle)

(Just missed edit window, but it's pronounced "SEE-ka")

I didn't notice anything odd with the crunch.

1) The most likely favored enemy for her to have based on her background is Humanoid (Reptilian). There are several races of serpenspawned humanoids that occasionally escape from the Grave and make their way to the other islands. They are very rare in civilized areas, but she may have some encountered some reptilians (such as kobolds) in the jungles. They will be a fairly frequent enemy in the AP as well.

If you'd rather do undead, just say that her family has a tradition of hunting undead or something and they taught her. Or she qualified for special training in the Guard, and was trained to kill undead. Or some other plausible reason you come up with.

2) That's fine.

Vindicus Velsurius is the son of an influential merchant lord in Vita. As part of a negotiation in an exclusivity trade agreement, his father had made commitments for Vindicus to attend the temple of Narinari for formalized training into priesthood. However, young Vindicus did not ever click with the standard teachings of the church, and was often times being disciplined for miscreant behavior and violent tendencies.

As he grew older, the church elders were relieved to see that apparently his rambunctiousness had tempered, as he began falling in with the more common practices of the priesthood. Or so it seemed. One night, a young priestess who had taken a fancy to Vindicus snuck to his bedchamber. What she found caused her to cry out in terror. Moments later, the elder priests arrived to find an unashamed Vindicus still kneeling in the floor of his room, a freshly slain stray dog laying on the floor of his room, it’s heart removed and placed in a small bowl. An in depth search of his room found a variety of trophies from other kills he had made.

He told them that Narinari spoke to him. He told them she had charged him with making room for new life of pure heart by eliminating the world of those with dark souls. He said Narinari herself selected these targets. Said they were menaces to the Circle of Life. He was warned to cease these extremist actions at once or else he would be excommunicated and banished, no matter his familial connections. He convinced them he would.

Four years later, the son of a young nobleman was found murdered in his bedchamber, his heart cut from his chest. The only witness was a young peasant girl who was found tied naked to the noble boy’s bed. She testified that the young lord had had her kidnapped and was raping her when a young man in a mask came in through the window and slit the boy’s throat before saying a morbid prayer to Narinari as he cut out his heart. Upon hearing of this the priests, not wishing to draw unwanted attention to their teachings, quietly ordered Vindicus‘ banishment. It wasn’t necessary, however, as earliert hat night a young man now calling himself Darius Rotarion boarded a ship out of the capital...

Background:

Everyone knows the story of Garland the Gallant!

Garland was born the son of humble farmers in the land of Terra. For most of his years, he lived a simple life helping his parents as a laborer on the farm and training to be hopefully become a warrior in the Emperor's noble legions. However, when he was but a young man, an EVIL Ifrit sorcerer attacked his family's farmstead. Thanks to his martial training, Garland managed to slay the wicked villain. Alas, it was at a great cost. Not only was his entire family consumed by the flames, but Garland's handsome face was horribly scarred by terrible burns...

Seeking a new life, Garland donned a lion mask and set out to find his new calling. He ventured to the distant land of Apollonia. Soon after arriving, he learned that the noble Apollonian Guard needed new blood and valiantly offered his service. With his trusty wolf companion Luna at his side, Garland the Gallant now tirelessly combats The Forces of Evil™!!!

Personality:

Garland strives to be a true hero! He is charming, noble, selfless, brave, loyal, trustworthy, dependable, kind, honorable, patient, reasonable, charismatic, affable, courteous, pleasant, clever, diligent, courageous, benevolent, heroic, and, of course, gallant!

Appearance:

A dashing man of Narinar ancestry, Garland is a towering, muscular individual with a powerful build. His hair and eyes are obsidian black, and what few glances can be caught of his skin indicate that he has the classic Narinar tan. He wears the traditional uniform of the Apollonian Guard with a hood and a customized lion mask. Beneath his lion mask, Garland wears additionally coverings and protection to keep his horrible burns concealed. Many in the Apollonian Guard have seen the terrible wounds and vouch for their existence, so Garland does not show his face at all these days.

Well, since everyone's doing it...

Roughly eighteen years ago, on the Grave of the Serpent, a native warlord united numerous tribes together to drive off the colonists. It was a bloody period of vicious fighting, with atrocities committed by both sides.

A young field commander named Rotilius Havelar was given a command during this conflict, frequently taking troops into the jungle on sorties to retaliate for the hit-and-fade tactics of the natives. As an Ifrit, he had an affinity with fire and frequently burned down huge swathes of the jungle and put many villages to the torch.

Havelar's troops would occasionally occupy a few of the larger villages during lengthy campaigns and effectively enslave the women and children of the villages during the occupation. One of Havelar's native servants caught his fancy, and he kept her with him for several months. Havelar was faced with a dilemma when it became obvious she was pregnant. Though it pained him, since he began to have genuine feelings for the girl, he ultimately decided to leave her behind when it became time for him to withdraw his forces back to Apollonia rather than deal with a bastard child in the colony.

The death of the tribal warlord signified the end of the fighting, and a tenuous peace developed between the natives and the colonists. For his service and the ultimate success at quelling the native revolution, Havelar was named general and given control of the entire defense force at the garrison of Apollonia.

The native woman that Havelar fancied, Ikala, gave birth to a girl that showed the Ifrit parentage of her father. She named her Ilistra, meaning "shining bright" in the Ignan tongue that she was taught by Havelar. As she raised Ilistra, she instructed her in both the Polyglot tongue of the People of the Grave, as well as the language of the colonists.

Ilistra grew up among the natives, even though she was not truly accepted as one of them. Her father was notorious, and it wasn't a secret that she was the daughter of the Demon with the Torch. It was a harsh childhood, with only her mother truly loving her.

That all changed when her pyrokinetic powers began to manifest in adolescence. After a number of fires accidentally started by her powers that burned down several structures, the natives decided to banish her. Ikala brought her out of the village and through the jungle back to Apollonia.

Ikala presented Ilistra before General Havelar and demanded he acknowledge her as his daughter. However, given his new station and the dishonor his indiscretion brought upon him, he rebuffed her and sent Ikala away. However, in a strange fit of maganimity, he did allow her to work in the hot kitchens of the garrison as a servant.

Ilistra had nowhere else to go, so really had no choice. Whatever hope that she would get special treatment because her father was the general of the garrison was thoroughly dashed. What's more, Havelar seemed to especially disdain her for her pyrokinesis.

In the kitchens, she was treated as even below the other servants for being a native half-breed bastard. They called her Ilistra Ash, after the common name for bastards of Igna. However, Ilistra adopts the Ignan word for Ash, Ignatius.

In the kitchens of the garrison, she is given the worst jobs and is forced to endure the attentions of the soldiers who see her as less than a person for being half-native and not a citizen. She's been assaulted on several occasions, able to fight off the unwanted advances by her body's ability to become burning hot. That, however, doesn't help so much against Sulis and other Ifrits.

Personality
-Bitter, volatile, damaged
-Guarded, rather standoffish
-She doesn't have much else to lose, since she is literally at the lowest rung of the social casts. Not even a citizen, she can't even join the military to elevate herself. Therefore, she does have a streak of a 'devil-may-care' attitude.

Appearance
Ilistra has the dusky skin of Ifrit, though with more of a brown tint due to her native parentage. She is thin and lithe. She could be strikingly attractive by Ifrit standards, but she effects a native dress and hair style with piercings, tattoos and native jewelry.

- I was surprised by his curse. Reading that (awesome) backstory, I expected either Blackened or Wasting (reskinned as burnt/scarred for the same effect). Or even dual-cursed, to pick both. How'd you choose Legalistic?
- A childhood of farm labor sounds like his NPC level would be Commoner. Where does Aristocrat fit in?

@Jelani: Do spells that normally target humanoids (e.g. Charm/Dominate Person) work on Sulis, Undines, Ifits, Oreads, Sylphs, and Narinars in this world? In a campaign like Rise or Absalom, they would only work on humanoids; Sulis, Undines, Ifits, Oreads, Sylphs, and Narinars are native outsiders, so the spells couldn't target them.

I'm going to say, yes, spells that are normally humanoid only also work on native outsiders in this campaign world.

Hehehehe.

Been reading Avatar graphic novels to my daughter over vacation. Now I want an all bender (kineticist) gestalt game. ;-)

Dunno if everyone would be Kineticist/Monk, or just Kineticist/something...

EDIT: though, to be clear, that doesn't make me any less excited about THIS game...and with Legacy starting soon I doubt I could add another so really just dreaming...
