Taman Hornraven |
Taman, that was your first attack - you can move if you want.
Taman moves toward elemental, he slips on the grease and falls.
acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
GM Hawthwile |
Taman hasn't fallen yet - with a Reflex 15 save he could remain on his feet (though unable to move through the grease).

Fendel, CSI: Absalom |
The detective hops of the table, studying the creature. He tries a different tactic. "Смелый камень, тебе не нужно драться со мной. Или любой из нас. То, что вызвало вас, больше не приказывает вам. Если волшебство заставляет вас оставаться на этом самолете, ему не нужно заниматься насилием. Вы можете проскользнуть в эту тюрьму из готового камня. Я могу себе представить, что земля порезать таким образом должна быть болезненной. Зачем подвергать себя этому дальше. Отправляйтесь на юг и продолжайте невредимым."
"Bold Stone, you need not fight me. Or any of us. That which summoned you no longer commands you. If the magic compels you to stay on this plane, it not need be an exercise in violence. You are free to slip this prison of finished stone. I can imagine to see earth cut this way must be painful. Why subject yourself to this any further. Move away to the south and go unharmed."
5' Step and studied Target on the elemental. I know I can't diplomacize with him, but with the caster down, he may opt to leave. It never hurts to check. Besides, I learned all these languages in school, may as well get some use out of them.
Glasha Rogmesh |
Glasha stares at the elemental, then moves around to the other side of it to flank with Seelah. (This would provoke an AOO; if hit, Glasha will discharge the vampiric touch in her spell-storing armor.) She then attacks with her heavy flail.
+2 merciful adamantine heavy flail, flanking, divine favor, PA, FF: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 12 + 2 + 2 - 2 + 2 = 32nonlethal damage, PA: 1d10 + 9 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 6 = 16intimidate: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (18) + 24 = 42 (if the attack is successful it is shaken for a number of rounds equal to the damage dealt)
Thoriel Liltamael |
Momentarily reeling from the heavy blow, Thoriel spins and returns back through the room as quick as she came, gracefully stepping through the grease as she does so.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26
As she does so, she mutters some words in elvish and tries to hamper the elemental a little.
Slow (DC17) on the elemental
GM Hawthwile |
The elemental does not seem interested in what Fendel has to say as it lashes out at Glasha as she moves...
Slam, Earth mastery, Power attack vs DC 16: 1d20 + 14 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (9) + 14 + 1 - 3 = 21
Bludgeoning damage, Earth mastery, Power attack: 2d6 + 7 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 7 + 1 + 6 = 21
...and connects. As the spell stored in Glasha's armor triggers, the creature roars with a sound like a rockfall. Glasha's strike connects, and even though she felt like some of her damage was negated, both her intimidating presence and stare seem to unnerve the elemental. It tries to resist Thoriel's spell...
Will, Hypnotic Stare, Shaken vs DC 17: 1d20 + 6 - 3 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 3 - 2 = 14
...but it fails, and the rocky creature suddenly begins moving as if through molasses. Angry, it lashes out at the half-orc staring at it...
Slam, Earth mastery, Power attack, Shaken, Slow vs DC 16: 1d20 + 14 + 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 14 + 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 = 22
Bludgeoning damage, Earth mastery, Power attack: 2d6 + 7 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 7 + 1 + 6 = 22
...and wallops her soundly.
Glasha, I don't think you were flanking from that position since both Seelah and Thoriel were on the corners of the creature, not that it matters - that's plenty enough to hit its AC. Also, it looks like you might not have included the damage from divine favor and merciful. Go ahead and let me know how much those would be in your next post.

Glasha moves to flank with Seelah then makes a mean face as she casts doom on the elemental!
No AOO because it’s slowed; if it fails the DC 16 WILL save, including penalties for shaken and hypnotic stare, it is frightened!
Seelah by Zin |
Seelah makes eye contact with the half-orc, and coordinates her movements so that she strikes while the elemental is focused on the threat from Glasha. Seelah again strikes hard and quick with two powerful jabs. Even if all of this damage doesn't get through, some of it will!

EDIT: Sorry! Shardra does not have fortune! *facepalm*. :-(
Shardra hexes the elemental to receive an evil eye!
Will DC 18 for AC -2. No move action.
Glasha Rogmesh |
It has come to my attention that slowed/staggered does not prevent taking AOO's, so Glasha would have cast defensively, using a move action to center herself and negate the -10 for psychic magic (since she only took a 5' step into flanking).
concentration: cast defensively DC 17: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24
GM Hawthwile |
Taman, strangely enough you only have to make the check if you want to move through the grease. That being said, your Acrobatics check was sufficient and you can move through. Yay!
Glasha, nice catch on the concentration.
Shardra, remember that you still have a move action (and that Fortune can be extended via Cackle...).
As Taman and Seelah wail on it, the elemental tries to resist Glasha's DOOM!!!...
Will, Hypnotic stare, Shaken vs DC 16: 1d20 + 6 - 3 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 - 3 - 2 = 8

As Fendel's arrow strikes, the elemental vanishes.
Out of combat! Go ahead and heal up if desired.
Searching the bodies of the unconscious agents reveals the following:
- 2 potions of cure moderate wounds
- potion of invisibility
- potion of fly
- scroll of fireball
- cloak of resistance +1
- 2 +1 leather armors
- +2 split mail
- +1 greatsword
- masterwork composite longbow (Str +4) with 20 arrows
Given how many spellcasters we have, I'm not going to make you roll to identify things as common as this - only rare things with significant DCs.
Having foiled the Aspis agents here, the Pathfinders have time to examine the prison before relocating the remaining prisoners. In what looks to be the warden's office, Fendel easily discovers a removable floor tile. Behind it is stashed a leather satchel containing two letters and coins.
The first letter is addressed to the prison warden and references an agreement between one Kitio Aspenthi of the Korholm Agenda and Prince Zinlo of Aspenthar. It informs the warden that she is to surrender oversight of the prison to Agenda contractors during the Sun Orchid Festival, and includes 750 gp as compensation for her silence and cooperation. A quick inspection of the coins reveals that only 200 gp remain.
The second letter is merely marked as "From K". (See Handouts)
Having secured the prison, the Pathfinders are free to head to the ruins outside the city. I'm going to give everyone a chance to heal and do anything else they might want before moving y'all there - this scenario is a bit railroad-y.
What do you do?

Taman Hornraven |
"Thank you Shardra!"
Thoriel Liltamael |
"Yes, thanks sweetie. I feel so much better now!" Thoriel examines her weapon for any signs of damage after its run in with the elemental.
Seelah by Zin |
Seelah nods her thanks. "I appreciate that, Shardra. Iomedae's blessing to you."
She examines the found notes with interest. "Well, it seems my concerns about fighting innocent guards were unfounded. Thank you all for taking care to be sure of that, regardless."
Seelah has a wand of cure moderate with 38 charges; I don't think we'll run out of healing this adventure. Seelah doesn't really see much in the loot that would help her, so I don't think she'll make any claims from that.
Ready to move on!
Glasha Rogmesh |
Looks like average healing on a CMW wand would be 12. So assuming averages are allowed outside of combat, Glasha would gratefully use 3 charges from Seelah's wand to get topped off. Just saw Shardra's channel; thank you! Glasha also re-casts Vampiric Touch into her spell-storing armor. Regarding tricks, looks like 3 is the max Glasha can have implanted at any one time. Fendel and Taman used their mesmeric mirror and Seelah used her compel alacrity, so that leaves Shardra with compel alacrity and Thoriel and Glasha with mask misery. I'll leave it at that for now. Regarding the found magic items: Glasha would happily use any of the potions. She could UMD the scroll of fireball, but the save DC on scrolls is so low that it's not a super great use of actions, although free damage is free damage...
Glasha thanks Shardra for the healing. She glances at the note but it is obvious to all that she's trying with some difficulty to sound out each word as she tries to read, then just gives up after a few moments (Glasha's not very intelligent).
Ready to head to the ruins
Shardra - Iconic Shaman |
Shardra searches the area thoroughly.
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Fendel, CSI: Absalom |
"How appropriate these men are at a prison. Makes it much easier to secure them." The detective assists Shardra with the newest inmates. He takes care to search them for items that could be used to assist in an escape.
Perception: 1d20 + 35 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 35 + (5) = 46
The invisibility or flight potion may be handy to have.
GM Hawthwile |
The only thing to find was the secret floor stash, which was behind a Perception DC 25 check. If Fendel will automatically notice something, I won't bother hiding it from the party - unless there's not enough time for him to point it out or retrieve it himself - to keep things moving along.
A few miles outside of town, the Pathfinders find the ruins the venture-captain spoke of. As they approach, they see about a hundred worshipers gathered amongst the stone pillars and collapsed walls, kneeling and standing as a priestess purposefully steps about the ruin while anointing the stones and leading the attendees in prayer. She finishes a path around the ruin as the Pathfinders come near and walks to a raised platform with an altar. Pulling out a small hand bell, the priestess rings it.
With a sudden gust of foul wind, a large creature bristling with spiny ridges, coral horns, and needle-sharp teeth appears! As the people in the crowd scream, faint, run, and pray, the beast roars, "Pashaw! Pashaw!"
And we're right back into initiative!
Thoriel: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Shardra: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

Fendel: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Seelah: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20
Lyheri: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Div: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Thoriel recognizes this as a div, but isn't sure what kind.
Shardra recognizes this as a ghawwas div, a despoiler of waters and fearsome foe! She remembers tales of sailors fighting it with sword and bow, for sometimes the beast shrugged off spells as if they didn't even effect it - but those that got too close had to beware the creature's poisonous spear and tail stinger!
Fendel identifies this variety of div as a ghawwas, an aquatic predator. In addition to being immune to fire and poison, ghawwas resist acid and electricity damage and can shrug off part of an attack's damage if the weapon causing it is not both cold iron and good-aligned. He also sees that the creature's rough hide would probably damage anyone who struck it with a natural or unarmed attack. Finally, he knows that they have a variety of spell-like abilities such as control water, dimension door, and stinking cloud.
In addition to the div and priestess, there are a large number of innocent bystanders caught up in the middle of this conflict. They will not move on their own, but once per round a PC can either:
- use Diplomacy as a full-round action
- use Intimidate as a free action
Use of either will move the crowd up to 30 ft at the end of the round. Use arrows to indicate where you want the crowd to move should you try to direct it.

No problem on the Perception checks. I know some GM's want players to state when they are looking for a specific thing. Didn't want to assume anything.
Fendel shares what he knows about the div as he dumps the contents of a flask on to some of his arrows. Oil of Align Weapon on ten Cold Iron Arrows.

Seelah by Zin |
"Don't dally; get out of here. Try to get behind us; go!!!" Seelah motions for the crowd to break south, to move so that the Pathfinders can position themselves between the div and the worshipers.
She turns to face the div even as she still motions the crowd to move behind her. "You!!!" she calls, pointing, "Let the power of Iomedae send you fleeing. I am her arm, and I am her sword! Leave now or never leave this place!"

Smite evil: +3 AC vs div
Thoriel Liltamael |
Thoriel, entering a spell dance before the threat of combat, rushes up to take a position near the front line, helping encourage the civilians to get to safety.
"Don't worry, we've got this. Run and don't look back!"
Diplomacy on blue to go in the direction indicated by the group: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
GM Hawthwile |
Seelah, they move separately. Sorry, I should have made that clearer. Also, thank you so much for using arrows to track your movement!
Thoriel, remember that it is a full-round action to use Diplomacy to move a crowd.
Also, remember that you're a team. Use the discussion thread to come up with strategies - see the first two posts in that thread for ideas.
As the Pathfinders yell at the worshipers and move into position, the priestess cries out, "The Dawnflower's holy flames shall drive you back, fiend!" as she holds up her hand and a blade of flame forms in it.
The div laughs at her proclamation, then charges her with its spear...
Spear, Charge: 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 20 + 2 = 40
Piercing damage: 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (2, 3) + 10 = 15
...and connects! The priestess cries out in pain...
Fortitude: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Strength damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
...and can barely seem to keep herself upright, as if suddenly unable to bear the weight of her equipment.

GM Hawthwile |
Botting Thoriel and Seelah.
Thoriel moves up behind the div, while Seelah moves next to Glasha.
Both of you have only used a move action - if you would have liked to have cast a spell before moving, please include that in your next post.
The priestess falls back, obviously not in any condition to take more attacks from the div. (Withdraw)

GM Hawthwile |
Glasha, it looks like you would still be in danger of an AoO from that space according to this diagram from the CRB. You would know that you were still threatened - do you want to change your action, try to cast defensively, or deliberately provoke?

The div screams in agony as the paladin's holy blade cuts through its resistances and leaves two deep gashes in its hide (and Glasha's stare adds a bit more injury)! It glances around at the three people surrounding it, then focuses for a moment...
Concentration: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
...and disappears in another gust of foul wind - only to reappear on the other side of the crowds, where it roars in delight as the people scream in terror!
The priestess meanwhile approaches Thoriel. "Let me bless your blade with the power of the Dawnflower," she says before chanting a prayer to Sarenrae and holding up her holy symbol, which glows brightly and covers Thoriel's scimitar in holy light.
"Help me! We must save the townsfolk!" she implores the Pathfinders as she points to the div on the other side of the crowds, which mill around in a blind panic. (Even though Glasha gave them a good scare on the diagonal, they won't willingly move towards the div.)

Fendel, CSI: Absalom |
The detective spins, easily keeping track of the div in this fluid combat. He fires of a few more arrows, believing two have a chance to damage the beast.
"Use your common sense! Flee away!" It's like these sheep want to die!

Shardra - Iconic Shaman |
Shardra uses her ‘evil eye’ hex to lower its fighting defense on the Div and then starts to cackle!
DC 18 Will save or AC 2 lower
Thoriel Liltamael |
Sorry for absence last couple of days. Busy time of year heading into the holiday season. Office Xmas party, friend's major birthday celebration and weekend full of Xmas shopping. I tried to post an update yesterday but I see it now either got eaten or wasn't submitted properly in my haste while heading out the door. I'm back now and thanks for botting Thoriel the last couple of rounds.
Thoriel is also unperturbed by the div's teleportation. The agile elf also disappears out of existence for a moment, suddenly reappearing on the far side of the div, her blade shimmering with cold magic. She then launches into a series of brutal attacks on the beast.
Swift action as part of Spell Dance for 1 time use of Dimension Door to reappear next to the div. Then full round Spell Combat.
