Orzworth, Due to the giant’s reach you don’t have cover the moment you step out the square of Torgen and still provoke an AoO - see spoiler. Please tell me if you interpret the rules differently. I would gladly be wrong. ;-)
Orzworth comes from behind Torgen and moves up to the Ettin.
Nonetheless the Ettin strikes with his flail as he approaches.
Flail: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Flail damage, two-handed: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Oh no! I am sorry!! Your wonderful crit was interrupted before it could happen. :-(
Crit confirm Flail: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Crit Flail damage, two-handed: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
The Ettin’s strike is so vicious that although you believed that Orzworth would land the uppercut of the year... he is now lying on the floor in his own blood.
d20PFSRD:
Provoking an Attack of Opportunity
Two kinds of actions can provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing certain actions within a threatened square.
Moving
Moving out of a threatened square usually provokes attacks of opportunity from threatening opponents. There are two common methods of avoiding such an attack—the 5-foot step and the withdraw action.
...
Big Creatures and Cover
Any creature with a space larger than 5 feet (1 square) determines cover against melee attacks slightly differently than smaller creatures do. Such a creature can choose any square that it occupies to determine if an opponent has cover against its melee attacks. Similarly, when making a melee attack against such a creature, you can pick any of the squares it occupies to determine if it has cover against you.
Reach Weapons
Most creatures of Medium or smaller size have a reach of only 5 feet. This means that they can make melee attacks only against creatures up to 5 feet (1 square) away. However, Small and Medium creatures wielding reach weapons threaten more squares than a typical creature. In addition, most creatures larger than Medium have a natural reach of 10 feet or more.
d20PFSRD:
An attack of opportunity “interrupts” the normal flow of actions in the round. If an attack of opportunity is provoked, immediately resolve the attack of opportunity, then continue with the next character’s turn (or complete the current turn, if the attack of opportunity was provoked in the midst of a character’s turn).
”Charlemagne -> Go!“
Myrtella Sanova |
This lumberin' monstrosity has Combat Reflexes? or did the attack happen after the Ettin's first turn? OUCH!!!
GM Nowruz |
GM PDK saves the day!! ;-) Sorry guys! No combat reflexes and thus no AoO vs. Orzworth!!
Orzworth crouches low and jumps into the air hitting the Ettin’s left head so hard with an uppercut that you can see the head spitting blood and closing its eyes ... and now it is only hanging and clearly unconscious.
The other head cries out.
”YOOOOOUUUU ... I WILL KILL... SMASH YOU!!“
Myrtella Sanova |
"Nice punch Ozworth! you knocked out a giant! remind me never to piss you off!"
Orzworth |
Since the attack did hit, the ettin needs to make a Fortitude save (DC 13) or be stunned - unless it's got a thing (like for having two heads) that negates that.
Charlemagne Caligula Desiderius |
”Celestail Eagle, I choose you!” says Charlemagne as he cautiously moves forward a bit. A magnificent bird of prey with dark feathers save for those on its head, which are pure white, appears behind the ettin and promptly lays into it with beak and talon.

GM Nowruz |
The celestial eagle’s bite connects and hits the back of the Ettin who is now severely bleeding.

Ettin
The Ettin steps back from you and swings with his flail trying to hit Orzworth who wounded it’s left head beyond consciousness but Orzworth can dodge the attack.

Torgen 7th Son |
Torgen moves forward.
Let's see if your so mighty with a axe in your thigh!
He swings the axe, then the hammer in mighty blows...
Hammer: 1d20 ⇒ 8

But his aim... leaves much to be desired.
Orzworth |
Orzworth follows the giant, preventing it from getting at his allies. His fist flies again, and a kick follows.

Orzworth takes a 5 ft step, then uses Flurry of Blows to attack twice.

The extraplanar copy of an eagle again lays into the ettin.

Charlemagne delays until further notice
GM Nowruz |
Clinging to the foul skin of the Ettin you find a beautiful, glittering golden pendant in the shape of dragon's head which was smeared with blood. You can easily search the rest of the cavern, finding nothing but filth.
The markings which were cut into the skin of the Ettin are diabolic runes which could be used to protect giants from draconic beings with the right focus. And the amulet could serve as exactly that focus. Essentially, you assume that Aureliax would not have been able to protect the town as it would not have been able to harm this Ettin.
The woman that the Ettin dropped is probably Gilda Korgren, the mother of the Tiefling, and she also seems to have the runes carved all over her body and it looks as if she died from these injuries and not through the hands of the Ettin.
Orzworth |
"Let us bring Gilda's body - and the children outside - back to town," Orzworth suggests. "And the pendant."
Myrtella Sanova |
"Yes, let's go. Thanks for shaking me out of my stupor Orzworth... I was kind of in shock from this situation."
Heading back to town unless there's something we haven't explored yet; would it be advisable to bring back some flowers from that bloompatch since the first kids were not able to? or is that a breach of the town's laws/traditions?
GM Nowruz |
You do not find anything else in the caves.
After you have defeated the ettin and recovered the golden pendant, you emerge from the cave to find yourselves ... face to face with Aurelliax in her true form (picture in the slide deck).
She is a magnificent mature adult gold dragon whose presence dwarfs your own.
Orzworth |
Oh good! We can ask her if it would be appropriate to bring back flowers.
Orzworth silently bows his head in recognition of her dedication to protecting the people of the town.
Torgen 7th Son |
Torgen immediately kneels, stunned with both the power and regality of the royal dragon. The ordinarily loud dwarf is quiet in their presence.
Myrtella Sanova |
"Aurelliax! we have retrieved the pendant! mind giving us a ride to town? the villagers are eager to see you!"
GM Nowruz |
The dragon raises an eyebrow when hearing Myrtella’s tone ... silence follows for several seconds.
”Thank you, travelers, for protecting the people of Highdelve, and for recovering my amulet. Truly, you are the heroes these people needed. Let me commend you, as well, for sparing the lives of those children that belong to this town ... I will take care that they are loved and brought back to this community!“
Torgen 7th Son |
Torgen bows even lower.
My family will treasure this for generations. Thank you oh great dragon.
Charlemagne Caligula Desiderius |
Charlemagne kneels before the dragon and bows his head. ”It is truly a great honor to meet you, great and benevolent Aurelliax. Your gift will be treasured always, and will forever remind me of this day.”
Myrtella Sanova |
Myrtella helps the children to the dragon's back, and then climbs up herself.
