Is there a penalty for firing past the barricades? It's disadvantage for firing into combat, right?
The penalty is if you are using a 'ranged attack' within someone's threat range. If that's the case then you 'fire' with disadvantage.
In this case, the guards are behind a barricade and thus have 1/2 cover thus get +2 to AC.
@Sophie: we can retcon and you'll just join combat later.

Before you make Shiro's narrow hit miss due to cover, remember that cover doesn't apply to his attacks unless its total, and that'd mean someone standing behind a solid wall, completely blocked from vision or line of effect.

Ah, you read my mind. Wait, can you do that? :)
I intend to recap later today.

Kyarra Niälien |

shoot: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
"Eli is going to get herself killed if she keeps rushing headlong into battle like this," Kyarra managed to grunt in her native tongue - quite a feat considering the melodic nature of the Elvish language. "We'll back her up best we can, but I'll not get hacked apart because she is foolish."
Back on her feet, Kyarra kept her eyes on the uninjured enemy as she whispered to her brother. Taking care in the darkness, she found the broad target of the cultist's chest, and as if willed there, her arrow suddenly sprouted from his ribs.
So as I understand it, we don't take a penalty for shooting at cover, but their AC goes from 14 to 16?

Eliora Riese |

Can you confirm whether Kyarra's arrow takes out the guard Eliora is currently fighting so that she can focus on the other one?

Brother Shiro |

The wounded fellow should be down, so targeting the other guard...
Eldritch Blast: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Eldritch Blast, damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Things were going well so far, although Shiro silently lamented the need for all this violence. But such was the nature of life - constant struggle for survival, and today, these people seemed to stand in the way of the party's survival.
With a gesture and an effort of will, another of the ember-filled bolts of black smoke streaked towards the surviving guard, searing his flesh.

Eliora Riese |

longsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
The guard before her dropped as one of Kyarra's arrows sprouted from his neck. Eliora spun to face the remaining guard but spun too quickly and had a momentary episode of vertigo causing her attack to miss the guard by a lot.

Eliora Riese |

Eliora started to follow the guard but informed the others first. "The coward is retreating and I hear movement in the next room. I will pursue."
I assume that she can't attack the guard?

Sophie Wright |

Sophie finally made her way safely down the ladder only to find the enemies gone. "What did I miss?" she asked. When Eliora explained the guard had run she looked to the others for guidance. "Um...are we...all pursuing?"
Realizing that Eliora would probably need help, she followed. However, she was careful to remain behind the brave paladin. As she followed nervously, she felt energy brimming up and tried to focus it towards her hands.

Kyarra Niälien |

"Sword?" Kyarra asked, surprised, as she moved cautiously forward after the half-orc. "Are you a warrior now? Remember your lessons. Stay at range until that is no longer an option."
As she listened for whatever was in the next room, she added, "Granted, melee is probably inevitable with Eli charging around like a rutting elk."
Moving in cautiously, full defence for now, or whatever the 5e equivalent is.

Brother Shiro |

"Pursue, we should, and quickly," Shiro said, wincing as he put weight on the leg he had injured in his fall. "Going back, not an option. If we move now, the enemy surprised. Finding out what it happening. If we wait, have time to prepare defences. Force us to react to them, instead of them to us. Surrendering initiative, when attacking, bad tactics."
Shiro's all for pushing what little advantage of surprise we still have. The longer we wait, the more organized the resistance we face.

Hey everyone, I finished taking the second of my two exams. Woo hoo!
However, I start my vacation next Thursday so I don't think it makes much sense to pick this up only to have to suspend it again.
I'll be back in full swing on January 7, 2019.
OMG, 2019 almost here.
Everyone have happy holidays!!!
Game on!

Brother Shiro |

Aye, time does fly... I started with my vacation this week, and will be back half-way January... not that being away will affect posting possibilities this time around. I'll be ready when you get back into gear!

Fabian Benavente |

Hey guys,
I'm back from my winter break. I hope you all had wonderful holidays.
I have a ton of things to catch up on and this game is one of them. However, I'm not quite feeling the urge to start this game back up again. It just feels like another item on my to do list. And that is no way to do gaming.
Therefore, I'm going to suspend this PBP until further notice. If it makes you feel any better, I'm not doing any gaming right now. When I do, you'll be the first to be contacted.
You all have my email address if you want to reach out to me.
Game on!

Bummer T_T Can't say I'll miss the 5ed rules, but it's always a shame to lose a game... Oh well, you will feel up for another game soon enough, I trust ;^)

Eliora Riese |

As always, you know where to find us. When you're up for gaming again, when it doesn't feel like a chore, let me know :)
