"No!" Sophie cried out as the undead dwarf struck down Eliora. She reached out her hand and sparks flew outwards. The lightning coursed through the former dwarf's armor. Sophie took the creatures momentary stumble as a chance to retreat back to the hallway.

Very good point! Something a good DM should have known. :)

Eliora reeled under the undead's onslaught. Blackness threatened to overwhelm her vision numerous times but she fought against it. She took small comfort in the fact that the attack would have incapacitated or killed anyone else in the group. At least this way they remained safe as she took the brunt of the undead's ire.

Kyarra was glad that she'd trained beside mages growing up, otherwise the twin blasts of magic coming from Sophie and Shiro might have rattled her. As it was, she stepped forward, trusting them not to scorch her, and sliced her shortsword at the undead dwarf.

shortsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Sophie's blast, however, had knocked out the middle section of its ribcage, and where she should have hit flesh and bone, her sword whistled through air instead.

Dang, somebody else is going to have to finish off those last 2 HP

That should do it... Shiro doesn't get attack penalties from cover less than total, so I assume shooting into melee isn't an issue.

Alarmed at the ease the undead creature brought Eliora, Shiro didn't waste his breath by trying to appeal to the creature again. Instead, another smoke-and-embers bolt shot from his hand, striking the long-dead dwarf in the face, blasting apart most of its head.

Even on her knees, she'd be able to fight a dwarf at her height :) But Shiro made it unnecessary so it's all good.

Knowing that she was unsteady on her feet, even though she was doing her best to hide it, Eliora called on the last of Iomedae's healing blessings available to the half-orc. Her pallid complexion improved somewhat as the healing took hold.

The tunnel you came in split into two tunnels (a 'T' intersection). On one side was this temple but the other side is yet unexplored and seems to be the only way to move forward.

Yes, there's stuff here in the temple but I need you guys to tell me what you will do. I don't need you to tell me when your PCs are 'going to the bathroom' :) but I do need some general guidelines, even if OOC.

When it's obvious that combat will be over (4 people hitting something that has very few hit points left), I will assume that the enemy is killed and leave room for posting assuming this scenario (Actions 2? in this instance).

"Nor this humble monk... although some elders of order back home looked like this one," Shiro mused, thinking back at some of the white-bearded ancients in the Irorian monastery he had grown up in, who seemed to spend their whole time in silent meditation. "You are... alive, yes?" he asked, hurrying over to the fallen warrior maiden once it was clear the desiccated dwarf was down for good. "Rest, we need if more healing blessings is this one to use. But first, make sure there only one enemy, yes?" This temple was looking like the first secure resting place they had come across - there was no reason to leave, not when the armored woman was only barely clinging to life.

Eliora's heart was heavy and she obviously looked sad as they finished searching the temple. "I can't imagine what would have happened to cause a devout priest of Torag to abandon his faith. His body is now at rest but I worry for his soul."

The half-orc sat down heavily. "Rest sounds like a plan, Brother Shiro. My body is weary."

Looking at Kyarra she said, "When it comes to evil, you must trust Iomedae to work through me. If I had attacked when I meant to, that undead creature would not have been able to viciously attack any of us."

Eliora will use her heal dice after the short rest

I am a bit baffled about the hit dice thing and long and short rests.

So after a 1 hour rest, we can roll one die and add our con modifier, and regain that number of hit points? And it's one die, because we're level one? Next level we can do that twice?

And after a long rest, we get back all our HP, but not all our Hit Dice? I don't know what that last part means.

If Eliora doesn't heal much after her hour, she should take the potion.

Looking at Kyarra she said, "When it comes to evil, you must trust Iomedae to work through me. If I had attacked when I meant to, that undead creature would not have been able to viciously attack any of us."

Kyarra felt annoyed, but masked it behind her usual cold expression. After all, the half-orc had nearly died. "I see know that you have abilities to sense such evil. But you had not made that known to us. In the future, please, speak your intention to us, even if briefly, before such an attack."

After all, if you have time to yell threats to dead ears, you've got time to tell your companions what you're doing. She moved to the corpse and pulled the two arrows from it, examining them to see if they were still usable.

What's up with reusing ammo?

@Kyarel - what's up with the cat? Is he still around?

As the others rested, Kyarra stood guard in the door between the temple's antechamber and main room. While the others chatted, she kept her eyes on the exit. It was her nature to do this - to stand on the edges, looking outwards, to watch. She was trained to keep others safe, to look out for the good of the group, but that didn't mean she was any good in participating within the group.

When Eliora, Sophie and Anevia had recovered somewhat, Kyarra led everybody back out, and towards the south tunnel.

Assuming NPC get to heal a bit too?

After a short rest, Shiro has his Cure Wounds available again and can cast it if needed. Let’s see how Eliora rolls first, though, since there might be more need for it later, and Fabian declared we get only 2 short rests between long rests. And I kinda remember Fabian posting something about ignoring that “full heal after long rest” thing that I’m quite fine with, but can’t find the post so I might be imagining things ;^)

”Ladies, please,” Shiro murmured. ”A nice calming breath. Conflict not time for.”

Once it was clear that Eliora was in no immediate danger Shiro spent a few minutes satisfying his own curiosity by examining the forgotten temple, bowing respectfully at the altar and spending a few moments in silent prayer.

Yes, you do NOT get all your hit points after a long rest. You do get all your hit dice after a long rest. You can spend any hit dice you have after a short or long rest.

Therefore, it doesn't make any sense to have any unspent hit dice before a long rest because you will gain them all back (up to your maximum since there's no accumulating hit dice). So... how's this? you start off with all your hit dice after a long rest and these hit dice may be spent immediately after this long rest or after any short rest during the day.

Sort of confusing.

I'll post this on the campaign tab for reference.

Sorry to add to the question pile, but I'm confused by the discussion of when the new HD come into affect from a long rest. I was thinking since I'm only down 3hp, it would be better to save my HD until I take more damage or until we long rest. But you're saying we should use them all before the long rest. Does that mean for a long rest we can only heal by using up our HD for the next day and anything saved before the nights rest is lost? If so, yikes!

Sophie quietly tried to mediate between the Eliora and Kyarra. "I think it was just a misunderstanding, right? We still don't know what everyone can do or what everyone believes." She smiled at Eliora, "Now that we know you can sense that kind of evil, we will take care to listen more in the future. But the more information you give us, the more we can help you."

As others explored the temple, Sophie found a pew to sit on to get the weight off of her injured leg. However, she found herself quite restless as they waited.

Dang it, Site ate my post for the last turn. Allright, I'll try and change it to this one.

Kyarel kept his bow loosely trained on the dwarf while the others turned to looting. 'Hey Sis, that guy looked dead BEFORE we started hitting him. How do we know he's not going to get back up?'

After the dwarf's ring was taken from his unresponsive corpse Kyarel finally accepted the dwarf was probably dead. He spent a few minutes thinking about it, dragged the man outside, and then returned.

Kyarel shook his head at Eliora. "I thought you were dead. I'm not sure how you're still standing!" A thought brushed through his head "Do you feel alright? No fever or... No, you wouldn't feel it yet..." he trails off and looks meaningfully to his sister and then the doorway.

While they stand guard Kyarel speaks quietly to his sister in elven. "Alright - If there's an undead here that suggests that it's probably not holy anymore, right? ."

A little later he asks Kyarra "So - lots of undead are contagious. Do you think we need to keep an eye on the paladin? They're immune to that sort of thing. Right?"

Shivering Kyarrel looks over at the corner where the dwarf's dead eyes stare sightlessly at his killers. "Wow, the more you star at it, the worse it gets. Should we have cut his head off, or something?"

The young elf looks up, as if for a moment he could stare through stone. "How long do you think it will be until Amme comes for us?"

Eliora looked from one serious face to another and burst into a hearty laugh. "There is no conflict. If there were conflict we would not be talking," she said good-naturedly. "I was simply pointing out that not everyone knows everything and so should keep an open mind. Things can't be controlled completely all the time."

She looked slightly surprised, "I can't believe that the rest of you couldn't smell that stench. Obviously there was something evil present and to doubt a goddess' promptings is folly. I cannot give you a list of how Iomedae chooses to use me if I do not know myself. That is why I said you must trust Iomedae."

The thing is that you do NOT have to spend your healing hit dice every time someone calls for a short rest.

I am trying to figure out a way for you to heal overnight and also have some healing dice to heal throughout the day. As you can tell, these NPCs hit hard (they also go down easy) so the system may take some tweaking.

For now, I would use all your healing dice before a long rest because you will get them all back in the morning. If in the morning, you are not fully healed, you can use some hit dice then but those won't be available later for short rests.

Clear as mud, eh? :)

Action 1

Quote:
She added, “They are not necessarily bad, are they?”

"Many stories and legends, telling even evil can turn to fight for good. Also, many righteous one has done evil, with best intentions. Judging without hearing every side, dangerous," Shiro agreed. Indeed, even his own kami patron had, according to some of the fragments of the stories he had located, caused untold devastation by trying to do the right thing, yet after all his sins he still sought to make amends and turn things around.

"Open mind should be kept, judge only what is known, not suspected, yet prepare for the worst."

Action 2

Shiro cried out in surprise as two somethings fell from the ceiling and landed on the two elves, then vanished behind cloaks of absolute darkness. Aiming towards the muffled cries of distress and the general centre of the globes of midnight, the Tian man sent out another blast of ash and embers, but saw the energy splash harmlessly on the far wall behind - clearly his strike had missed its mark.

Disadvantage sucks, and Shiro's only spell that doesn't rely on attack requires eyes on target. Move away, then try to attack...

Eldrithc Blast: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Eldrithc Blast: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 I rather doubt this is enough since it's single digits only

"KY!" shouted Kyarel as his sister was engulfed. Without even thinking he launched himself through the air, shortsword in one hand and the other outstretched to find something that was not his sister to stab.

Is there a roll to identify them? Tell me if I am doing something wrong here...

No real rule so we'll play it by ear...

This is magical monster so Intelligence-Arcana with a DC = 10 + creature CR = 11

If you pass the check, you learn these are darkmantles.

How's that?

Arcana: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Sophie could have sworn she heard a strange noise as Kyarel screamed. Like the creature was unhappy. "Um guys! Maybe they don't like noise!" Turning to the darkness she screamed, "HEEEEEEEEEEEY! Look! I think they're bothered, but I don't think I'm loud enough!"

Wood Elf Ranger 2 | AC 15 | HP 12/12 | Str +0; Dex +3; Con +2; Int +1; Wis +2; Cha -1 | perception +4, init +3, stealth +5

Is this magical darkness? Can the people with darkvision still see?

Kyarra had no idea what hit her, but she knew she didn't want it on her. Trying to get her arms into position, she grabbed a handful of smooth flesh and attempted to pull it from her head.

STR: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

It is magical darkness and darkvision does NOT penetrate the darkness.

BTW, it doesn't say but I'm assuming that these creatures crawl on the floor and up walls (10' rate) and 'fly' only by floating down from above.

Questions?

Game on!

Before I post, if we attack the creatures do we also hurt who they're grappling? If it doesn't say specifically in the description, do we assume no?

Assume no but I may 'transfer' some damage from the creature to the person. Just to be mean. :)

BTW, Kyarra pulled her 'toothy umbrella' from herself.
