Actually, I take 3 points of damage. This looks like an alignment-based effect, and because I cast corruption resistance on myself, I take 10 less damage from effects that deal damage based on my alignment. Because I like to play overpowered races. ;)

Exiel scowls as he realises that the centaur is a little too far to charge at. He takes a double move to get closer, and declares to the centaur "By Torag you shall be smited!"

Alden double-moves forward, as his short legs unfortunately keep him from going very far.

Sue also double-moves forward, though she can move significantly farther than Alden.

As Exiel moves closer, the light from Constantin's ring illuminates more of the cavern, and they see something of a horror lurking further in the cavern - a centaur-like creature with a frost giant's torso atop the body of a tremendous eight-legged stallion.

A hulking creature with the lower body of a massive eight-legged stallion. Rising from its equine body is the trunk of a muscled humanoid with icy blue skin and a prodigious white beard rimed with ice. Piercing blue eyes glare beneath beetled brows and a spiralling pair of horns which curl upward. It grips in his hands a massive lance which looks like it has a tree's entire trunk for a shaft.

DC 26 knowledge nature:
The creature is rare sight indeed. It is a Svathurim, a creature that is kin to frost giants, ice trolls and other creatures of snow and ice. Their powerful builds make them deadly physical combatants, though you could probably tell that just by looking at their immensely muscled frames.

However, it does not act yet.

Instead, it is the centaur who acts. It sees Exiel advancing and casts a spell...that Exiel resists effortlessly with no ill effect. He then moves further into cavern. Alden and Sue also move in towards the centaur...though it is only after they move in that they too see the huge monstrosity deeper in the cavern.

Alden, I still need the saves from you and Sue.
42, you have not seen the huge creature inside yet, and without low-light vision will not see him unless you stand close to Exiel. What do you do?

No problem, 42. And no there was no time. The centaur had a readied action for when Exiel opened the door, and you all got caught in the area of effect. Combat started immediately after.

The massive 8-legged (10-limbed) juggernaut levels his lance and kicks off into a gallop, bearing down on the nearest target...the little gnomish monk in his way!

Ouch. Better Sue than you, Alden.

The sound of pounding hoof-beats echo throughout the cavern, drowning out the sound of Sue's agonised scream as the huge creature impales her on his lance and leaves her gasping for breath. Her body goes limp as the creature pulls his lance from her body and she slumps to the ground, unconscious and bleeding.

Exiel: I'll give you this much. Yes it is evil. No one has knowledge nature?

Exiel glows with radiant energy as he calls on Torag to aid him against the monolithic foe. The huge centaur-like creature stabs at the 7 Exiels as they dart towards him.

attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 22 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 22 - 4 = 22

Exiel glows so furiously that the creature recoils instinctively and fails to deliver a proper blow. He soon pays for the error as Exiel pluges his hooked lance deep into the creature's horse-chest and twists his lance before pulling it out again. The hook of his lance catches and rakes across flesh and icy blood vessels on the way out, causing severe damage as it pulls out profuse amounts of blood and gore. But he enormous beast has lots of blood to lose, and he still stands, his eyes fixed intently and furiously on the aasimar.

The smaller centaur snarls something in a foreign tongue as he gestures wildly at Exiel, then begins chanting as he backs away into the darkness.

Dispel check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Exiel gets the impression that the centaur was trying to get rid of the annoying images around him, but luck is really not on their side this day. So far at least. You also get the impression that if you understood what the centaur was saying, you'd be hearing a lot of cursing. A lot of extensive and colourful cursing.

Constantin Vladescu wrote:

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Alden moves up to defend his allies and 42 feeds Sue a potion. Her wounds close a little, just enough to bring her back to consciousness (but she now goes after 42).

The huge centaur-creature glowers at Exiel, then suddenly brings its horned forehead down towards him, then as it pulls itself upright, raises its forelegs and kicks out at him, then shuffles back just a little to deliver 3 quick jabs with its lance!

Exiel smites the large centaur yet again, putting it in a lot of pain, but it is still standing.

touch attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

Oh dear. I was running out of excuses not to use that.

On a successful hit, the ice immediately freezes around Alden, trapping it within a 9-inch-thick solid block of pale blue ice. The ice blocks line of effect to the entrapped Alden, who is helpless (but can still breathe).

Alden, you take 9 points of cold damage on your turn, and you get the impression that you will continue to take that damage per round until freed. Exiel and 42 can attempt to free Alden by either dealing enough damage to the ice or attempting to break it all at once with a strength check.

The "little guy" who is one size category bigger than you. :p Since you're taking your readied action, you won't get to move, but you will get to act before the centaur gets to act again.

42 fires two blazing rays from his fingers. The first strikes the ice encasing Alden, melting a good portion of it but not yet enough to free his ally. The second hits the centaur in the flank, causing the smell of singed horse-hair to fill the air.

The larger centaur rears up on its four hind legs, then tramples over Exiel and keeps on moving to trample over 42. It seems particularly adept at this manoeuver, and leaves no opening for attacks of opportunity as it does so, nor are either of you able to even try to avoid it. (Improved overrun.)

Sorry 42, with Exiel's AC as high as it is, the large centaur had no reason to keep attacking normally. This was the best and only way he could deal damage to Exiel, and he had no reason not to include you in the trample. I tried to hint that something was coming. :(

Hold your centaurs. I think Exiel's right. He does get an attack of opportunity, and yes, I will allow Exiel to use that sentence as a promise.

The large centaur attempts to evade the tip of Exiel's lance as it commences its charge of doom...
acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

But Exiel is ready for it, and plunges his lance deep into its chest. The humanoid chest. His recollection of his earlier words to Alden give him a surge of strength, and he plunges the lance in deep. The huge creature rears up in pain and gives a terrifying bellow. It stays in that position for a few long moments, and for a while it looks like it will regain its footing. Its four front hoofs touch the ground...then buckle, and the whole mass of muscle and bone collapse to the ground, groaning piteously, then falling silent, its chests just barely heaving as it bleeds on the ground.

42 gets the impression that he just had a very close brush with death. The smaller centaur screams with rage and fury at Exiel.

Exiel (3 images left)

Alden (encased in ice and helpless)

And I believe it is still Exiel's turn, since that was an attack of opportunity. Damn paladins ruining my fun. Just kidding. Well done.

Exiel gives an exclamation of joy and relief as his last ditch effort to stop the mutant-centaur succeeds.

He turns to the normal-sized/legged centaur and grins broadly.

"One down. You're next."

I've still got the smite on this guy that I declared in round 1.

Exiel trots up to the smaller centaur and stabs.

You can just call him a centaur now.

Exiel lashes out at the centaur and rakes the hook of his lance along the centaur's flank, drawing a ragged gash. The centaur's eyes are bulging with fury and hatred as he closes a fist around a tiny, icy, rune-carved hammer hanging from a chain around his neck. Waves of negative energy burst from him and wash over all of you...except Alden, who oddly enough is protected by the very ice that is freezing him to death.

Exiel, 42 and Sue need to make will saves. Sue has damage reduction vs negative energy, but if she fails her save, she will continue bleeding again and will need a stabilisation roll. Alden is still slowly freezing to death.

42, you're up, then Exiel.

Exiel and 42 pin the centaur between them, and 42 in particular delivers a powerful blow that flares with dark vampiric energy. The centaur roars in fury, and his muscles swell before your eyes. He is severely bloodied, but he fights back with an almost crazed look in his eyes.

He goes for 42 first, perceiving that he had underestimated the human before, rearing back to kick at him with its hooves as it swings its oversized warhammer at his head.

hammer: 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 14 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 39

>>hoof damage: 1d6 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 12

Though it had stayed back before, the centaur demonstrates that it is no slouch in melee either! 42 falls to a series of hammer and hoof blows. As the centaur's hoofs touch the ground once more, just as Exiel thinks the centaur is done attacking, it wheels around and swings its hammer one more time.

hammer again!: 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 14 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 35

The hammer goes right through another image. Meanwhile, Alden continues to suffer from being encased in ice.

For my own edification, what is the spell-like ability that the centaur used to encase me in ice? I thought at first it was a witch's Ice Tomb hex, but that doesn't involve a touch attack. :)

I have you at -1hp and stable.

Exiel drives his hooked lance through the centaur's chest. The equestrian spits a curse as he pulls himself along the haft of the lance towards Exiel and raises his hammer...then slumps lifeless to the ground, the hammer dropping to the ground with a loud thud.

Meanwhile Alden continues to freeze, but Exiel is now able to attend to the rest of you as he chooses.

(Is it pvp if Exiel chooses not to free Alden and lets him freeze to death?)

Deep within the cavern stands a ring of menhirs that encircle a yawning pit more than 50 feet wide. A long flight of stone-carved stairs coils along its inner perimeter, descending 120 feet down into the darkness. The bottom of the pit is covered with the countless bones, mostly humanoid.

detect magic:
The pit radiates a strong aura of necromancy.

Perception DC25:
There is nothing of apparent value among the dusty, aged bones apart a single blue dragon scale lying on the stone floor in an area cleared of bones.

A large, ironbound chest sits on the floor near the standing stones. It is locked, but a quick search of the centaur yields the key to the chest, which contains coins, rough-cut gems, art objects, and jewelry worth 12,000 gp in total.

As soon as Alden is free, he will lay on hands on Sue and 42 once each. Sorry guys that's all I've got.

Sue: 1d6 ⇒ 4
42: 1d6 ⇒ 5
That should be enough to wake them both?

Then he turns his attention to the pit, scanning it with detect magic as he looks into it.

"Hmm...There is nothing of apparent value among the dusty, aged bones apart a single blue dragon scale lying on the stone floor in an area cleared of bones. But the pit itself seems to radiate a strong aura of necromancy..."

"Well, it's a good thing I'm naturally resilient to necromancy," he declares as he takes a deep breath, casts protection from evil on himself, then trots down into the pit to retrieve the scale.
