"Maybe you need to start the ritual again from the beginning? If you try going back to the first glyph and saying the line, and then coming here to say the second line, it may start working for you."

Sue will go back and try the first ritual again.

Sue re-attempts the ritual from the beginning, and this time she is able to pass the first 2 glyphs unscathed.

Still further down the path, you encounter a third glyph. You still don't know how many stages there are to the whole ritual.

DC 20 Knowledge Arcana, anyone:

The runes denote that the right word to use in the ritual-phrase described by Exiel earlier is 'health'.

DC 20 Linguistics or comprehend languages spell, anyone[/spoiler:

The glyph is shaped in the form of the Iobarian word for 'health'.

42 looks at the new glyph. "I wonder how many glyphs there are... i don't want to finish the ritual."

He moves forward and recites "I, Test Subject Number 42, sacrifice my Health to the Three Who are One."

GM:

Arcana: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
42 is looking for a way that the ritual may be destroyed safely so that they can continue through the next one without reciting the words with no ill effect.

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

You can take 10. I'll just give you the information then. You do not know of anyway to stop the ritual other than walking past a glyph without saying the words. Exiel's plan was to stop at the last glyph, but you do not know how many there are in total.

42 activates and walks past the third glpyh with no ill effect. Going from your past actions, it appears that the rest of you will follow.

The next glyph (this is the fourth one) you encounter reads "strength". Who wants to be the first to test whether this is the last glyph?

Exiel was ready to just push through the previous one. He takes a deep breath, then walks past the glyph without saying the words.

"You guys wait here."

He will then walk on ahead to see whether there is another glyph further ahead, or whether this is the last one.

Most likely she want get effected by this one just like the last ones we've been across." 42 looks at Sue as he is holding onto Exiel's shoulder. "Sue, what do you say, are you willing to scout for us?"

Wait, is Sue doing the rituals too?

Exiel's saves are all higher than Sue's (and I believe everyone else's) and I also get misc bonuses against necro-based effects on top of that, so I think I'm best-suited. Sue went back and started the ritual from part 1, so we're all at stage 3 of the ritual at the moment.

And I'm happy to do it 'cos I was previously suspecting that there were only 3 stages, but you managed to prove me wrong. XD

GM, feel free to roll my saves for me. Exiel will keep pushing through past the glyphs until he suffers an ill-effect. Once/if that happens, I'll see what needs to be remedied.

Ok then.

will: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (7) + 19 = 26

Exiel walks right past the glyph, and as he does so, it flashes brilliantly. Exiel feels a curse attempting to take its hold on him, but his divine protection wards off the curse.

fort: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24

A little ways further, Exiel finds a final glyph just before a door. As he steps past the glyph, it blazes with dark energy again as a black fire engulfs Exiel...but even so he suspects that it could have been much worse.

damage: 3d6 + 20 ⇒ (3, 5, 6) + 20 = 34

The door beyond is locked, but the key that the mysterious maiden 'dropped' earlier fits into the lock, and it turns.

Exiel is now past the final glyph, and I assume that he calls out to you guys to tell you what happened to him. Exiel, you cannot get to the rest of the party without crossing over the 5th and 4th glyphs again, but they are aware of what you have seen and experienced.

42, you are able to decipher the 5th rune as the word for 'life'

Alden steps forward just before 42 does.

The sound of cackling fills the air as a dark wind issues from the rune. It swirls around Alden, contorting the battered halfling and bending his form over. He screams, and as he does, his voice becomes noticeably hoarse. After a moment, the winds subside, and you see a very rather different halfling before you. His back is hunched, his hair and eyebrows white, and his voice has gone all hoarse and crotchety...but his eyes gleam with new-found wisdom and intellect.

Alden, you advance to the 'old' age category, taking -2 to STR, DEX and CON, but gaining +1 to WIS, INT and CHA. This counts as a condition that you need to remove by the end of the scenario if you want to continue using this character in PFS, because you cannot have old age characters in PFS.

42, you can decide whether or not you want to follow Alden after seeing what happened to him. If you still decide to walk through, make 2 fort saves.

Exiel, Alden and Constantin, please remember that you are all wounded and may want to get some healing.

"I got ya, gramps," Exiel laughs as he hoists Alden to his feet, shaking his head in disbelief at Alden's recklessness. Although, considering the battering he'd taken from the final glyph, he wonders which of them had been more reckless.

"I guess those are the choices then. Get burnt by dark flames or turned into a geezer."

GM, were the black flames fire or negative energy damage? Also, does my knowledge of the ritual extend to knowing how to reverse the effects?

That is for character creation. This is what page 22 says.

The only conditions you can carry over are ones that do not have a mechanical effect, negative levels or ability drain.

42 begins to wink in and out of existence on the material plane as he casts his spell. He blinks out, and reappears on the other side of the rune, having suffered no ill effect.

42, I'll allow that to bypass the rune since you are on a different plane when you cross the boundary. But 42 will have to live the rest of his life knowing that he is one step away from completing that ritual! Lol.

Constantin and Sue, how do you two want to handle this? If you walk past without completing the ritual, I will need 2 fort saves from each of you. Exiel, I assume you are still going to use battle cry if any of them decide to endure the final glyph?

"I don't know if the hat can be useful, but those glasses are Eyes of the Eagle, they help with seeing."

Sorry guys, I was a little distracted by Constantin's demise that I messed up the room a little. This is not the room with the giants, and you did not hear anything coming from this room. Feel free to ret-con your buff-casting, or keep them up if you wish.

The light from Constantin's ring pours into the room as Exiel opens the door. You are greeted by a strange sight. A withered cornfield extends in all directions beneath a waning moon in a starry night sky. Dozens of dead ravens lie strewn on the ground among the shriveled stalks. There are three other doors leading from this chamber.

Amidst the withered stalks of corn stands a bent and aged crone leaning heavily on a staff. She sees you enter, and notes the bundles on Exiel's back."Six there were that came, now but four stand. The Crone is not for the faint of heart or ill-prepared. But I am pleased you have come this far, Bearer of the Black Mantle. The cancer grows in the womb of the Crone. To face the Curse of Eons, you must have time on your side."

Having said this, she nods at the four of you and casts a spell. She begins to fade from view as she adds "do not let your guard down!"

As she fades from sight, so does the withered corn field, revealing a rectangular room formed from chiseled granite blocks. Carvings of lifeless cornfields adorn the walls, and withered cornstalks and dead ravens litter the floor. A simple sleeping pallet lies on the floor against the north wall, next to a small trunk and a nightstand holding a basin of fresh water and a few candles.

A thick, evil fog begins to fill the chamber as the dead ravens on the floor slowly rise from amid the withered cornstalks. Horrid shapes form within the cloying green mist, which pulses sporadically and with seeming voracity.

If I didn't hear anything, I would not have cast any buffs. If we're borrowing Constantin's gear, Exiel will borrow Constantin's keen falcata. I'm not proficient, but if I'm smiting I'll still have a very good chance of hitting.

He has no idea what the swarm of undead ravens is, but he knows enough about swarms to know that 42's spells would be the best for dealing with them.

"Fear and negative energy, I can deal with. 42, any chance you could chuck a fireball and catch both these amorphous things in it?" Or any AoE spell?

Exiel moves into the room and casts divine favour on himself, Constantin's oddly-shaped but keenly sharp sword ready in hand. Hopefully, the gaseous-ooze would come for him and buy his allies time to deal with the swarm.

How did you read my mind. If there was any sign of people in the room, 42 would have hit himself and Alden with shield.

42 shouts at those around the bat things. "Make room!" He takes a 5 foot back and casts Fireball where the red 4 pointed star is at. hitting both sets of bad guys, and if Alden if he doesn't move out of the way in his turn. Fireball: 9d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 5, 6, 3, 1, 6, 5) = 39

Shield is a personal spell, so you can't use it on Alden. He needs to be able to UMD it. He can use Constantin's shield if he needs one, but his own shield was not damaged by the Bebilith. But yes, 42 can go in with shield cast.

Exiel makes room for a fireball and calls upon his deity to guide his sword-arm. 42 calls out for Alden to make room as he prepares to cast his spell.

42: The fog has ooze traits, meaning it is mindless, but has low will and reflex saves. It is also affected by strong winds, but I don't think any of you can use that to your advantage. It is neither resistant nor immune to fire.

Yes, Artrosa does seem to be a rather difficult and deadly dungeon!

Alden, you are blinded for 1d4 ⇒ 4 days. It can also be healed with a DC20 heal check or any appropriate magic.

Alden is overcome by the ravens and staggers back whilst Sue delivers a flurry of blows at the raven swarm. They prove easy enough to hit, and each swing connects with several birds at once. 42 follows up with a devastating fireball.

reflex Crow: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (6) + 8 - 10 = 4
reflex Fog: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15

The blazing inferno engulfs both the swarm of crows and the fog. The remaining crows are incinerated. The fog however still stands, or rather floats, and moves forward towards Exiel. He sees many half-formed phantom shapes within the fog, but stands his ground stoically. Exiel can't fail this save. It then surges forward and reaches out towards Exiel with a tendirl of mist that glows purple with dark energy.

Exiel simply steps aside and avoids the slow tendril.
