And now for the first of my magic item questions.
Anaconda's Coils - Looking at this, but wondering if it would be possible to jack up the price and pick up one with a greater Strength bonus.
Tarwas, E’Sum Tel Myth Drannor |
Well, however you put it, at least Canon Pwent is at least old, quite possible even venerable, as he fought when Mithril Hall was overrun at some point before 1200 (his high age was even a minor plot point in one of the later books if I remember right). If he's younger or older than Bruenor could only change if he's already venerable or not.
Maybe we should found the brigade of ancient warriors?^^
You know, sitting around all day, sharing stories of past glory while nagging that in our days everything was better and the youth nowadays is worthless, before proceeding to kick their asses.
DM Nabu |
@Thibbledorf Pwent
Sure, just add 14500 gp to the price of any belt that also raises strength and you get an improved version of Anaconda's Coils.
If you want to be sure about the age, you can indeed make him old or venerable and just buy a mantle of immortality!
@Vuvu
Heh, thanks! I'd really like to be able to multitask so I can answer to every question and devote the same efforts to everyone... Tomorrow I'll update the list, perhaps with links to sheets and backstories for my own sanity :D
Let's see if hyperlinks do work for me now, just some music that I would likely listen to while writing off the story.

Yay it works!

Been busy for the past few days, but the stat math is now in the profile. I did a little tweaking on his sheet, but for the moment everything about his crunch except for all the minor, non-magical items is finished. That part I'll probably leave for if he gets accepted, since it's lots of small things like adventuring gear and being prepared for anything, so it's not really a change to the character, and really time consuming. Other than that, or some changes to spell selection I may think of, he's just about done.
Thibbledorf Pwent |
My regular gaming group has been doing the theme song thing for years. It's always fun, and occasionally it's actually a really good character building tool. For Pwent?
I started with "Out of my Way", by Seether. Then I thought, sure, that shows off the angry bits, but it doesn't really capture the kinda silly nature of the battlerager.
Then I took a look at "I'm Gonna Kill You", by Wynn Stewart. Heh. Something about the happy, jaunty little way this song cruises through talking about murder reminded me of Pwent.
So, some combination of those. Heh.
Tarwas, E’Sum Tel Myth Drannor |
While I actually somewhat like Barbie Girl in all it's over the top cheesines, I don't really see it fitting Tarwas (well, besides that he is an elf^^).
I guess I would instead go with over the top pathos: 40 to one
I think it fits quite nicely to the war and his end, especially if one changes a few words in his mind:
Baptised in fire.
40 to 1
So silent before the storm
Awaiting command
A few has been chosen to stand
As one outnumbered by far
The orders from high command
Fight back, hold your ground!
In early September it came
A war unknown to the world
No army may enter that land
That is protected by Elvish hand
Unless you are 40 to 1
Your force will soon be undone
Baptised in fire
40 to 1
Spirit of Seldarine
Death and glory
Soldiers of Cormanthor
Second to none
Wrath of the Fiendhordes brought to a halt
The 8th of September it starts
The rage of the Abyss
A barrage of arrows and spells
Stand fast, the Mythal will hold
The captain has pledged his life
I'll face my fate here!
The sound of Fireball's strike
So fierce
The thunder of spells
So come, bring on all that you've got
Come hell, come high water,
Never stop
Unless you are 40 to 1
Your lives will soon be undone
Baptised in fire
40 to 1
Spirit of Seldarine
Death and glory
Soldiers of Cormanthor
Second to none
Wrath of the Fiendhordes brought to a halt
Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, fathers and sons at war
Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, fathers and sons at war
Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, buried in history
No army may enter that land
That is protected by Elvish hand
Unless you are 40 to 1
Your force will soon be undone
Baptised in fire
40 to 1
Spirit of Seldarine
Death and glory!
Soldiers of Cormanthor
Second to none
Wrath of the Fiendhordes brought to a halt
No, no, no

Okay, according to the timeline research I've done so far, the last Salvatore book before 1374 would be "The Orc King", which supposedly ends towards the end of 1372 (according to this timeline website) with the establishment of the Kingdom of Many-Arrows. After that comes "The Pirate King", which supposedly takes place in the fall of 1376, so presumably, in 1374, both Drizzt and Pwent are still chilling out in Mithral Hall or nearby.
With that in mind, my story for Pwent is coming along nicely. I decided he probably was at least old, and over the last thirty-seven years I wouldn't be surprised if he made the transition to venerable (thus his infirmity in "Gauntlgrym"). With that in mind, he pretty much needs some magic boost to keep him in the game, and thus the Mantle of Immortality is totally making an appearance. But!
In Salvatore's books (and much of the Realms as I understand them), magic items - especially powerful magic items - are rarely just picked up in a shop. Among other things, that's kinda boring. So, I'm working in the quest for that there Mantle to be a big part of Pwent's story. Cool by you?
My first question about story: Does Mithral Hall still stand? I know you said "most civilized lands" were overrun, but how about ancient dwarven fortresses? On a related note, is Bruenor still alive? These are kinda major questions for what Pwent's been up to in all this time. I'd be glad to spin a tale about these things myself, but I thought I'd see if you already had plans before I went too crazy with it.

I was thinking that we probably died valiantly defending Mithral Hall, Catti-Brie and Bruenor against demons. Be it actually in Mithral Hall or outside, leave it to GM whether or not they still stand. At the very least, we'd have at least one adventure together before meeting a demise, I expect. Once finishing the canon, my own story will get done. Thousands of pages down, still thousands to go.

Pre-chosen, because technically you don't have those mythic tiers yet at the start of the game. They'll be granted on the first post.
@Oterisk
I'd say no to implanted ioun stones. They have to revolve around your head to work, so if you implant them they cease to be effective.
@Thibbledorf
Telling a tale about how you got your mantle of immortality is certainly cool for me.
Mithral Hall has just been conquered by demon-backed orcs after a 30-year long siege. I wouldn't be surprised if you (and Drizzt) died while defending the city to the last, allowing dwarven women and children to head deep underground for safety.
There's got to be a really irritated mythic dwarf after that...
Thibbledorf Pwent |
Just got conquered? Fantastic. That is precisely how I wanted that to play out - and oooohh yes, full of rage and willing to dish it out.
Speaking of which - I do believe that with the exception of a few pieces of formatting (mostly under skills), and maybe another minor magic item or two, Pwent's crunch is now complete within the profile. If you get a chance, take a look and let me know if something seems wrong, or even just if you have suggestions. One thing I've been toying with is dropping the levels of fighter. I like having the Overrun feats in there (ain't nobody getting between Pwent and his target), but if you'd rather simplify things by making him straight Barbarian, that's understandable.
Edit: Whoops, forgot about Mythic Feats. He's already picked up Mythic Power Attack, but I'm totally unsure what to throw his other two choices at. There isn't a single other 'upgraded' feat I'm aware of that he qualifies for, so I'm wondering if you have any suggestions. Some form of Improved or Greater Grapple, or Improved Unarmed Strike maybe?
Tarwas, E’Sum Tel Myth Drannor |

Hmm, I didn't think about that. I guess that means he wont use the Celestial Armor (yet) and instead rely on the Armor Spell, as he's unlikely to suffer the Spell Failure before going Mythic. Should also bring his AC closer to the rest of the submissions (though dangerously near the auto-hit point for CR 20 enemies).
Yeah, the collection of Mythic Feats is somewhat strange and limited. Most are almost useless outside of specialised cases (who had the idea to give one to all the seldom used Dual Skill feats?) while Power Attack is freakingly strong (especially with Two Handed Fighter, that's just plain madness). I hope the final product has some more choices.

that's good. hopefully they fix the 3+tier mythic power as well. I mean, 1st level wizard abilities are 3+stat, why should mythic abilities be the same? I can understand perhaps not making it based on a stat modifier, because people can end up with 30+ uses of mythic power a day (with the feat that lets you use two stats). But, that being said, a total of 13 uses of mythic power a day is chickenscratch when you consider that you are likely to have at least 13 different ways to use mythic power at that tier. i think 3+(tier*2) or 5+(tier*2) would be better
Tenro |
well yes the options are powerful enough i think. But to me, the fact that most things cost a use of mythic power, and you get so few uses, kinda stinks.
Imagine a wizard, with their 3+Int per day little level 1 ability. Then imagine if half of their additional abilities were also used out of the same pool of uses. Or a monk, but half of all of its abilities cost Ki points as well.
Actually now that i think about it, a good fix for mythic power would also factor in actual character level. Or, instead of that, just have less things require the expenditure of mythic power.
Drizzt DoUrden |
Once my reading of The Orc King is done in the next day or two, the backstory will get done. What I have in mind will start with Catti-brie returning after a brief study of magic to warn Drizzt and Mithril Hall of the coming disaster, just a little too late. Guenhwyvar will be caught on the material plane and suffer for it, just like during the Time of Trouble. An adventure to change Guenhwyvar into a native of the material plane commences, to create a body for her and make her a native, including an orc druid/shaman. Drizzt once again aids the orcs in subsequent as they resist the demons, ultimately only delaying the inevitable, but in the effort saves Guenhwyvar. Convinced that Mithril Hall could not stand unless Drizzt and others could find help, he quests to find forgotten artifacts and to recover what could be found from places already fallen. He finds some means to help, and returns with haste to Mithril Hall. In this time, he acquires for himself a scabbard of keen edges and amulet plus armor for Guenhwyvar. Despite his efforts, once again the demons overpower him, and this time he is captured. What happens then... I'll have decided in a couple days.
The most remarkable part of Drizzt's gear, of course, are his scimitars (and the onyx figurine, though now Guenhwyvar is a native of the material plane). I was wondering if it would be alright to make the scimitars intelligent items. R.A. Salvatore seemed to really like sentient weapons.
Icingdeath has a history with Drizzt in destroying demons. Some have said it to have sentience, in quelling damage from fire and having devastating effect against them. If I'm not mistaken, making it a good aligned weapon will bypass the damage reduction of all but the strongest demons.
Ego: 8
Senses: 30 ft (normal)
Communication: Empathy
Alignment: Neutral Good
Purpose: Destroy evil outsiders
Power: 3 times a day- Protection from Energy (fire) caster level 5 (60 damage resisted)
Twinkle again and again emits a blue glow that has a emphatic connection with Drizzt. More so than Icingdeath, Twinkle communicates with Drizzt through the same emphatic connection. This alone suggests it is an intelligent item. Its power is more subtle, though this is an outright effort to optimize.
Ego: 6
Senses: 30 ft (normal)
Communication: Empathy
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Purpose: None
Power: 3 times a day- Instant Enemy (Not to have bane work with, unless you say otherwise)
Both would be 52,500 gp, and completely legal if I'm not mistaken. Room enough to make them smarter and/or wiser. If Twinkle is approved, I wouldn't hesitate to make Drizzt a Skirmisher to avoid casting spells. He needs Favored Enemy (and Instant Enemy) for very much-needed attack and damage, and the AC boost.
Drizzt is supposed to have good willpower, but is lacking in this build. I'd like to add a constant protection from evil effect from a circlet to emulate this. Or as a second effect to a headband of inspired wisdom. It would be 4,000 gp value, or 6,000 additional cost to the headband. It is using normal item creation rules.
None of these are essential, though, so I don't mind if these are disapproved.
Thibbledorf Pwent |
Drizzt - since we're both probably including canon events/personages, let's start working together a bit. I don't have it all pretty yet, but this is the gist of what I've put together for Pwent; I've included a few vague first attempts to mesh your story with mine. Let me know what you think, and if I need to alter anything to fit what you have in mind for Drizzt.
Feeling he's failed his King, Pwent leaves Mithral Hall to find somewhere he won't be so useless. While wandering Icewind Dale, he nearly falls to rogue demons, but is saved by Wulfgar, who convinces the old dwarf that he may yet be able to find some way to help the Hall. The two travel together for some time, and eventually come across a high mountain village, still hidden from the demonic forces, that is being menaced by a nearby evil wizard.
The wizard, once a good man and guardian of the area, became obsessed with finding a way to thwart his own mortality. He has acquired many varieties of immortality-inducing artifacts, but has not yet made the discovery of halting the aging process in truth. Rumors in the village indicate that the wizard is about to make a deal with the demons, trading the lives of the villagers in exchange for further longevity, and Wulfgar and Pwent set out to stop him.
Being the heroes they are, they succeed, and acquire the wizard's Mantle of Immortality as well as a nacreous gray ioun stone, and a few other trinkets. Pwent puts on the Mantle, restoring his youth and strength, and Wulfgar takes the ioun stone. The two fight their way back across the Realms and return first to Icewind Dale, and then Mithral Hall, where they find it under siege. Breaking through the lines, they make their way to where King Bruenor is planning a last stand to allow the young and the wounded to escape deep into the mountain while he mounts a doomed rescue attempt for the captured Drizzt. Pwent insists that the King's place is with his people, and that he must let Pwent take his place. Several former members of the Gutbuster Brigade volunteer to stand beside Pwent, and Bruenor, reluctantly, agrees. Before the rescue attempt can be mounted, though, the devils launch a full-scale assault, catching the dwarves unprepared.
The rejuvenated Pwent, along with the Gutbuster Brigade and mighty Wulfgar, fight a desperate bloody battle to push the devils back, so that the King might escape with what remains of his people. It's a spectacular, bloody mess to be sung of for ages to come, Pwent and his Gutbusters surrounded by the shredded remains of the demons fool enough to get within his reach. Just before being completely buried beneath the swarms of hellspawn, Pwent sees Drizzt Do'urden fighting to get to Bruenor. With a roar and a shake that practically blows apart the demons covering him, Pwent charges forward and clears the path for Drizzt to get to Bruenor before going down for the last time. His last sight is of Drizzt's flashing swords cutting down the demons attacking the Battlehammer ruler.
He awakens in Clangeddin's hall, content that he died the best death a warrior could, fighting for his King and friend, although he regrets not living to know the ultimate fate of Bruenor or the rest of his people. But the Wyrmslayer, impressed at Thibbledorf's ferocity, tenacity, and above all, his supreme loyalty, offers him one more chance - to return to Toril as his Chosen and help restore balance to the plane. Pwent leaps at the chance, literally, and the God of Battles makes good on his word.
Naturally, the actual telling of this story will involve a lot more comedy (this is Pwent, after all), not to mention actual storytelling instead of just bare bones facts. But that should let you know what I have in mind, in case it doesn't come to terms with your ideas for what Drizzt was up to.
Edit: Good Gods, that's just the gist? That's like a page and a half of text. Yeesh, when I start writing, I totally lose track of how much detail I'm throwing in. Let's do a condensed version in case you don't want to sift through that giant thing for references to Drizzt.
Rejuvenated, Pwent returns, arriving while Drizzt is captured and Bruenor is plotting a rescue attempt. Before they can mount the rescue, the demons attack all out, and Pwent fights bravely but is about to go down when he sees Drizzt fighting his way through to Bruenor. Pwent surges up with the last of his strength and clears the way for the mighty drow to get to the dwarf king before going down for the last time. He wakes up in Clangeddin's hall, and is offered the chance to be the chosen of the dwarven God of Battles.
There we go, way more succinct.

So many Macguffin's running around, you'd think that there was a clan gathering or something...LOL
I did have a curious question though. Did anyone pitch in on the Realm Works kickstarter? I'm hoping that it works as advertised. I really wouldn't mind putting my group into that. Just curious.
Agh, I just discovered it this morning after the drive closed. I was pretty irritated that I couldn't donate, actually.
Ynaeve Amryln |
One of the things I forgot when I was looking at the continuous protection from evil is that just using a spell as the primary determination from price is not valid. The effects of the spell must sometimes be used to determine price.
Google True Strike enchantment. It is a first level spell that gives +20 to an attack roll. Correct enchantment would be to determine the cost of adding +20 as an armor bonus, for a cost of 20x20x1000=400,000 gold.
So too, protection from evil gives a +2 armor bonus ($4000), +2 resistance bonus ($4000), and some other abilities. Note that a ring of protection +2, and a cloak of resistance +2 won't stack with this spell anyway (deflection armor and resistance bonus don't stack).
As for Ynaeve, I believe I have her done and ready. I'll probably continue to tinker with her background. I would prefer having Mystra as her deity, but if another gets in with that choice, I have selected a second selection. And I have added, and will continue to add background that will easily work with either.
Ynaeve is a lifelong student of magic and history (magical). Feel free to take a look and make any comments or suggestions, I am open to other's viewpoints. And I would love to develop some backstory with anyone else if we can find points in our timelines where we would be together.
Imagine what the world would be like (other than the rampaging demons and devils) with bards being the only source of cure light wounds. Consider that the world generally doesn't have doctor's as we think of them, especially a magic heavy world like Faerun, where divine casters were everywhere. Thirty three years with only a few cure spells scattered around taverns...
I believe that wizards are supposed to be able to do this to some extent as there is plenty of info on them creating spells. Though for balance I think a spell that effectively duplicates a spell on another list should be a level higher for the wizard.
For the DM, I don't necessarily want to use it for my character personally (running out of money), but any problems with having her background include development of other arcane versions of some of the basic divine spells?
Second level cure light wounds, lesser restoration at 3rd, purify food and drink at 1st, remove sickness at 2nd. etc. I'm thinking only of some of the straight up healing type spells of low levels.

A command-activated Protection from Evil item would be 1,800 (arguably 3,600).
Charges/day would be multiplied by x/5.
50 charges would be 1/2 price.
A use-activated would be 4,000 (minute duration multiplies by 2).
Duration 1 minute.
I think, after a closer look, 5,500 gp would be a proper price, not considering the campaign. 12,000 gp might be appropriate, considering that.
- Known values total 6,000.
- Completely variable increases include the warding vs evil summons, the reroll vs compulsion.
- Partially known increase is the 4,000 gp +2 morale bonus to the reroll.
- Variable deduction of working against evil only. Possibly 1/2 off.
A shining wayfinder is an example of a item with a raw Protection from Evil effect. It is 2,000 gp, casts it once a day and has other effects, suggesting a low cost for the spell effect. I think the wayfinders are really good buys, so wouldn't use it as a baseline for protection from evil cost, though if 800 gp were the portion toward protection, it suggests a 4,000 base price for the spell.
A Knight's Pennon (honor) takes up no slot also gives a raw protection from evil. It comes from the APG. It costs 2,200 gp and can be used once/day. This suggests the price for a protection from evil constant effect should be 5,500 gp.
- 2,200 base price
- Multiplied by 2 for being slotless
- Divided by 5 for 1 charge/day
- 2,200 / 2 * 5 = 5,500 gp
- Having to be attached to something from which it can be mounted upon gives no deduction to the cost, most slotless items have some function like this.
It is subject to GM approval anyway, and I think a price tag under 6,000 is fair for most games. This could be the type of environment that Protection from Evil is harder to use. Or simply, if all or most of the baddies are evil, something like this would be worth more. 12,000 ought to be the cap, at which point someone would be getting it only to save a cape/ring slot or for the re-roll for saves vs compulsion... which is what I'd get it for.
By the way, I listen to epic music found on YouTube when writing or coming up with stuff for my own game I GM. Some of my favorites come from the linked channel, The Prime Cronus.
Ynaeve Amryln |
doh, just noticed I said armor bonus instead of attack bonus.
@Nightskies It looks like you are trying to base price on the spell, not the effects of the spell, which is what the GM referenced regarding a post I made earlier.
All said, a wand would be pretty cheap, usable more than once a day, and for every 50 charges you want, it's only 750 gold. Considering the average pbp, 2 or 3 wands would probably last the average player's life span.
