[pbp] Rise of the Runelords - Subplot (Scrimshaw)

Game Master RyanH

There are times, sometimes days in Sandpoint where the party is off doing their own thing. Site seeing, resting, in Arandor's case incessant research. Shortly after the incident at the Glassworks
Scrimshaw is sitting alone in the Rusty Dragon taking in the scene, and having a snack.

Scrimshaw sees a well dressed man at a table with two women. He is trying to impress them. Spending more money than necessary on drinks and food for the table and basically flashing coin and gems. Scrimshaw recognizes the women as members of the local Sczarni criminals. The man however seems to be unaware, a traveler from out of town. Scrimshaw sees him place his coins in a rather easily accessible belt pouch, and he gets up. One of the women leaning on either arm and he heads out of the rusty dragon.

I go and follow him sneaking behind home staying about 10 ft behind him

Go ahead and do a stealth check ... Jerrod can show you how I do a dice roll on here.

The three walk down market street and into the open square (35), heading towards Gaffer's walk along the water.

The bag of coins is calling out to Scrimshaw ... jingling ... looking heavy.

stealth: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

I keep out my dagger just in case of anyone who may be attempting to attack me. I also looking around at my surroundings to make sure that no one is watching me. Meda-Gameing would I have to roll a perception check.

Meta ... You could always throw one in.

Scrimshw is hiding very well, she could probably get as close to them as she wanted. They are pretty focused on each other.

The trio crosses the square ...

I stay close to the buildings and cross the square and following the people. I keep my dagger at the ready. I also stay 5ft away from the people and keep getting closer and closer trying to keep a good distance so that I can steal the money.
Has he been drinking a little so that a little slip and make it so that I can pull out the money quickly?

They have been drinking, and again, are intent on each other. You feel the women, being tied to the crime group, are likely leading him to get robbed anyway.

To pick a pocket you must do a slight of hand check and score a 20 or greater. That means you got it.

The person you are stealing from rolls a perception and if he beats your roll, he saw that you took it!

You are currently at a +5 in Sleight of Hand skill, but you also are now level 2, so you could throw another score in there.

I will give you a +3 do to their distraction.

So, roll Sleight of Hand!

Slight of hand: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 I didn't add the +3
I get close and try to pick pocket the guy and I slip back quickly into the darkness.

Luckily skill checks don't have critical hits and misses.

perception: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (14) - 5 = 9

Also lucky he was distracted and drinking!

Scrimshaw bumps into him as she tries to get the pouch, he quickly looks around, but Scrimshaw had already used her stealth to jump behind a few crates of rotten vegetables.

The three end up walking along the docks towards the southeast. Scrimshaw hears them talking about "Fatman's Feedbag". knowledge Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 ... Scrimshaw knows this as a local tavern where bar fights are common. She typically avoided the place.

Do I happen to know which bar that is? I keep following and in about 2 minuets I will go and try to pickpocket him again

Skrimsha knows the bar it's 42 on the map of Sandpoint.

It's a little less than two minutes, but they are approaching the Feedbag and Scrimshaw may not have another chance ... she should try again. (How exactly does she plan to do it?)

Describe what you do and make a Sleight of Hand check.

The guy's secret perception roll:

Perception: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (4) - 5 = -1

I quickly sneak up and grab the bag then sneak into the shadows.
Slight of hand: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

There we go ... Scrimshaw just grabs it?

Luckily it was not tied, the top of the bag just went behind and over his belt, so it slips out. He made no indication that he noticed.

The bag is pretty heavy. It is difficult to keep it from jingling. They are close to reaching the Fatman's Feedbag ...

I check how much money is in the bag while keeping hidden then I will go back to the rusty dragon and sleep keeping in the shadows. When I get to the rusty dragon I go up to my room and place the money under my pillow and sleep on it keeping one eye open all night. (Not literally just as a idiom I am just staying awake and asleep.

You see quite a few coins, some gems and a rolled up piece of parchment.

When you get to your room you count out ...

31 Gold
22 Silver
11 Platinum
5 small gems in a pouch

The parchment reads ...

I hide the money under my pillow and go to sleep. I try to sleep very light so that if anyone will try to steal the money that I will be ready, I keep my dagger out so that I can be ready. In the morning I go and eat breakfast, then I go to the feed bag and question them about the man that came in last night with two women that were drunk.

Skrimsha asks the bar keep about the man that came in with the two women. The bar keep replies with a very loud voice, "A man that came in with two women? Hmmm ... please jog my memory ... a man came in with two women ... I don't know ... what interest do you have in the man?"

Skrimshaw's Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Skrimshaw noted that the barkeep spoke up to get the attention of two Scarzi ruffians that were standing in the back of the bar. You see them moving towards the front counter where you are.

I start running away from the ruffians heading to The Rusty Dragon. Then when I get there I run up to my room and keep them away. Then I go down to Ameco and describe the man to Ameco.

Skrimsha barely makes it through the front door as a couple of thugs are reaching for her. She hears one cursing at her and to her great dismay, she is sickened to hear someone saying, " ... I've seen that little lizard around town ... shouldn't be too hard to find ..."

Skrimsha runs as fast as she can, What was I thinking!, over and over she thinks that.

She gets to the Rusty Dragon, hoping to talk to Ameiko ... but right as she's walking in the Dwarven Paladin, Behnin, gruffly says, "Good, you're here, we're going to go inspect the caverns below the glassworks.", as he and the rest of the party is walking out the front door of the Inn.

Skrimshaw is apprehensive to leave her stolen loot, relatively unsecured, in the Rusty Dragon room. But the group seems determined as they leave and she does not want to let on that there's anything special in her room, so she quickly follows the them.

After this, the activities of last game night happened, and you are now all in the weird floaty-sphere room
