"Nice finish, Anevia. That could have gone very poorly without your aid. Don't worry about the folks on the ground - they will come to. I know this sort of magic well." Max takes a look at the wizardly dwarf for interesting magic, but he's unable to make heads or tails of most of it.

"This one is a potion of Invisibility," he remarks. "I confess to being ignorant regarding the remainder."

Dumb question -- can Max use the Identify spell on an item he's already attempted to identify, or does he have to wait a day?

City Map Current Location Map Loot Sheet

Tina, a round is only 6 seconds. So Kosz and Deia will be up and running as if nothing happened in less than a minute. So they'll pretty much wake up as soon as combat has ended.

Max, the retry entry for Spellcraft says that failing to identify an item makes you wait a day to try again, regardless of if you were using the Identify spell or Detect Magic. Identify says that it functions as Detect Magic, so you've got to wait until the next day to try again.

Tina:
You're able to stabilize the dwarf, though he seemed precipitously close to death by the time you got to him.

When you're ready to move on:
As you emerge from the short passage that the dwarf attacked you from, your senses are assaulted from every angle. The horrid stench of offal and decaying flesh fill your nose and you find a gruesome sight. On the back wall near the dwarf's camp are cages filled with darkmantles and rats that have been dissected, stitched together, and undergone various 'procedures.' Many of them are some twisted amalgam of rat and darkmantle flesh, and most are dead or dying. What few remain alive let out pained noises as you approach.

The dwarf's camp is very spartan otherwise. It consists of little more than a tattered bedroll and a fire pit. A sack of preserved meats and fruit(6 rations) sits beside the bedroll along with a small, well-worn book and tiny marble statuette of a man holding a spear. Pinned to the sack is a small brooch in the shape of a bat perched atop a mushroom.

Reading the book:
On reading the book you're greeted with a sensible journal that steadily progresses into paranoid rambling. The dwarf, who increasingly refers to himself in the third-person as Millorn, was apparently chased from Kenabres a few years ago for trying to 'improve' the crusaders. While his 'improvements' aren't detailed in the early pages of the book, he does write of skin grafts and 'fixing the flaws of humanity.'

In the later pages he writes of crusaders watching him in the tunnels, laughing at his failures and waiting for him to sleep so that they can torture him. His descriptions of his experiments also become increasingly graphic and detailed. Accompanying these details are crudely drawn diagrams showing exactly how to reproduce them and formulae that seem to be what he based his experiments on.

Appraise DC 15:
The statuette appears badly chipped, but it could probably fetch a return of around 45gp.

The brooch is made from gold, but isn't really of note in any fashion. It could be sold for around 100gp.

Appraise DC 20:
The statuette, though appearing badly chipped, is actually in fairly decent condition and of good craftsmanship. You're able to estimate its value at around 75gp.

The brooch is made of fine gold, and the bat's eyes both house tiny amethyst gemstones. Though not particularly special, the unique design and the skill that would be required to place the gems into the eyes may cause it to fetch a higher price of around 200gp.

Spellcraft DC 22 OR Read Magic spell:
The book, which at first glance seems to be the rambling journal of a madman, is actually the dwarf's spellbook. Hidden within his writings and drawings of his experiments are the following spells:
0 - Acid Splash, Detect Magic, Ghost Sound, and Read Magic
1 - Color Spray, Detect Secret Doors, Grease, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Shocking Grasp, Silent Image,
2 - Blur, Fog Cloud, Invisibility, Levitate, Resist Energy

Ok, so, as the thread title says I'm a relatively noobish GM. A good decade or so back, when 3rd edition was new, I was playing in high school and I ran a couple homebrewed, railroady, overpowered, monty haul type games with friends, but since then I've been pretty well dormant for both playing and GMing. My last real game, until a PbP this year, was around 2006 if that says anything. I made an attempt to run my first Pathfinder campaign at the start of this year with a local group, but it fell apart very quickly due to some personal issues between a husband and wife team of players spilling over into the game and making for a very hostile atmosphere. And since they made up half of the group, well...

But now I've discovered PbP and can play again without having to worry near as much about schedules and all the other hassles of meeting in person! It's not exactly a perfect replacement for a real-life game, but it scratches the itch well enough. And because of that, I've decided that I want to try my hand at actually running a published adventure, which is something I've never done before, as well as running a PbP, which is also something I'm new at. And to make this a complete leap of faith, and to just dive headfirst into what I hope isn't the shallow end, I'm wanting to make it my first Mythic campaign as well. Sounds like I'm setting myself up to fail, right? Well, that may very well happen, but I'm hoping that since I'm running an AP rather than homebrew that the chances will be at least slightly lower.

Whew, got the majority of the introduction out of the way. Or at least I think I did. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. As it is, I'm going to go on to info about the game itself.

I'm wanting to run Wrath of the Righteous, as the thread title says, and I'm looking for 4 people who want to put up with my inexperience and ineptitude as I get into the swing of things and get my sea-legs, so to speak. I would heartily recommend that everyone read(or at least skim) the Wrath of the Righteous Player's Guide, since it's free, it's short, and it's all about the AP I'm wanting to run. So it just seems like a good idea to read it, you know? I don't really care what each person's experience level with the game is, because everyone's new at some point and if you're giving me a chance I can give you one too. The only thing I want is for you to actually stick around and play if you get picked. I'm expecting(hoping) this game to last until at least late January-early February, since that's how long it's going to take the AP to finish hitting the shelves. If we end up rushing through a book before the next one gets released, we'll do some PC downtime or something. I don't know what exactly, but we'll figure it out if that happens.

For character creation -

  • 20pt buy
  • Any Core race or Featured race from ARG(no Uncommon races)
  • Any class, but be advised that the only firearms available will be Early Firearms unless you specifically craft them yourself.
  • No stat below 7 AFTER racial modifiers.
  • No evil characters
  • 1 trait + 1 Campaign trait(found in Player's Guide)
  • Give me at least a paragraph of character history, and explain why you're in Kenabres and are basically on the front lines of the Worldwound.
  • No third-party products.

Recruitment will close on September 25th. I will both announce and PM who I have chosen in the days following that. Gameplay will hopefully start up between September 30th and October 4th. For players who have been picked, I'd prefer daily posts, but I know it can't always happen that way so I want to see a minimum of 1 post every 3 days. Posts do not have to be long or expository, but it will make for a better game if you have at least something more than curt descriptions of your action and a few rolls.

If I've left anything out, or if you have any questions at all, feel free to speak up and ask questions. I'm open to everything at this point. TL;DR - Bolded items are important.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Interested.

BTW ... I read elsewhere on the forums that at a post a day you can expect an AP to take 2-3 years, so don't be disappointed when it seems to be going slow.

Well, I don't think I'll be disappointed if it feels like it's running slow. I don't know how long it takes to run an AP even in an in-person game, so I'm just throwing numbers out for that. I'm just hoping I don't make the thing crash and burn early on because that would suck badly.

I'd like to submit Jens Varmodsson for your consideration. I've also submitted him to another WotR recruitment, but it seems to be a pretty popular AP, so I doubt he'd be picked for both - please consider him as much as you would any other character! Ulfen cavalier, heading into the Guardian mythic path. Full crunch and backstory are in the profile. He's currently at 15 point-buy; if selected, I'll bump him up to 20. Also, I can post at least once a day about 95% of the time.

Interested!

Dark Archive

Interested.

Re-submitting Aaliyah for this one. Currently at 15 points, can go up to 20 easily.

Likewise Michael Carenae, willing to give it another shot. Would be going for the Marshal path, Mythicwise. Build is currently a 15-point one; I'll redo that when I get to a PC I can run herolab on.

Seeing a lot of familiar faces here already; good luck one and all again.

Dark Archive

Interested in the AP as a witch.

Will fill in the rest tonight.

I've no doubt you'll find many submissions long before the September 25 deadline!

Here's my submission, updated to a 20 pt build. Do you allow drawbacks in exchange for an extra trait? This build assumes so, but I can adjust it as needed. He is intended to be an Archmage.

So many familiar faces... I hope we all have better luck this time around! :P

I will submit Thomas Vinland, shield of Desna. A shield (eventually tower shield) cleric going the guardian path. Good luck to everyone, especially all the names I recognize from the last WotR Recruitment.

While I figure there's a lot of interest in Wrath of the Righteous, I'm kinda surprised to see as much initial interest in my particular game as there is already. I figured that a lot of people would avoid it because I readily admitted that this was a game of firsts for me. First PbP and first AP. Technically first mythic as well, but that's probably true for most people.

On the somewhat related note of firsts, has anyone here used Roll20 with the interactive maps included in the AP subscription before? I was thinking of using Roll20 for handling mapping duties, but I don't have any experience with it aside from a few short tinkering sessions. I didn't even think of trying an existing map with it.

Working on Silvati Carmusa, a Varisian Boreal Sorcerer for submission, should be able to post later today.

I would like to submit Dorotea. She's currently stated out for 15 points, but adjusting up to 20 would be fairly simple.

I use Roll20 for my face-to-face gaming. I project the map onto the table and use real miniatures. Roll20 allows me to use dynamic lighting (place a torch and it can show you just that light radius, blocked by walls etc). Couple images here on my blog ...

The main thing is that you need to get the image out and sized right ... if your scale in Roll20 is 70 pixels per inch and your image/map is 10 squares you need to make sure the image size is 700pixels so all the lines match up and the scale is right. This is a little time consuming but worth it in that the players actually get to see the professionally drawn map (and the dynamic lighting is awesome). I think I use the interactive map, turn off DM secrets, and then screen capture it trying to get an even number of squares in all directions. Then I load into photoshop (or iPhoto, or any image editor) and resize so pixels = 70 x number of squares. It's actually not too bad.

For dynamic lighting you need to add in the walls (draw lines on the map once it is in Roll20) then it knows where light is being blocked. I draw black lines for walls, then do red lines where the doors are (so I can quickly grab and move the doors to allow light to pour in. (players don't see the lines.) Make sure all your lines overlap so that light does not leak through.

There is also fog of war (cover/uncover what you want players to see.) In addition to Dynamic Lighting. You need to do this if you have light sources on the map (like torches on the walls ... that, or you need to change the settings on each torch to say when a player can/can't see it.)

I have only used this when players and GM are all there at the same time (Face-to-Face or live online game.) I DO NOT know if a player will be able to login and see your map if you are not logged in and active.

For testing have two browsers open (say one in firefox and one in safari/opera/IE) ... log in as GM in one and a player in the other. Then you can see player view while still logged in as GM.

Here is another potential mapping solution that may be even better for the PbP crowed. Really the only features you need are the map, and asynchronous access. Given being able to access this at different times this would be the coolest PbP solution (there is a sample currently available). Check it out ... Virtual table top Kickstarter

Edit: While they probably can't log in while you are offline you could definitely set up the tokens and such yourself and then provide a link to the static screenshot/image of the map for players to reference.

Isaac is on 15 point, but upping it to 20 would be nothing big. He's a bard, but re-flavored so that, instead of performing, he gives battlefield orders to the same effect. No mechanical difference, just fluff. I'd be on the marshal mythic path, and serve as the party face/buffer for the most part. Stats and background are in the alias.

This is the owner of Isaac right up there. I have a bit of PbP GM experience and I'd love to help out any way I can. We need more of you in this world. I'm not bad at maps (I use mapTools), and I can handle some bookkeeping as a player, too, if you need it.

EDIT: P.S. I would insist on a post a day if I were you. I've found that the number one thing that determines whether or not a PbP lives or dies is how often a new post comes up. If your players check every 4 hours and time after time there are no updates from you or any other players, they'll check less and less, and eventually you'll just lose steam and it'll die. Not always, but that's my experience as a GM and player. The most posts the better.

Submitting Lisasha, currently set up for 15 but fairly easy to blah blah blah.

Maximillian Akorius wrote:

I would prefer to avoid drawbacks. My reason is that traits are basically a free bonus at level 1, and most people pick the ones that are the least situational for them. But the drawbacks, on the whole, seem even more situational to me than the traits are. So you're trading one highly situational penalty for another not-as-situational bonus. This isn't limited to just Pathfinder's traits/drawbacks system either. My first experience with it was with World of Darkness LARP's system, and it felt much the same way. It just doesn't feel like an even trade to me. Sorry.

I'm looking over the current submissions tonight. So far, I've probably had more tabs open at once to the PRD and d20pfsrd than I've had open in a long time. I am not familiar at all with most of the archetypes, especially ones not listed in the official PRD, so it's been a little bit of a learning experience.

On another note, I think I should explain a little bit about how I plan to handle certain aspects of the game. I'm not going to be a stickler about encumbrance, food, and water. What I mean by that is that I'm going to assume that you guys won't attempt to stuff 3 suits of full plate into a backpack and expect to get away with it. Magic items that can store items, such as the handy haversack or bag of holding, will tend to follow this rule as well. It makes them more powerful, because I'm probably going to end up letting you put more in it than what's allowed, but I don't really think it's going to be that much of an unbalancing factor. For food and water, I'll assume that your characters are at least somewhat self sufficient in the field, and in town you're not willingly starving yourselves.

For combat, what I'm thinking I'll try is what the GM of the PbP I'm currently playing in is doing. Rather than have people post their actions in initiative order and wait for each person to make their appearance, I'll have each of you post your actions for that round whenever you decide to visit the boards. Then I'll sort things out by initiative order once everyone has posted. If another player's actions invalidate yours then I will try to follow your intent as best as possible. Alternately, you could post your actions as an "If this happens, then I do..." and give multiple courses of action. The discussion section is always open for pre-planning maneuvers.

As far as posting requirements, as I said I would really prefer a daily post from everyone, but I'm not going to make it a strict requirement. I know things can come up, and I like to be flexible about things like that. If people post every day then yes, the game probably will go better than if people are just posting once every 3 days. So posting frequency will actually act as a way for me to gauge how well I'm doing as a GM. If I keep everyone coming back daily, then I'll take it as doing well. If no one posts except for the bare minimum, then I'll take it that I'm failing.

And again, feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability. I don't know what all I'm leaving out of the discussion here that players want/need to know.

Just to help you out, Aaliyah is a Dawnflower Dervish, but due to copyright issues it's listed as "Dervish of Dawn" on d20pfsrd.com. Original source is Inner Sea Magic, if you've got that.

One other thing: I'm starting a trip to Japan this Friday. While I'll have internet via a phone, complicated posts (including dice) are likely to be out. Probably not an issue at first level, but just in case there's an "actions in order of priority" tab on my character just in case something goes wrong and I'm out of touch.

I would like to submit Kosz Trumpeter for your consideration. He has been in two Worldwound PbP now and both have folded very fast. Here's hoping third time's a charm.

Hello to all of my former party members. Good to see you again.

Interested! I'll work up a character tomorrow.

Yea, I found the Dervish of Dawn on there and figured it out from the copyright/legal note on d20pfsrd.

I really, really wish that Paizo would include all the crunch stuff from the campaign books and various splatbooks to their PRD since the numbers are technically OGL content from what I understand. I kinda understand why they don't do it, but I still wish they would. Thankfully d20pfsrd is there to do it for us folks that can't buy all the books.

Also, phone posting on here sucks in general, but is especially bad for PbP, with all the bbcode notation you've got to do. I was on vacation a couple weeks ago and was in much the same situation.

Yeah. I've managed before, and a first level char is straightforward enough to make decisions about. I'm just saying, I think I can manage for the most part, just likely to be a few days where I'm out of touch. And I've got the "In Case of emergency" spoiler if that doesn't work.

I really pity the PFS GM I have for my 11th level sorc right now. ^^;

Kosz, unless I'm mistaken you can't stack the Warrior of the Holy Light and Oathbound archetypes. Oathbound modifies your spellcasting, while Warrior of the Holy Light completely removes it.

The Unruly GM wrote:

You took my by surprise with that. I looked it up and I can see how that is probably the case. I would actually be losing that extra spell and there is no benefit of the oath before 8th level, but I can drop the oath.

Kel was originally made for another WotR game, and actually made it through recruitment, but the game was DOA (same game Kosz and Aaliyah were originally in, actually).

He's fully fleshed out and ready to go. I'd love to have a chance to play him.

Mechanically, he's a Teifling Fighter focusing on guarding other characters. Eventually I plan on having him become a Paladin.

Thematically, he's trying to find redemption for himself and the celestial that is now bound to him.

The details are in the profile. Please let me know what you think.

The Unruly GM wrote:

I totally get that. The Nervous trait isn't a total freebie, but it's still pretty darn situational. I switched it around to take the Additional Traits feat instead. That gives him a chance to also get the Guidance of Aroden, which I think rather fits the character.

I think you can run Roll20 without having to be logged in all the time. But a fair number of people can't access it from work.

Kel the Guardsman wrote:

Ahem. Forgetting someone...? :P

Well, this seems to be a pretty damn popular AP, eh? I see people here who've applied for three games, like myself.

Kosz - I can see where that would catch you by surprise a little bit. While in the future I may allow those two archetypes to stack, since the only conflict was actually a loss of an ability, I'm going to disallow it for this game. Sorry.

Kel - I can't find the Survived a Mana Storm trait over on d20pfsrd. Also, traits should be 1 + a campaign trait.

Max - Yea, I just realized that I can't access Roll20 from work myself. So I guess that's pretty much out of the question now. Stupid being stuck on WinXP and stuck with IE8 and an outdated version of Chrome that they have literally disabled the option to update. Because apparently we're running a piece of software that was written solely for this version of Chrome and that doesn't work at all on any others. It's like IE6 all over again!

Jens - And now I don't know if I want any of you people! Three games you've all applied to and all three have died? I'm starting to see a pattern here...

Let me clarify. Aaliyah, Kel, Kosz, and myself (with two others) were in a game that burned out in the first combat due to the GM not having the time to run it the way he wanted. We haven't been in 3 games; I've applied for two others that are currently in recruitment, and I was simply noting that couple of the others have done so, too. Please don't panic!

*opens mouth, attempts to remove foot*

No problem removing the oath for the character.

To further clarify, I was in a Worldwound campaign about a year and a half ago, before there was a Wrath of the Righteous AP, that died from GM neglect. Then I was in the above game that Jens described.

Right. Was accepted to another one but. . . well, I found some of the other selections. . . I'm trying to find a word that's acceptable in a public venue. . . odd? Didn't feel like trying to deal with them especially with somewhat limited posting coming up. Once a day I can handle, riding herd on someone who insists on posting dumb things every hour no.

Lian is a bastard child of human "crusader" and an elven cleric of Calistria. His father took him at a younger age when his mother decided to return to Kyonin, believing the lad to be in good hands.
He wasn't.
His father was secretly a cultist, and quickly offered his son up to sacrifice under the guise of "taking him out for his first kill". The ritual was painful, humiliating, but it did something to him. He saw a vision of a beautiful city, and a golden key before him. His mental self grasped the key, and he awoke as the ritual's energy began to take. With the fury of the Abyss infusing his divine call to Abadar, he broke free of his bonds, grabbed a gift his mother had given his father, a rare Elven Curve Blade, and slew the cultists before they knew what got them.
He was only 13 at the time.
Now a young man, and having trained hard to bring the fight to the Demon his father called master, Lian trained hard with the Elven Curve Blade and heavy armor. The path of Paladinhood was to narrow for him. No, he will seek vengeance his own way.

My comment about failed campaigns was a joke. I've got no room to talk on that front. I've been in 3 and only one has actually lasted for more than a couple weeks. One failed to launch completely immediately after recruitment ended(GM went on vacation and never came back) and the other failed when the GM decided he wanted to GM another game instead.

Aaliyah - So you were accepted elsewhere, but turned it down?

Seth - You forgot to include skill ranks in that posting. All you've got is # for every skill. And if I may make a comment, silver isn't good against demons but cold iron is. I don't think those silver weapon blanches will be much help.

Admittedly, yes. I've had enough bad experiences that I could see where things were going and decided I'd rather not waste the energy. If you want more details, I'll PM. Some of what I would have to say on the topic isn't fit for a public discussion.

Nope, don't care to pry. I was just making sure I understood the post correctly.

I know I've applied to several WotR campaigns that are currently recruiting. I also applied for the campaign that Aaliyah was accepted into but turned down after character selection.

It can be difficult to get accepted into a campaign for a new AP, and WotR seems to be drawing a lot of attention.

Unruly would you be opposed to a second character submission? As much as I like Thomas, there are a lot of Guardian Path people here already, and honestly some of their characters I think are a bit better than Thomas.

I was thinking a Half-Orc ranged Inquisitor that would end up with some levels in Rouge as well.

Go for it. It's still early in recruitment after all.

I am submitting Tikhon Zolnerowich, former member of the Imperial Army of Molthune.

He will be champion path.

I will increase his Str to 16 and Cha to 14 if he is picked.

Also, how much gold do you want us each to have? I did not see that anywhere in your posts.

Here's the gist of why he's in Kenabres:

Tikhon wrote:

For ease of reading, I will explain why he is in Kenabres here.

Quite simply, he is joining in at the suggestion of his superiors in the Imperial Army of Molthune.
They want a bit of a name there, and figure sending somebody who is good at their job is the best way to go.

His driving goal is to slay demons and gain renown for himself. A bit of the renown goes to his own country, but mostly he is there to gain it for himself.

A more detailed backstory is located in his character profile.

For your convenience, a link to the Fell Rider archetype:
Hobgoblin page, about a third of the way down.

I would like to submit Kyra Banior, Half-Orc inquisitor of Desna who will later take some levels in rouge if all goes well. She uses the Trickster Path.

Her Stats are currently 15 point buy. He 20 point Buy stats are as follows
STR:14 DEX:18 CON:12 INT:10 WIS:14 CAR:8

I would like to submit Nossac Elf Paladin (Divine Hunter) Of Elastril (He is 15 pt. ATM but I will bump him up to 20 if accepted as well as put more info into the meta details of the character).

This is my first foray into PbP, so this will be a learning experience for me.

Hi Jens! Didn't see you the first time I posted. :)

I have Diurn Selestro here.

he made level 2 in a cauldron campaign that is stalled.

You can check out my posting history from this alias or my lizardman paladin that is currently level 6 in age of worms.

Diurn plans to be the straight cleric that will mix it up in melee as a last resort. He is a 15pt buy now. He would be +2 WIS and -1 DEX to change to 20 from his current stats.
