Arathorn Vallar |
Figured as much and assuming my last attack hit Teag right.
Arathorn moves a little more to the right to maintain a clear line to attack Teag while changing Atticus's aspect to stag before shouting out.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Give up Teag you aren't getting away this time.
Zaratina |
Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Zaratina slips on the ground for a moment before regaining her footing. She steps out of the greased patch and moves around Teag to flank him with the wolf.
If his scepter counts as a weapon or he has Improved Unarmed Attack or a boot knife, she provokes an AOO.
She tries to stab him with her trident while the wolf distracts him.
Trident: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
P: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Figured as much and assuming my last attack hit Teag right.
Unless you have some sort of skill trick, diplomacy (and intimidate and bluff too) usually takes a minimum of a full minute to use to change a person's attitude significantly or get them to comply with your wishes. Teag isn't going to listen when it is obvious to him he is about to be attacked. That and characters can't ready an action and take what amounts to a standard (or in this case a minute or two of) action in the same round. I meant to mention that all earlier, but the wolf kinda through me.
Folloch Teag |
Arathorn's arrow goes way wide. On top of everything else, Arathorn takes a -4 for firing at a target in melee.
Teag kicks angrily at the wolf who finds some leg under the thick robes and through his magically armored aura. "Away you cur!"
Zaratina slips on the ground for a moment before regaining her footing. She steps out of the greased patch and moves around Teag to flank him with the wolf.
If his scepter counts as a weapon or he has Improved Unarmed Attack or a boot knife, she provokes an AOO.
In the hand without the scroll (which he drops as a free action), Teag brandishes a big wavy knife.
"And you as well!"
wavy dagger v Zaratina (AoO, inspired): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 4 + 1 = 18 damage: 1d4 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 + 1 = 4
Despite the knife wound to her arm, Zaratina still manages to stab the man with her trident. He screams.
Arathorn Vallar |
That works and forgot that Zaratina would have closed before I could get my shot off; reason I didn't take the -4 before for the melee. Also, thanks for letting me know that is one of the aspects that I am still learning as far as combat goes with some of the more dynamic aspects other than move/attack.

Actually, I kinda take the -4 back. Since we are using block initiative (instead of going in strict order) it is assumed that the party operates in the most useful tactical order during their turn, almost regardless of posting order (sometimes though that can be important as well). Speaking of which, did Atticus want to try and trip Teag? It's free with a successful bite and is usually included with the other dice rolls after the attack and damage rolls.
Hallimir Duskrin |
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Hallimir slips for a moment on the unexpected grease, but manages to remain standing, stepping out of the affected area. "Nice try, Teag, but a coward's trick like that will not hinder us"
Hallimir moves up to Teag with his blade drawn and strikes at the Mayor's extended arm whilst he stabs at Zaratina.
Attack w ECB: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 Critical Threat
Confirm?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 sadly not
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Zaratina |
In the hand without the scroll (which he drops as a free action), Teag brandishes a big wavy knife.
How so?
2: 5-foot Step, Standard (Use Scroll)
Sure, he could have dropped the scroll and drawn a dagger during his last action, but he didn't as far as I can read.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Action economy: Before the party arrives (technically before rounds begin): Try rod (standard), toss it aside when it doesn't work (free). Grab scroll (move). Round 1. Step back 5-feet (draw weapon while he does so) (move), use scroll (standard), drop scroll (free). I didn't have my NPC Codex with me and didn't have time to look his stats up before posting (I couldn't remember what weapon he had), but did want him to be able to hit people while they were possibly down in the grease (that's what villains do after all), but never got back to the post. Anyhow, when you listed all the things that he could do you I figured that you had figured that's what happened and so smack. However there's a way to avoid all this: "BLANE!"
"I spy with my little eye something that begins with 'j'!" Blane says squinting at Teag. Evil Eye v Atk.
Folloch Teag |
The jerk's Will save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Now he misses, and Zaratina does not have burden of guilt of helping to strike down an unarmed man on her conscious.
"Curses!" Teag says dramatically as his blade slides wide of Zaratina. Then Hallimir brings his blade to bear and the strangely talented cleric of Razmir topples to the ground. "If- if it weren't you adventurers... and your dog...."
He seems to loose consciousnesses.
Arathorn Vallar |
Atticus come here boy.
Pulls out some jerky from his pouch handing it to him while rubbing behind his ears.
Does he have anything else on him worthwhile since the scepter is a dud now.
May also want to head out before the crowd wonders who threw the fire bomb earlier...assuming it was probably Hallimir.
Blane Bonesnatcher |
blane seeming to snap out of a haze walks over and picks up the sceptor.
dead or not i think this is still what we need. someone wanna carry it as the townsfolk might not like to see us walking off with it.
blane well also rummage through the unconscious guys pockets.
sorry guys im back works been terrible.
Hallimir Duskrin |
Hallimir gives Atticus a quick pat on the head but remains focused on Teag. He walks up and gives the seemingly unconscious man a nudge with his blade.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 is he actually unconscious or just pretending
"There is no use pretending you coward. I told you earlier...I have no interest in you. Jut this scepter, and anything else that may be of use to us."
Hallimir continues to hold his blade at the ready until he is convinced the Ex-mayor poses no further threat.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Teag doesn't seem to be faking.
Blane retrieves the scepter, but the shine has come off of it. Its metal seems cold and gray, and the once sparkling jewels are now nothing more than glass.
Arathorn Vallar |
Is there anything else on him worth taking before we take our leave not sure I want to stick around for his "followers" to regroup.
Turning to Blane
Will go ahead and put it in my pack though not sure it matters at this point.
Hallimir Duskrin |
Teag doesn't seem to be faking.
"hrumph" snorts Hallimir as he realises the man is not faking and sheaths his blade.
Hallimir walks over to the carriage and inspects some of the smaller items.
"Well, if the scepter is no longer worth the price that Ulisha is expecting, perhaps some of these items can make up the difference....and at the very lease, we now have transport."
Hallmir pulls out Ulisha's jornal and peruses the remaining pages.
"It also seems that we have only two more locations to visit, Numeria or Gralton and I believe Numeria is closest"
The World's Most Interesting GM |
The inside of the carriage is crammed full of what looks like stolen goods, everything from nick-knacks, and jewelry, to pieces of furniture. There's no room inside for any passengers leaving space for two up front on the driver's couch.
Stealing items (horses and carriage included) from victims of Teag's magical domination constituents a moral quandary for those party members of a more benevolent nature and might lead to a change in their outlook. Especially after endangering (and perhaps even killing) several of the villagers already. No one in the party knows if anyone has died as no one has been concerned enough to ask after them yet--which is enough to warn a nominally good person that they might not be ('good' that is). Even to folks of a grayer morality this seems a bit beyond the pale--a bit out of balance, and more in line with a selfish or evil outlook, and certainly a more chaotic one. I am therefore bound to warn folks that anymore willful endangerment of innocents will result in possible alignment notations on your chronicle sheets.
This is not really too bad a thing especially if you are still finding your way around your PC's characterization. Maybe the character isn't really interested in being truly neutral. Maybe they are more reckless and therefore chaotic. Or bad actions repel them so much that, to make amends, take a their next level as a paladin. It's all (lawful) good.
Feel free to discuss more on the discussion thread.
Zaratina |
"I'm fairly certain that everything here belongs to the village," Zaratina says. "Looks like he was controlling the people with the scepter. Drained it dry doing so, too."
"Whichever is closest seems reasonable."
Arathorn Vallar |
Will say this much in defense while I don't view the crowd as an enemy I was treating them like a hostile party since they were mind controlled by the priest. Also, Arathorn was concerned about his companions chasing after a "priest" with unknown capabilities/reinforcements. So in his view the best course of action beyond maybe using a create water spell to help contain some of the fire was to remove any chance for further conflict with the "innocent" mob. Just wondering if this would be a valid take to maintain a "good" alignment with maybe some tones of "chaotic."
Wonder if Teag had his daily "sermons" because his control required constant reinforcement?
Looking at Zaratina.
Guess we are walking though wonder if we should leave the "priest" tied up with his "collections" and the scepter as a present and maybe some amends to the town.
Assuming he isn't dead.
Looks at Teag casting Stabilize.
Cant have you dying before you can make your own amends to the townfolk...Though think I will be taking your mask as a reminder.
Hallimir Duskrin |
Hallimir looks abck over at the party, "you are probably right, perhaps we should wait for Teag's spell to wear off and then turn him over to the vill...."
As Hallimir begins to talk about the villagers, his mind flashes back to the memory of him throwing the alchemist fire near the crowd.
"...the villagers, it might be prudent to proceed back to the town square and see if we can help with the wounded if at all possible. It might go a long way towards earning their good graces."
The World's Most Interesting GM |
The town square is in a bit of an uproar. Someone or something has attacked one of the town militiamen, and there are group of people with some serious chemical burns. Many other people are confused as to what they were all doing in the town square to begin with, and everyone seems to be looking for some answers.

You don't have anything to worry about yet, Arathorn, but I did feel the need to remind folks.
Blane Bonesnatcher |
"your leader was a froad. He was useing some sort of magic to control you and steal your riches. We have found him and your goods which we shall return to all of you.
in guessing that we were able to bring the cart back to the town square with us .
Hallimir Duskrin |
Hallimir loads Teag's body onto the driver's couch and leads the horse in the direction of the town square.
As the party enter the town square and attempt to quell the confusion, Hallimir walks over ane climbs up on the stage and begins speaking in as loud and a booming voice as he can muster.
"PEOPLE OF ALLENSTEAD.....you have been victimised and wronged, your town has been charmed and enslaved. Your wealth taken and your freedom removed."
Gesturing over towards the carriage where Teag's unconcious body is resting
"That man....Folloch Teag....is the one responsible. As my collegue here stated, For weeks now, he has been using magic to control you all and steal from you. Do with him as you will
Then Hallimir steps down off the stage and heads over to help those with the burns.
Arathorn Vallar |
Arathorn follows behind the wagon and while Hallimir is speaking; starts going through the crowd attempting to heal any of the wounded and will cast CLW on the worse victim but only have one instance of that left.
Still not fully trusting of this mob but they are innocent and have wounded...Just hope nothing sets them off again.
Assuming I can take 10 for the initial heal attempts and take 20 on the more heavily wounded individuals since we aren't in combat.

Well, there's an unconscious guard with a serious sword wound and dog bite.
Assuming I can take 10 for the initial heal attempts and take 20 on the more heavily wounded individuals since we aren't in combat.
Yep.
The crowd still, a bit dazed and slightly amnesiac about recent events seem amenable, and soon enough a group of children have defaced the big statue of Teag with paint and owner of the VI Inn is inviting everyone back to the ale house for a round on the ex-mayor and to introduce the party to real mayor--Mayor Wilson.
"Hidey-Ho neighbors." he says from beneath a swath of bandages wrapped around his face. "We can't thank you enough for helping free our little town from Teag over there." he says pointing over in the direction of the man, a cluster of locals and the tavern's dart board.
"I believe it was High Senator Marcy who said 'to the victor belong the spoils'. And soshite, watashitachi no chīsana mono mo arimasu." He adds handing a bag full of coin to Blane.
"Now I'm going to go rest after taking just enough time to ingest some delicious willow bark tincture I have stored along with my strawberry preserves."
As he leaves he stops in front of Zaratina and says: "You've got some muscles on you little lady. Later neighbors."
So was it Numeria next? Any specific plans for getting there? Any purchases while you are in the village?
Arathorn Vallar |
After taking care of the wounded Arathorn goes off and spends a little time giving Atticus attention while the rest of the group settles things.
Hope the next one works out better than this last comedy act.
Agreed rations and maybe some more alchemical weapons just in case...Dont think we need much else as a group per say.
Hallimir Duskrin |
Hallimir bows slightly in respect to the mayor "Swift recovery, Mayor Wilson"
Hallimir then turns to the inn keeper and enquires "We are heading to Numeria, would it be possible to acquire a carriage or some horses for the journey? We would obviously pay hansomly to anyone willing to take us there.
Hallimir will restock with rations as required based on how long it will take either on foot or in a carriage....please advise
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Accompanying her notebook entry, Ulisha filled the next several pages with crude maps, complex equations, and further notes. She apparently returned to the Pathfinder’s cave mentioned in her previous entry. By observing the angle of the ridgeline and her current position, she was able to calculate the crash site’s probable location. The last page on the matter includes a detailed map into Numeria with various landmarks and a destination. An addendum written in recent ink warns, “Tread lightly. Numeria remains a mystery to the rest of the world. Those who stay too long draw unwanted attention.”
To find out what your character knows or can find out about Numeria, roll one check (Knowledge (history), Knowledge (local), or Diplomacy (gather information)) and open all that spoilers that apply.
It is 270 miles of untracked, hilly territory between Allenstead and the supposed crash-site along the nebulous border between Gralton and Numeria, the Land of Fallen Stars.
With Blane's 20' movement rate, the party could be there in about 33 days.... With light horses (75gp each, plus bit/bridle (2gp), and riding saddle (10gp), and food) you could make it in about 14 days.
The only substantive communities between Allenstead and the site are the River Kingdom known as the Protectorate of the Black Marquise the most piratical of River Kingdoms, and Rookwarden the ancient dwarven fortress in Loric Fells rumored to be currently held by an army of trolls and goblins.
Hallimir Duskrin |

Hallimir then turns to the inn keeper and enquires "We are heading to Numeria, would it be possible to acquire a carriage or some horses for the journey? We would obviously pay hansomly to anyone willing to take us there.
So I take that as a "no one is willing to take us" kind of deal, i.e. no hired carriage with driver available?
Hallimir also engages some of the Inn's patrons in discussions surrounding Numeria.
Diplomacy (Gather information): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Arathorn Vallar |
Don't have the gold for the horse so guess we are likely walking it though can probably use a little survival to supplement the rations.
Diplomacy (Gather Information: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5
Knowledge (Geography): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Not sure if the geography would help and there wasn't option but figured I would roll and see if there is anything Arathorn recalls.
Arathorn Vallar |
After giving up on finding any useful information Arathorn pulls the group to the side.
Do you think we should buy Blane a pony with the money from the mayor...We could also use it as a pack horse for some of the additional rations since Blane doesn't weight that much compared to a full size individual. That should allow us to travel a little faster without having to buy the same for everyone and will allow me and Atticus to hunt a little to supplement our rations since we only know how long it will take to get there and not how long we will have to stay out there away from any places to resupply.
Looks off to the side a little.
Probably should get a few more arrows also if we are going to be foraging for 20+ days.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
So I take that as a "no one is willing to take us" kind of deal, i.e. no hired carriage with driver available?
Wheeled carriages and carts don't travel well over rough terrain, and there is noting, but between Allenstead and the exploration site. You could take one but your speed would be reduced to walking again as you avoided all the ruts, trees, mud patches, hills and gullies. Arathorn could say as much. The River Kingdoms are not known for their infrastructure. There is a rough road between Tymon and Gralton that allows for carriage travel (a 7 day trip after a 3 day hike south to Tymon, the City of Gladiators).
Probably should get a few more arrows also if we are going to be foraging for 20+ days.
Each day the party spends foraging reduces their travel that day to half normal. So yes, way more than 20 days. Don't forget the mayor just gave Blane (Str 7) a bag full of gold (300 gp).
Blane Bonesnatcher |
" hey i can walk but a pack mule might be helpful as we are gainimg more items than i can carry by myself. But if i is slowing you down that much i would ride to make travel faster."
knowledge history: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
" the place we are going it would not be a good idea to ask about the crash site and leave that info to ourselves. As the people do not like them and destroy them as they find them. Lets hope that our site is still in one piece."
blane will restock what he can for rations and will get a rideing horse (or pony due to size) so the group can move faster and will get what he needs for it for the jouney.
Hallimir Duskrin |
Hallimir thanks the patrons of the Inn for their generosity and bids them farewell.
"we can always stop to restock in Protectorate. If we keep our wits about us I am sure we will be alright."
I have restocked with 30 more rations (total of 36) and will place most of them on Blane's Pony
The World's Most Interesting GM |
blane will restock what he can for rations and will get a rideing horse (or pony due to size) so the group can move faster and will get what he needs for it for the jouney.
Blane can ride either. The only real differences aside from stats (horses are pretty much better all the way around except in tight dungeon confines), are cost (horses cost 75gp, ponies cost 30gp) and the fact that you cannot fast dismount from a mount that is 'too big' for you. You will need tack for the animal as well (bit, bridle, and a saddle).
Hallimir Duskrin |
I'm happy for blame to take the cost if the pony/horse from the group funds we just recieved if everyone else is. Makes sence that it can carry most of our rations and the like.
Arathorn Vallar |
Works for me along with the extra rations you bought and maybe add in a quiver of arrows to keep on the pony. Planning on Arathorn to look for tracks as we get close to the crash site to try to make sure we aren't walking into an ambush or anything.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
So one pony? And Hallimir is buying (to keep for your very own after the the adventure)? Pack saddle (5gp), or riding saddle (10gp) and bit and bridle (2gp)?
I'll move us along this evening.
Blane Bonesnatcher |
so blane is getting the pony 30gp, a riding saddle cause cause you camnot ride in a pack saddle 10gp, a set of saddle bags 4gp, bit and bridal 2gp, thats a total of 46 gold leaving 254gp of the 300 that was given to blane in the sack.
The 30 trail rarions at 5sp equals 15gp leaving 239gp.
And then the quiver of arrows for 1gp leaving us with a total of 238gp.
Did i miss anything?anyone wanna add anything else?
Hallimir Duskrin |
Hallimir bought the 30 rations out of his own cash for himself because we will be travelling for 30 days and each ration is for 1 person per day, but he can't carry the additional 30lbs without being encumbered so he needs to put them on the pony. So don't take that 15gp from the 300 Blane has.
"Well, we has best be on our way"
Blane Bonesnatcher |
that 300 was what the mayor handed over so its community gold. Its not my personal gold. And the saddle bags can only hold 40lbs 20 on each side so were almost at our limit there.
"yes it would be a food isea to get on our way the more haste we can make the better chances of our wreck still being there."
The World's Most Interesting GM |
And we're off! (again, the internet crashed).
Just a reminder anything you buy, comes out of your eventual share of the treasure at the end of the adventure, though you of course get to keep it. If you wish to divvy the expense a bit one person could buy the pony and someone else buy the tack with idea of buying something to put it on later. Also a reminder, it takes one dose of trail rations to see one person right for a day.
The party can stop off in the Protectorate of the Black Marquis's chief town of Deadbridge (a large town (Current Pop. 4,100+; 90% human, 6% halfling) founded by a Chelxian pirate), if they like the place has a rather checkered reputation even for a River Kingdom.
With Blane's pony and Hallimir's supplies the party makes a good start. It takes about six-weeks to make the trek through the rough, sometimes forested and grimly beautiful Loric Fells--a place said to be the home of innumerable horrible monsters, such as goblins, giants, trolls, ghosts, wyverns, hags, demons, dragons, and indescribable insane fey creatures. (Fortunately you are too low level to bother with, and most of the locals find Rat Folk indigestible).
The trees become sparser as the party climbs into the Numerian foothills, and if Ulisha's map proves true their ultimate goal, a fragment of a thing fallen from the sky 9,000 years ago.
Ahead a series of switchbacks rises to a low summit. The view is phenomenal at the crest of this hill, where Ulisha’s map indicates the crash site. Vast plains extend to the north, where clouds gather on the horizon. To the south, the Sellen River cuts a definitive border between the River Kingdoms and Numeria.
Map updated.
For reference sake about 9,000 years ago on Earth, people in what is modern Iran where discovering the uses of barley in making beer, and soup. It takes them a bit longer to figure out bread technology--which when they finally did was the greatest thing since unsliced bread! Elsewhere, people were for some reason starting to domesticate cats. I think they are still working on it.
