Assuming folks take their time and climb a rope that has knots in it for those of the party that are Climb-Take-10-impaired, Lydia and her shade find themselves 30 feet up surrounded by tacky-feeling webbing, face to face with a bulging knot of webs undoubtedly containing hundreds of would-be spiders. The Black Maiden is on the rope 5' beneath Lydia.

As Lydia finishes securing the rope the webs nearby shift and something silken and tacky half drifts, half splashes onto her.

If you are corporeal, don't have a climb speed (or fly speed like you do while incorporeal), and are hanging off a tree I think technically you are climbing (with all the rules applying). I don't know much about shades in particular (so I am completely ignorant about, for example, their ability to cast 20 dice fireballs three times per day ;), or what exactly would happen if either Lydia or Fomal-haute Couture fell.

Yes, but there is a very large 'but'.

Just to be clear, here is the situation: Remember the old 1960's Batman show with Adam West? Remember the bit where they climbed up building walls with their bat-lines? Okay you are in the Robin position right now and Lydia/Formalhaut are Batman (Lydia sort of wears the shade like a cape so it sort of works--just go with it). What you are trying to do is climb into the space occupied by Batman while Batman is still there. Now, you might climb past him, but I'm going to guess the rope doesn't go much higher than 5 feet above the level of the silk ball. Now because you and Tawner are both climbing/swimming-impaired I being a nice GM and figuring you did not want to have to roll for every 7ish feet you moved along the rope with a chance of falling at every roll wrote a post mentioning that it might be smart to tie a bunch of knots in one of your ropes and use that to climb with (DC 5). That way the Maiden could take 10 and still make it without falling for 2d6 damage. So I'm still assuming you guys did that--otherwise the Maiden might be unconscious already (because I would need 4 successful DC 10 climb checks to get where you are, and more to get down). Now obviously there is a threat and stress and all that, so now the Maiden has to roll, but she did not roll poorly enough to miss a DC 5 by 5 or more so she didn't fall. She just failed to move. Now you still have a standard action which you could use to attempt to move her with or do something else.

I should probably also note that I as a GM I hate assuming what player characters are doing (generally that's their player's job--If it was just up to me then I should be a novelist not a GM), but there are some things that would seem obvious enough that any character in the situation would find them to be a reasonable course of action (given knowledge of the game mechanics/rules). This works both ways. For instance: Dominic, I figure, knows his spells, his player though might not always remember their exact parameters, so I am going to assume he does something other than cast daze right now. Role-playing is difficult in the abstract, digital arena we find ourselves playing in, and not no one is ever familiar with all the rules, so allowances are made all around.

The Black Maiden swears as her hand slips, but she manages to catch herself. Looking up, she does some quick mental calculations and growls in annoyance.

Round 1 is all we are dealing with just now for Tawner. So he can drop and sheath. Now he has a standard action left. If you want to climb the rope, it is attached to the tree 15 feet to the tree just south-southwest of Tawner.

Tawner fails to move up the rope.
