Kardak the Feared |
Kardak's move speed is 20 due to armor, correct?
The Emissary archetype lets me "move at normal speed when wearing medium armor".
Pirate Rob |
Barrin pounds the centipede's skull into the ground with a might blow from his flail
Aleister steps down and lines up a shot just to the side of Toren's shield and skewers the other centipede right through the eye and literally pinning it against the wall.
**End Combat**

Check, thanks. Also thanks to Arryn Wildblood the map is now available on the Campaign Info page.
Barrin Ironhite |
Barrin nods in answer to Kardak's question and moves to the opening in the chamber's southern wall, peering down the corridor to see what can be seen.
Pirate Rob |
Eight statues of demonic creatures anchored to great columns guard an open space in the center of this large hall. Various bits of scaffolding and debris are piled up next to the columns, which support a large gallery fifteen feet above the room’s floor. An open stone archways leads to the southeast.
Feel free to roll perception.
Notes: neither the pillars nor the edges of the room are hard corners. The thin line represents the border of the upper balcony.

1d20 ⇒ 4
1d20 ⇒ 10
Toren "Stand" Still |
Toren looks at the nearest statue, walking closer if need be, firstly to see if any valuable minerals were used and secondly to see what kind of stonework they could be.
Perception Notice Unusual Stonework. Can I take 20 at this point?
Barrin Ironhite |
Barrin joins Toren in examining the chamber, carefully noting the stonework in the statues, the floor, the walls, and the ceiling.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Perception roll should be considered at plus two for potentially noticing unusual stonework.
Pirate Rob |
Jarlgur peers around the hall.
[dice=Perception]1d20+5
From back in the hallway you see a goblin sized pick sticking out of one of the small debris piles next to a pillar, the pick appears to have been hastily discarded.
I'll move you guys up and give you a more detailed description of the room and statues etc. later today including spending the 2 minutes to take 20.
Pirate Rob |
Jarlgur 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Aleister 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 (Including +2 circumstance from noticing the pick earlier, although due to distance penalities you didn't see the goblin earlier.
Arryn 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Toren 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Barrin 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Kardak 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
As the Dwarves approach the pillars, with the rest of the rest of the party close behind Jarlgur suddenly notices the pick he saw earlier move as a Goblin emerges from the rubble, followed by several others from other rubble piles.
At the same time a hand full of goblins armed with short bows also peek their heads over the balcony railing and quickly fire their short bows before anybody is able to respond.
Please note that the blue goblins are on the balcony above, if it becomes an issue I'll create a second map for the second layer.
Goblins(Green) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Goblins(Blue) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Arryn Wildblood 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Toren "Stand" Still 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Kardak the Feared 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Barrin Ironhite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Aleister Marlowe 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Jarlgur Flamnord 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
??? 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Surprise Round:
Goblins(Blue)
Aleister
Goblins(Green)
The Goblins on the balcony despite setting an ambush do not seem particularly organized as each fires at a different target. An arrow that you can only assume was fired at you hits something completely irrelevant while a pair of arrows penetrate both Dwarves' defenses dealing 2 damage to Barrin and 1 damage to Toren.
Goblin arrow vs Toren 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Goblin arrow vs Aleister (including cover) 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1
Crit Threat vs Barrin 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Damage vs Barrin 1d4 ⇒ 2
Damage vs Toren 1d4 ⇒ 1
Remaining Surprise Round:

Goblins(Green)
They goblins also start shouting various things. Does anybody speak Goblin?
Aleister Marlowe |
Aleister Marlowe wrote:That looks like a 5ft step to me, meaning you can still take an action if you so desire.Aleister speaks goblin.
Aleister will move to H40, taking cover behind the pillar.
Yep...just realized that. I'll ready an attack against a goblin stepping out of cover.
Barrin Ironhite |
Barrin grunts in pain and ignores the jabbering goblin talk.
Barrin speaks the same languages as Toren. Are the goblins up top literally blue or are you just color-coding them to differentiate them from those on our level?
Pirate Rob |
The goblins all appear to be identical little green beasties with giant heads from your perspective. The color coding is merely to differentiate height.
Alester ducks behind a pillar, hesitates a moment and looses a crossbow bolt as the nearby goblin attempts to close with him.
To Hit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 8
The goblin squeals and goes down, coughing up blood from a crossbow bolt to the chest.
The other 2 goblins maneuver around the east side of the room.

Arrow 1d20 ⇒ 10

Fortunately for Aleister the pillar provides solid cover against the attack, unfortunately one still sticks into his shoulder for 4 damage.

Barrin moves back to try to gain a little cover from the goblins in the gallery above and finds himself standing next to the one Jarlgur just fired upon. He swings his flail, hoping to finish it off before it can attack him.
Five foot step to J40.
Swing flail at G2 using Combat Expertise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The flail-head catches the adjacent pillar, fouling Barrin's swing!
Barrin's AC is 19 until the start of his next turn.
Toren "Stand" Still |
Toren grunts as the arrow finds a sensitive spot to nick, then grits his teeth and slams Tessa down. His shoulder buried against the tower shield he shouts back, "Everyone form up behind me, I can give m'self cover and give you all some cover!"
Total Cover with Tower Shield. Since the shield is considered a solid wall for attacks passing through the edge, it should provide some sort of soft cover for anyone targeted by arrows through that edge, yes?
I added a red dashed line on my character cell to indicate where my total cover is facing.
Pirate Rob |
Jarlgur's crossbow bolt strikes home, sticking into the goblin's shoulder. Despite the blood and obvious pain the goblin bites off the rear half of the bolt and continues its assault.
Thanks for the line Toren, helps me visualize and remember. While you already provide soft cover for the folks behind you I will likely give an additional bonus due to the huge shield in the way.

"Do any of you speak their disgusting language? Should we try to take one alive for questioning?" shouts Kardak above the fray. That being said, he attempts to behead the nearest goblin with his glaive.
Does the goblin have cover?
Attack; Damage: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 161d10 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Aleister Marlowe |
"I speak their language...they only want to kill the ugly one. Judging by the arrow in my shoulder I guess that's me. You can take one alive if you want to...they'll get no such mercy from me."
Aleister gives Goblin 2 the Evil Eye before moving to J37.
Evil Eye: -2 to AC for 7 rounds, Will DC15 to shorten to one round.
Pirate Rob |
The goblin sees Kardak's blade coming and leaps up, mouth open wide in an attempt to swallow the glaive whole. This plan works about as well as expected. You have however learned an important fact about goblins, they tend to have high blood pressure. You learn this as goblin blood sprays all over Barrin, Jarl and Kard.
With Goblin2 down, Goblin 3 seems like a nice choice.
Will Save 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Aleister gives the remaining goblin on the floor the evil eye before retreating into the hallway behind his companions.
The last remaining goblin on the floor grimaces and swats at imaginary demons floating around its head as it scampers around the west side of the party using a double move.
Arryn Wildblood drawing a weapon is a move action, if you have a BAB of at least 1 you can do it the same time as an actual move. Also loading a sling requires 2 hands, while I believe this can be done with a light shield, I do not think it can be done with a heavy. Feel free to revise your action as necessary.

The Goblins up top seem upset that the which has fled.
One of them takes a clean shot at Barrin, while the other two fire at the sling wielder behind the pillar.
Surprisingly Barrin is struck by yet another goblin arrow, this time for 3 damage. Out of the pair of arrows that come for Arryn, only one strikes true for 3 damage.
After firing their arrows the Goblins up top reposition a bit, while continuing to yell stupid comments in goblin.

Barrin lets out a barrage of curses in Dwarven, wishing he could get at the archers above but knowing he has business to attend to at hand.
He retreats towards the stairs at an angle and the sound of the spinning chain comes again. This time Barrin's wrath is directed at the goblin who moved to threaten Jarlgur.
Move: Five foot step to I39.
Barrin uses Combat Expertise and swings his flail at G3.
Flail attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Barrin's AC is 19 until the beginning of his next turn.
Above the noise of battle, Barrin shouts, "I've a wand of healing magic in my pack! Use it on me if I go down!"
Pirate Rob |
"There's got to be a way up to those monsters! I'm heading to the other side!"
Taking a moment to assess the room the only other exit you can see from down here is in the SE, and it does appear to be stairs leading up to a platform and then perhaps doubling back. You cannot see any passages in the gallery above, but that's more due to the angle than anything else.

Done... I'll cover you
Next round with loaded sling is step out and hold action until I see goblin about to shoot and sling him first.
Best that can be done in Pathfinder.
Pirate Rob |
I sketched myself out some line of sight drawings to make sure I had it right and I think the non Dwarves can see a little more than what I was describing earlier. We'll chalk it up to being focused on the pillars and then the goblins and the fact that the passageways themselves aren't visible, just the top of the frames.
From the north end of the lower room you can barely see the top of a stone arch in the SW corner of the gallery judging from the architecture you've seen so far it seems likely that it may lead to a passageway, but you can't be sure100% sure from here.
From the south west side of the lower room Kardak can see a similar archway in the northwest corner.
I have marked the areas where there appear to be passages in the upper gallery in brown
Toren "Stand" Still |
Toren will hold his Total Cover until the people behind him start moving back up the staircase, then he will back up (5 ft step at a time if necessary) maintaining the Total Cover. When he gets to the stairwell entrance, he'll pause there just inside the entrance with Total Cover
Toren sees the Cavalier take off in a sprint and he shouts, too late, "Kardak, WAIT!!!" He looks back over his shoulder at his companions, his beard mussed into an unfamiliar frown. "We can't leave him alone!"
He shouts back to Kardak, "Kardak, I'll keep a cover line at the entrance of the stairs...Cry out if yeh can't make it back!!"
Pirate Rob |
With Kardak sprinting across the room and Toren holding the line we're currently waiting on Aleister who just barely has line of sight on the goblins from where he is.

The goblins argue briefly over what's harder to shoot through, a pillar or a "door" before firing 3 arrows at Arryn.
Seeing his moment Arryn fires his sling in return but it bounces off the balcony railing instead of hitting a goblin.
Fortunately for Arryn his pillar holds true and none of the arrows connect.
