Kariel was a rare Aasimar birth - a child directly descended from an ancestor in the celestial realms, and gifted with a connection to the gods that few mortals could ever match. Her heritage was immediately obvious; as if the full head of pink hair wasn't enough, there were two tiny wings sticking out of her back. Such births have usually been seen as good fortune for entire nations or even entire worlds, and Kariel's parents hoped that her presence was the start of the gods favoring the world and allowing magic through once more. Gathering what money they had, her parents sent a messenger off to the closest major temple (about a week away) in the hope of spreading the good news and giving their child to the church. They were entirely correct about what the church would do... but the messenger talked a little too freely.

Three days before the delegation from the church arrived, Kariel's house was attacked and her parents were killed. The culprits were a group of cultists who thought that her birth could be twisted for their own ends, and their intent was to pervert the baby's essence and consecrate her to their dark master. What none of them realized was that a certain Empyreal Lord already had his eyes set on the child, and her curse had begun to go wild along the way. Falling trees, distracting noises... it was hitting hard just then, and the commotion was enough to get the attention of someone else, who just happened to have caught a glimpse of the cultists as they fled towards their base.

Once they'd reached it, however, Kariel was not exactly safe. The cultists still didn't realize that a divine being had already marked her, and went about their business with merciless precision. Her still-tiny left wing and right arm were chopped off and burned as an offering, starting the long ritual that would twist the child into an abomination. The whole event probably would have succeeded if the base hadn't been raided... by a whole group of bandits. Magic was already a very valuable commodity, and the one who'd seen the cultists go past was part of a group that hunted for children to sell to the empire. The cultists possesses more fanaticism than actual power or ability, and the experienced killers had very little difficulty eliminating them. Kariel was rescued before the ritual was complete and ultimately managed to avoid the planned desecration, but most of the problems were only just beginning...

The bandits had no magical healer of their own, but several members had some basic experience with normal healing techniques, and they managed to stop the bleeding from her severed limbs. Thus began a surprisingly long chain of sales where Kariel was shipped all over the place and generally treated like a commodity instead of a person. The fact that she grew slowly (as was normal for her kind) made it all the easier, and her handlers quickly discovered that she didn't really need to eat as long as she was exposed to the light of the sun.

After decades of being sold all over the place, those involved with her particular circumstances were used to her good behavior - and utterly failed to realize what was going on inside of her mind. While not exactly a genius, Kariel was far from stupid, and had spent ages observing her surroundings, observing others, and generally figuring things out. It didn't hurt that she'd actually been sold outside of the human-dominated lands for awhile, and realized that things could be different. The feelings grew and grew until, at last, she couldn't take it anymore.

She was sick and tired of being treated like an object. She had only one arm, which meant she often needed help for basic tasks (or at least had to do them very slowly), her one wing seriously unbalanced her, and not once had any of those involved with her perpetual enslavement seemed to consider her at all worthwhile as a person. She had been patient for literally decades, following along obediently and trying her best to be good, and all it had brought her was misery. She was about to start cursing the gods and begging them to just finish her off when one of the spirits that was haunting her just happened to knock a small, silver disc off of a shelf in her current confinement chamber. Morbidly curious, Kariel moved over to pick it up... and for the first time in her life felt a strong connection to the gods. More specifically, she realized, it was a connection to Korada, the Empyreal Lord of forgiveness and peace.

Through this brush with the divine, Kariel realized that all the pain and suffering she'd gone through over the decades still wasn't enough to demand vengeance. If she truly wanted to be good, then she had to set aside such urges and forgive them. They did not deserve it, but they would receive it anyway. Crying, Kariel fell to her knees and clutched the divine focus with her one arm, begging for the Empyreal Lord's help in forgiving the wrongs done to her.

Korada, who had been watching over her the whole time, gave it. Kariel had been utterly sincere about wanting to be better than she had been, and the favor of the celestial being was soon manifested as her missing arm and wing were restored. Not to the way they should have been, but with replacements that were clearly artificial yet somehow behaved exactly like flesh would have, right down to their weight and dexterity. This was Kariel's reminder from her deity, an everlasting mark to help her remember what forgiveness was about.

It was just after the replacement limbs had appeared that the door to her room burst open, and her latest owner waddled into the room, intending to put her divine essence to good use. He'd been expecting a broken, obedient servant. What he saw instead was a girl newly restored, surrounded by a nimbus of celestial radiance. The light gathered together a moment later, resulting in the very first manifestation of Kariel's halo. The guards were terrified, but her owner was even more so, falling backwards and trying desperately to pedal away from her as she slowly walked towards him. When he hit a wall and could retreat no further, he simply lay there, slack-jawed as Kariel approached.

She looked at him for a moment, then gently knelt down and placed a hand on his shoulder, speaking a few soothing words. Kariel stood up a moment later and made her way to the entrance of the estate. Seeing the changes in her, nobody had the nerve to try and stop her. She was, at last, free from her long captivity... and had set aside the grudges. The past was awful, but it no longer mattered. She had a future to look forward to, and that was precisely what she was going to do.

The first people to see her after her escape were, somewhat understandably, a bit slack-jawed when she simply walked up to their cart and asked if they knew how to get to a city. Kariel had always possessed a lot of natural charm, but with Korada's acceptance had come her powers in full, and she now had far more magic to choose from. She had truly become an Oracle, and her adenture was only just getting started.

Rednal's Kareil Aasimar's Oracle is approved for the discussion thread.

(She can't play both Tio and Kareil, she'll have to choose which one she wants to play when gameplay starts)

10 of slots of 16 filled.

Tio was always the backup; I'd prefer to play Kariel. ^^

That's fine, great even because we now have 2 divine spell casters, but I think that Tio should stay an established NPC at least for back story reasons. Please feel free to post with both until start of gameplay.

Feel free to use Tio as you'd like for the plot. o wo b

I just gotta work up another alias here...

Full disclosure, I'm a bit leery of the 8 person party, but I'm intrigued by the world anyway. So I'll throw in a quick general concept to see your reactions and to figure out what I can make of it. If in the end it doesn't work, I hope at least everyone will have some additional insight into the contours of this game.

Braden (Brad) was discovered as a wee babe to possess natural gifts at sorcery, stemming from a latent draconic heritage. So the Empire took him, and sought to train him. Trouble is, the academies where they train these child prodigies are not easy. They pushed and pushed, and Brad broke. He lost his will to care. His talents went to waste. He was a flunky, and was sent back to the real world, where he drifted without aim, drinking, gambling, cursing and fighting.

Brad eventually gets into trouble with the wrong people. They beat him and left him for dead. But he wasn't gone yet. "Young," as the old man was known, was a sensei of sorts, a descendent from the Tien army left on the continent long ago. Indeed, there were plenty of Tien who were viewed with suspicion where Brad came from. They inevitably formed their own society. Young used old remedies to heal Brad, and after seeing his potential decided to make Brad his special project.

Eventually, Brad embraces his new lease on life, training in martial arts and learning to discipline his mind. Well, at least sort of. He is shaped to have a good heart, but Brad is still consumed by anger toward the empire and its authority. Unwilling or unable to truly embrace the discipline needed to become a great monk, Brad parts ways with Young and sets out to find his own path in the world.

Lingering questions for the background include whether there really is a marginalized Tien community, whether a magical flunky is allowed back onto the streets, and whether there's a geographic location that would make sense for Braden.

Mechanically, Braden would be a Martial Artist (Monk) 4 / Sorcerer 1 / Dragon Disciple X. Chaotic good character (thanks to Martial Artist). At some point, his latent magical talent is coming out with a vengeance.

Traits:
Adopted -- Open Hand and Mind (i.e. adopted by Monks)
Blood of Dragons (draconic bloodline)
Magical Knack (natural affinity for magic, and admittedly useful)
Oppressive Expectations - closest drawback I could find to cracking under the pressure of high expectations.
______ - additional trait to capture why the Imperial Academy doesn't want him? Or could do something else with it.

Thanks for the interest Tazo.

First I've been asked to consider running 2 six person groups and I'm considering doing that. I don't however want to go back on offering 16 slots for players and I am a bit concerned that running a third game will be too much, so I am still in the early stages of making up my mind.

Second:
You've hit on one of the central intentional mysteries of the campaign with your questions. A character with a qualifying trait indicating powerful political ties could indeed wash out of an Imperial Service Magic Academy. No one else ever washes out. No one.

Third the Tein army that was left on Imperial soil wasn't a small one. Including support staff and hangers on almost 2 million were left stranded on the super continent. That number was broken up into a large number of much smaller units the largest of which was about 200,000 strong (the second largest was about 70,000 strong). Today the Tein inside the Empire live very much like the Chinese did in America during the 20th century.

I just realized that I never indicated the population numbers of the Empire. The largest 3 cities of the Empire have populations of over 1 million each. This is not a campaign world based on a western Europe where Rome fell. This is a campaign world where Rome stayed strong and became the British Empire with a quarter of the globe under its control and one fifth of the world's population at its height. Even in its current reduced state it controls over ten% of the world's land mass and hundreds of millions people consider themselves citizens of the Empire.

Characters start at first level, but you could write up a background package that included training by a monk. You haven't selected a campaign trait, for the background you indicated an imperial magic academy washout a good choice would be Bastard to represent the discovery of your noble connections while at school.

Hmmm don't know if I have time to submit a character of my own, either way I hope that all who are involved will enjoy themselves.

Wolfgang the original submission deadline was midnight Sun. the 29th but it was moved back one week because of Christmas. There are ten players who have already been confirmed 2 more will be needed to form 2 parties if I decide to run groups of six instead of eight. You are welcome to submit a character.

Back from holidays! Looking forward to the game.

2 New Background Packages, 1 New Great House, and 1 NPC that can be used in Backgrounds

New Background Packages:

Elite Imperial Veteran. You are a veteran of one of the elite units of the Imperial Armed Forces, no matter the reason you have left the experience has left you changed forever. Pick a unit and apply the benefits to your character.

Option 4: The 536th Penal Battalion (The Forsaken). Penal units are only formed in wartime, and their numbers and designations are never reused, with one exception. In 278 YE during the chaos surrounding the death of Empress Tassira of Rastar and her Imperial Guard at the hands of Alumananx the Vile and his legions of undead, the 536th Penal Battalion was ordered to charge into an open portal directly to the marshaling grounds outside of Shadow Tor and assault the massive citadel city thus bypassing the 500 mile zone of death. The Imperial General who ordered the suicidal attack never expected it to succeed merely to buy some time for Imperial Forces to regroup. The last thing that anyone expected was for convicted murderer corporal Runan Reid to come tumbling though a portal into the Imperial Senate several days later carrying Alumananx the Vile’s right hand, and bearing one of the Twelve.

Emperor Runan the 1st commanded that there would always be a 536th and that completing a term of service (4 years in war time, 20 in peace time) would see anyone’s honor restored and record erased.

Benefit: 1) If Human take Defiant Luck and pick 1 more feat from the following list. If non-human pick two of the following: Desperate Battler, Endurance, Fortified Armor Training, Improved Initiative, or Lone Wolf.

.

The Wierdingly Way. “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. When the teacher is ready the student will appear.” At some point someone saw potential in you that you never suspected existed and trained you in Tien philosophies and fighting arts. Someday you will be expected to do the same.

Benefit: 1) Take Improved Unarmed Strike, (if you gain a level of monk gain an extra bonus feat at first level), and pick 1 more of the following: Dodge, Lighting Reflexes, Iron Will, Combat Expertise, Great Fortitude.

Benefit: 2) Become specialized in Knowledge Religion; gain a skill point to put in it. Become specialized in your choice of the following and gain a skill point in it: perception, acrobatics, stealth, heal.

The House of Avergnon:

The Third House

The House of the Boarhound

Characteristics

Race: Human (Kelesh)

Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Income: Trade, Mining, Forestry, Brokerage and Land

Colors: Crimson and Purple

Arms: Crossed sable long spears on a argent background

House Avegnon’s strength lies not in the Alesian Empire proper but in the Selentine Empire the largest of Alesian’s autonomous regions. Half of the Selentine Emperors and Empresses have been members of the Avegnon family and in the last 400 years no other family has sat on that throne. The members of the Avegnon family tend to be somewhat arrogant, intelligent, and they never forget a friend or an enemy.

NPC

Vors Crispin:

Professor Vors Crispin was 80 years old when he died 4 years ago. Grey hair, intense green eyes, with a short trim beard he was quite the sight as he strode around the campus of the Great Library’s Imperial University. He talked as much with his hands as his voice, energetically waving them back and for as he gave a lecture or even to just place his meal order at the White Bear Inn. A polymath he was the leading expert in many different fields including Ancient History, Mathematics, Magic, Engineering, Linguistics, and Underwater Basket Weaving. Several of his works are the definitive work on the topic they are about, a fact he hated as he felt that scholarship should always be advancing.

.He was Rowan’s faculty advisor, and perhaps his favorite professor.

.He died in his study sitting at his desk just days after Tassira started university. She only met him once, the morning on the day of his death, and she could barely speak to him at first as she asked him to autograph her copy of Mathematics, Magic, and the Ancients but he drew her out of her shell by asking her opinion on specific points in the book. She will never forget his wide smile and the way his eyes lit up during the hour and a half they talked. (She completely missed her first comparative literature class).

.While he spent the last 25 years of his “retirement” on the Isle of the Great Library, he spent the 20 years before that at Imperial University’s main campus in the capital of the Empire.

.At his funeral it was revealed he had earned the Starburst of Extraordinary Heroism as a member of the 3rd Scout Detachment, not once but twice, one of only 3 people in the history of Empire to do so. An honor guard of the 3rd Scouts had been rushed magically from across the length of the empire to serve at the funeral.

The original character submission deadline is in about ten hours. I extended it by 1 week because of the holidays.

I have decided that party size will be a max of six, and I'm willing to run a 3rd group if needed.

Right now there are 10 people with approved players, if there are no more submissions that will make two parties of five each.

If you expressed interest but have not yet submitted a character you still have time.

I would suggest you summarize the classes that are selected, the noble houses, regions and the packages available Ghost. That would make it easier for others players to get a grip on the homebrew.

We currently have ten players approved. With two more players two parties of six each could be formed. If submissions suddenly increase beyond my expectations I would be willing to run a third party of four to six.

I will run two parties of five if needed but two parties of six would be better, submissions run until midnight on Sun. the 5th of Jan. 2014.

The approved players and the character’s they will be playing are:

Full Arcane Casters

Dragoncat's Tassira Vantye, Human, Sorceress, Scholar of the Ancients
Walter das Sombras, Ikvvy, Half-Elf, Sorceress, Outlander (Exile)

Full Divine Casters

Rednal's Kareil, Aasimar Oracle, Touched by Divinity
KRNVR's Arean Star-Eyed, Stargazer Lore Oracle, Blackened Curse, Touched by Divinity

Martial

Fatty's Krag (Kragthon Al'Trin), Dwarf, Fighter, Conspiracy hunter, House Trin (Great House)
Sawyer Masonjones's Rowan Mikalson, Human, Fighter, Scholar of the Ancients
psionichamster's Marcos DeAngelis, Human Fighter, Conspiracy Hunter, House DeAngelis (Minor House)

Other – Martial/Skilled, Martial/Divine, Martial/Arcane, etc

Andrea 1's Furnok of Ferd, Human, Ranger , Conspiracy Hunter
Nightdeath's Vigor Savage, Half-Orc, Bloodrager, Spear Scion
True Repentance's Eldrian, Elf, Slayer, Outlander (Exile)

.

To the players already approved and that have been posting in the discussion thread for some pre game role playing and preliminary introductions to each other. I would like you to start thinking of potential party composition. Each party should have a full arcane caster, a full divine caster, and someone with the Conspiracy Hunter trait. I have my own ideas but I would like to hear your ideas as well.

Hmm..

Tassira
Kareil
Rowan
Furnok

Ikvvy
Arean
Krag
Eldrian

That would be:

Vigar
Tassira
Kariel
Rowan
Furnok

and

Marco
Ikvvy
Arean
Krag
Eldrian

I'm sure some of the players want to run with their friends. For me, I don't recognize that any of you are people I've gamed with before, so the closest I have to a preference is for the characters who have RP'd with Arean: Rowan, Ikvvy, and Tassira. And Kariel(but we won't be on the same team, anyway), and just now, Vigar (thanks for the soup!)

Will we be an in-character two teams in the same continuity, or two continuities of one team each?

The only preference I have is the Eldrian and half-sister Ikvvy are in the same party.

There will be two teams in the same continuity. Three times if a lot of new people apply which I don't really see happening.

Sovereign Court

I have no preference but I have played with Rednal (one game) and have seen the others Dragoncat, True Repentance & Walter in other game submissions.

Vigar has only intereacted with Rowan, Tassira, Arean, Kareil so far.

Map 1

Map 2

So here are links to the Map that inspired this campaign. It is the same map in both links, but I put both up in case something went wrong with one. The map images were posted to different computer game discussion forums and you have to scroll down the page a little to see the maps. I have the image saved to my tablet and can zoom in and out pretty easy. For a good overview I suggest setting a zoom of 150% and increasing from there as you want to look at something in particular.

At the top you will see the scale, if you've forgotten for this game that scale should be treated 3x as large (so that last marker represents 150 leagues not 50).

This area is considered the "old heartland" of the Empire. From here it expanded to circle the globe and 25% of the planet's total surface area. Off the map to the East and the South there is at least twice as much land, all of it controlled and ruled by the Empire. Only in the old heartland do autonomous administrative regions exist. To the South of the mountains is large desert the goes on for hundreds of miles before giving way to more forgiving terrain. To the East of the mountains a region much like the Great Plains of the United States exist eventually coming to a river the size of the Amazon running almost the north west length of the continent. On the other side of that and large stretch of territory before coming to the Eastern Ocean.

On the map near the southern border in the middle you can see the city Marthos. This is the capital of the Empire, some times called the Old Capital or the Western Capital because there is a city on the far eastern coast that serves as an administrative hub for the territory east of the mountains.

Marthos was originally built as a fortress for an Order of Paladins and their trusted allies called the Sirian Knights. The original fortress is still maintained. The Imperial Palace sits outside of this fortress. The city itself has a population of more than 1 million, probably closer to 2 million if you count all the outlier areas and military forces stationed there.

Sovereign Court

heh heh I remembered that game.

Yeah I do too.

Sovereign Court

What I see here is:

If we're to be 2 teams with the GM's recommendations than it's likly that Each team wil consist of either an arcane or a divine and a conspiracy hunter.

My choice:
Nightdeath's Vigor Savage, Half-Orc, Bloodrager, Spear Scion
(Other)
Rowan Sawyer Masonjones's Rowan Mikalson, Human, Fighter, Scholar of the Ancients (Martial)
Andrea 1's Furnok of Ferd, Human, Ranger , Conspiracy Hunter (Conspiracy Hunter)
KRNVR's Arean Star-Eyed, Stargazer Lore Oracle, Blackened Curse, Touched by Divinity (Divine)
Dragoncat's Tassira Vantye, Human, Sorceress, Scholar of the Ancients (Arcane)

psionichamster's Marcos DeAngelis, Human Fighter, Conspiracy Hunter, House DeAngelis (Minor House) (Conspiracy Hunter)
Sawyer Masonjones's Rowan Mikalson, Human, Fighter, Scholar of the Ancients (Martial)

The second choice being that I rped with them and haven't had a chance to get to know the rest and also because I inserted myself between Tassira, Kareil and Rowan.

I just realised that there are 3 Conspiracy Hunters.

Then we should probably have some conspiracies to hunt, eh? XD

I am easy going.

Sovereign Court

lol. How's this?

1st Possible Conspiracy: The empire has a hidden breeding ground in an attempt to breed more magic users
2nd Possible Conspiracy: Magic is dying thus the fall of magic users.
3rd Possible Conspiracy: Gods have made a bet and are now jockeying for places as the game over the centuries has reached another chapter
4th Possible Conspiracy: The dragons have gotten bored
5th Possible Conspiracy: The empire has a secret agenda to control all magic and failing that is elimnating all opposition.

6th: To support their powerful mages, the empire is consuming their weakest prospects in some steampunk horror of a device, creating concentrated philtres of power. But don't imagine great power protects you, because an up-and-comer is a threat to the philtre supply/share of those at the top...

As party composition I have no objections. I would suggest, since everyone seems friendly enough, to put people together regarding posting capability, so the faster ones would go to the fast paced group, and the 1/day people would be together without much desperation.

Sovereign Court

Good idea Walter.
What do the rest think?

I'm for it.

There is the upward limit on posting cycles: the GM. I mean, while we can chat back and forth, actual progress in the game is limited to the GM's cycle time.

With that said, I think I'm a fit for the fast group.

Sovereign Court

I can do either. Love a good story.

I can post several times a day, once I have caught up on all that is happened.

I'm also fine with either group. ^^ I just post at the pace others do, really.

Ok that will not work, we're all freakers who have nothing else to do so our frequency is just several/day, or so it seems...

I hope GM doesn't mind players putting stuff in the setting...

Because that's kind of what I'm doing right now.

Sovereign Court

lol.
I think I fall somewhere in the middle?

*Attempts bluff check*

Well my posting frequency varies, largely depending on my kids and whether or not I think I need sleep, I should be able to manage 2 or 3 times a day easy, more than that, I guess the answer is sometimes. Now that is per game not overall, so each party should see at least 2 posts a day from me assuming everyone keeps that pace up.

Fatty if you want to bring in your dwarf paladin you sent me, go ahead post him here in the recruitment thread and they join the others in the discussion thread with him.

On his way.

Sorry for not following up sooner, but thanks for the response! I'm going to put something together. I can usually post quite regularly.

I'll need to put together a more fully fleshed background, but here's the crunch, using the background package you suggested.

Braden Swanson

Sovereign Court

*Punts this up*

Tazo the crunch looks good so far, like you said you just need to finish your background.

The list of players and character's should be updated to show that Fatty's Krag the fighter has become Krag the Paladin.

Fatty's Krag (Kragthon Bloodshield, Al'Trin), Dwarf, Paladin, Conspiracy hunter, House Trin (Great House)

Character has been updated. Let me know if you have any ideas about how to better mesh with your world. Braden Swanson

Tazo:
I think you've done a good job. You need to add age and appearance to your profile, but not everyone has done that yet so you're not really behind there. I think that Stansburgs are either a Great House or a Minor House that is just barely short of being considered a Great House. Either way you should write up a short description and post it under a spoiler in the recruitment thread.

A possilbe right up

House Stansburg

The Fouth House

The House of the Dragon

Characteristics

Race: Human (Chelish)

Alignment: Neutral

Income: Trade, Mining, Forestry, Fishing, Farming

Colors: Black and Silver

Arms: Silver Dragon rampent against a sable background, argent trim

House Avegnon’s strength lies Trade and taking advantage of the historicaly strategic position. Meneloth and the surrounding area has belonged to the family for centuries and some say that more than one dragon's horde has increased the House's wealth.

So just to keep this formal ...

Tazo's Braden Swanson, Human, Monk (Martial Artist),Bastard (House Stanburg, Great House) is accepted. You are free to post in the disscussion thread for some pre game role play.

11/12 slots for the first 2 parties filled.
