The Wake of the Avatar (Inactive)

Game Master Tirq

A game based off of the Avatar: The Last Airbender and of The Legend of Korra

1 to 50 of 169 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | next > last >>

The players are gathered together by a mysterious man wearing a mask of a bird. All of you are simple benders from your respecting town or village. He wishes to train you for his own purposes, his reasons are his own.

This is a Campaign based off of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

The rules are simple: 1st Level, 20pt buy, max health at begining and 1/2HD+1 at each level

There is only one class throughout the whole world: The Element Bender Monk

I want around 5 players for this, I'll gladly accept 6 or 4, but too many will make this slow, while too few will constrict what people will want to do.

Run the backstory by me before you do anything, though.

What level are we starting?

Edit: I plan on going Earth Bender.

Edited.

I'm thinking firebender. Means well, but doesn't tend to think things through and often causes trouble for herself and others with her tendency to leap then look instead of look then leap and is impatient with her family reminding her frequently about the importance of discipline. They would be more than happy to let her go train with the bird-masked man in order to get her to live up to her potential...and get out from underfoot.

Air for me then.

I'll cook up a background...

EDIT: I know others had dibs before me, so if I end up being guy 6 or higher I'll gladly bow out at that time.

Airbender that is 17-ish, still hasn't earned his stripe tattoos, as he can't think of any special air bends to come up with to earn them. He asks to go with the birdmaksed man to see if he can teach him anything that may get the creative juices flowing, and earn his proper place at the temple.

Also, don't worry about money. Standard issue equipment will be dealt with when the man with the Bird Mask shows up. Just make a wish list for now.

@Krybyn: I like it.
@lynora: Ditto.
@Hragas: Put some meat on that sandwitch.

Meat!:
Dionoclese, Dion for short, is an Earthbender who never quite lets on as much as he knows. Tending to be Quiet Dion get's overlooked a lot but has enough talent to be useful in the basic farmwork, and house contruction. His father has high hopes for him to join the mail system. Dion just wants to do something that requires more of a brain. He tries to keep himself busy by coming up with creative ways to earthbend but doesn't have the control to put any of them into action. When a strange man in a Bird Mask shows up offering power and control? Dion only asks when and where.

How do you like that sandwich?

Is it a... TIRQY Sandwitch?

On a more relevant note, looks good.

The Exchange

I want to apply to this very much. I might just end up doing that. I'll have to think about it, but I'm dotting for interest in the meantime.

Edit: I've got italics tags, I might as well use them. I've been spending too much time on IRC.

Ok, so fire bender it is for me.

I'm thinking eldest son of a noble or well-to-do merchant. Mom and pop get sick of him loafing around the house and paying for bending lessons hes not exactly taking to. They call up the local Fire Nation recruiter to come pay him a visit and enter stage left our bird-masked friend.

Hmm...any possibility of playing as a non-Bender? Thinking possibly of a Qi-blocker (Monk Martial Artist archetype.)

just so i am understanding the class, you have to take the chakra level feat with almost every feat you get to be any good, meaning the only only ability you could really pick out would be the bending ones you get for free from class, if you wanted to stay on par with the rest of the group, so no power attack, weapon feness or other neat tricks, i could see using ki rather then chakra as the modifier for ability's. but that is just my thoughts, and i hope it makes you guys think a bit about it.

Similarly, I'd love to play a non-bender, think Sokka. I'd be using the Weapon Adept Monk archetype, perhaps with a level of Lore Warden to get all knowledge skills since that would be part of the character.

He'd be a guy born as the only non-bender in a family of air benders and as such he's used to people bending all around him. From a young age he has had to compensate for his inability to bend by being smarter, stronger and more durable than his bending friends and family.

As for how he ends up with the Bird Masked man: If Kryzbyn is ok with it he could be the older brother or a friend of his character and has gone along as company and because he vowed to do things like serve tea and clean for the birdmasked man.

EDIT: Besides, every group of adventuring benders needs their Sokka equivalent

GM Tirq wrote:

Damn that made me laugh when i got up this morning.

First off, if you want to be Sokka, you have to funny. Second, I will propose a Water Bender named Kamiko. Kamiko grew up in the Northern Water Tribe as a hunter. He has a Polar Bear Dog name Kazuya, and has begun to understand that he has the gift of Water Bending. He is 18, and he is going to train with the masked man so that he may come to better understand and use his bending abilities. If you need more, I can try and come up with something, but i'd rather not build an entire backstory for a character i'm not going to use. I will not start a character sheet until I have been selected as a player. Hope the game goes well, if nothing else.

Also, I didn't mean I won't work on the character, I just meant I won't write anything down.

I didn't say I want to be Sokka, I said a Sokka like character in that he is a character that gets by on being smarter than those around him and trying harder and working his as off. Besides, Sokka is more than a comic relief, he is the brain of the team avatar he was part of.

Going out on a limb here and saying our starting race is human?

Race is whatever you want, but you will always turn out human.

I.E. You may pick Half-Orc so that you may gain the bonus to Intimidate and the knowledge of using a Falchion in battle, but you cannot gain Darkvision.

Also, I know this might sound unfair, but the closest class to this archetype is Commoner. Same HD, Same BaB, except you don't bend any element. I'll beef it up by saying that you may get 4+INT instead of 2+INT for skills, you may pick 1 Martial with all Simple weapons instead of 1 Simple, and you may have Light Armor and Shields.

pavaan wrote:

Yeah I noticed that thing about the chakra level, I would assume that everyone would also start level one with that feat for free...since you would have to take it twice to get any initial benefit from it....that and anything multiplied by zero is zero so our bending wouldn't actually do anything but look snazzy heh. Think we should modify the class slightly so we automatically gain a chakra level every two or three levels instead of needing to waste a feat on it?

Is this the most up to date version of the Bender class? I recall a discrepency in the last forum.

EDIT: Yes there is, and It adresses your question threepwood.
Bender 10.0.

Closest class Commoner? The entire bender is just a modified monk. Same hd, same bab, same weapon proficiencies, same skills. As far as flavor goes, the world of Avatar isn't a world of benders and commoners, there are dozens if not hundreds or even thousands of non-benders that are soldiers, monks (think Ty Lee as well as the Kyoshi), scholars or more.

Cuàn I think your end game class should be Pathfinder Chronicler.

I can see where that's coming from, but I'm not sure it would be ideal. The character would be a tactician more than a scholar and the knowledge skills I'd be after would be Geography, Local and Engineering as well as some History and Nobility. If I play him as a Lore Warden or Tactician fighter I think he'll turn into a Student of War eventually.

Main problem I have with the Chronicler is the bardic performance parts of it (how I loath playing bards).

EDIT: That is assuming a non-bender would even be allowed.

So when are you making selections for the group?

I thought we were all in, considering we were the only people to reply to the first thread.

I've been poking around a character sheet but haven't really finalized anything yet, and thanks for finding the updated element bender rules Hragas!

Edit: Also Tirq said he was on vacation so hes probably ignoring us to do fun vacation stuff.

Well I guess we can count ourselves lucky since there are really only five types of characters in this campaign, so we can't really have a new person submit a character at the end and have to GM say "his character is better than so-and-so's, so I am going to choose their character to play. Sorry whoever just got booted out at the last minute." God, don't you just hate it when that happens?

Also, I was looking at the updated class, and I have to ask. It says Water Benders can't Waterbend on a Full Moon. Did I read that wrong, or did the person who created it just happen to be ignorant or stupid? It says that our powers are enhanced during the Full Moon, but that we can't bend. What. The. Hell.

Wow yeah....that doesn't even seem to be a typo. I just assumed it worked like the child of the sun feat for fire benders. So according to the way its written water benders can punch like a truck but couldn't spit if they wanted to.

Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm back. Let me just say, Galveston Island rocks. I got me a Hawaiian shirt that is really comfortable. Did you know that they don't have internet in Louisianna? But I digress.

CUAN: I had an older version. Look at the link at the top. The HD is 6 and the BaB is 1/2. Now that I look at the newer version, I think either the Monk or the rogue would work. And on the subject of Non-Benders, you'll notice that all of the ones mentioned fight as good as the benders. The only difference is one group can bend the elements and the others can't. Rogue works nicely because they can't use magic (Too close to bending) but have the same BaB, Same HD. In fact, I think Sokka was a Rogue. Longsword/Club? Check. Skills everywhere that do not apply when they matter? Check. Just as good at fighting as everyone else? Check. They also get enough skills to take the Knowledges, just like you want.

BARON: I'll make my desicion sometime next Tuesday.

PAVAAN: Check out the new one. Its better.

GUYBRUSH: I'm not finding this lack of bending. Would you be so kind as to give me a page number?

HRAGAS: You're doing good, keep it up.

Rogue sounds nice. Would you consider allowing the Swordmaster archetype (found here) on a non Tengu for this? Personally I think it would make a great fit for a character like this while Trap Sense, which gets replaces, absolutely doesn't (nor does trapfinding really). All it does is make a character a better combatant through the use of fighting styles.

For a monk it's just too bad that Weapon Adept and Martial Artist can't stack.

Sure. I think it would be a nice touch. Just remember that if you come across traps, everyone will blame you. Not that there will be, but just running that buy you.

Sure, no problem. He'll still have Trap Sense by the way, so even if they show up finding them won't be a problem.

This sounds kind of interesting. Mind if I join in as a firebender?

Backstory would sound something like this:

Backstory:
Adole is the only daughter of a pawnshop owner. She's no stranger to hard work and heavy lifting. After her 5th birthday, she learned she was a firebender after trying some of the same moves she saw during the first Agni Kai her father took her too. She almost burned down her dad's bed, but he forgave her and set her up with some firebending lessons.

She feels like she's already surpassed her previous master, and has since sought out the aid of the bird masked man. Adole doesn't know she still has a lot to learn..

Let me know what you think!

All right, here's the qi-blocker type character I mentioned. I'll do a profile later.

Su Jiang is a girl from the Fire Nation. As a girl, she was always fascinated with the spiritual side of Bending, and bothered by the Fire Nation's teachings on Firebending. Born to a middle class family, they saved up enough to send her to one of the prestigious military academies of the Nation, the only place one could study bending in any sense.

For years she suffered through the hours of combat instruction, finding she was pretty good at it, but preferring the more meditative side of the instruction (as thin as that is in current Fire Nation teachings.) To help, she also turned her attention to the healing arts.

When she reached the age of 12, though, the muttering started. After all, she had yet to so much as cause a flame to twitch. Her grades and performance were acceptable, but no bending would mean that she couldn't continue to attend. Perhaps frustrated with their promising student's proclivites as well, she was placed in a special class that would teach a more esoteric art.

And then the war ended. Without a need for talented front-line soldiers, Su was quickly dismissed as a waste of resources and kicked out on the street. For a time she wandered, healing minor ailments for enough to survive walking from town to town through the recovering Fire Nation before she ran into a man with a bird mask...

Natalia: Okay. Another Firebender is fine with me.

Su Jiang: I like it. The only problem is that, mentioned in the Campaign info section, this is before the Hundred Years War. Kyoshi is the Avatar here. In fact, she's only been Avatar for 50 or so years. Thats another 160 years before Roku is even born.

Are we doing Traits?

Dionoclese:

Str 12 -2
Dex 12 -2
Con 14(+2) -5
Int 11 -1
Wis 16(+2) -10
Cha 10(-2)
Ability Score Racial Traits: Dwarves are both tough and wise, but also a bit gruff. They gain +2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, and –2 Charisma.
Medium Creature so No Problems there
Size: Dwarves are Medium creatures and thus receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Type: Dwarves are humanoids with the dwarf subtype.
Base Speed: (Slow and Steady) Dwarves have a base speed of 20 feet, but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.
I'm assuming I won't need languages?
Languages: Dwarves begin play speaking Common and Dwarven. Dwarves with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon. See the Linguistics skill page for more information about these languages.
Defense Racial Traits
Are these Really going to be used?
Defensive Training: Dwarves gain a +4 dodge bonus to AC against monsters of the giant subtype.
Hardy: Dwarves gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.
This one I imagine will.
Stability: Dwarves gain a +4 racial bonus to their Combat Maneuver Defense when resisting a bull rush or trip attempt while standing on the ground.

Feat and Skill Racial Traits
I'm not seeing a real issue with these as far as unusability
Greed: Dwarves gain a +2 racial bonus on Appraise checks made to determine the price of non-magical goods that contain precious metals or gemstones.
Stonecunning: Dwarves gain a +2 bonus on Perception checks to notice unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors located in stone walls or floors. They receive a check to notice such features whenever they pass within 10 feet of them, whether or not they are actively looking.

Senses Racial Traits
Honestly this makes me think of Toph
Darkvision: Dwarves can see perfectly in the dark up to 60 feet.

Offense Racial Traits
Not really usefull...Maybe it's a leftover FireNation hatred? Edit : Nvm
Hatred: Dwarves gain a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against humanoid creatures of the orc and goblinoid subtypes because of their special training against these hated foes.
Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves are proficient with battleaxes, heavy picks, and warhammers, and treat any weapon with the word “dwarven” in its name as a martial weapon.

Earth Bender
‘Earth’ Element Feat
You can command and control the earth to move as if alive with the power of you will.
Duration: Instantaneous
Range: 10 ft. per your chakra level
Effect: You fire a blast of gravel earth at your opponent inflicting 1d6 points of non-lethal physical damage per your chakra level plus charisma modifier. This is a ranged attack roll, no saving throw to
resist this damage, though armor and other forms of physical damage resistance apply. If the target of this attack is not wearing eye protection he must also make a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 +
chakra level + cha mod.) be blinded for a number of rounds equal to one-half your chakra level. Although you can use this power with multi-attack, you cannot attack the same target with this power more than once per round.

Children of the Rock
Earth element masters draw much of their power from the earth and stone.
While your feet are in contact with rock or stone you can enhance your damage by +2 circumstance bonus on kata damage, but if you are submerged in water to are unable to use earth abilities.

Backstory:

Dionoclese, Dion for short, is an Earthbender who never quite lets on as much as he knows. Tending to be Quiet Dion get's overlooked a lot but has enough talent to be useful in the basic farmwork, and house contruction. His father has high hopes for him to join the mail system. Dion just wants to do something that requires more of a brain. He wants to do something that requires real talent in earth bending. Something that will make him work hard at it. When a strange man in a Bird Mask shows up offering power and control? Dion only asks when and where.

Yeah, I w#s trying to remember which era it was Long week at work that is, thankfully, over. On the other hand, I know Kiyoshi fought off at least one major warlord in her time. The conflict she was training for could have been a pre-emptive one with him instead.

Here's my air bender so far...
I'm ok with starting knowing the Sokka type.
No crunch yet, jsut working up an avatar and char name.

Alright, Hragas:

Yes, two traits.

I'm not gonna lie, you may or may not find a large being somewhere. And you may or may not find poison somewhere. You just don't know when or where.

And speaking of Toph, there's a Kata for that.

Find some kind of roleplaying reason for your slower speed.

Su Jiang: No problem. Don't forget that the Warlord she fought was an Earthbender, and wanted land.

Li Wu Zhen: Alright. I await your backstory.

Questions
1.So is that a no on Darkvision?
2.The Hatred bonus how is that one applicable to this world?

Answer:
Dion is Build like a tree, He's shorter than most people and with his thick body he can't run as fast but he can probably run longer.

Also going to change Stats to
Str 14
Dex 10
Con 14(+2) 16
Int 10
Wis 16(+2) 18
Cha 10(-2) 8

Seems to fit the character more, Emphasis on bending, not on charisma and a physical strength but not speed. IE not dextrous.

GM Tirq wrote:
Su Jiang: No problem. Don't forget that the Warlord she fought was an Earthbender, and wanted land.

Yeah. I'm thinking that what happened here was that one or two members of the Fire Nation's council decided this was a worrying development and went into full-on militarization mode, probably without the Fire Lord's approval and possibly over his specific objection. While the Warlord just wanted more land, a few 'hawks' were worried that he would decide that he wanted Fire Nation resources when he was done with his current campaign in the Earth Kingdom.

Which also explains why they were so quick to kick Su to the curb when the "threat" was revealed as the nonsense it was. They didn't want to kill a bunch of kids attending a legitimate school, but at the same time having that many training warriors in a peaceful era supported by an effective Avatar would be . . . problematic, especially when said Avatar gets word of it.

Pay attention, Hragas. Now, imagine, a monster crawls from behind, with a giganic sword in one hand. You see this monster in time and are able to strike it. But... you feel as though you may see his moves before he does them. Your fist knows that clenching too tight will not deal as much internal damage, and that he will dart to the left when he doges.

Su Jiang, makes sense to me. Just make sure you put your stats and feats down in the tab for ease of use.

Right. Give me 30 minutes or so for the full sheet.

Yea, that is better. :P
I'll work on setting up a character thingy hear real quick like

Edit: Do we get starting gold?

Background stuff:

"I got it!"
"Seirin, no!"
*smash*
"Oops. I didn't have it. Sorry, Mama."
Through clenched teeth, "Seirin, if you spent half as much enthusiasm on your bending lessons as you do on helping around the shop, you'd be a much bigger help."
"I said I was sorry! It was just one pot...I know! I'll help you make another one! It's sure to go faster with two people instead of just one right?"
"Just....make this delivery for me. I promise it will go much faster if you are not helping."
With a heavy sigh, "Yes, Mama."

Seirin is around sixteen years old and her family makes pottery, using firebending to keep the kilns at just the right temperature. They only have very limited skill, but Seirin has been evaluated as having much greater potential. If only she would actually use it.:)

I'll get the character made over the weekend most likely. But I figured I'd share a little glimpse of what she's like. :)

Sheet updated.

lynora: I can't wait for this next audition.

Su Jiang: I like it.

Also, there will by 2 aliases for myself. One will be the Person with Bird Mask. There will be 4 NPCs sharing this alias, all story important. Then there will be this one, for everyone else. I don't want to confuse anyone when the game actually starts.
