While those more pious update, then petition the Church for assistance, Maxim remains momentarily outside seemingly enjoying the rain.
Ferget what the feelin' o' rain on yer beard is when trudgin' through the great below... Sorto cleansing like... Gods know I need that sometimes...
Somewhat sodden he enters with a nod and hard smile;
"Might need a mite assistance ridden my blood o' the last o' the venom too Taskerhill. Ain't sure iffen your Cudgelites can help me, or you or Lil' Miss?"
The gun-mage smirks as he wrings out his wet beard;
"Course I'd make a contribution to the coffers an' such. Would only be neighbourly for such a boon... iffen we need to wait til the morrow suits me fine... Got me some midnight reading to attend to..."
He pats Skaven's spellbook with a nod.
If spell casting/restorations are to be done the following day then Maxim plans to do some studying of Skaven's spell book. Once Juraan is back with us, we can divvy loot and he'll visit with his Uncle
Maxim plans to visit Ghelve - quiet place to study and likely best place for Skaven's spell book is in his vault (given the reservoir of spells contained therein)

JJ listens to the priestess with a long face.
"You stay here Ryan. I'll quickly call in and make sure my guests are doing okay, and then head back to the others. I know the dwarves can look after themselves, but I'm worried about Marigold in that place."
He heads back to his digs and checks out how his displaced guests are doing. On the way he'll pick up some food for them. Stables for cooking as well as some instant street food.
"Sorry about the wet, things are a little tense in town at the moment as well. But I brought you some food and stuff for cooking with if you like. I'd stay off the streets for the moment though."

Kikinnin watches as the others go, carrying Juraan out and upwards towards his restoration. He feels confident that Cauldron will provide the means necessary, where his mates might learn a thing or two. When they've grown strong enough to do so, he has no doubt. He sees them growing stronger, their metal made purer through the fires of Life's Forge. Otherwise, he'd have escorted them out.
Turning back to the cavern, the black-beard twists the ring on his finger, and looks down on the the faint green glow of the lake. He lets his breathing slow, focusing his hearing on any strange echoes of sound. Initially, he listens for sign of stirring by the kopru, uneasy that such a creature still roams the ruins with them. Eventually, he starts making his own noises, and listens to his own echoes for a spell, before growing quiet again. He starts to meditate.
Alright, Abadar. Got myself some peace and quiet. Won't last, considering there's more work here to be done, but you mine the mountain too fast, and you run the risk of collapse. So we brace our bearing plates, and strengthen our way. I've got You to thank for Your energies. It helped plenty, though You could have warned me... uh, disregard that. You don't owe me any explanation, I just need to understand it when it comes. I still don't know how exactly this works, but thank You.
Kikinnin finds his hand extended, out towards the cavern expanse, as if he expects a divine hand to take it and shake it. He retracts it swiftly, looking over his shoulder, should someone have seen him in the act.
He heads back into the winch house, and rummages through his backpack, pulling some jerky from a cannister, and ripping a good piece to chew, searching for his waterskin next, before the salt sets off his thirst. For the brief time he spends tamping down his hunger, the noise of his jaw clicking keeps him from forming new questions for his new God.
Eventually, he wanders back out to the ledge, but not before he ties one end of his Rope of Climbing to the cage, the other to his waist. He stands, then he sits on the ledge, his feet dangling over the side. He faces the expanse again, imagining that some small part of Abadar might fit within it. He only needs His Ear. Pulling out his axe, he starts honing it, while he continues the conversation, trying to hone his thoughts, too.
You know, my Far used this blade, protecting Malachite. What am I saying? Of course, You know. You oversee everything, right? You probably have dozens more stories than I ever heard, how this blade did its noble work. Now it's mine. Now it and me continue on, making our own story, doing what I hope is noble work, only... only, my Far's not here to hear... to hear the new stories... The black-beard's vision begins to blur, as his eyes well up. A quick squeeze of his lids, and his sight restores, though he needs to wipe the blade, before he continues.
I miss him, Abadar. You took him... uh, sorry. Not Your fault. I didn't mean that, it's just... he left us too soon. Barely got my beard full grown, never saw his beard turn grey. That, to me at least, is a deep shame. Kikinnin sighs deeply, gripping the handle of his axe tightly. Abadar, do You think... do You think he'd be proud of me, of what I've done, since he died?
Of course I am, Kik.
Kikinnin yelps, and releases his axe reflexively, as if it burned red-hot from the fires of the forge. The sound of his surprise reverberates throughout the cavern, as he watches his weapon plummet towards the stagnant waters below.
Except, it doesn't.
Instead, the weapon floats, mid-air, with a golden light defining its shape in the darkness.
Careful, now. You're not a swimmer, what with that armor.
Kikinnin scrambles to his feet, almost toppling over the edge, himself. He manages to remain at the same level as his hovering axe.
"Far? Is... is that you? Is that really..."
Of course, Son. Now, listen. I don't have much time left this day to explain everything, but suffice it to say, Abadar is quite pleased with your work. As am I. So much so, that He's brought me over, if only for a little, to strengthen my... uh, our... well, your blade, when you call for it. Be reasonable, alright?
The axe floats towards Kikinnin, eventually reaching him. As the dwarf takes back his weapon, the golden light fades to nothing.
"Reasonable. Be. Reasonable." Kikinnin looks down on his axe, turning it over, shaking it a little, and listening. "Far? Hey. You still there?" When no answer comes, Kikinnin nods slowly, his mind buzzing from all the eschatological implications of this most recent conversation. He knows that he just spoke out loud, where something tells him it wasn't necessary. His ears cock, trying to hear echoes of his father's voice, not truly believing that he only heard it in his head. He stands at the ledge for a long time after, chiseling this moment to memory, not wanting to lose a single shard of it.

Ghelve's receive you with interest "Hello Maxim! Sure you can take a sit in my office. What else can I offer you? Some tee perhaps?"
When you show up the spellbook the little gnome stands by your side "Oh, those seem like advanced spells Master Maxim. Can you teach me some of the spells. I might use them on my locks"
When you hit home Tessa Marsh is cooking dinner. It smells to pasta with mushrooms. Sara appears to receive you "JJ!" she smiles and gets into the kitchen "Mom! JJ is back! We will need an additional dish!"
The small family will share dinner with you, Sara and Denny show great enthusiasm on their discoveries about the city "The Crater Lake is enormous and terrifying! I saw how it ate one of the small huts built nearby just this afternoon" explains Denny. Sara gets a bit more serious when she explains "I have been looking for a job, but it seems difficult. I have already checked in all taverns" she suddenly seems to realize about your bruises "But look at you. Where have you been JJ? Are you ok?"
As the voice fades and the axe returns to normal, you do feel the rope tightening. Looking past the green lake you do observe at least six men in the beach discussing something. The cage stops again but another man comes to the winch and starts operating it back. The rope tightens again, menacing to pull you over the edge of the ledge.
Accepting the wands Jenya pass them over to Rufus "Quickly, get the help of a couple apprentices and try to save the worst of the waters raising. I will take care of the Stones" she looks towards the family then to Ryan "I guess you need to rest Ryan before pursuing the rest of the wands"

Maxim steps from the rain;
"Aye tea would be dandy Master Ghelve... I've somethin' to warm it up with here too!"
He grins and produces his hip-flask.
Settling in, the gun-mage and the locksmith pour over the spellbook. Maxim nods at Ghelve's question;
"Aye no problem. Fill yer boots my friend..."
Maxim takes a gulp of rum-tea and pats the spellbook;
"Got this from an evil little swine by name o' Skaven. Seem's he was a powerful mage... Not that it help him in the end! Har!"
The dwur flashes a hard smile, draws his finger theatrically across his beard, then taps the pages again as he focusses;
"Some o' these enchantments I'll find tough to learn myself Master Ghelve, hence why I'd appreciate if you could keep the book here... in yer vault whilst we decipher its secrets?"
Under normal circumstances learning a new spell requires a straight up Spellcheck (DC15+Spell Level). Can Maxim (or Ghelve) do Aid Another w/ spellcraft - or is it more of a roleplay fluff that he'd try and teach Ghelve more powerful spells?

Kikinnin Rouradont |

Kikinnin flinches at the all-too-real tugging on the Rope, from the cage. He appreciates the notice, moving back to untie the Rope from its tether, and checking on Ryan's ropework, which should hold against the cable car's operation, until the others return. If it doesn't seem to have the strength, Kikinnin goes to the winch, and uses leverage to make sure it can't turn, by either wedging something into it, or placing something to block its turning, letting physics do its job against any strength being applied to the other side of the pulleys down by the lakeside.

Ryan Taskerhill |

Ryan simply nods at Jenya's dismissal, he was tired an a good night's rest would be beneficial. First though he spent some time withing the church library, searching for historical clashes before involving the undead and golumns.

With the evening coming to a close, Ryan retires to his bed, comforted that the drooling statue would be well cared for til morning.
The daybreak found him in the courtyard, enjoying a bit of sparring before he was to meet back with Jenya about Juraan. For all he tried the warhammers center of gravity was NOT the same as his mace.
At the appointed time he meets back with Jenya, fed both in mind and body.

He looks reluctant to waste time eating but the food smells so good and the company fresh and not covered in blood.
"I'd have to eat and run. I really can't stay long. I just wanted to make sure you were all okay"
JJ pulls up a chair and does what he can to make a good impression on Sara and Tesa (were there other children, I thought so but can't remember).
However he quickly makes his apologies once the meal is over and leaves. "I'd love to stay, but work calls."
As he heads back to the cavern there is a bit of a spring in his step though.

GM Rutseg |

Ghelve nods with interest "I can save it in my vault sure. I hope it will not bring me extra more troubles"
It is more like fluff, about the wizard amateur can improve his locks
The winch and the strands suffer under the increased tension as more and more men sum up to move the cage. Kikinnin adds his own strength, taking a small piece of wood to block the gears.
When the winch seems almost at the point to break you do overhear shouts at the far beach. The tension ceases and you peek at the beach to find out the Kopru out over the sand and the men dispersing and running towards the central door.
They all disappear into the structure and close the door.
What exactly do you check about undead?
The Marsh family are a bit upset that you have to leave again, but they do understand. Sara comes to you at the door "Take this. It is not much, but I hope it helps" placing half the bread on one of your bags, then kissing you in the cheek before you leave.

Juraan can count his hours trapped as having rested too

Ryan searches firstly for any info concerning bone creations, thinking this is a bone golem, having heard in his studies that wizards employed golems for guards. Then if he had enough time he would further investigate the spawns of Kyuss,

Ryan claps Juraan on the back as he begins to realize he is returned to his former self, What's more even better, lvl 5

Sorry for the lack of posting, work has been a booger! I'm going to say that MG decided to come back up from the caverns for a bit as well but might've made it back before some of the others do.
After having made sure that Kikinnin would be okay to keep watch in the caverns while they were gone Marigold follows the others up and out, making sure to help them get Juraan to the safety of Abadar's temple before parting ways with them for the evening. Although she'd planned to maybe stop by Bluecrater before returning to the caverns, her feet once again take her to the church of Sarenrae instead.
Slipping in quietly, she takes a seat on one of the benches near the back of the sanctuary. It was blessedly silent; she'd probably already missed the evening service but that didn't bother her. She was simply grateful to have a place to sit and gather her thoughts for a few minutes.
Lady Dawnflower, things are getting worse here in the city. It seems like there's evil, wicked people and creatures hidden in every corner like roaches - and no matter how many we kill we keep finding more. Are we really on the right track or is there something we're missing?
She sighs. She had a feeling that they would probably have to find their own answers to that, but she couldn't help but wonder just the same. Still, she already felt a little better for having come to the church and she smiles.
We're all getting stronger, even me. And braver. Maybe that's thanks to you, or Abadar, or maybe it's from having something to fight for. Maybe it's a little bit of everything. Either way, thank you.
With a start, she suddenly realized that more time had passed than she'd anticipated. The sky was nearly dark and there would be no visit to Bluecrater today.
Ah well, maybe tomorrow, she muses to herself as she heads out of the temple and back towards the caverns to meet up with the others.

GM Rutseg |

Ok, got it!
You do research about both constructed guardians and animated skeletons. If this is an animated creature it is likely resistant to cold and most weapons not bludgeoning. If instead it is a golem build with arcane magic, it is immune to most magic. In both cases they are mindless creatures resistant to mind-affecting effects and dump on their tactics following orders strictly. Similarly they both are resistant to most physical effects, like stunning.
You check your sources about the Spawn of Kyuss but find little thing past what you already knew before.
Your need of rest soon becomes unbearable and you are forced to look for bed.
Marigold reaches back the caverns feeling better after her visit at the church, were the Dawnflower almost seemed to smile to her blessings.
She finds out JJ and Kikinnin who are talking about some of the hillfolks having attempted to assault the cage and when Kikinnin was almost to fail to keep the control of it they ran away scared of the Kopru raising from the waters and attacking them.
They have been stationed within the structure ever since, without any further attempt to leave the caverns.

Kikinnin rests a bit easier with JJ's return, as well as the return of miss Marigold. He taps on Ryan's rope, disappointed that it proved ineffective, all by itself. He's glad for the extra strength, should the hillfolk come out of hiding again.
"Interesting bit, with that water creature being useful. It's evil, and has its own purpose here, so we should keep our eyes peeled for more of them."

_JJ Surabar |

"I just hope there are not too many, if it really does have mind control powers..." shudders JJ.
"I wonder how the professor is doing? On the plus side Tesa baked fresh bread!" she shares out the loaf.

Just lost the previous post, trying again short version
After they have taken time to eat, Ryan gathers up some breads and cheeses, along with some fresh fruit for the others. Stopping by the chapel he offers a prayer up for himself and his companion, leaving a donation before gathering up Juraan and heading out to meet the others.
Once below he hands out the bread, cheese, and fruit unaware that JJ had brought some as well. "Kikinnin, how'd the night fare?"

Kikinnin Rouradont |

"I wonder how the professor is doing? On the plus side Tesa baked fresh bread!"
Kikinnin reaches for the fresh bread, enjoying the soft interior. He waves his crust at JJ, in appreciation. "Should tell her she's a kind soul, making bread like this." The black-beard waits until he's fully consumed the chunk of loaf, then shakes his facial hair clean.
"Kikinnin, how'd the night fare?"
"I'd say well enough, since we hadn't taken care of that lake monster. Had several hillfolk try and use the cage. They almost overcame your ropework, and my strength, before the thing came out of the water, and chased them away. Might be we destroy the creature last, and rid this place of its evil."
...
Getting to the beach, Kikinnin moves a little south, taking the door that avails itself to them just west of the beach winch house. He listens a moment at the door, just to be sure, then makes sure everyone is ready to reenter, before trying the door.

That thing is outnumbered if it goes into the ruins alone, so it wants us to murder our way through the complex, so it can go back to skulking through this once-was home. Probably attacked 'em, and got injured for its attempt. You don't pet a rabid dog on the head, when you want to praise it for killing the rats you were trapping. I admit nothing, nor will I credit the creature, the next time we cross paths again. For your paralysis, I decided better on attacking it at the time. 'Cross purposes?' Hah. Missed to react to this previously
The read magic allows you to easily understand the whole book and your skill is enough to copy the spells you wish.

You carefully check the door before opening after no sound is heard. The room contains a table and several chairs, one of them lays turned over the floor. Over the table a set of dice is layout as if someone abandoned a game hastily.
You turn your attention to the eastern door and check it carefully finding no traps or sounds. You open the door.

Hundreds of thin white cords stretch from wall to wall in this chamber, all about six inches off the ground. The cords make a tangled sheet, and it looks nearly impossible to pass through the room without stumbling.
You do recognize this strings as the same material that compose ettercap webs.
You look up at the ceiling to discover a large web ready and prepared. Using Skaven's keys, Ryan will be able to open the western door.
K20. SOUTHERN ARMORY
The walls of this room are loaded with weapon and armor racks. Swords and bows hang from pegs, and a dozen suits of armor hang on the far wall. A barrel of arrows and two small wooden kegs sit behind the armor stands.
The small kegs hold cheap ale. The weapon racks contain 12 longswords, 6 rapiers, and 8 longbows. A barrel in the corner holds 120 arrows. The armor stands hold nine suits of studded leather armor and four suits of chainmail. The ale is particularly cheap (5 gp per barrel) and hardly worth the cost of transport.
At the northern front, JJ succeeds to untangle from the web and opens a path slashing with his swords. After checking the door he opens it to a central area.
K12. MAIN ENTRANCE
The ceiling of this large room rises in a forty-foothigh dome; the floor is polished smooth. Water from condensation runs down the wails, and a pair of large braziers to the northeast and southeast provide smoky light. A long table with a dozen chairs dominates the center of the room.
Juraan and Ryan throw some acid rays at the webs, but they hardly seem to damage the strings. It would take hours to dissolve the strings in this way, but JJ has already shown a way through and a little patience will allow the party to navigate the web.

_JJ Surabar |

"Wow...this place is plush. Pity about the water." notes JJ.
"I don't suppose any of those weapons back there were special were they?" he asks Ryan hopefully.
JJ stalks though the grand meeting room, avoiding the corridor that leads to the guarded corridor.
"If we go through there, we should check they have not stationed more archers in that room we cleared out." he suggests before listening at the north western door.

Maxim Snaphånce |

K20
Maxim pauses momentarily to taste the cheap ale. He wrinkles his nose in disgust at the tepid note of the brew;
"Ain't Black Fire Ale bror... More's the pity..."
He then follows along with the others in JJ's wake...

Ryan Taskerhill |

At JJ's question,"Good question"
Ryan returns to the room casting an appraising eye over the room while the others check out the ambush site.

Kikinnin Rouradont |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

"Ain't Black Fire Ale, bror... More's the pity...""Hillfolk, bror. Can't imagine them rustling up the good stuff. Remind me to rustle up the good stuff when we come up for air."
...
Kikinnin slowly works his way through the webs, following JJ's lead. "Yeh, the lead out hall likely has slits on both sides of the aisle. After you, JJ."

Marigold Montajay |

"What s-sort of architect b-builds complexes like this?" Marigold grumbles as they continue to work their way through the numerous rooms and tunnels. "R-rooms upon rooms and tunnels and the whole thing sp-sprawls the length of C-Cauldron it feels like! They m-must've b-been drunk..."

_JJ Surabar |

"Didn't that creature say this was built by his people? Who knows how alien their thoughts are..."
If he doesn't hear anything and sees no signs of traps, JJ will go through that north western door.
