"Well, the more we understand... the less we understand. Maybe this explains how Na..." he stops himself before naming the demon. "The demon came to this area to begin with. That Uncle Alek may be trapped in the Abyss.... That is not good. But doesn't mean we should give up on him. If anyone can survive that place it will be uncle Alek.." this last statement sounds more like he is trying to convince himself than anything else.

"Ryan, how long before we can head back. I've picked up a Giantish dictionary that will help if we meet any more similar inscriptions."

And an 'excuse' for his sudden pick up of giantish from levelling up!

"Do you think I could grab a meal with Sara?"

Walking with the others towards the front door, knowing they would be on their way to Bluecrater Academy, Ryan stops them. "I'd like to use the same grace on you that was used on Kikinnin and Maxim, I'll know how you are throughout the day." Cast Status on the 3 of them as well

Waving bye to them he turns back to Ruphus.

"Ruphus, I have a lot of research to do within the library at the Cusp of Sunrise if I can gain access, leaving here I'm going to ask my uncle to sponsor me. Can you find some well trusted initiates to join yourself in seeing what if any references we have in our own Church library for the spell weavers? Six-armed creatures"

Though she can't help but smile a little as JJ begs to take his leave for the rest of the evening, the little halfling has no plans to call on Anafa or her brothers and sisters at the orphanage - not tonight. Maybe she'd go pay the Temple of Sarenrae a visit, instead?

"If we've d-done all we can do today, then I g-guess we're free to go about our own r-respective business until tomorrow m-morning," Marigold nods. "I think...I think I m-might go visit the temple of S-Sarenrae b-before I go home. Should we m-meet back up at Ryan's r-room in the m-morning then?"

"Words as deep as the earth itself bror. Keep fergittin' all that wisdom rattlin' around in that anvil-head o' yours!"

He flashes a hard grin;

"Still can't lose the itch that we're patsies fer powers unseen from either side. Hell's Teeth I know there's things nefarious that need puttin' down, but ain't trustin' the plays o' Celene nor this Chisel mob..."

The gun-mage fishes out a stogie and sparks it up;

"Hear ya on Davked. Old boy's been got at by one of our puppet masters... We need to cut them strings or take him out if needbe. Iffen it's the latter we got a passel o' problems unless we can expose his corruption."

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

Ryan (about spellweavers research):

The information on the spellweavers is sparse and obscure, but after your findings on Jzadirune, a spellweaver Vault it seems Jenya has gathered some books in the matter. With Rufus help you are able to uncover the following facts:

Spell weavers are mysterious six-armed beings with an uncanny control over magic. They are exceptionally rare and mysterious, typically encountered only when they appear to steal magic items for unknown purposes. Spell weavers usually act alone, but on rare occasions, small groups of spell weavers perform highly coordinated raids to achieve their objectives, using magic to hide or disguise themselves in humanoid society.

Spell weavers never speak, except to utter a strange language of whistles and clicks as verbal components when they cast spells. They speak only with their own kind, through a silent combination of telepathy, sign language, and the shifting colors and patterns of the chromatic disks that all spell weavers possess, allowing them to convey hours of conversation in mere moments. The only communication spell weavers make with other races is the occasional cryptic, rambling written message left for other races to find after their raids are complete.

Spell weavers with class levels are fairly common. Most take levels as sorcerers, almost exclusively favoring the Arcane bloodline. A few also take levels of rogue or fighter so as to enter the arcane trickster or eldritch knight prestige classes. Divine spellcasters are unknown among spell weavers, as their race is strictly atheistic.

The history and motivations of the spell weaver race is unknown. The very rare cases in which spell weaver communications have been deciphered hint at an ancient empire that vanished mysteriously, and those who try (and inevitably fail) to make telepathic contact with spell weavers sometimes tell of visions of great step pyramids, hundreds of feet tall, amid the temporary insanity induced by the spell weavers’ alien minds. Bas reliefs from ruined ziggurats of ancient Ninshabur depict six-armed figures that some sages identify with spell weavers; these beings, called the annunaki in the Ninshaburian language, were believed to be a race of gods who helped lift Ninshabur out of barbarism and taught them the secrets of building pyramids. Finally, though the lost continent of Sarusan is a mystery to sages everywhere, the veil that prevents magical scrying of its location has briefly parted at times, giving diviners passing glimpses of a great triangular structure somewhere in the continent’s vast, arid outback. What any of these clues might mean, none can conclusively say.

Kikinnin hears Maxim out, wondering what position he takes on Celeste. "The Chisel is men, mostly, but there's something... other... with the strange woman. Not like JJ gets all twitterpated over her, it's just that she seems to have a deeper understanding of events. Maybe she's waiting for us to demonstrate our worthiness, I don't know."

The black beard shifts uncomfortably in the seat of his armor. "The angel we just met- we certainly have eyes on us from the greater powers. For the work we do, are you prepared to pass into the Boneyards, in doing it? Feels like we might be asked to give our lives for something larger than we can see."

When Maxim offers a cigar, Kikinnin puts a hand up in polite decline. "Far enjoyed his tabac, but he always smoked at the dinner table. Felt like it tamped down my taste, just chewing the air around him. Mor also complained that kissing him was like licking the ashtray." The black beard wrinkles his nose with a snort. "Figure I'll need all the help I can get courting a female, I don't need to give 'em excuses not to go nose to nose."

"It feels strange, not having the others right at hand, but it does give us the opportunity to jaw about 'em. We at all concerned about Marigold, and her Mark? Haven't come to a decision about JJ jumping to drink from the Fountain, and the kind of risks he might take without thinking, come what may. At least Juraan and Ryan seem to have their heads on straight. And Marigold, of course. She's our check on JJ. I just don't know if we need a check on her... You know anything about the symbol, and what it means?"

Ryan thanks both Ruphus and Jenya for their help and foresight. Taking his notes he goes to meet the others.

"What did you guys find out? It seems that the spellweavers always needed a chromatic disk device for their casting, perhaps we need one too to operate the mirror correctly. I wonder...perhaps one might be found at Tygot's place.......Oh yeah sure JJ, go see Sarah, just remember we're not here for a date, Kikinnin and Maxim are waiting for us. Be back here by midnight. Watch your back."

"Reckon ye have the right o' it... There's no doubt we're in a game o' power, just all the main players ain't revealed their hands... yet."

Kikinnin's direct question on sacrifice gives him pause;

JJ yawns, and looks around the room, glad to see Maxim and Kikinnin unharmed.

"Well... we learned a bit...Mostly about numbers." he starts.

Taking out the plate he points to it, section by section.

"On the left side of the plate, three scenes are depicted. These three scenes should be read from bottom to top. The bottom scene depicts the ogre slaves of the spell weavers toiling to build the planar travel installation."

His finger moves up the plate.

"The next scene up depicts the same ogres, empowered by something called the Amaranth Elixir and granted great strength to aid in their work. I wonder if that is what I drank. It certainly gave me strength."

The finger continues up.

"The topmost scene shows the planar travel installation in its completed glory. The spell weavers' leader is depicted on the right side of the plate; he holds something referred to as the "Starry Mirror" above his head. An artifact able to access the travel installation. A last engraving details quickly that the machine malfunctioned and created the Demonskar on a explosion that destroyed the area and opened a breach to the Abyss. From all the travel sites a single location seemed to remain working. A string of ciphers under the depiction of the Starry Mirror represent numbers, like coordinates of some type. These numbers are, in order: 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, and 3. There are no instructions on how the coordinates work. "

Ryan borrows the Hegemonic Plate from JJ a moment to study it. Then turns to study the throne sitting in the middle of the room.

The texts that Jenya had found since we learned about the Spellweavers in Jazridune indicated they always used the Chromatic Disk in their spells, if they used this throne it would stand to reason there's a place to place the disk on the throne, it looks as if something similar is depicted in the picture here at the top on the left."

GM, is there a slot the disk might be placed in, on top of the throne.

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

Now that Ryan examines the throne more closely, there is a disk similar to the one of Tygot in there. It radiates a soft magical gleam, but reisists all attempts to remove it from place. The artifact seems active.

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

JJ:
Yes, JJ still feels invencible.

The mirror does not seem to respond to JJ's command. Instead it just shows a room with different mirrors of the same colors represented in the room's floor mosaic.

Frustraded, JJ stands up and approaches the mirror itself. Tentatively he reaches out and tries to push himself into the mirror as if it were a doorway rather than a solid surface...

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

When JJ touches the Starry Mirror he finds that it is actually a vertical surface of cold, reflective liquid, which can be passed through with ease.

The young man boldly pushes himself into the mirror before anyone else can react.

JJ:

1d6 ⇒ 2
You appear in a pentagonal room. The room is empty and you cannot see anyone here. The ambient light is orange color.

On each of the five walls there is a mirror exactly like the one you trespassed in the Starry Mirror. Each mirror reflects a room exactly like yours but the ambient light is blue, yellow, red, violet, or green instead of orange.

Others (Starry Mirror):

JJ disappears into the mirror without leaving a trace.

The mirror:

JJ looks around in confusion and then takes in the scene. For a moment he thinks about waiting, but then he remembers Alek sitting waiting for who knows how long. Looking around he recalls the diagram on the floor and, staff in hand, steps into yellow mirror.

[ooc]And assuming he ends up in a yellow room, he follows the colours he remembers in turn, green, blue, violet, and if necessary orange until either he finds Alek, something unusual, or he comes back to what he beleives is his 'starting' room.

GM, by 'without a trace' does that mean we can not see JJ within the mirror as we see Alek

Looking intently into the Starry Mirror you see five pentagonal windows floating under its dark surface. Four of them show nothing but dull white light.
The fifth shows an indistinct image of Alek Tercival sitting next to a large metal door in a stone wall, his expression filled with despair.
There is no trace of JJ.

JJ:
One after the other you jump in the mirrors always landing in a room with the light of the same color you entered. When you step into orange from the violet room you find yourself in an orange room just exactly as the one you first arrived in.

In the mirror:

JJ scratches his head for a moment. Taking out a copper coin he puts it down in the orange room.

Well, those numbers must mean something. Maybe they refer to colours?
But where to start?
He looks around. Gretta always said to start at the beginning, but there was no beginning in a circle... so ... maybe here?

He thinks back to the room he started in.

Right, third color from orange...yellow, green, blue.
He steps through the blue mirror this time.
then.. what were those numbers? 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, and 3

Looking around, he counts again. yellow, green, blue, puple
This time he steps through the purple portal.

Then five..... red. that is easy
Quickly he steps through the red, then the yellow, then green and finally blue one last time. He looks around, hoping to see his uncle and show how smart he is.

Afternoon Dwarves:

Kikinnin spends the rest of the day, conversing with Maxim, then at times, conversing with his Axe. At first, he looks in the blond beard's direction, making sure he hasn't inspired funny looks, though with Maxim, that's hard to tell.

Eventually, it becomes evident that in talking to his Axe, it sounds like a one-sided conversation between a sønn and a Far. It's mostly an accounting of their travels, and some of the black beard's reservations that they'll ever find an end to the litany of evil stacked against Cauldron and its citizens. It comes off odd, though, if the Axe might channel the dead spirit of Kikinnin's Far, that Pocca wouldn't already sense or know exactly what's gone on, as the Axe has never left the black beard's side.

In one obvious instance, Kikinnin speaks firmly, and the Axe begins a different thrumming, and lights up like a torch. It becomes clear that the dwarf's earlier mumblings were more dress rehearsal, for crafting words that might be said better, given the press of time. While his Axe glows, Kikinnin becomes much more focused, and loses any attention to the room, save for what responses he seems to be waiting for. His initial, reserved body language gives way, and he's slouching comfortably by the time his Axe fades to black.

"We're good. We're headed in the right direction, I have little doubt now." Kikinnin smiles tiredly. "Only glad to have the company of you and the rest, because we're aways from finishing our oath here."

Kikinnin takes advantage of a late afternoon siesta, which speeds the time until the other Watchers return, and the team is united in their full strength.

...

Starry Mirror:

Kikinnin almost reacts quickly enough, as the boy stands from the chair, and begins walking deliberately towards the Mirror. "Damn it, JJ, just wait a little whil... Stones Rolling!!" The black beard barks out a call to danger wholly inappropriate for the current change of pace.

He turns to the teleporters. "Tell us you think you understand your research better than Alek did. If you have a set of numbers '3-4-5-1-2-3', and we have a set of colors, and we have a pentagon's worth of mirrors waiting for us, then we have a match: if those numbers don't climb higher than 5, then we're gonna follow an order to pass through a maze of mirrors, is my guess, and the numbers represent a choice we have to make to pick the right one, one after another."

Kikinnin looks at the floor, and memorizes the colors on the floor, in the order they follow one another with the arrows, and he turns back to the others. "Do we think we know which color matches which number?"

The black beard begins to tie a non-magical rope about his waist, turning to Ryan, and tying the other end to the priest's waist. "If we're gonna go, we can't give JJ too much lead time, otherwise he'll hang himself."

When he's reasonably sure he's heard the others out, in terms of unraveling the riddle of the Starry Mirror, Kikinnin walks forward, and presses through the surface of the Mirror, as did JJ.

He does not, however, rush to do it. He waits to hear each of his friends in their arcane knowledge and study, until it appears the well of knowledge has run dry.

With Orange lighting his current room, Kikinnin doesn't waste time, as he worries he'll need to act as quickly as he can.

Red--->Orange--->Yellow--->Green--->Blue--->Purple--->Red ... Alright, let's do this. We'll see which number is linked to Orange...

Kikinnin picks Yellow next, and moves through its Mirror.

Then Green, then... well, I guess we'll see...

JJ in the mirror:

JJ steps back through the orange mirror, looking around for his coin.

He sits to think, remembering the colour map from the floor of the throne room.

Right, that didn't work. So lets try the next option. Those numbers... 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, and 3. Orage and three steps around the cirlce gives blue, then four more yellow, then five more back to orange. Then one to yellow agaain, two to blue and three more takes us back to orange. Lets try that/[i]

He stands, slipping through the latest series of mirrors as he tries to work his way out of the maze.

GM Rutseg:

It takes Kikinnin several choices to understand that his initial design on moving from room to room fails to establish a general number-to-color assignment. If Orange was '3', and Yellow was '4', and Green was '5'... then exactly which color would be the '1' and '2'? He backtracks on the assumption that his first color was first number, and establishs Purple as '1', and Red as '2', failing to assign Blue any number at all.

So, Kikinnin makes the circuit, to be sure- Orange, Yellow, Green, Purple, Red, then Orange at the last, wondering what will come of his first foray into dastardly puzzle solving...

"JJ?! You there?? I'm trying out different color combinations as I move room to room, but I don't think I've got it yet. Hold on, and I'll try something different next. JJ??"

Also, does Ryan's Shield Other give the priest any inkling of the distance between Kikinnin and Ryan?

Kikinnin:

"Kikinnin.. that you? I've tried a couple of things and want to try a third. Did you pick up my coin? I'm in an orange room. I've tried just working through the colours. And I'v tried using the numbers by going to just that numbered colour, but there are more colours than numbers. I'm going to try and use them as an iterative manner this time."

GM:

Orange and three steps around the circle gives blue, then four more yellow, then five more back to orange. Then one to yellow agaain, two to blue and three more takes us back to orange. Lets try that.

Each time he steps through a portal he'll call out the color to Kikinnin. Starting from his orange room he goes blue, yellow, orange, yellow, blue, orange.

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

Starry Mirror:
For how long do you wait for them to appear in the mirror?

Kikinnin:

You hear JJ's voice see Kikinnin's spoiler in JJ's, you can do same when talking aloud, then enter the mirrors following certain color combination. Each time you enter in a pentagonal room with a color exactly as the one of the mirror you entered. In the end you find yourself back in an orange room.

JJ says " Orange. Blue. Yellow. Orange. Yellow. Blue. Orange. " followed by a few seconds each time.

JJ:

Would you roll a Will save? Remember the elixir penalty
You hear again Kikinnin "JJ?! You there?? I'm trying out different color combinations as I move room to room, but I don't think I've got it yet. Hold on, and I'll try something different next. JJ??"

You again try a different combination. One color after the other you end in a room like the other ones. When you lastly enter the orange one, the room grows dark, illuminated only by dim light streaming in from the five portals on the walls. The light is normal, colorless.
