I'll do what I have always done to my groups.
You roll your dice and if you roll below average you add half the max dice in the end.
So for example... in a d8 1, 2, 3 & 4 becomes 5, 6, 7 & 8
That way you have some variance but even if someone rolls constantly good and another constantly bad you don't have huge wastes of hit dices.
also it keeps your hp fairly high You will need it, some monsters in this AP does not mess around.
I had some instant kills of full hp characters before in this campaign.
Never happened to me .. but just to give you an example, the giant spider in the ship at the start of the adventure deals 1d8+6 with its bite?
If some enemies connects with a critical or later on have a chance of performing a full attack on someone a little squishy things can get nasty pretty quick.

HP: 1d10 ⇒ 7
Edit : Level 2

Gavin d'Bourgemont |

Glad to have you back on board, Bedu!
Gavin's HP: 1d8 ⇒ 8 Woot! 10 hp. That'll help me soak damage while Tessa and Erick kill the bad guys!
I'll try and get leveled up tonight, but it may be tomorrow before it happens...

Bedu the Barber |

Do you want Bedu levelled up too? I was mulling over multiclassing into rogue for the party. It kind of fits with his background as a skill monkey and a larcenous one to boot.
Unless you guys would rather recruit a purpose built one?

Gavin d'Bourgemont |

@ Bedu, if you want to multiclass, I'd say go for it. But don't do it unless it is something you want to do. If you'd rather not, we can fill the role another way, I'm sure. Even if we don't recruit anyone, UMD and a few knock spells will go along way.
@ everyone, what's the plan now? Erick, do you want to speak with the authorities? Gavin can go with you and to the morgue to send Vanthus on his way. What else do we need to do?
Split our treasure, I suppose.
Speak with the Lady about her brother. Anything else?
Gavin will visit his parents as well, once we split our booty.

Erick Bonestihl |

Hope everyone had a good holiday. We all ready to pick back up?

Erick Bonestihl |

I can do that if you like.

Gavin d'Bourgemont |

OK, so, loot:
I couldn't find if the hecueva had anything on him worth taking with us.
We have 8 bottles of Greyport Reserve @ 50 gp and a chest with some things in it to be decided. Is that correct?

Bedu the Barber |

Can we handwaive buying gear or do we need to roleplay that, scarletrose? Either way I will deal with this tomorrow. Running Ravenloft 5E tonight and have make my adventure a bit more scary today.

Gavin d'Bourgemont |

The third contains 4 potions of cure light wounds, 2 potions of lesser restoration, a potion of invisibility, a potion of barksking +3, a potion of cure serious wounds, an elixir of swimming, a wand of mage armor with 12 charges and a small jade coffer worth 300 gp.
Inside this coffer, resting on a tiny velvet cushion there is a brown gemstone with a little strip of paper saying "Earth Elemental Gem".
Kutsya can feel powerful conjuration magic coming from it but cannot identify the gem, although the appearance of the gem is consistent to what she knows abut it, the aura is the right one both in kind and magnitude and she admits that being unable to correctly identify an elemental gem is to be expected given that is magic that goes well beyond her capabilities.Along with the 400 you can fetch for the bottles it's a total of 2800 gold to divide for 5 party members,. so 560gp each.
Thanks, Scarletrose! We have the following to split up/sell:
4 potions of CLW
2 potions of lesser restoration
1 potion of invisibility
1 potion of barkskin +3
1 potion of cure serious wounds
1 elixir of swimming
1 wand mage armor (12 charges)
1 jade coffer (300 gp)
1 earth elemental gem
I don't need the CLW, CSW, mage armor. Invis should go to one of our scouty types, I imagine. I would like the elixir of swimming and/or the potion of barkskin, b/c I can't swim and am a front-liner type. I think the lesser restoration should go to whomever needs them first.
If OK with everyone, I think we should sell the coffer as well, for I assume half price (150gp).
Thoughts?

Bedu the Barber |

The wand is useful if anyone has to take their armour off, for sleep or a swim. Plus it is a force effect which can help against certain critters. Nice little insurance policy and we would only get about ninety gold for it anyway. I say keep it.

If OK with everyone, I think we should sell the coffer as well, for I assume half price (150gp).
The Jade coffer is considered a valuable, so like pretty much the gems and jewelry in general it can be sold at full price.
Besides it was already included in the 560gp each (it's the 60 extra gp each)
Gavin d'Bourgemont |

Aha, thanks Scarletrose. I've updated my character sheet taking this into account.
About the wand, I agree with Bedu. I'm sure we'll find use for it somewhere. Since we'll be on ships at some point, it could be nice to have around.
Unless anyone objects, I'm going to take the elixir of swimming.
Updated loot list:
4 potions of CLW
2 potions of lesser restoration
1 potion of invisibility
1 potion of barkskin +3
1 potion of cure serious wounds
1 elixir of swimming (Gavin)
1 wand mage armor (12 charges)
1 jade coffer (300 gp) (sold)
1 earth elemental gem

Bedu the Barber |

The gem is a major item for the party, but I don't mind who carries it. Bedu as a bard/rogue is going for skills and as a backup healer, support guy so I'd like to take a potion of lesser restoration and clw.
Bedu's stealth is pretty good but that potion of invisibility may benefit someone else as a means of sneaking around or escape.
Barkskin and CSW suit the warriors in my book.
Cheers
P.S. are we handwaiving spending money, scarletrose?

![]() |

I wondered if it would be okay to take a level of sanctified rogue instead of a plain old rogue, it fits with Bedu's personality a bit better and gives him the chance to get closer to a good Katapeshi deity, Sarenrae. Something that may prove beneficial in the long run in this AP?
Not sure if that helps with the affliations idea but maybe the adventure and the party have changed Bedu some.
How does that sound, scarletrose?

Sounds good to me!

Well, it won't be Gavin - even invisible I think people would know what is up if I tried to sneak around! Tessa, Erick, would either of you like a potion of invisibility?
Barkskin and CSW suit the warriors in my book.
Tessa, Erick? Would each like one of these and some CLW/lesser restorations?
@Scarletrose, I'd like to buy a masterwork flail, if I can wrangle one up.

Bedu the Barber |

Bedu is now levelled up.
He has bought the following items with his cut;
masterwork chain shirt
masterwork heavy wooden shield
thieves tools
scrolls of comprehend languages, identify, sleep
30 gold to spread around shadowshore and sunset districts
leaves 12 gold for high living and halfling treats.
Cheers

I haven't played with any of the people applying before, so I can't give you suggestions from that angle.
From the character angle, all would work. The mystic theurge would give us both healing and arcane magic (the arcane we're a bit light on, although Erick can expand that in a level or two).
The gnome spellcaster would give us a big arcane boost. I know as a bard Bedu is technically an arcane caster, but bards are not primary spellcasters, which is what I'm getting at.
The Archer would give us some ranged firepower, Erick's our only real ranged fighter, and he's kind of a one shot wonder on that front.
Honestly I'd like to see a detailed background for each, plus a scene that causes them to 'stand out', like we did for the original characters.

Are you multi-classing?
I'm in line with Erick on a lot of his thinking. I don't know anyone from any of my other games, so I don't have much input there.
I thought Will Murder's backstory was the most interesting, so that character would get my vote there. Dano's was decent as well - I liked the bit about losing his shadow.
I'm of the mind that people should play what they want to play, as you'll get better participation from people that way. So I tend to put more emphasis on those who put in more effort.
But, as roles go, we could use ranged dps and arcane casting, which means Will, and Titus/Alistus if they get their applications finished.

Order of the Tome gets to cast from Scrolls.

Ok I had to dig a little deeper this time and spend some time looking at other aliases of the people who proposed for the party to try and find someone who knows how to roleplay.
Then I do agree on the fact that we should go with whoever put effort on it.
While Alfrazar didn't post much he sent me a few PM linking his background and character sheet to me.
Also there are a few reasons why Lavinia may want to add to the group an elven Druid, so I will go with that.

Gavin d'Bourgemont |

Cool! I'm glad Alfrazar sent you stuff - I was hoping to see the dinosaur druid application.
Hey guys, I'm the new member of the party. I still have to line out one or two thing with the character before I am ready, but I should be all good to go by tomorrow.
Hi, Alfrazar! I'm excited to see your character. I think pretty soon we're going to be heading into a taxidermist's shop to hunt down the Lotus Dragons - a thief's guild that our nemesis, Vanthus Vanderboren is involved with.
Looking forward to gaming with you!

Aha, excellent! You and Bedu can be the wizard!

Thanks, I'm rolling health for me and my dinosaur companion right now. I will be having a Deinonychus as a companion, so it will be fun.
For me:
Level 1: 1d8 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
Level 2: 1d8 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
For animal companion
HD 1: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
HD 2: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
HD 3: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
So according to what i saw posted this would be 11 health for me and 18 for the Deinonychus

the first level is full hp for you (and I'd say the rules for characters apply to your pet as well)
So it's 13 for you and 31 for your pet.
Also, I assume at some point you managed to get a legal permit to keep your pet as it is stated in the adventure that dangerous exotic animals requires one.
When you are ready to go make a Profile for the character and I will introduce you into the gameplay.

Yea, i had that in the backstory. I wasn't really specified but I put in after like a year or two of trying to get him in the city she was able to. Also I am going to put everything into the alias I made tomorrow. I will tell you guys when I am done, and to save myself some trouble I will be doing all of the posting for my character and the dino in the same post.
Good to see you on board Alfrazar, druids are a match for any wizard in my book, especially with a pet like that.
Cheers
Yea, my character will be a ranged druid who will stay back and do stuff while my dinosaur will be ripping people in half

Erick Bonestihl |

Welcome to the game

Erick Bonestihl |

Tessa, did you level up to 2? Or did you just forget to update your tag line with your L2 status?

Tessa Steele |

Erick - I did update my profile, forgot to update the quick stats. Thanks, I missed your comment earlier.
All - Did we get a total for GP we picked up on the last go around? Are we splitting it four ways since Kutsya dropped?
SR - I forgot to mention this earlier. During the downtime Tessa did a little shopping and picked up a cestus and morning star. I shall not be caught empty handed with skellys again.
SR - Now that we have Ismaire (yay!), are you still planning to add that sixth? I know when we discussed replacing her we talked about tentatively adding another? Just curious.

![]() |

No the idea was to not risk to remain in 3.
If Kutsya returned (and she never said she won't to this day)we would be 6 which is the max I would allow.
But 5 is fine.
I would not recruit unless we risk falling to 3 again.
P.s. Kutsya takes her share of course. it's not like she wasn't in parrot island with you :P
