Having been away for nearly a week the people are happy to see their leaders return as are the other kingdom offers. Fortunately it's been quite, after that is the prisoner who was singing a dirge died.

Seraph return to the fort is a quiet one, she doesn't scold the guards. As it was impossible to stop something as heinous as a murder among the prisoners without recognizing the signs. Which of course could have had no outward indicators.

Justinian arises early, feeling refreshed from the first decent night's sleep he's had since the fight in the barrow. His morning ritual is interrupted by the summons to the Council chamber.

'...formal meeting...'

He looks at the gear he has brought with him: the battle worn scabbard, cloak patched from travel, the surcoat with the symbol of Iomedae bearing frequent repair marks. Hardly the stuff for a formal meeting. Still, there was nothing for it...it was all he had.

-----------------------

Justinian stood before the Council, squarely in front of Lady Asta's seat. He listened intently to her words, her offer for a position as Diplomat. Clearly Iomedae had tested him and found him worthy! Here was a chance to bring her light to this new endeavor in the wilds. In certainly didn't hurt that he spent much of his crusading career keeping feuding factions from fighting each other. That should translate nicely to River kingdoms politics as he understood them.

"Lady Asta," Justinian says bowing, "I am honored by your offer, and I accept. The Council has been more than generous to me, and have shown their trust in me. I will strive to be worthy of that trust." He straightens, a smile on his face. It was good to belong...

Month 4 Kuthona

Torod busies himself with helping prepare the city for the winter. He believes that how well they do this first winter will be an important gauge for just how well the fledgling nation is doing.

He makes sure that the outriders are trained and supplied. Their aid may mean life or death for the good folk of the barony.

Torod tries to begin a tradition of hosting dinners. He plans them as casual affairs where those of like mind can meet in a relaxed, family friendly environment.
At least once a month he'll set his table for:
* Erastil's faithful
* Ranking clergy in the city
* Ranking military personnel, including city guard
* Members of the Circle, unless Asta would rather do this
* His friends and other important personages

He will also, continue to try and persuade Jhod and Kressel to join his family.
"Oleg and Svetlana are both Truehearts. Their seat of power isn't even in the Stagfort. They've set a precedent."

"Having us all be in one family would be a boon to the faithful of Erastil. It would show he has provided a strong, stable religion for his followers. Folks take comfort in such things. It expresses his familial teachings."

"We can go out as a family to help and serve the people. The community will see us together and our works will have greater impact. No other faith values family and community like we do. Coming together as a family will give the community an example to look to as we grow and build. Our coming together as a family will show others how to come together as a nation."

People complain that the Mites are evil fey and no good will come from having them as neighbors. Most people avoid the Mites’ lands. The kobolds are somewhat more tolerated, but the people are having a hard time understanding why we are giving prime land away to such creatures."

At this, Asta's arctic blue eyes spark purest crimson, and her expression becomes harsh.

"When we set out to claim these lands, we did not do so waving bloodied weapons and crying out for loot and slaughter," she says. "We set out to found a kingdom. A proper one, not just a gaggle of mud-huts built on the bones of our victims.
The Kobolds and the Mites were here first, and they allied with us. We did not 'give land away', we respected the territory of two civilizations which were already here, and which reciprocated the hand of peace and cooperation. Trust, also, that both the Kobolds and the Mites have much to offer. Both have been veritable fonts of information about the Stolen Lands. The Kobolds are masterful miners, which will be valuable come our next step forward. The Mites are a bridge to the elder Fey who also dwell in these lands, which will be invaluable given recent activity on the part of the Trolls.
If anyone in the kingdom has further concerns, tell them that our allies make us stronger, more fit to survive in a land which is still fraught with danger."

Justinian Doran wrote:
"Furthermore my inquiries with the Swordlords have revealed that they are watching the situation in Stagland carefully. The Council has solved the bandit problem, which was only a third of the total, the remainder being the mites and the kobolds. There is peace along that front for now, but the unexpected way in which the Council achieved peace with the evil humanoids concerns them."[/b]

Asta steeples her fingers and regards the ceiling in a thoughtful manner.

"We should deal with that," she concedes. "Our motivation remains the same; the Kobolds and the Mites both have much to offer for the future of Stagland. We should let the Swordlords know so.... They certainly need to know about the threat of the green-haired Fey, and the fact that our Alliance with the Mites may help us prevent her from rustling up a greater coterie of black-hearted Fey to bedevil our people. Also, they must know of the assistance the Kobolds have given in helping to pacify these lands. They were of great assistance in our siege of this very fortress.
Can you communicate this to them in appropriately diplomatic language, Justinian? Of your courtesy, please draft a document for the Council's review and signing."

Torod wrote:
"Lady Blackheart, I respect the treaty we have with the mite kingdom. However, I am concerned that they would be hard pressed to adapt to our ways. I believe it to be a mistake to have even a small contingent of mites as permanent residents of Stagfort. We obviously need to maintain good relations, though. So perhaps we could send a small retinue to them instead. The right folk might be difficult to locate, but it would be far better than the potential diplomatic pitfalls we would have with the mites having their version of harmless fun within the walls of our beloved city."

"I actually doubt the matter will come up," Asta says, shrugging. "The Mite King seems to prefer isolation over integration, and I personally wish his people luck of it. Still, as you say, we must maintain good relations. Offering an embassy to the Sootscales without giving the Mites the same opportunity would have been a slap in the face after their recent conflict.

Still, if the Mites do send an envoy, we know they have at least one individual who is capable of restraint and not immediately needed at home to Ensure order: Crackjaw. He has met with a favourable response from the priests at the shrine of Erastil, I believe, and was a pleasant enough companion. If the Mite King has more people of his caliber, a Mite embassy might be viable. When the Mite King responds to the offer, we must communicate our preference - for mutual benefit."

Torod wrote:
"Chief Sootscale, Mikmek, and the Sootscale kobolds have proven to be friends and our alliance with them has only strengthened us. That land is theirs and we would be the evil ones if we were to try and take it from them without good reason. Rather we should try to get the Sootscales to join with us. To officially join house Silverwyrm with Stagland with all the rights and responsibilities that entails."
Justinian Doran wrote:
"Fair enough. Hopefully the people of Stagland see it that way. The question I have is: what will you do if they don't? What will you do if your...our...people don't agree? If they do not want a noble house made up of 'evil' humanoids as part of their kingdom?"

"My good Justinian, you ask pointed questions, and you do so for excellent reasons," Asta says. "The harsh truth is that it is far better for the people to start getting used to the idea of having Kobolds and Mites for neighbours now. I will not condone treachery or genocide, and so it is best for everyone to get used to seeing these people, our allies, and acknowledge them as people, rather than monsters to be eradicated. They deserve no less from us. If the people object, then we must explain our choices to them. The moral choice, the ethical choice, and also the choice of being farsighted. As I have said, the Sootscales and the Mites both bring great boons to Stagland, and their help and goodwill are more precious than gold. They should not be wasted."

Justinian Doran wrote:

Justinian takes a moment to catch each member of the council by eye.

"What will you do when settlers begin to move in to those lands to make better lives for themselves and their families? Force them out? Will your argument that 'we will be the evil ones' hold up when you remove a farm family from their home at the tip of a spear? Over kobolds? Think on it, members of the council. Better to have our answers for the people before an incident happens. Because it will happen. It's only a matter of time."

"When the people are ready to expand, they must come to us and accept guidance," Asta says in a firm tone. "I do not wish to appear to be a tyrant, but I also do not wish to betray my given word, nor the treaties we have signed. Stagland is vast and there is ample space for settling and development. We can share with our neighbours and allies, and we will share, as they have shared with us and will share in the future.

I hope we are all in agreement on this."

"Wise words, as always, Lady Asta." Justinian bows. "I will draft a response for the Swordlords at once."

"However, you speak of the people as though they will easily see it your way. I am asking these questions because I have found that they already do not see it your way. I ask because it appears that they are not prepared to 'get used to it'. Remember, these are common folk, many of whom have suffered at the hands of such evil creatures. They do not have your lofty ideals about founding a kingdom. They want peace and prosperity for themselves and their families, and they do not see that as possible alongside such creatures. Even Andoran, my Lady, was founded in bloody revolution. Many a 'proper kingdom' was built thusly.

"The Six Acts tell a story in which Iomedae had to go back on her word to a magistrate for the greater good. I will not bore you with the details, but suffice to say it was the right - if agonizing - choice. Such is the burden of leadership."

"I do not need further answer. Your will is clear. I only advise."

With that, Justinian leaves for the inn, to draft a letter for Restov.

"Tarry a bit, good Justinian," Asta says before the priest can leave.

The Witch Queen drums her fingers on the armrest of her chair, then heaves a small sigh.

"It is probably for the best that the people not be informed as of yet that we face threats from Trolls and maniacal Fey sponsoring assassins and bandit lords. However, do you think the people might be more accepting of our neighbours if we make it public that they are going to help keep the kingdom safe from threats humans do not commonly deal with, and that they will also help make our lands more prosperous, to general benefit?"

Asta's lips twitch into a wry smile.

"I respect your Lady, but I follow Sivanah. I know about illusions and trickery -- and so I also know about the value of truth beneath the veils, even if it is obscured for pressing needs. One day, I hope to hear you recount the Six Acts. Here and now, I will express my hope -- with due respect -- that I may learn from your Lady's example well enough that I do not need to emulate her."

The Witch raises her hands, palms up.

"My word is my bond and my dream is large enough to encompass many types of beings. Time comes and time goes, and if the ensuing generations come to their time with one another, what is extraordinary today may become normal tomorrow. Such is my hope."

Sunset remains aside and aloof to the conversion in the main chamber though she does watch and listen. What thoughts she has she keeps for now, or unless asked. That she absently, occasionally, brushes at the hair over one pointed ear might be of note.

for kingdom building I have build a Library, Claim hex d10, and build a road.

Also, there seems to be more young Sootscale kobolds running around than you recall from first encountering the kobolds. You would estimate the original kobold tribe to be about 40 individuals, now its about 60 after 6 months. Just for comparison Greenhart town list at 2000 people.

Seraph is quiet for many days, dealing with something internally and saying little as she felt she wasn't right to do so. Only agreeing with Asta's decision's quietly and using her oaths daily to ensure that nothing comes against her Liege in the coming months. It was also to ensure the people were in a sound and stable mind.

The ring allows her to work more, something no one could fail to notice. She slept only enough to sustain her and worked for the rest of the time every day. She spent a long time in silent prayer to Arshea at dawn before resting for her needed time. This was so she could be vigilant every night, watching over Asta with the hardened gaze of a warrior. Her gaze piercing the shadows without the need for light from an open flame.

The growing number of kobold and other children brings a smile to her face. Something that had been rare for nearly two months or more outside the walls of the slowly being rebuilt castle. The moment is fleeting. Her happiness summed up in a single tear shed for the success of the fledgling kingdom.

For the People she smiles and puts up an aura of calm serenity. She counsels those that need it and continues to do what she can to unite the population behind Asta. For their soldiers she is hard and methodical as necessary, strict as needed but heavy handed when it came to training. She commonly quoted a simple phrase to remind them why she was so heavy handed. "Hard training, easy battles. Easy training, bloody battles." Though she puts nothing before them that she herself doesn't do, often she was the first in the yard at practice with her heavy blade when she wasn't protecting Asta.

She also used her healing hands to ensure injuries are corrected and gives suggestions to ensure the mistakes are corrected. The preservation of the nation demanded she not be frivolous or light hearted. She had no time for it as she performed her duty as befitting a General among their soldiers and maintained the morale of the people as a local hero.

Justinian returns Asta's wry smile, but his eyes are hard. A lifetime of hard experiences on the borders of the Worldwound are not wiped away by dreams and good hopes. There, nothing was normal, and hope was hard-won by fire and steel. He had learned enough to know that there was a reason no one to date had managed to populate the Stolen Lands. But he voices none of his thoughts. With a bow, he leaves to complete the task assigned him.

So.... we can claim another hex and build, possibly, two things?

My vote is claim hex. Build mine. Build road. For this season.

Much cheers to every one.

Torod pushes hard to make sure the road to Oleg's Tradefort gets finished. He has the Outriders work to make that route safe. He, personally, goes to the Thorn River Camp and spends some time hunting and tracking with Strawberry Deathstrike. Other than that, he spends a lot of time promoting the tenants of his faith among the people.
Torod continues with his dinners.
Sense Motive to aid Loyalty: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Claim hex C11. I'd like to claim C9 the Moon Radish Patch, but it the rules don't make that the best choice at this time.
Build the mine over the shop. The mine costs less and gives more.
Build a road in E9. All roads lead to the Tradefort.
Build a farm in C11. It costs less in C11 than in D10.
