I think everything's done for Fintan, background and crunch. I made the background short and concise this time, but could make a longer version if you'd like.
As a note to everyone: I'll be taking two levels of Fighter (Dragoon archetype) at levels 2 and 3, and then I'll continue going pure Barbarian (Mounted Fury) after that. I also went ahead and dropped a rank into Knowledge (Nobility) because it was fitting and because I figure that might be nice to have in this setting.

Brother Ó Máille |

Is there anything you'd like to see fleshed out more for Ó Máille? Given the discussions we had via pm I decided to choose a different (younger) avatar.

Fintan of Largay |

I have one last question too: what color is the flag of Largay (if there is one)? I'm tempted to have a thin stream of colored cloth dangling from Fintan's spear. Y'know, because it's cool.

Flags did not exist as we know them now. But the Irish did have battle standards to identity troops on the battle field. I would suggest blue for the McGovern, as well as the symbol of summer, which is the green man.

Taking the ooc discussion out of the gameplay thread...
There seems to be some confusion about the politics surrounding Belcoo and Larguay. Basically, Largay is a petty kingdom in the Kingdom of Breifne. And Belcoo is a small village in the petty Kingdom of the Tuath Ratha, which is a part of the Kingdom of Airghialla. Along with the Kingdom of Connaught, Breifne and Arghialla fought side by side against the High King.
I know. That's a lot of kings! Have a look at the campaign page, for a few more clarifications on titles and kingdoms. Irish politics were complicated to say the least! They were all kings, and they were always fighting!
Now, the High King is dead, which means that the alliance between Airghialla and Breifne is no longer valid. This does not mean that Airghialla and Breifne will go to war. But it does mean that Largay raiding Belcoo is not a clear violation of an existing alliance.
Bear in mind that Brehon law was highly contractual, with bards often acting as modern day lawyers.
You also have to imagine that there has been a blood feud between Largay and the Tuath Ratha for many generations. The recent alliance between Breifne and Airghialla does not forgive years of bloodshed.
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask questions in the discussion thread.

Aoife FitzStephen |

In other words we get to go take their stuff and no one can say we broke the laws.
But this also means that if they wish, or if we insult them, they could kill us all without a second though. Well most of you would be killed, most likely back to slavery for Aoife and the church for the Brother. After all most people don't like killing "holy men" of their own religion. Though that isn't really true. They could just kill us all of enslave us all.
This is going to be fun kids! XD

Fintan of Largay |

Sorry about not posting earlier today. Today was my real-time tabletop day. Gonna start preparing a post.

Fintan of Largay |

Welp, just got back from work about an hour ago. Gonna read these posts and try to make Fintan's intentions clear in as few spoken words as possible.

Aoife FitzStephen |

Also I would like to point out the reason I said that is because we are so story driven. We are a Role playing game, not a roll playing game. So a story heavy game is going to have character heavy moments.

Entirely agree. In fact, curious to hear everyone's opinion about combat in general. I am new to pbp, but it seems to me that complex fights that last more than a few rounds could easily drag on forever! Is this simply something that is part of the game, or are there clever ways to avoid this problem?

Padraic Ó Cinnéide |

Sadly i have never met a smart way to handle long term combat. Combat is just long and that is it. Though you can stipulate that PCs get automated if they dont post in x amount of time.

Fintan of Largay |

A few ideas:
1. Average out PC Initiatives and enemy Initiatives (or potentially use the highest roll for each group). One side acts, then the other side acts, in no particular order. This lets the players more quickly (less likely to have to wait on the other players) and means you can have all the enemies act in a single post.
2. Automation when things get slow helps.
3. What you did - having the enemies run away - works for a lot of fights. If they start dragging and the party is clearly winning, having the enemy turn tail and run makes sense and closes combat. In this case I'm not sure if this IS the end of combat so Fintan is pursuing (also because Fintan mad).
Also, as far as fights in general go... I'm cool with a variety of PbP playstyles, including both the "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT" and the "Actually let's avoid fights because it slows things down" mentalities. I'll roll with whatever the group wants.

Amergin the Wise |

Having played "old school" for over twenty years (!), I can't imagine a game without a few good fights... That being said, I was never a fan of tediously long battles.
We'll see how the game evolves, but don't hesitate to say if you find the campaign unbalanced, or if the battles are too short or too long.

Fintan of Largay |

As an aside, if y'all ever want to make sure Fintan does something, just tell him to do it IC. (Example: he'd happily attempt Intimidate on Quinn (or assist the primary intimidater), but he's not going to come up with that idea on his own.)

Brother Ó Máille |

Just double checking, we have two prisoners, for lack of a better term. Sean Quinn and a younger boy, correct? (And the the dead body of the Lord of Belcoo)

Padraic Ó Cinnéide |

Oh I know Sean is a man and not a boy, but he killed his own father and was taken with one shot. Padraic is totally just belittling him.

Brother Ó Máille |

Whoaaaaaaaaa..... Things just got interesting.

Aoife FitzStephen |

Gm, Question: How much is Aoife worth? Using the pathfinder listing for slaves I'd put her at a household slave but the ranges are
Household slave: 50 gold
Common slave: 75 gold
Hard-labor slave: 100 gold
Specialized slave: 500 gold
I thought she might be a common slave, but with this little bit here it seems like the King never wanted her to leave the household at all. Since she was born there she never learned some things that a common slave would already know by going from a free-man to a slave, and I doubt that Aoife knows how to read or write. Though she is good with numbers if you just give her the number.
(Which is where the above average Int comes from.)

Fintan of Largay |

Assuming the post I just made can come before yours in the timeline, GM: may I make a second post where Fintan tries to appeal to his mother as the whipping is going on? It'll probably fail, but hey, Diplomacy +1. Maybe with some good RP and some luck he can reduce the number of lashes Aoife takes?

Aoife FitzStephen |

Also Braeden is away is he not? On vacation?
But if someone would nicely mentioned that Aoife was told to go by Braeden, then this might be avoided. As Aoife cannot say no to anyone of the King's household.
Edit: Also ganna wait to see if Fintan does anything to alter it before I post.

Fintan of Largay |

Yeah, I think I'm going to take the risk. What's the worst that can happen? Besides Aoife's punishment being made worse or Fintan getting some sort of nasty backlash for this.
So, a lot.

Aoife FitzStephen |

Oh Aoife may get even worse.... Because to her, she's done nothing wrong. Maybe she left the house without the King's permission but she also could not say no to Braeden. She can't say no to either Fintan or Braeden. So... yeah.

Padraic Ó Cinnéide |

Man, having Cattle rocks. I'm like a legit person now. And I can increase my herd. I can become more wealthy and all I gotta do is keep Cows? Fudge yeah! What about sheep? Pigs? Can I have Chickens?

Fintan of Largay |

What can I say...? Kings love me! I cripple the children of their enemies.
Everyone loves people who do that.
Also, let's start a cow-raising club, Padraic. Only cool kids are invited.

Fintan of Largay |

Yeah, we'll raise cows, and call bullshit on anyone that tries to raise more cows than us! We're gonna take life by the horns, and anyone that tries to get our hard-earned cheese for free will just be a moooOOOOOOch.
