BACKSTORY:
Fintan is the second son of the King of Largay, and he is simultaneously the King's least favorite and the Queen's very favorite. Rumor has it that he may be an illegitimate child, the son of a Dane, but none dare - not even the King - to voice this thought in public, lest they anger Fintan's mother.
Fintan has always been a little slow, and his dullness of mind is the worst kept secret of his father's court. He knows how to fight - he was good at that, at least - and he enjoys riding horses and tending to his family's cattle herds. Fintan never learned his letters, but he somehow can still tell you the names of all the local Irish lords and has some rough understanding of politics. To put it bluntly, he's too damned simple.
Yet despite his faults Fintan is loved by the warriors and the freemen, perhaps for that very simplicity and for being so down-to-earth. It helps that he's a capable fighter in his own right; rumor has it he's even gone so far as to train a Welsh slave, Aoife, in the art of combat. This has long made Fintan a thorn in his father's side, and there has always been an understanding that his older brother would reign. Fintan accepted that, and had no ambition to rule.
Yet things did not go as planned. Fintan's older brother died before he could take the throne, leaving the dumb second son and his younger, more capable brother, Braedan. But Braedan's popularity is not so great as Fintan's, and so while their father would gladly choose Braedan to reign, he has settled for allowing Fintan the right of succession. Perhaps as a test, he has chosen to send Fintan to lead the invasion across the river, starting with the town of Belcoo, and let him prove himself afield. At least, that is Fintan's understanding of things...
APPEARANCE:
Fintan is a big man, standing at six feet tall with a small bush of pale blond hair on his head. He's tough and well-muscled, and some might call him handsome. Those who don't know better may assume he's a smart man, but they'd be quite wrong.
PERSONALITY:
Fintan is quiet, patient, and gentle for the most part. He enjoys hard work and horses, and while he's not very smart he does understand that war has consequences. If he could have his way, he would be left out of the politics and violence that Ireland is now embroiled in. Sadly, Fintan doesn't have much choice in the matter.
Gentle and peaceful though he may be, Fintan has a certain battle fury that strikes the fear of God into men, even being a relatively untested warrior as he is. Most who have seen him in these moments can agree on this: angering Fintan is something you do not want to do.
