You can only use healing surges and recharge encounter powers when you stop to rest for at least 5 minutes. You are in no position to do so right now.

Okay but wil still pull those mattresses and table so we can reach that study we found earlier and not leave the mattresses behind so we have something to seal up the door Seram kicked down when we first entered

"Better take those mattresses and whatever else we used to traverse the trapped corridor when we get past that bit since we can use them to block the door Seram kicked open, once we've done that we'll need to confirm where that other door leads before we rest up," Rowan says to the others as he takes up the rear in case the fishmen and the cultists catch up before they can get across the trapped sections.

Unless the encounter is officially over Rowan pulls the consecrated ground back to cover their retreat since that would give the fishmen reason enough to not want to follow well that is the general idea.

The encounter is over. Any further conflict with the fish-men et al will be a new encounter. Are you going through with this plan?

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

"Please maintain your holy aura Rowan. It may serve as a deterrant to the unspeakable evil that pursues us."

Sorry, end of encounter, it will end.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Ooops. Posted at the same time as Fabes.

"Let us block the door by any means available. Recuperation is essential."

I guess holing up in the study makes as much sense as anything else.

I believe thats a yes

Rushing back the way they came Rowan helps with moving the mattresses and other debris used to cover the trapped sections as they use them to safely traverse the area so they can reach the study with all the books from earlier.
Using the mattresses and debris to block up the door they turn now to check out the other exit from the room as some take the time to rest whilst others double check the room as the other door is checked.

Please add or alter to fit your actions I am assuming Manny would love another crack at that library whilst there was the matter of that clawed up furniture to consider...

Manny, helpfully 'supervising' IT in the recovery and placement of the bookshelves covering the trap to block the broken door, does indeed drift over to once again glance at the study's bookshelves. He mutters to himself, and makes not-very-subtle rude noises as he glances at the titles and authors of some of the texts.

"There has to be SOMEthing useful in here!" He grumbles as he scans,...

Seram sits irrated in the study. The idea of running sticks like a thorn in his paw.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

"I shall guard the area." Akahale's nostrils twitch with paranoid fanaticism.

He will also use a healing surge to bring himself back to full hp. He's got 7 left. How's everyone else looking, just in case we need to fend off an attack?

Sitting at 26 hp. One healing surge left, I'm wondering on using it or not. If we get attacked the +2 to defences could be a big help.

The group block up the doorway to the study with beds and bookcase remnants. They catch their breath and watch the stairwell for any activity.

Short rest. Encounter powers recharge. Use any healing surges. So, this barricade... floor to ceiling, enough to peer over. How's it working? The stairwell entrance; is someone guarding it?

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale is in paranoid pace mode. All senses alert.

The mage leans against the bookcase, breathing deeply. After a moment he stands back up, looking considerably better than he did a few moments ago. Using his magic, he cleans the dirt and blood from his robe as he continues to scan the bookshelves for anything of interest or useful.

"I cannot believe that I was just sent packing by a school of fish! And a wizzie wannabe with delusions of squidhood, It's embarrassing, really." He mutters aloud, unintentionally echoing Seram's thoughts.

Used 4 healing surges to regain full HP. He has 2 left. Got our Encounters back, but I'm fresh out of Item uses for the day. And I used my Action point up too on that abortive attempt to bring down the bad guy. :P

Mandake scans the shelves quickly, but nothing other than what they have already found leaps out at him as being useful.

Used 1 healing surge doesn't put Rowan back to full but enough for now more concerned with the fact all he can do to back up Seram now is Sacred Flame

Rowan once he's checked everyone will help with the guarding.

M Dragonborn Warlord / LVL 8

"Rowan, do you posses any powers that allow us to heal with out using a healing surge?" I am not sure but I thought that there is a cleric power that allows healing with out needing to use a healing surge. If that is that case I would suggest that we use the power once per 5 min. thus accounting for the encounter recharge.

Also my power of Inspired word can be used during the rest period once per 5 min. which will give an additional 2d6hp.

Grafire uses 1 inspired word healing surge. 17+ 1d6=6 =23hp + 1d6=6 = 29

That leaves 1 more inspired healing surge for some one to use this round before we rest another 5 min.

M Dragonborn Warlord / LVL 8

"Rowan add this inspired bonus to your heal surge. 2d6=9.

I, Grafire will guard the stair well entrance."

The primary way to heal without surges is via paladin or magic item.

Grafire:

Spoiler:
I don't want to tell you how to play, but just express a preference -- I find it jarring when characters use mechanics jargon ("healing surge") and would rather talk about it in terms like "aid his recovery when he's exhausted". Thanks.

It spends 4 surges for full healing and is ready to guard.

IT:

Spoiler:
Thank you, I am kind of short sited on the creative side when it comes to story telling and being "in character". I will do my best. I agree with you its a bit clunky to say the least and unimaginative.

So, guys, these barricades. Unless you say otherwise I'm assuming you only have time, what with the resting and all, to shove a couple of book cases behind the door to put some weight behind it.

>>>>MAP<<<<

Makes sense. I guess we're about as rested as we're gonna get!

Mandrake turns away from the bookshelf with a snort of disgust. He mutters something about "worthless, self-promotional tripe" and stomps over to the others.

"IT? Let me have a look at you,... Oh, it's not nearly as bad as I thought, You do have a lot of carbon scoring here, nothing I can't get out with the right tools,... Now that's quality workmanship, they don't make'em like that anymore!" He says with a self-satisfied smirk. He looks up from his examination of IT's plating to the rest.

"So? What's the plan? Do we charge them, or make them come to us?" He looks from Rowan, to Akahale, to Grafire. Then his fuzzy white eyebrows furrow.

"Um,... We DO have a plan,... Right?"

As Mandrake ponders, the group here banging at the door from the secret corridor, the bookcases hold...

Seram Zal's turn. No-one is surprised. You have had 1 short rest, and Grafire has used 1 inspiring word. He thus has 1 left.

"I did, I used it on Seram in that battle in the room with the pool and can't call upon it again today, otherwise I'm fine thanks for asking," Rowan answers Grafire.

"Okaayyy,... New plan!" The bearded mystic calls as the banging begins.

"Let them in." He says simply. Looking at the others he makes a face.

"I'm not crazy! Well, maybe a little silly now and then,... Just let them in one at a time, and make with the stabbity-thing that you guys do,..." He says, loosely waving his hand in the general direction of Grafire and Seram. Oooo! Or better yet, if we open the door a little, IT can use his launcher-thingy,... that I didn't know he had, and blast them all with that! Do you have any acid in there?" He asks the stoic IT, trying to peer behind the living automaton's closed chest plate.

"Acid is always good for discouraging busybodies. Ice is always good for a laugh too. If not I guess fire is acceptable, if somewhat unimaginative." He sniffs.

Waiting for my turn, at least in here they can't gang up on us! Especially if we do the door/bottleneck trick.

"What area effect spells do you have handy?" Rowan asks Manny.

"Just a thought but if we wait for just before his turn and then pull back so they bust in, in time for Manny and It to cut loose their abilities centred beyond that door and then we melee them so they can do it again next round, say Seram you are carrying a bow right?" Rowan explains and then asks Seram whose currently keeping the book case from being shouldered over by the fishmen trying to bust in.

N Warforged Fighter

"It has charges remaining of acid," IT confirms.

"I have a bow, but I'm not very good with it. Use it more for hunt than battle"

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

"I am not well equipped for melee," comments Akahale, his eyes starting their familiar spinning. "However, I am very much in the mood to curse and blast."

He eases his way to the furthest point he can find away from the door.

He needs to be at least two squares away to do his stuff.

Argh! Posted earlier, and site went offline! Catching up,...

Manny blinks back to the present at Rowan's voice.
"Hm? Oh! I can blast them with thunder, or rainbows, It doesn't hurt them, but it sure is pretty! Or an exploding force-ball if they're nice enough to stand next to each other."

Thunder wave at will, Color spray encounter, Force Orb, encounter, all secondary targets must be standing next to the original target. All other powers are individual targets. Maybe I should start off with Color Spray. It may stun them long enough to get in hits. But I'll have to be close.

Yes that caught me too

"Okay I'll engage but since we know what lies beyond that door Manny should be able to place his area effects where they won't effect us and if he's standing behind me is that close enough to react so I can step to his side and he then employs that spray before shifting behind me once more?" Rowan asks.
"Seram I guess we'll keep that bow handy in case you have to avoid using up your reserves, Akahale keep an eye on the other door in case this lot is a diversion, Grafire get ready we might have to hold them off long enough for the others to shift clear," Rowan suggests hoping the others might be able to improve on his original idea.

Seram takes his blade in his hand, and takes postion beside the door.

First on through gets hit

OK, readying melee attack. I'll see what I reckon the DC is for them to bust through.

Out of curiosity what would be the DC if say Manny used Thunderwave on our side of the door so it hit them gathered outside?

Rowan blinks.
"What if we let Manny and It use their first attack to blast that door into our impetuous visitors? After all if they're so eager to come in why don't we let them have it...literally?" Rowan asks.
"We will need to be out of the blast radius but with them weakening it on their side and we blast it at them before we.. say charge them?" Rowan wondering if that was actually possible.

Well, ok, it's like this. The door opens inwards; at the moment your enemies are trying to open it but they can't easily because it's blocked by two bookcases. So many can't pelt them with bookcases because the door is closed. I'll say DC 22, which my fish-man warrior fails miserably.

More banging takes place on the door to the study as Seram Zal makes ready to slice any interlopers.

Akahale's turn.

M Dragonborn Warlord / LVL 8

Given the situation of being in a small confined room, a stone cold looks sweeps over Grafire's face. He sweeps a strong sturdy look over his friends,

"Arms at the ready! Let us give thanks to Bahamut and ask him to give us the strength and to let us indulge upon this next foe. That we might fight a battle worthy of his name."

That's the spirit! :D

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

"I shall wreck doom upon them ere I fall."

N Warforged Fighter

It stands back, It's torso compartment open and ready to launch a ball of alchemist's acid.

Ready attack on visible enemy

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale's lips move as he prepares to blast dark doom from among the bookcases.

Readied action for first visible enemy.

As Seram waits for the first one through the door he beings to hum an eerie song

Sorry I had too

You hear a thudding down the stairs, and the door opens! One of the horrid fish-men stabs at It, inflicting injury on the metal man.

28 vs AC. 15 normal damage and 2 poison damage to It

>>>>MAP<<<<

Love the song, Seram.

Just so long as you don't start tap-dancing.

Grafire and Mandrake are up. I will rule that FM4 can be seen but has cover from FM3.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

So when does Akahale's readied action happen? I'm slow today. Forgive stupidity please.

Sorry, missed that. What is your readied action?

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

This...

Arcane syllables and a circlet of dark power wraps around FM3 as Akahale curses it. Satisfied, he grunts slightly and unleashes a gout of eldritch doom on the creature.

Curse, blast (Ref) v FM3 (1d20 11=21, 1d10 7=17, 1d8=8). Which I really hope hits as it does max damage. Bet it doesn't. Just in case, the 17 is psychic, the 8 is normal.

Akahale's gout of dark energy is dodged by the icthyian horror.

Sorry, guv.
