The hunters already heard about elephants with fur, but they never saw one. They seem to be impressed.
Celentrai, Tippy and Borrobol find out, that most of the hunters at the lodge corroborate the baron's story and confirm that other hunters also gone missing in this part of the jungle. The hunters also tell about the monkey swamp. The monkeys who reside there possess mystical powers. There are also rumors that several independent groups of explorers are currently planning their own expeditions to find the lost temple.
Celentrai Atalla |
'It seems we are not the only ones looking for the temple. We will have to be careful as we proceed."
I have nothing to buy so I am ready to go
Celentrai Atalla |
Celentrai suddenly has a look of surprise.
"Why didn't I think of this before. I need to pick up a wand of endure elements" She then rushes to the store to pick one up.
GM Baerlie |
Ragdya is a neutral god who looks after animals. He loves monkeys and if you treat his beloved ones good they might return to help once you need it. The monkeys usually come in swarms.
Once you are ready to go
The Segang Jungle is a dense tropical forest. The deciduous trees that comprise it are green all year round thanks to the wet coastal climate.
Count Matsanda and Baron Rudyahm ride in a howdah on the elephant’s back, accompanied by their mahout. The howdah is an elaborate wooden affair that can hold three occupants and one driver. Game is scarce on the first day of the safari. The baron explains that animals are skittish this close to the hunting lodge, and the real trophies are to be found deeper in the jungle.
At the end of the first day the hunting party sets up camp in a clearing atop a low rise. The night passes uneventfully.
Early in the morning, the PCs hear a loud crash coming from the count’s tent.
Iso Soturi |
Iso offers his suggestions on way to improve the hunt.
survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Upon hearing the crash, Iso grabs his axe and rushes for the tent.
"What is Matter Count?"
GM Baerlie |
Baron Ruyahm reaches the tent just ahead of you. "What the devil happened in here?" he asks as he enters. You hear the count replie in a fearful voice, "Something in my boot bit me — a spider I think. I fell back onto the bed in surprise. My god, Bomande, what if it’s poisonous? I could lose the foot! You brought some antitoxin, didn’t you? Fetch it quickly!"
Unfazed, the baron replies, "Ah, bit of luck then. The spiders of Segang aren’t dangerous, not like the scorpions. It’ll probably smart for a bit, that’s all. Next time, check your damn boots!"
Iso Soturi |
"Iso remember to check his boots in morning too!" says a relieved looking barbarian.
On his way back to his tent, Iso will stare into the darkness around the camp for a few minutes.
"Iso wonders what else is out there."
Celentrai Atalla |
"Thank goodness you are all right!" then Celentrai quietly returns to her tent and carefully exaimines all of her equipment for unseen passengers.
Borrobol |
"Yeah, the little ones usually aren't too much trouble, unless there are a whole bunch of them all together. The big ones though...you know one of Rovagug's beast-bugs still looms over a whole city in Osirion." Borrobol will have a quick look at the Count's foot before returning to his tent.
Heal: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Iso Soturi |
"Iso remembers his Confirmation. Lots of Spiders in the forest. Iso set cloak on fire and covered spiders with that. Alas cloak of Iso did not survive."
Iso Soturi |
Iso shrugs.
"It is cold in northlands. Iso has experience in setting things on fire."
He has the good grace to blush a little at that.
Iso Soturi |
Iso points to the darkness around. "Spider little. Very dark too. Iso not sure he want to look at foot of Count that has been in boot too long."
He pauses for a moment, scratches and then asks.
"Iso wondering why count putting on boots at this hour? Maybe we travel before day gets too hot?"
GM Baerlie |
The interior of this spacious canvas tent is richly decorated with portable darkwood and silver furnishings. Torn mosquito netting hangs above the bed, and a mirror, basin, and various shaving implements lie scattered on the ground. A black leather boot lies on the floor next to the crumpled remains of a large black spider.
Borrobol checks the bite mark and finds out that the count is not suffering from any serious symptoms of poisoning.
Borrobol |
Borrobol grunts, "The Baron is right. No serious poison here and trust me, we've seen serious. Fortunately I'm largely immune, but it's probably for the best that you let us know. Can really screw up you softer folk. Next time try not to panic and make so much noise. If we're hunting the tiger you're likely to frighten him off...or make yourself a target."
GM Baerlie |
The count looks embarrassed but calms down. He finally finishes dressing himself and puts on the shoe. "Thank you. I will be more careful next time." he says.
For breakfast you have jerky, fruits and some dry bread. "Please excuse this kind of food, but everything else would get bad in this heat." the baron says.
Once you all are prepared for the first day of hunting Count Matsanda pulls you aside to ask for help. "I’d really like to impress the old man today, but you see, I’m not much of a hunter." he admits. "In fact, I’ve never really been hunting before! Is there any help or advice you can give me?"
There are several ways to help Matsanda in the hunt, be creative ;) And you can do a 'just for fun' hunt whenever you like, if you want some fresh meat for dinner.
Borrobol |
Borrobol eats the jerky, fruits and bread without complaint. After all, he's been on plenty of Pathfinder journeys with poorer fare than this. But when the Count asks for help, he pauses for a moment and considers all of the surrounding wildlife. "Sure, I've never hunted in a real jungle but it can't be that different than hunting thugs or undead." Hoping that Iso might know his way around the wild a little better Borrobol begins looking for some trace of jungle life that might be suitable for hunting.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Not a lot of skill points here. I figure we can help make the Count successful once we find something.
Iso Soturi |
"Iso will be happy to Hunt with Count." smiles Iso.
When both the baron and count are around Iso offers:
"Iso suggests today Count and Baron each lead hunting party in morning. Two better than one. Then meet back at camp and travel to new spot in afternoon?"
Iso looks at the two men. "Iso worried about Count limping, so Iso hunt with Count today and carry him if foot gets bad."
survival for hunt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Not sure how that would work, but if we were moving, that would provide food for three people. We're not moving, but only going for a morning. So maybe a brace of parrots? Maybe others in Iso's party have more luck, or as a group we bring down something bigger?
Iso hands the parrots to the Count to show to the Baron as his kills.
Iso Soturi |
Lots of aid-anothers in combat to give him nice bonuses to hit would help him and mean we didn't need to lie. Not too far off what "beaters" do anyway in real hunts I guess.
GM Baerlie |
While you walk around in the heat suddenly you hear hooves close to you. A second later a big bison jumps out of the bushes, stops on the path in front of you and stares at you. "Let me kill this one!" the Count sais. The bison turns around and rushes into the jungle, the count follows.

"Iso wonders why there is Bison in jungle. Too hot for wooly coat here."
Tippy Fullbottle PFS |
"Well, this has to be a new low point for the Pathfinder Society," Tippy remarks snidely, but seeing that he's now suddenly alone in the jungle, he takes off after the others, though with no intention of actually hunting a bison.
GM Baerlie |
Don't ask me why there is a wooly bison in the junlge
Iso follows the animal into the jungle and tracks it down in a dead end surrounded by dense trees, bushes and rocks. Borrobol trips the bison and while it's on the floor the count shoots it.
After a minute Baron Rudyahm follows with the other hunters. "Good job, Falroun. A bison! I expected you to catch some birds, but not a bison." The count takes out the parrots from his bag Iso handed him before. "Well, I started with birds, but I'm a fast learner, Baron." he answers with a smile and a wink to you.
If you want to hunt more animals, just roll more d8
Iso Soturi |
Iso is happy to continue hunting if the Baron and Count are also up for more.
"But Iso says move soon to new spot. Leave animals to come back."
GM Baerlie |
You get deeper into the jungle and suddenly a leopard jumps out of the bushes, hunting a small animal. When he crosses your path he stops and stares at you with big black eyes. AC15, Touch 14

"Well done." says Iso.
He looks around. "We should re-join the others and move on to a new area. "
Pausing for a moment he looks at the count "Or would you like to do more hunting here first?"
GM Baerlie |
"Hm, I think a bison and a leopard are enough for the first day. Everything else would be too much to carry around in the jungle." the count says. "At least I cought some dinner for today."
After joining the rest of the hunting party the baron pats the count's shoulder. "Well, I think I made a mistake. I thought you are not man enough to hunt and kill an animal. But you changed my mind, for today at least." Matsanda is smiling happily like a child who got sweets for doing something right.
You continue into the jungle, looking for the tiger. The second day Count Matsanda is able to kill a magificent sloth bear with your help. The baron is impressed again.
On the morning of the hunt’s third day, the smell of wood smoke fills the camp as porters busy themselves tending various cooking fires. Outside the camp, the jungle is alive with the sounds of monkeys, birds, and chirping insects. The porters offer to skin, butcher, and cook any of the animals you killed.
you can do some roleplaying if you like
Celentrai Atalla |
Celentrai quiety talks to Tippy
"This may be a waste of time but without their help we will never find the temple!. Please pretend to enjoy the hunt. This is just a short time with a important reward"
She then walks over the the count.
"That was an amazing kill. You are a very skilled hunter. Do you have any hints for me?"
