Alexi VonShen |
I feel honored to have been selected. Thank you GM. Will update my race bar with quick access info soon.
Edit: Alexi owns a shadow dojo (being it's kept secret), and prefers to stay out of the spotlight. He is consumed by a need for power, and to prove himself to the syndicate.
Froth |
Checking in. Putting the kids to bed, so chit chat will have to wait. Eight players, huh? Ambitious.
DM Malleus |
Hello everyone, just some quick things about my play style and what I hope to get out of this game.
I believe that story is king, that being said, I will bend rules in favor of flavor, so if something is stupid or you feel like you have a class ability that is doing you little to no good, let's discuss it! I am a very open person and will only make strong NO statements if I have to or I feel a player is abusing the spirit of the game (not a problem I suspect from this group at all)
I generally don't use maps on my tabletop games, but feel that they really help in PbP especially with this many players, so some of you had expressed interest in helping me with that, and I appreciate that. I tried to figure out dungeon grid, but it seems super unintuitive to me, but maybe I'm just challenged that way.
I selected you all based on your valourous attempts at back story, and I felt that each of you presented me with options to tie in your past and expand on this new setting that we will be developing together. Once everyone has checked in, I will start the gameplay off and with a nice intro scene, probably tomorrow unless insomnia rears its ugly head for the fifth night in a row, in which case maybe tonight!
I want to remind all that the Vig loot system from the Welcome initiate doc has been removed from the game in favor of a more standard easier to manage salary and loot system. Namely I think Lady Zanra had it in her Character Sheet.
I also believe that the unbalanced nature of gestalt is not a weakness but a strength! Remember that while you all represent not just initiates but a batch of recruits far stronger than average. That being said, size up your opponents, you may well be able to take on 20 street thugs. But keep in mind that others especially higher ranking guild members will likely vastly outpower you. So heads up.
Froth |
Cool. Thanks for the heads up GM. Froth needs some polish in the crunch department, and I had a few questions about character building I felt could be left until after selection to see if they were worth the trouble of sorting out. Hopefully you won't mind if some aspects of our character design is a little fluid at the start, especially if you are wanting to start right away, as it seems. The other alternative would be giving it a couple of days to get the party locked down mechanically before beginning, but I am fine either way.
As for our team, it looks like we will have a larger party, which has both upsides and downsides to it. One upside is that it is usually not to hard to cover all the roles, and gestalt makes that doubly so. Even though, as I said before, I am open to making adjustments in order to better fit a party, so long as they still fit well within my overall concept.
Alexander Torov |
Woohoo. Pretty sure my character sheet is complete and have gone over it for mistakes. All I have to do is add items assuming those I posted before are fine.
Also just realised you are playing Rosemary in my way of the wicked campaign which is cool.
Mordren, Maven of Strings |
As Froth mentioned above, I'm prepared to make any changes that might be necessary or even just to shift things so that everyone may fit well into their respective roles. I myself would like to make a few slight adjustments, and will be working toward getting my information onto my profile here on the forum from Mythweavers.
As for the roles I am able to fill, it will often depend on the situation. My main skills will be in stealthy assassination and seductive manipulation, however I will be capable of front line combat as well. Might even enjoy it.
As a side note, if you need someone to absolutely terrify something, Mordren's your gal.
I'd also like to confirm everyone's comfort level, as we are taking part in an evil adventure some things can be rather vivid. I'd like to avoid offending anyone. I can say with confidence, that you would indeed have to try very hard to offend me with anything your character might do in our travels together.
Froth |
I took a quick stroll through the completed characters, as I could see them, in order to see what we have to work with in our party. Here's what I found so far. Please correct me on any misconceptions.
Alexander Torov Human Sorcerer (Arcane)/Oracle (Heavens)
Specializes in Illusion magic / A lover, not a fighter.
Alexi Von Shen Oni-Spawn Monk//Kensai Magus
Melee fighter. 6 level arcane caster.
Froth Orc born Tiefling Spell Eater Primalist Bloodrager//Adept Godling
A nightmare. Strength based melee fighter, magic capable.
Lady Zanra Zamean Elf Half Fiend/Aristocrat//Telepath Psion
Morden Shadow Fey Antipaladin/Rogue
Don't see any mention of Archetypes, so I am assuming none. Rogue and Antipaladin type abilities.
Rileng Sulfach Babilis Slayer//Mastermind
Intelligence based; the brains of the operation. Dex based fighter.
Pain Human Inquisitor/Slayer
Melee Fighter. Murder domain. Hates dragons.
Virgil Hass Human Vivisectionist, Chirurgeon//Machinesmith
Sneak attacking healer with a robot bodyguard.

yeah antipaladins are the scariest things around (other than dreads) as they can scare things that don't know fear.
Paladins? Shaking in their bootsConstructs rust themselves
Undead knees knock together
Vermin run for ther holes
Oozes scared out of the minds they don't even have

I find it best to spoiler graphic detail,
Though as to offending her, I'm guessing it would still be bad form to drug her and cut her open to see what she looked like on the inside?Froth |
Melee front line: Froth, Alexi, Mordren, Pain.
Healers: Pain and Virgil
Inflicters: Mordren and Alexander (Mordren is already dependent on negative energy to heal, and this need may increase if more folk explore vampirism.)
Range: Riling On my quick look through I didn't see any dedicated range builds that I could spot right off. One in the group might be handy...
Arcane: Alexander, Froth, Alexi, Zanra (sort of)
Divine: Alexander, Pain, Froth (Kind of)
Traps: Mordren
Knoweldge: I didn't look closely enough at anyone's skills to see if we have a Lore jockey. Anyone?
Alexander Torov |
Yeap illusions(battlefield control) and disguise skill out the wazoo for me. Probably saving color spray for combat when things try getting in my face. I will have all the inflicts to save my butt if needed when i'm Vetala.
Knowledge skills I will have a few points in the main 4 but no +30's or anything.
Lady Zanra Zamean |
Please correct me on any misconceptions.
Rileng Sulfach Babilis Slayer//Mastermind
Intelligence based; the brains of the operation. Dex based fighter.
Yep one
Lady Zanra Zamean Elf Half Fiend/Aristocrat//Telepath PsionShe has an Int of 22 and 26 for short times, Wis/Cha of 15, As a noble sees herself as the brains of any operation, its what she specialises in. With all Kno at 10+ and the ability to assess others. But she's not stupid, She knows on the ground you need street smarts. She would not get in the way of Rileng Sulfach if he seeks command/leader role. :)
Personalty and play style.
Three words. Brilliant, Charming, Impeccable.
I am going to play her as a well spoken and well mannered business woman type who just happens to work for an Evil corporation. Is is always polite and respectful until she has course to be. Then she may show her well hidden darker side, but then its always with impeccable manners.
"Look, I fully understand it must be painful to have you brain melted in your skull, but please.. there is no need to make this personal, its just business.".
Think Evil English Noble woman :).
Also she tends to ware no Armor and carry no weapons, when she has to she feels like she has let her standers drop.
Alexi VonShen |
Hmmm.....I have knowledge history and knowledge arcana, so I could be a sort of lore jockey. Also, I would like to mention that given Alexi's nature, some of my posts may contain "mature" content. He views most woman as filth. Whores of the earth. Not worthy of life. So Zanra, I apologize for the guaranteed friction of the future. Just know that it is all in good role play spirit. Alexi will not affiliate himself with you as a party "face", but he will cooperate while it helps him gain status and power.
Lady Zanra Zamean |
Knoweldge: I didn't look closely enough at anyone's skills to see if we have a Lore jockey. Anyone?
As stated all Knoweldge skills 10+ She is a winged Skill Monkey. :)

He is Evil and she is Evil, we are all evil, this game is all going to be about getting what each PC things will best put them at an advantage. When I said "face" I did not mean leader, I mean "Respectable face". Your PC walks in a room of good Clergy men and most will wet themselves, where as Zanra and a few others can hoodwink them with a smile and spell. But Be invited to there party's etc, for that you need a Noble.
As to how she will see your PC, I will not know that until we are in game play. :)As for PCs not getting along, I'm fine with that, as long as it all stays with in the PCs, I always find it best to talk 3ed person when my PC is being mean and rude to each other and not say "You where being rude to me" more "Your PC was being rude to mine" etc. :) Should be fun.
Just worked out shes an Evil Diplomat :)
Also remember that the Shadow Syndicate may place us in a Team of Cell with rolls they want us to undertake. It may not be down to us. If they don't then as we are all the same level within the Syndicate we may not have a leader as such and may have to jocky for roles. I am happy with that if its a 1st time meet for all of us. Meta Game info aside our 1st meeting may setup what we think of each other. That is if the Syndicate dos not inform us of any other than names ranks and Syndicate membership number :)
Alexander Torov |
I believe Alexander will treat most with passive indifference but work together as a 'squad' or whatever we are. His beef right now is with the mages and wants to hurt them somehow. He is evil but not because he likes torturing/murdering but because to him, 'the ends justify the means' and the Syndicate will help him with that. Becoming a Vetala will change some of his goals what with them being soul draining bastards and such.
He doesn't particularly like killing and prefers to let others get their hands dirty and his spells will reflect that.
Froth |
Froth also cares little about the affairs of his 'teammates'. To him, the Dark One's are merely a means to an ends, and he regards them as disposibly and interchangibly as they likely view him. He cares nothing for the affairs of mortals, nor anything as mundane as wealth or political power; he regards himself as a god, and nothing less than the secret to unlocking true divinity will interest him. In the meantime, the ants that walk around him are of little concern. He loves violence, and inflicting carnage, but doesn't do so haphazardly; he is in it for the long haul, and such actions have a tendency to bring down unwanted attention before one is ready. As far as comrades are concerned, he may acknowledge or bare grudging respect to those with Outsider blood, or other immortal lineages, but all others will have an uphill battle.
Mordren, Maven of Strings |
Morden Shadow Fey Antipaladin/Rogue
Don't see any mention of Archetypes, so I am assuming none. Rogue and Antipaladin type abilities.
I will remedy this asap. But fyi I've taken the Burglar and Poisoner archetypes for Rogue. Otherwise, I am a plain jane antipaladin.
Currently if you click the link to her character sheet, and scroll down to the bottom, that's where all my extra notes are. Special racial things, archetypes and the like.
Mordren, Maven of Strings |

Daw, Mordren is going to love him to bits. xD
Her views on others can be summarized by how much entertainment they can provide for her. Whether that entertainment is of a mature nature, graphic, or even simply making her smile matters little. Everyone else is a tool, a means for which she can meet her ends.
Mordren, Maven of Strings |
So much group cohesion already
We'll be a force to be reckoned with. ^_-
Suffice to say, that doesn't mean she will not work well with others. She may enjoy it, profusely.
Rileng Sulfach |
Figures when I have a night exam all these post go flying. ;)
Anyways Rileng is a bit of a switch hitter and skill monkey. I made him to be fluid as he had to be in his life. Depending on how things go he may focus on melee or ranged or remain a switch hitter. Thanks to his class feature he can use any knowledge skill and has a good few already, throw in his inspiration and they can have a extra +1 to +6 added. He gives off the appearance of a business man and he is. Just one without morals for the most part. He appears physically weak and unarmed on purpose, hiding both weapons and armor below clothes and illusion as it gives him an advantage both physically and mentally with others playing off their ego or perception. He considers combat a last resort but not out of fear or lack of expertise, rather as a failure to obtain the desired result without risk. His assassin persona is a result of manipulation of trade, he accepts contracts on those already targeted. As the assassin he will know when they die and plays the market to profit off their time of death. Gaining profit from the shift in trade as well as a completed contract. It is a role of opportunity rather then profession for him.
Concerning his goals, simple power and immortality among a few other things. As a fiend blooded his life is already long but he has no desire to go to an after life. He dislikes the idea of undeath for the loss it demands so has turned to alchemy. Thinking that instead of eternal youth, that has already been achieved by others, he could use it to empower his blood. First by becoming a half fiend then by becoming a full unique fiend.
Rileng is best considered a spider at the center of a web or a snake. He cares nothing for notice or renown, he is all about results with the lest amount of investment. He takes the long view and has no problem giving up short term gains in favor of long term ones.
Hope that gives you guys a handle on him a bit. Will check in after work, the weekend is so close I can taste it. xP
Mordren, Maven of Strings |
Gosh you are a lot are a blood thirsty and ruthless types, I think Her Ladyship may be a little shocked at you manners and options.
I'm looking forward to seeing how our characters react to each other.
Another side note, vanity demanded I search for a new avatar. I have found one that satisfies.
Lady Zanra Zamean |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
@Rileng Sulfach.
I think her Ladyship and Rileng are going to get along splendidly, he's seems just the type of ruthless killer and Thinking Criminal she likes.
@Mordren, Maven of Strings
Yes it will be most interesting to see how they get on, I think Zanra may be more logical in her emotions. She tends not to play with users. But I have a small hidden part of her back story that may come out that may endear her to Mordren.
@Alexi VonShen
If Alexi comes on to strong the psychopathic misogamist she may take a dislike to him, but will work with him as he's in the "Shadow" and has been ordered to presumable.
Alexi VonShen |
He is unlikely to come on very strong. He'll most likely keep his thoughts to himself. He will be silently judgmental, there may be descriptions of body language that would act as a tell. But I foresee quality interaction between the group, definitely.
Alexander Torov |
I don't think that you Alexander will try to be a leader or in charge at all. He is above average intelligence but he is still young and not a forceful type. He is however very handsome and charming and is used to most people liking him (except some snotty mage types that think they know everything).
The yellow boxes |
Virgil has knowledge nature and engineering maxed, arcana nearly maxed and I got one rank in nobility and local
I also have an ability that heals about as much as lay on hands does bu it doesn't use strictly positive energy
And he and his robot bodyguard are both decent at melee
The robot has 50hp and has three attacks in a full attack, one of which has poison, of course he's rather inaccurate on a full attack too, espically on that poison bite
Virgil has +6 to hit 1d8+2d6+3 damage
Froth |
I'm realizing I misread part of the instructions back at the beginning. Regarding templates it said to please avoid adding acquired templates at character creation, and for some reason I read that as please avoid acquiring templates (at all) at character creation.
I had been thinking of having one, such as Half-Fiend, as it fits rather well, though a version that was modified slightly to reflect Qlippoth features would probably be best. Would that be acceptable GM?
Lady Zanra Zamean |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
@Froth I went with Half Fiend Template, but I limmited myself. I did this so as to stop my PC from being to powerful compared with other PCs.
I took an MPC class on that side to keep it even. As A GM myself I know balance will always be a problem with having a 1 to 3ed level PC with Half Fiend/Celestial Template. Lets face it a Half Fiend or Celestial with godling + bloodrager is going to be right up there.
If you max out your HP, TH and Saves with STR [Godling one stat for all thing] your going to be +9 all saves, add to that what my PC has, DR5/magic Energy resistance 10 Immunity to poison SR14 and to-hit at going on +9 up and your going to be near one PC party in your own right.
I could have done the same but cut my PC back to make an even playing field for other players and their PCs. Picked main class that was brains over brawn, on her Half Fiend side I took the weakest NPC class. She still has has high stats, high int and dex, but she's has low HP and To Hit, She wares no Armor and uses weapons only when she really has to.
I think you may want to consider the same, drop ether godling + bloodrager for a simple NPC class, so your not over powered Vs the rest of the players. :)
Mind you IF you do get the green light and its ok to Muckin Im going to switch out my class for Clever goding and get my saves up to 9 across the board. Take Leadership + Knowledge as Domains, and look to become a Demi-god as well. Mind you IF we both did that, then every one will feel the need to match the power levels and soon this will be a party of 8 godlings come Vampires, ware-things and Demons/devils etc. All very messy for a GM, so you see my thinking in NOT maxing out the Half Fiend Template, level playing field so others could make all kinds of fun PCs with out worrying about the half god half devil in the room.
:0)
Froth |
All very good points, and good things to take under consideration. I'll look at some various options for limiting things.
I hate it when there is a voice of reason when I am on a roll...
The yellow boxes |
I wouldn't be a godling, it wouldn't fit the character
if you guys maxed out yourself I'd pull a few extra tricks to max out my construct bodyguard.
Maybe build an army.
Even as is using my standard tactics one hit from me does an average of 14.5 damage +2 bleed damage, this is when I'm not being buffed by mutagen or spells and doesn't take into account the damage or poison of my bodyguard
And remember for those using Half fiend, it increases in cost at later levels, at level 5 it costs 2, at level (I think) 11 it costs 3
Froth |
Hmm, so far, no dice. I would actually like to find a template that gives a cool array of fitting abilities, and not just a bunch of stat increases, which is mostly what the ones like Half-Fiend provide, but I don't see any that offer quite what I'm looking for. On the other side, to find a balancing class that would allow for something like those bonuses, I am uncertain in what direction to look, or which side of my build to consider sacrificing.
I suppose for this and for any other rounding out, I am still looking to see what the group might perceive as any overlooked areas or weaknesses. What do you think, besides a conscience, what is our group missing?
The yellow boxes |
Uuh a buffer?
I got traps,
we have an abundance of damage dealers, mostly melee
One debuffer ala illusionist
Two healers
A couple of party faces
Not sure of any specific standard niche the psion will be filling
All in all we're doing pretty good
QUESTION FOR THE GM
What is/are the availability of firearms?
Froth |
The current spell-list I chose was arcane, but I effectively cast as either a Sorcerer or Oracle, but I can choose any spell list. What spell list do you think is the best for buffing? I could take a look at it and see if it would still suit the other purposes I might have in mind.
Froth |
Well, Froth's intended purpose is pretty much meant to be front and center in any conflict, so much of the buffing he might otherwise do might only be on himself.
I might take a closer look at the Bard spell list, as even though I tend to despise bards in terms of classes I'd want to play, their spell list might end up being useful to me regardless. I guess Inquisitor is another in that ilk that could work. Bard has the advantage of being mostly arcane stuff but still including the Cure spells.
Froth |
"I will defeat this foe through interpretive dance..."
Ya, it's not for me.
Looking through the lists, I don't think bard will work after all; it doesn't actually appear to have as many buffs as I would have guessed. I think either sticking with the Sorcerer/Wizard list, or using the Oracle list will be about the only way to go...
DM Malleus |
If you wanna be selfish, I think the best self buffer is warpriest.
Firearms are not common, but available. They tend to be looked down upon by the syndicate for their loudness and lack of subtlety but I'm not saying there isn't an awesome sniper that is a member of the Syndicate.
I really want to call it the SS but realize that that is a horribly offensive thing lol.
Froth |
Not that I want to be selfish, Froth recognizes the advantages of having capable hands around, its just that when he's up front or covering a retreat, he may not have much time (or be close enough) to be buffing his allies. I suppose that's why buffers are usually support characters...
Alexi VonShen |
Ok, so I went ahead and bought a ring of protection +1, just for the extra edge. I'm looking at some other stuff, but am currently indecisive.
The yellow boxes |
Check out the ring of seven lovely colors, much more bang for your buck, though a tad expensive for this level, but then your ring is still most of your money, check out the Ki boosting equipment.
As for firearms I was looking into having a ranged backup weapon for my character, crossbows suck, and I'm not sure a bow fits thematically, I'm imagining something one handed.
Rileng Sulfach |
DM said we could pick up templates and finding a alchemical transformation into a unique half fiend then full fiend sounds like a nice quest to me. Personally when given options like that I will start pretty basic (I use that loosely here) and work my way into what I want to be. It's no fun being a evil kid that turns into a evil adult, I want to be a evil kid that grows up into a freakin nightmare. That BBEG status is earned folks make no mistake. xD
@TYB
Hey I have a repeating crossbow, if I had the money I would have a heavy version. What about them sucks?
