Male Human Witch (Gravewalker) 3

I was just earlier asking if we had a means to light the bridge on fire.

The witch rushes back to his previous position near the bridge, speaking an aside to Leto.

If you have fire, use it. We have no options.

Marwan then waves his fingers in a familiar pattern and puts the leader of the single-file line of enemies asleep.

"Oh no you don't!" Calex thinks as he spots the group trying to navigate past the slippery section on the bridge. "You mongrels are not getting past that!"

Calex begins to quickly cast another spell, reaching into his spell pouch and pulling out a small folded square of grease-stained paper. As he mutters the arcane words for his magic, he flips the paper square open to fling a small pat of butter towards the bridge. The delicious aroma of melted butter lingers for a moment as the item is consumed by the magic, creating an over-lapping slick of grease on the bridge, blocking the route past the earlier one already cast.

Calex casts his Grease spell at square (E,14) on the bridge deck.

Round 8…

When Marwan sees the owlbear go down, he rushes to get closer to the bridge. Seeing the advancing Tafganor in a single line on the north edge of the bridge he summons a hex around the first in line

Will Save, DC 15: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

The lead orc collapses onto the ground just as Calex summons another patch of magical grease directly in the path of the attackers. The next in line tries to step over his fallen comrade and steps directly into the grease.

Reflex Save, DC 16?: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Just at that moment, the rest of the advancing orcs bunch together as they come to a stop right behind those how fell and that is when Leto rushes to stand next to Marwan.

The two exchange a knowing look and leto hurls a bomb into the bunched up attackers.

The bomb strikes the next Tafganor in the line and explodes engulfing him in flames and spreading fire to those around him. Screaming in pain and surprise the orc topples over the rail into the lake. There is a panic in the ranks as those behind are singed. One of the orcs burned by the b9omb leaps forward and also falls in the grease patch.

The rail and sidewall of the bridge on the north side catches on fire.

The fire is small at first, but the flames grow as the dried wood of the roof is ignited.

Scrambling back the way they came, the attackers flee the bridge as it begins to be engulfed in fire.

Arvid strides forward as the flames grow, and aims carefully at the head of the wounded owlbear and with one clean shot slays the beast where it lies

The attackers are fleeing back into Lakeside. It is impossible to tell how many escaped

The bridge is just over 60 feet in length, grease spells on the floor of the bridge 25 feet from the east end will keep you from getting very far. The bridge is on fire just behind the grease spell target areas, and spreading fast. The only way to target the ground past the grease and the fire is to throw through the covered bridge to reach the other side (a very difficult prospect) or throw across the lake a full 80 feet to the target. Initiative tracking has ended. The Tafganor and Sashi-Anhain retreat into the darkness of the Lakeside area of the village. With the bridge on fire it is going to be difficult to get off the island, there are no boats on Riverside

The heroes of Woodbridge watch as the orcs and snake-men retreat into the darkness of Lakeside.

As the bridge continues to burn, Leto imagines if adding vegetation to the bridge would slow the fire, but he can clearly see that the wood is ancient, and the roof particularly dry and once it catches fire the whole roof seems to go up in flames quickly.

The night sky is suddenly filled with the glow of the fire from the bridge, but soon it is not the only fire they can see.

Across the lake, one by one, you can see the cottages of lakeside set a blaze.

Leto studies the bridge, wracking his brain for a solution

Leto:
If a good number of people attacked the bridge now, with the right tools, part of the bridge might be saved. You quickly come to the realization that the wounded are more important, and that there are simply not enough able bodied people with the right attitude and training in putting out building fires available at the moment

And then he shakes his head and notices the wounded.

Arvid follows Leto and Marcus toward the bridge, and with the help of the one remaining Maetaur, and the wounded human Groundskeeper, the injured are pulled to safety away from the burning bridge, as Calex tries to keep a look out for any attempted crossing of the lake.

Calex:
You see two bodies floating in the lake, on the north side of the bridge, but no sign of any of the Sashi-Anhain or Tafganor trying to swim across at this area. You know that this is the narrowest part of the lake, and that it quickly becomes over a hundred feet wide going northward from here. The water is cold, and not terribly deep, but it is too deep, and the bottom is too muddy, to simply ford across on foot. If anyone is going to swim across the lake it would be here, or at the east edge of Riverside where the lake joins the river once again.

Arvid speaks a few quick words of magic as Leto asses the injuries, and in only a few moments the three Maetaur, including the girl Darlene (who Marcus knows from previous encounters with the Maetaur people when they visit Riverside) are resting easy, and awake, though they are still shaken by the ordeal.

Marcus takes only a moment to check on each of the fallen, and then states the obvious. The bridge is a loss, but the bread and Board, one quarter of a mile to the north is on fire, and the fire must be put out before it spreads.

Marcus rushes after Robert who is already heady north toward the Bread and Board, and Calex moves to stand next to Leto not sure of what should happen next.

Marwan and Arvid check the wounded again to be sure they are stable, with Leto standing by when suddenly, across the lake, one of the homes in Lakeside seems to explode with a loud

“FA-WOOSH”

And flames shoot into the night sky.

When Robert and Marcus reach the Bread and Board, Patricia is directing as many as thirty villagers who are retrieving water from the North Riverside well, located between the O’lehig and Flaherty residences, and running the water in buckets to the Bread and Board, where a young boy Marcus does not recognize is using magic to raise the buckets high into the air and drop the water on the fire that is spreading across the thatched roof, while a few men with shovels throw dirt upon the wattle and daub of the buildings walls.

Patricia sees Marcus and Robert and runs toward them.

With that Leto rapidly moves as quickly as he can toward the houses, looking for the largest collection of people so he could start with putting that fire out first.

Leto, and Robert begin helping to extinguish the flames on the roof of the Bread and Board, while Marcus stares out into the darkness to the southeast. He knows exactly where his house is, and he is glad it is here on Riverside, instead of on the other side of the Lake, to the west.

When Marcus turns his head to the west, he sees two, maybe three small fires that must be houses. The retreating enemy is obviously setting fire to the village. Just then there is a sudden sprout of a great flame into the sky, and Marcus knows where it came from just by the position of the flame in relation to the lake.

Marcus:
There has been an explosion at Auria the One-Handed’s home. It is too far away to hear the sound, but by the sudden leap of the flame, and the subtle blue tint to the fire, you think that Auria must have had a supply of alcohol in her home that was very large. Many people told rumors that she maintained a small still in a shed next to her house, so, that may be what has erupted. It must have been a good surprise for those orcs, and if you are lucky, maybe the explosion took out one or two of them.

With Robert’s and Leto’s help, the fire on the roof of the bread and Board is slowly being extinguished.

There are strange currents here on the surface of the lake and the bodies seem to twirl in a macabre dance round and round in slow circles.
The bodies never come closer than twenty to thirty feet from this part of the island, and Calex would need a hook and a good long length of rope if he wanted to recover the bodies without going into the cold lake himself.

Without realizing he is alone now, Calex stands quiet for a moment, when suddenly he feels a hand on his shoulder.

It is one of the human rangers, the grounds men of Alodoa, the man who was wounded trying to protect the bridge. He speaks quietly to Calex.

Robert looks around at the faces of people he has known all his life. Smoke fills the air from the fire that has been put out on the roof of the bread and Board, and small bits of smouldering debris float all around, hanging heavy in the still night air.

Everyone around the bread and Board is covered in soot, they are tired, and some look lost.

It is a troubling look. It isn’t the look of someone who has lost his way, or who has lost a tool, and can’t remember where it was left lying on the ground, no. It is the look of someone who has lost touch with themselves, lost the ability to understand the world as they knew it to be.

It is a look of a person who has lost hope.

He searches the blank, frieghtened, lost faces for those he knows have skill in the art of healing. He does not see Auria the One-Handed, who he knows is Mister Panforey’s own sister, but he does see Mrs Toolwoad standing with her daughter, Tammy and Tammy’s boyfriend, Samuel Roarke.

When he sees Samuel Roarke, Robert remembers that the young man’s older brother, Phineas Roarke, was learning the ways of the clergy from Mister Panfory, in fact some in the village had begun to call him Brother Phineas.

Pushing away from Patricia, Robert heads straight for Mrs. Toolwoad.

Margery Toolwoad was known among all the people of Woodbridge as a good, kind, widow woman of great talent and skill. She was not learned in the arts of magic, but she was a skilled craftswoman, who could make sturdy things from leather and wood. And she knew a thing or two about simple medicinal herbs and remedies. And with Brother Phineas’ brother, Samuel with her, perhaps Robert could find out about where Phineas might be. The older Roarke knew some magic, and right now the village could use his help.

When Robert approaches Mrs. Toolwoad, a shout of alarm rises up from behind him to the south, and then a relieved call is heard as the stranger shouting out the warning relays that the people coming near the Bread and Board are strangers, yes, but they are not Tafganor nor Sashi-Anhain, but a Gymnagafolk and two human men who are not known in the village.

Arvid, Marwan, and leto, followed by the three recovering Maetaur, approach the crowd at the bread and Board, arriving just a few moments after Robert, who had left the bridge just before they had taken care of the wounded Maetaur.

Robert then runs up to Arvid, Marwan and Leto. "The fire is out here but some of the people could use some help. If any of you have any healing skill would you please take a look at Mr. Panfory? He's not looking well right now."

Samuel opens his mouth to say something but before he can, Robert is off toward the strangers.

"This whole thing bothers me, beyond the destruction delivered upon my home and people. This is not a simple raider attack. This is a calculated move. Part of something bigger. They are acting out a plan. But it frustrates me that I cannot see the end goal. I don't have enough pieces of the puzzle. And I am deeply afraid I might learn too late how to stop it." I hope it took some of the invaders with it. Too bad she lost all that good liquor. She had some nice spiced rum I was told. The Bread and Board is looking better.

He hears Robert exclaim that Auria isn't here. He isn't too surprised as her liquor stash just went up as a large Molotov cocktail.

I just saw her house and her very extensive liquor collection go up in a gout of flame. I would expect her to be far away from that explosion, as she knows what her stash is like. Marwan wanders over as Patricia is yelling, and is quite miffed at her words. As he walks over to Robert and his charges he turns and lets Patricia know this, walking backwards.

They're close enough, right? I'm having a hard time picturing where everyone is in relation to each other.

If you valued your lives over these houses on this island you should have left the day you first heard about these creatures coming. Now that we're here fighting them off with you lot on the island, there was a choice: burn the bridge or have them kill us and then kill you. We decided the bridge was worth less than the people here. If you disagree, feel free to swim over and change sides. I'm sure they've looted enough to build or pay for a new one.

Calex's eyes flash as he listens to Patricia's tirade. "Patricia! You are out of line! You should know better than most that the chaos of battle often has results no one can control. And did you forget that it was you yourself that summoned the Castletown force that by now should be only hours, perhaps a day at most, away from relieving us? We are not facing a situation yet that needs us to worry about supplies. Leto and the others deserve your gratitude, not your anger."
Calex moves over to Robert to offer a little help.

"He does not look good." Cal looks grimly up at the others." Leto, might you have on you any alchemical gear? If so, it will take me 2 hours to brew a potion that can duplicate some of what Marwan can do. With help I may be able to cut that time enough to be useful. However..."Calex turns back to Robert."you must understand. I can try my best but time is not on our side."

Leto gives a near murderous glare to Patricia but whatever response was waiting to launch behind glinting eyes is lost as the cry goes out for help.
" I don't have time to explain myself now. If you want a proof of my strength or the danger we faced when this is over go ask Robert what happened on the east bank. Now move, that mans illness isn't going to wait for us to stop squabbling." With motions writ large in irritation Leto removes a sizable kit from his pack stuffed to the gills with all manner of pungent woodland herbs. Several small and well worn texts on general medicine and treatment being parsed through as he mutter to himself over the mans symptoms after helping him into a comfortable position.
Heh. What was that you always used to say? When it rains pack for both a flood or a picnic, one of them ought to be right.

Leto is burning a use of his healing kit to boost his check by 2. Mr. Sean thats the man who had the stroke earlier in your campaign, yes? Hopefully Leto's heal check is enough to identify the issue (whatever it might be) and a possible remedy.

Leto whips another hand behind him as he works and loosens a second box which he places onto the grass next to him. " This pack contains my alchemical tools and a chunk of the mystically charged materials we were gifted with. It should likely hold enough power for such a potion." the lizardman giving the human wizard a slight smile as he gestures to the bulging pack.

As Robert quickly moves to put Mister Panforey in as comfortable a position on the ground as possible, Marwan lets Patricia know how he feels about her complaints.

Patricia’s temper rises, as the stranger tells her exactly where he stands on the issue, but before she can open her mouth, Calex lays into Patricia as well, and when he reminds her that she herself went for help from the military of the Alodoan occupiers, and that this matter is greater, far greater in scope than she was willing to admit too, she suddenly deflates, and her shoulders drop in exhaustion, her face turns down to look at her feet and the color drains from her face.

Patrica says

I’m, I’m sorry, Patricia speaks softly. Patricia sees now that Mister Panforey is struggling, and moves cautiously behind Leto, Calex, and Marwan.

Leto:
Actually, it was Connor O’lehig’s wife, L’sbirr, who suffered a Stroke.

Leto quickly gets out what supplies he can muster, while Calex goes over the things that are available looking to see what he can use. Leto takes a moment to place a hand on Mister Panforey’s forehead, and then against his chest, as he takes out a small copper cone from his healers kit, and then places it high on Panforey’s chest, and then lowers his ear to the top of the cone. Leto listens to the man’s chest and he can tell that the man’s heart is beating in a flutter, his pulse is weak, and his lungs, though clear, are barely moving any air at all.

Leto can tell that Panforey is suffering an attack of the heart muscle, and not a stroke.

With time working against them all, Calex begins mixing what he can identify, while he mutters arcane words from memory that he knows will imbue the mixture with a touch of positive energy, but can he finish the remedy in time?

Panforey, for the moment, appears stable, but very weak. His skin is cool and clammy, and he is no longer speaking. He is conscious, and responds to touches, but he may need immediate care. Calex can succeed at brewing a CLW potion, in two hours, or half that time, if Leto succeeds on a Aid Another Skill check, rolling a 10+, this should be a Spellcraft Skill Check, not an Alchemy Skill Check. The time can be further reduced to half an hour, if Marwan also pitches in. One last thing, Does Marwan currently have a CLW spell that can be used to help Mister Panfory? If so, the spell will stabilize Panforey, for 24 hours, and as long as he gets bed rest, and Heal Skill Checks with a DC 15 are made every 8 hours for 24 hours. He will recover. If the time is spent waiting on the potion, Panforey may die. I will make a Fortitude Save for Panforey to avoid succumbing to the heart Attack, the DC will be 10, if the potion is administered in half an hour, 14 if an hour passes, and 18 if two hours pass. If Mister Panforey does not die while waiting for the potion, he will require two days of rest, and six successful Heal Skill Checks of 15+ to recover, each failed Skill check adds another full day to his total recovery time, and if more than half of the Skill Checks are failed, he will suffer a second heart attack, and the process will start all over again

Marcus mentions to Calex that he has just seen Auria’s house go up in a ball of flame, and as the young mage works on the potion for Mister Panforey, he turns his head and looks to the west, and he can see several houses in flames Lakeside. From his position near the bead and Board, at the north end of Riverside, he cannot make out his own house, exactly, but there is a glow in dark in that direction, and it could very well be that his home will be burned to the ground with all of the buildings Lakeside.

When Leto asks if anyone was still left in their home, Lakeside, Patricia tells him

No, thanks to Marcus, everyone was evacuated from Lakeside, even the stubborn ones. It seems that we will lose a lot Lakeside, but at least we won’t lose anymore lives, even the livestock was brought to Riverside. In time, we will be able to rebuild. In time, I hope. But what exactly the Tafganor will do once the sun rises is anyone’s guess.

" Just buildings. Good. As to the rest I wouldn't worry, we are all exhausted and stressed from this. Life threatening danger does that. I've been expecting some angry conversations since I got home, if anything it means i get a chance to practice. Oh and the names Leto."
Leto responds as he completes his examinations frowning when they are complete. The lizard man checking the mans reactions once more before looking to those gathered tail flicking lightly.
"His heart is struggling, if anyone has healing magic to spare he desperately needs it. Admittedly I've not done much be read about attacks like this but if it isn't stalled with magic it will get progressively worse." Leto states somewhat gingerly with the mans daughter and friends in the area.
" If not anyone with skill in potions would be appreciated. The faster we can get this complete the better." That said Leto curls his overgrown tail out of the way and sets about helping Calex.
" To be honest I wasn't expecting you to actually be able to do it. Its eerie seeing a wizard make healing magic. Like a fish with legs." The man comments as he glances in the direction of the bridge and the owlbear.
" Well now that I think about it that adage really isn't that far fetched anyway."

This ought to save some time for him, but by all means, keep making that. I can't do this infinitely.
