Technically, Dave, Marikel can choose between a Reflex save or an attack of opportunity, but if he chooses to attack, he can't avoid being engulfed. It's your choice.

Vhailor doesn't have a weapon in hand, so he only got a Reflex save.

Hmm, wrote my response before reading this.
Lucky, I suppose, as otherwise I probably would have taken the attack of opportunity.

You amuse us too. :-)

Desna's stars, am I even hurting this thing?!

For clarity, there's no DR involved here; you guys are doing damage. It's just mindless so it's not reacting.

Banny, do I have you in the right spot? I didn't get the map grid exactly lined up with the one in Map Tool so the coordinates get a little off at the edges. :\

Town Drunkard 1 | HP 13/13 | AC 17 (2 Dex, 1 Dodge, 4 Armor) - FF 14 - T 13 | F+5 R+5 W+2 (modifiers apply) | Per +6, Init +2

Yep, that's the right spot, thank you.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

I was tossing up between AoO and dodge, then realized a roll below 10 was going to fail either way. Decided on the dodge since that was what I did last time, and the drawing it away from Vhailor thing too.
Up to Banny and Alicia to save us now.
:-D

DC 20 Fort saves for a first leveler is brutal...

I agree. It's balanced by a fairly easy Reflex save to avoid being engulfed and a low AC, but I still think it's a bit under-CRed.

Still, it's better than the wight in a dungeon for 1st-levelers in a certain other Paizo product. Not only does one successful hit equal no-save instant death without even bothering to roll damage, but it raises the CR of the encounter for the depleted party of survivors. :P

Ran the game, killed a newb, felt the guilt. :-/

I'm ruling no. Being engulfed makes you count as pinned, but there's no proviso that the monster can move engulfed characters as a free action. I ruled that you stay in your square, and if the monster moves away, you're no longer engulfed (or pinned). I know the classic image is people being carried around inside a gelatinous cube, but with automatic damage and high save vs. paralysis, I'm not going to give a CR 3 creature more abilities that aren't specifically spelled out.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

That was awesome. If that doesn't finish it, I suspect we were never going to win. :-)

And that's like 49 damage or something ludicrous... for a bunch of 1st levels. :-)

Female Human Rogue 4

Actually, we'd done 46 damage to it before Ali got paralyzed (and 35 of that was Ali ;P).

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

...I held a torch... :)

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Congrats to all, even our mighty torchbearer who absorbed the first attack :-). I am aware Alicia dealt bucket loads of damage and deserves much of the kudos. And Banny orchestrated a spectacular finish. While our characters may not be in the mood to celebrate...
Wheee - that was awesome. Yay team :-D

Now I'm just imagining Banny sitting there at a loss, not knowing the paralysis will wear off soon-- just knowing she's got three frozen comrades and an unconscious troll and being like "uhhhhhh..... should I start carrying people back to town...?"

Fortunately, it's only about a minute before the paralysis wears off everyone ... although I'm sure 60 seconds seems like a very long time when you're "alone" in a dungeon.

Doesn't matter to Banny's first roll, as +2 won't get her to 15 anyway, but if any more checks are necessary, Carb will have to roll them.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 fine... so cat licks aren't as useful as one would believe :P

Shall remember anon.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Sorry, I only just caught up.
Thanks for the reminder on that satchel, Joana.
I'll review my old posts and see what I did with that. :-)

Okay, with Marikel successfully stabilized, Vhailor and Alicia can narrate coming out of paralysis at their leisure. Also, once Banny has stopped panicking over Marikel's status, she is aware of items that were in the ooze that can be collected from the floor.

All right, I have a loot list up on the Campaign Info tab of all the stuff you've found, so you can see what needs to be sold, apportioned, appraised, identified, etc.

You also found the mining equipment and backpack in Ye Olde Murder Cave, which I didn't list as it's more evidence than treasure. You guys might snag the rope, grappling hook, and pitons for future use, but the rest of it is pretty valueless.

Marikel, the satchel Tyari gave you now has 2 clws and 5 holy waters. Put it on your character sheet somewhere.

Mark, remind me what language you're using for Gnome? I think it and Giant are the only non-Common tongues we've used in game yet?

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Swahili was the language for gnome.
I've also thrown down some Latin for Infernal.
Also dropped Irish down as Dwarfish... but I'll defer to Banny if she wants to use a different language.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

And I was worried I might be overdoing it with 8 channels a day. Either we've been real unlucky, or the module expects 2 clerics in play.
Harsh. :-)

The module actually expects the party not to explore the Burned Church until second level. :)

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Right... they put the body at the foot of the cliffs and nothing else nearby except the church.

Does this mean we're level 2 now? :-P

Still, if I hadn't spontaneously decided Marikel was acrophobic, he might have let us go over the cliff. I assume the mod has something in place for PCs that don't spot the ledge below. That may be a dangerous assumption though- who knows how writers think sometimes. :-)

I don't intend to leave you guys cooling your heels outside for too long, but it's been a crazy day and that's all the placeholder I have time for tonight. Someone official will arrive to deal with the prisoner when I post tomorrow.

Tyari didn't intrude on the meeting, but Marikel can certainly find her easily when he leaves the room.

Town Drunkard 1 | HP 13/13 | AC 17 (2 Dex, 1 Dodge, 4 Armor) - FF 14 - T 13 | F+5 R+5 W+2 (modifiers apply) | Per +6, Init +2

Hey guys, I've already told Joana but I'll be segueing Banny out of this campaign. I hope you all find a replacement just as doughty and you go on to kill many a giant! Banny drinks to your success.

Yes, sadly, we are bidding Banny a fond farewell. :_(

I've exchanged PMs with another player interested in providing a replacement frontliner. I'm also considering opening recruitment for a fifth just in case we lose someone else in a situation less amenable to explaining a trustable PC falling from the sky. Thoughts?

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Farewell Banny.
It was a pleasure gaming with you.
And that is a lovely finish to your character.

Now's a good place to drop and collect PC's. I still vote for 4 but that said, I guess it'll be easier to introduce 2 PC's now than a 4th now and a 5th later. Unless the GM has prisoners awaiting rescue or something similar we are unaware of.
Also, happy to help out with shared backgroundy stuff as required.

Marikel wrote:
Banny saved me. Saved us all.

Pff, see if Alicia helps you the next time you're engulfed in a gelatinous cube!

Sad to see Banny go! She and Alicia got along so well! :P

As for 4th and 5th players, I'm thinking 5 may be a good idea if only to hopefully prevent the need to recruit a 4th again after someone else leaves (heaven forfend).

Sovereign Court

Hello all. I'm halfway through the IC at the minute with a character's stat block finished.

Happy New Year, y'all! (I slept through it or I might have said this sooner....)

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

It's back! - or at least I am... wandered through the door home at 1 AM this morning and it's currently 8 ish and I'm at work... will be back in the literal as well as figurative at some point over the next 24 hours or so.

Waves to the departing Banny and incoming AK + ?

I'd suggest five as well, just in case we run into another cube... you know... the more to eat the more likely we not get gooped.

AK, I'll go over your stat block within the next couple of days. Let me know when you've got a general idea of your backstory together so we can get your character introduced.

Sovereign Court

Background PM'd.

I can send you the Herolab portfolio if you prefer?

Just give me an e-mail address by PM to attach it to.

All right, AK's character will be joining the party Soon, hopefully when the rest of you leave the building.

I'm going to note that his halfling has a riding dog, so let's be proactive and find a way for Vhailor's cat familiar to get along in the same party. I'm sure his dog is better behaved than Bumpus.

You've most likely noticed that AK's character came in at 2nd level. The rest of you guys will be leveling up shortly yourselves, so it was easier just to let him build at 2nd level.

Ansha, did you have something in mind to do in Ruby's room? Don't want to rush you if you have a plan, but I'm not sure if we're just killing time now, or what.

Just got home from a two-week-long road trip. No, no plans with Ruby.

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 2

Post a day will get easier, i've had some major meltdowns early this week...

To keep you guys in the loop, I've exchanged PMs with another player who might be providing our fifth. Stay with TV-9; we'll keep you advised.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

OooOoo - anyone we know? Inquiring minds want to know.

Is there anyone left in the PbP forums that I know that you don't, Mark? ;P

The exact character build is still up in the air for now, but, AK, let's leave open the possibility that it's someone that traveled with you from Janderhoff. It ought to be safe to assume that you traveled with a group for safety and defense, so just don't say you arrived alone and we'll have an opening to introduce another new PC, if needed.
