Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Oooo - looks pretty decent there... and aye, I'll likely throw some cash at it.

Just got a bunch of metal d6s through from a KS yesterday in fact - so it's topical to the moment. These ones.

I don't think I'd allow your new dice at the table: too hard to read. We have a player who cheats whenever he thinks he can get away with it, and he has an old d20 that has 0 to 9 on its faces twice, one set in black ink and one in red. The idea is that one color stands for 1 through 10 and the other for 11 through 20, but you can't really tell the difference between the black and the red from across the table. (Plus, I'm not altogether certain he doesn't change his mind whether black or red is high from roll to roll. I remember to make him tell me at the beginning of the session, when I let him use the die at all.)

Q Workshop makes some absolutely gorgeous dice, but they don't have a great track record for timeliness. :P

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Yeah... but I've got a bunch of dice that are more for the looking and less for the playing... not that I roll that many in anger anyways. Case in point I've got a d6 in which the pips are inset opals.

And considering I'm a KS veteran, the timeliness doesn't matter so much. I've still got things that are running two years behind schedule.

Sorry, guys. I felt a migraine coming on yesterday and tried to stave it off by avoiding screentime. Still ended up curled up in a dark room by late afternoon. Will post as soon as I get a block of free time today.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

Sorry to hear that. :( Migraines suck like Hoovers.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Aye - migraines do suck. My wife used to get them occasionally and they were never pretty.

Use the dark room as much as you need to boss - we'll be here when you emerge back to the light.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Sorry for the radio silence over the weekend - had a Monday public holiday in KL, inclusive of a Friday poker night, and Sunday dinner party that stretched into the wee hours of Monday... so haven't been able to catch up.

Should have posts up in da morning my time.

If Banny hasn't demurred by morning my time, I'll have her go along with Marikel's suggestion.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

I'll make a post in-game at some point today, but just giving a heads-up that Friday to Monday I'll be at Strategicon, and the gaming slots are scheduled to run until 1 am. *makes gurgly noises* So, while I will try and check the boards each night, I can't promise I'll get a chance to tag; if you're waiting on me, feel free to GMPC.

*toddles off to try and prepare for forty hours of PFS game slots*

That makes me tired just to read about. I lost my ability regularly to stay up to the wee hours sometime after grad school, and even then I assumed sleeping in and missing my morning classes as a necessary condition.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Yeesh - forty hours does seem to err on the torture side of the bargain. I've had the pleasure of offshore life to inure me against long hours and short sleeps... but even then most of the time it's idle mind and idle mouth. I think I'd run out of steam after maybe 1-2 slots...

The final slots must really suffer in comparison to the daytime ones. Probably the first slots in the morning, too. We used to have marathon gaming sessions before we had kids when we could spend 12 hours or more at someone's apartment eating pizza and rolling dice, and even then by the time midnight rolled around, we'd gone from in-character dialogue and cheering for natural 20s to "...your turn to roll." "...okay." "....that hits. ....your turn to roll."

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

So far, so good, actually. I've played 2 slots, GM'd one, and I'm merrily trucking. :p

As for last slots suffering, I think it depends on who shows for it. One of the funnest slots I've ever played was the last slot of a 4 day con, and everyone was a little punchy, but the role play didn't suffer-- it was just pretty hilarious. We had a dwarf dress as Cher and perform karaoke for a bar of Andorans...

As a note, the WiFi is expensive here, so I'm stuck with my phone's 4G cuz I'm cheap. So... probably no tag, but I'll go look at what's been posted.

I'll take adventuring spells tomorrow. I didn't prepare for an adventure today. :-P

Going to give Banny and Marikel a chance to interact with the campfire room if they wish. Hope dien made it back from her con all right.

Will move the gameplay thread ahead tomorrow.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

Heya! Sorry for the delay. I did indeed make it back from the con okay. I also dropped my laptop during the con, and while the laptop is currently... working... technically... the -screen- is not. At the moment, I've got an external monitor hooked up to it and I'm getting an amazing crick in my neck from looking one direction while typing another. I broke down and decided to just buy a new laptop, as this one had some issues even before this thing. It'll arrive in a weekish, probably; I can still tag, right now, it's just.... lame, with this monitor situation.

TL;DR: I'm back, but computer issues mean I may be slower than I would prefer to be for a little bit longer; do not hesitate to move things along if waiting on me.

*goes to tag*

Mark, Vhailor and Carb don't have Perception modifiers listed on their character sheet that I can find. I know you haven't spent any skill points in it, but they have enough modifiers from miscellaneous sources, it's not just their respective Wisdom bonuses. Could you drop it in there somewhere for me, please, so I don't have to calculate it? By my reckoning, I think Vhailor has a +6 with Carbonel in arm's reach, and Carb has a +5. Is that correct?

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Sorry - part of the problem of doing a build your own character sheet :)

I'll get it updated and triple double check Monday - but you've likely the reckoning of it.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor: Wis +2 Keen Senses +2 = +4
Carbonel: Wis +1 = +1

His archetypes change out Alertness, so he's not that Perceptive.

I think your initiatives are missing as well?

First combat encounter! Please post in initiative order as much as possible; if you know you're going to be AFK for a while, you can act "in advance." I'll update the map after every action (and some of you have different ranges of vision in this particular encounter, so you'll get different maps anyway). If you haven't acted within 24 hours of notification that it's your turn, I'll bot you or put you in delay, at my discretion. Weekends don't count against the twenty-four hours, so Alicia will have until Tuesday morning to act, if necessary.

Speaking is a free action, but not while you're flat-footed. At the moment, no one has the appropriate Knowledge skill to make a check. When there is one, I'll either post a spoiler under the DC or make the roll myself and inform the player what their character knows.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Are they? - I'd excuse myself by saying I was drunk when I wrote the sheet... but I don't drink. Apologies.

A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment.

Despite the soft cover from your allies, you still hit it at least. :)

When I went to roll initiative, I looked twice at Alicia's initiative. Then I asked my husband (resident number cruncher -- he can calculate point buy if I read him an array), "Is it possible for a 1st level PC to have an 11 initiative?"

Him: "No. Unless she has a 20 Dexterity."

Me: "She does."

Him: "And Improved Initiative."

Me: "She does."

Him: "And Reactionary."

Me: "Yep."

Him: "Then, yes."

When I first read it, I thought my dagger had shattered, rather than the undead-beetle's carapace.

5-ft step forward into F7, if that's a legal square to occupy

Yeah, we have that scourge of grids everywhere, the corridor on the diagonal, so we'll use common sense and our best guess to determine where we can stand. :)

Aaand I just noticed that I moved her into F6 into F7. I've adjusted the map and the game thread post, in case anyone saw it before my edit and was confused. I believe that Banny doesn't get an AoO when beetle 2 leaves G6 due to the other beetle providing soft cover, but I'm about to go double-check the rules right now.

EDIT: Okay, soft cover applies only to ranged attacks, so go-go, attack of opportunity on beetle 2, Banny.

Bleh. F6 instead of F7. Too many edits in that post. :P

So, we just got the 'ending movement in an illegal space' dilemma. I chose to let the beetles squeeze until one of them can move. By RAW, I believe I'm supposed to shunt it into an adjacent legal space, but it seems as unfair to give it a free move without provoking an AoO as to pile an AoO on top of falling out of the air.

Thoughts/suggestions/other ways you've seen it handled?

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

I'm usually fine with letting things squeeze, RAW or no.

Common sense and good storytelling. Rules are optional :-)

What the heck kind of Drow name is Gromph?! Drizzt, Jarlaxle, Zaknafein, and Gromph?!? One of these things is not like the others.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

FWIW Gromph has been in the series since the origins books... it's a slightly left of center one, but drow-y names have been inconsistent since the start as well.

Provisos and notes and such:

Myself and family will be travelling off to London for both the Rugby World Cup, and taking my mum back to the UK for the first time since she emigrated about 50 years ago. Will be fun... not so much the transit (kids plus planes = tired parents) but once we get there much fun and frivolity should ensue.

We have wifi at the accommodations I'm going to, but I can't promise that I'll be around often enough to get frequent posts in, nor verbose ones if the situation calls for it. If I can lean upon DM generosity of spirit as needed then that would be appreciated.

I'll be back in KL and ready for resumption of general service on the 9th-10th ish of October.

I recognized the Baenre house name, but I didn't remember a Gromph. Granted, it's been years since I read Drizzt's origin story. Sounds like an ogre or an orc, not an elf of any flavor.

Have a safe trip!

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

I think it's just the onomatopoeic quality of Gromph that makes it stand out a bit more... that said there's many silly names in Menzoberranzan.

Gelroos was a personal dislike, there's an Alton in Sorcere as well.

I'm a bit confused. Have we covered all known exits now, or have I misunderstood the tunnels? Did those wet prints leave via the entrance or go here (Beetle barricade) or is there another tunnel we haven't explored?

According to Banny, the wet footprints seem to have come from the tub room to the bloodstain and from there out the tunnel the way you came in. The supposition is that Kerst's body was carried out that way to be staged at the foot of the cliff.

It does appear as if the entrance by which you came in is the only way in or out. You found the storage room, the tub room, the campfire room, and this collapsed excavation behind the barricade.

Hi there.
Going to a con this weekend and continuing on holidays after.
Posting will be erratic for the next two weeks.

Banny Kneebreaker wrote:
Sorry for my slowness.

Not a problem. Half the party's on vacation for the next two weeks anyway, so I'm not going to push the pace too much. We'll try to keep the thread poking along without leaving Marikel and Vhailor too far behind.

I'm actually going to be visiting family for the next few weeks too, but I'm not sure how much that'll impact my posting past Monday.

Wow, you guys have done a good job of coordinating your time off. ;)

Those of you who are available this weekend, vote: Keep searching the cave system, or report back to Rodrick/Halgra/whoever what you've discovered? Or something else?

I think we should go back to Halgra- the tunnels seem to be a dead end for now.

Same I guess. :-\ I feel like there's something we're missing, but it's not occurred to me yet or to Banny, so.... Yep, I'll vote for return back to town and do some talkin'.

Huh. So apparently Golarion has an elf named Gronk, courtesy of the Adventure Card Game. :P

We're getting ever closer to the day when my generic character name for any of my husband's dwarves, Fighty McDumpstat, won't cause a head to turn or an eye to blink.

Halgra- but via burned church and hopespring - just to make things difficult. Also, Marikel won't suggest it, but we haven't checked the path down, to see if it meets up with the same cave, or goes somewhere else.

Ali should actually be waiting inside the church in front of the double-doors to the haunted area ahead of Marikel.

I've moved her to J7 on my copy of the map, and she'll be there the next time I upload. Let me know if you prefer a different square.

Yeah, these first couple of encounters haven't been very friendly to Vhailor's spell set: vermin and undead ... not to mention undead vermin.
