This is the thread for OOC discussion. Please check in, and start rounding yourselves out as a party. While combat will certainly be an important facet of this campaign, it is also important for you to mesh as a team outside of combat, so make sure you choose your skill ranks and languages wisely.
In particular, Knowledge skills are going to be very important, both in regard to combat and otherwise. Outside of combat, Knowledge (geography) is how you make sure you're heading towards your destination. In combat, I make no warranties that everything you run across will be of an appropriate CR. Sometimes you may run across something that's way out of your league, so it behooves you to be able to make monster knowledge checks before deciding to engage a particular foe. When you make a monster knowledge check, in addition to the information you earn about the creature, I will also give you some indication of the relative strength of an average specimen (i.e. the Bestiary entry) and yourselves. Use this information to decide whether you want to fight or not :).
If you have other questions, feel free to ask.

SirSafeway (Falgard Dalvik) reporting in.

Just so you're aware, I've changed Falgard slightly. He's now a Two-Handed Fighter instead of a normal one, and he took Monkey Style instead of Snake Style. These changes have been reflected in his ailias.

Also, do you rule that reach characters threaten the corners of their reach? By RAW you can't, since the square is technically 15ft away, but I've seen many GMs allow it. Just wondering so I know what I can and can't do.

i mentioned this already in the (new) recruitment thread, but my wife and both my children have the flu so everything is getting done slowly right now... i created an alias for Ulfgar and will set it up as quickly as i can, but it might (will) take a little longer than i'd like. I'm sorry for any inconvenience it causes.

Grand Lodge

Bare with me, my knowlage of forum shortcuts and scripts is limited. I will have my charecter ready by tommorow.

Human [Ulfen]* Bloodrager/Bard 1

ok, i still need to spend my potions/scrolls fund but everything else is completely set.

Human [Ulfen]* Bloodrager/Bard 1

well... maybe not 100% set... i keep going back and forth on one of my traits... i have 2 questions that will help me decide:

1. if i take heirloom weapon to grant me proficiency with a longhammer, can i take weapon focus[longhammer]? (i think by RAW the answer is 'yes, but only that one longhammer' but i wanted to check)

2. Kols' favored weapon is listed as "hammer"... does that mean any hammer, or is there 1 specific hammer (and if the latter, would you pick which 1 or could i)?

basically i'm deciding if i want to sink a bunch of feats and a trait into getting crusader's flurry so i can flurry with a longhammer... which probably wouldn't be much more effective than using my fists but seems awesome to me anyways, but i'd like to know if it's even feasible before i try it...

@other players- GM said to check out our skills/languages to try to cover as many bases as possible... my only languages are Common and Dwarven, and my only skills are acrobatics and sense motive... sorry i'm not bringing much to that party. i'm not opposed to trading out acrobatics for perception if that works better for the party, but i'm guessing there are already a few people with perception...

ps- gold is spent, ready to rock and roll :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
Between us we have the following languages covered:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Languages:
Common, Dwarven, Giant, Gnome, Undercommon, Draconic, Sylvan, and Orc.
(though, by RAW, we should only be able to have Common, Dwarven, Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon. So no Draconic or Sylvan, unless of course the DM allows it)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
Here are the skills for everyone; If I'm wrong please correct me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Falgard Dalvik:
Acrobatics, Climb, Perception, Sense Motive, Stealth

Forso Understone:
Bluff, Craft (Alchemy), Diplomacy, Disable Device, Intimidate, Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (Dungeoneering), Knowledge (Local), Knowledge (Nature), Knowledge (Nobility), Knowledge (Planes), Perception, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, Stealth

Mattock of Torhold:
Acrobatics, Appraise, Climb, Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (Geography), Knowledge (Nature), Perception, Ride, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, Stealth, Swim

Riuk Blood:
Diplomacy, Intimidate, Knowledge (Dungeoneering), Knowledge (Nature), Sense Motive, Stealth, Survival

Trask Morgoth:
Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Knowledge (History), Knowledge (Local), Perception, Perform (percussion), Spellcraft

Ulfgar Helmhammer:
Acrobatics, Sense Motive

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
And the skills nobody has ranks in are:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Skills:
Disguise, Escape Artist, Fly, Handle Animal, Heal, Knowledge (Engineering), Knowledge (Religion), Linguistics, Sleight of Hand, Use Magic Device.

Of those, I think Knowledge (Religion) and Use Magic Device are most important for somebody to pick up.

Human [Ulfen]* Bloodrager/Bard 1

I could trade sense motive for know[religion] if nobody else wants to, I guess... With my 10 Int I'll never be very good at it though (and I'd be giving up a skill with a +4 stat modifier to get it)

Sir Safeway wrote:

No, I go with RAW (but I also don't make a habit of having enemies come in from a diagonal).

Ulfgar Helmhammr wrote:

The idea of flurrying with a longhammer seems cool enough I'm willing to bend a few rules (cf. Riuk's Badger O'Doom).

Sir Safeway wrote:

Wizards get Draconic as a bonus language option in addition to the choices available from their race. As I'm going through, I'll check to see if something similar is going on with Sylvan.

Sir Safeway wrote:

Technically, Trask can cover Knowledge (religion) via bardic knowledge.

Understandable. But if you rule that, I think it ought to also be ruled that if an enemy approaches me from my 15ft diagonal, or leaves my 5ft diagonal into my 15ft diagonal, they provoke while moving through that 10ft area in between. In other words, I essentially threaten the space between the two diagonals, but not the diagonals themselves, and if they move through that they provoke (which makes sense). But if they are standing in the 15ft diagonal and move away from me, they don't (again, makes sense).

Right you are, I forgot about Bardic Knowledge. That means Engineering and Religion are technically covered.

excellent. i'll leave my skills as they are and tweak my traits/gear (replacing armor expert with heirloom weapon; replacing MW chainshirt with MW studded leather and a longhammer)

edit: tweaks done :)

Personally I think it's reasonable to allow Sacred Fist warpriests to still be proficient in their deity's chosen weapon, what with the intense devotion to both their god and their martial prowess and all.

well, i certainly wouldn't complain about that but i wasn't about to push my luck, lol.

The Sylvan was an unfortunate leftover from an elf-wizard build.

Common and Dwarven. Dwarves with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon.

Let me switch to Terran.

On skills, next level I can diversify knowledges a bit more.

Male Dwarf Monk of the Four Winds 1, Empiricist Investigator 1

Checking in a bit late, sorry about that!

Forso is a skill/knowledge monkey. The early chardev goal is to out at least a point into everything over the first few levels. His social skills are garbage *now* but at level 3, he'll be a competent face, and I can put points in any knowledge needed without trouble. I'll have all of them running at a range of +9-+15 by level 4 or 5 I imagine.

Sorry been a long week at work.

So I have good skills in dungeon and nature . My sense motive will be able to get high soon since I'll get half my level as a bonus to it. And I'll be raising my diplomacy as well. I'm an archer so I'll be handleding that.

Mattock wrote:

Duly noted. What were your final choices on school specialization and opposed schools? Also, I haven't added up the cost of your gear, but (just looking at it) it seems like you should have more gold or more gear. And your Wisdom bonus does apply to your flat-footed AC. The only time you lose it is if your immobilized or helpless.

Forso wrote:

No problem. There are a few things to fix on your character sheet. I don't use Hero Points. You bought studded leather armor, but you didn't include it in your AC. Your allowed to choose ancient emnity, but I will tell you that you're going to be fighting orcs and goblinoids more often than elves. It's hard to tell with just total modifiers listed, but I think you might be missing a skill rank. You should spend some more gold; at the very least you need adventuring gear.

Just a question how fast will the pace of this game be? I know there are a lot slower than voice or face games just wondering.

I'm aiming for at least one post a day once we get started. Right now we're waiting on a couple of people to finish/post their characters.

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Sarpadian, I've still got a little buying to do. How do you feel about buying scrolls at half price if Mattock can cast them? Obviously scrolls of spells he can't cast would be full price. Additionally how would you feel about Mattock learning more spells by studying scrolls?

Scrolls of spells that are in your spellbook are half price. This includes both the spells you added to your spellbook for free as your starting allotment and any scrolls you choose to add with your starting gold. I'll let you add spells from scrolls you run across while adventuring, but for spells you want to acquire now you're better off adding them from the spellbooks in the library that the Nalbrin wizards maintain.
Let me know what spells you want, and I'll decide if they're in the spellbooks. The cost for a cantrip is 5 gp, and 1st level spells cost 10 gp. I'll let you "take 10" on the Spellcraft check to add a spell to your spellbook, so you can add spells of your non-opposed schools (whenever you decide what those are) to your spellbook automatically. Spells from your opposed schools take a -5 penalty, so you won't be able to suceed automatically. Make sense?

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Makes sense. And quite generous. You may want to cap what I can learn under this offer.

I'd settled on Abjuration as his specialty with Conjuration and Enchantment as the opposition schools. It's a different combination from any I've tried before. I usually end up leaning on conjuration quite a bit so this should force me to think more.

Spells desired, from most desired to least:

Endure elements (A)
Burning Hands (Ev)
Cause Fear (N)
True Strike (D)
Magic Weapon (T)
Comprehend Languages (D)
Detect Undead (D)
Hold Portal (A)

Before spending money on these spells, Mattock has 412.9 gp left .

I'll be making a spare spellbook for him to leave at home. So I assume that to write spells into both will double the 5 and 10 gp price you listed for learning from the library. So he should have 252 for scrolls if he can get all these spells.

Now that I reread the rules, there's supposed to be an additional fee for copying from a spellbook, equal to half the scribing cost. So, at the risk of being found less generous :), I'm going to revise the costs to 7 gp and 15 gp. Only the last two seem too specialized to be a part of the kind of library I was envisioning, so you can have the first six. I will be enforcing the rules on spellbook space, so keep in mind that each of your spellbooks has 100 pages. Each spell takes up a number pages equal to its level (except for cantrips, which still take up a full page).

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Fair enough. I'll add the first 6 spells to my sheet and update soon.

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

I think I'm all set. To keep it simple, I only bought scrolls of spells that he knows, else I'd be asking if he could learn those too, and that would seem an abuse of generosity.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Big crush at work til Friday. Will post as I am able.

So what all is left to do before we're ready to get this started?

We've been waiting on a couple of people to get their characters in order. I've just sent PMs to the players in question. If I don't hear from them by tomorrow night, I'll reopen recruitment in order to replace them.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Mattock held things up a little and I'm guessing now Sarpadian has run into real life. Occasional pauses are not unusual in PbP.

Edit: Ninja'd by Sarpadian.

So, is Mattock good to go then?

Sarpadian:
I must admit I was a little worried at your absence too and checked your posts. Ended up reading the throne room scene, which was awesome.

My question is, how closely will the 2 tables follow each other? Or how hard should I stay out of the other thread, and maybe the Allence thread?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

therealthom:
Everything seems to be fine. The two tables of this campaign will follow each other fairly closely at first (I plan on copy/pasting the first post, for example), but as the parties make different decisions, the tables will drift apart. The Allence thread shouldn't have any spoilers for you in it; the plots are completely independent.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Great. I can't wait to start.

Did you hear from the lagging players?

I did not.

Foreso and Trask

Human [Ulfen]* Bloodrager/Bard 1

GM- can you change the name of the recruitment thread? With it labeled 'closed' a lot of people may not be looking at it...

I tried, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. That's why I posted in the original recruitment thread too with a link to this campaign.

Sarpadian named the clans after our characters. Make one up or use an existing one.

At this point, use one of the existing ones. I don't want to retcon another throne into the Hall ;).
