Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Thirteen Tiger nods

"You were wise to bring this to our attention, my sons. I can destroy this artifact, but I will need to prepare a chamber to ensure no evil survives its destruction. Can you leave it here? I am sure we can find some renumeration for bringing it to our attention."

Thirteen tiger snaps his fingers and an underpriest brings forward a bag. He holds it forth.

"There are 500 gold coins within. Would you find that satisfactory?"

"Most satisfactory, Father. In truth, I was not expecting to be rewarded; but with the long trek we still have ahead of us, our group could certainly use the extra supplies this would buy. My thanks."

San will divide that evenly among everyone; I think that comes to 70gp; if no one has an objection, San will donate the left over 10 coins to a charity, orphanage, or some other similar organization here.

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten foot passes his 70 gold straight into the offerings bowl of the temple, before heading to get a drink.

Male Human Sorcerer 5

So, that's 1320gp to each person, except for San who only gets 10t0gp. EDIT: 70 per person, not 700 per person.

What's the most ostentatious magic item / high-quality weapon on the market within that price range?

What exactly are you looking for? Kukri? Ranged?

The temple has a collection plate. San hands over the 10 gold coins and the underpriest attending it bows to him.

Quetzalcoutal or Two Rabbit?

Ten heads back to the temple of Cayden/Two Rabbit. The priestesses of Calistria/Xochiquetzal have come over for an inter-faith visit and dance party.

Once we get Vilya's weapon set we can move on if no one else has any issues

As far as weapons go, either a mace or a machete.

Quetzalcoutal, the temple he was in when he received the money, he has a weird feeling that money earned from an evil item is bad JuJu.

Ten Foot dad dances with the best of them, he is a big man and he shows all the grace of a drunken careering rhino as he guides his partner around the floor, no foot is safe from his size 14 feet.

The one saving grace is he knows how to party and he is entertaining fellow, he especially fond of tall tale competitions.

Looking at the PFPRD, a +1 weapon would be 2,000+weapon cost. A masterwork would be 300+weapon cost. If you want a jewel-and-precious metal-inlaid weapon I'd say an extra 500 GP charge should handle it. You can find any combination of these in the town souk

Ten makes some new friends, expecially one priestess of Calistria/Xochiquetzal named Twelve Ruby. She is a tall woman, something of an anomaly about here where the morphic tends to be under 1.75 meters. She is dressed in a silk robe embroidered with the wasps of Calistria and the birds and butterflies associated with Xochiquetzal. Despite Ten's rudimentary dance moves, the couple manage to have an enjoyable evening ...

The next morning Ten arises and shakes off Cayden's hammering with a fresh draught of ale. He looks fondly back at the rumpled bed and the sleeping form of Twelve Ruby, then heads out to find his companions.

OK, Davi/Tobias and Nathan/Iz are absent, but I want to get moving out. Shout out if there is anything left to do, and then hopefully by this weekend's end y'all can pile into Egan's new boats and start heading down the Blue River!

HAPPY ANNOUNCEMENT! WE HAVE A DICE FUNCTION EMBEDDED IN THE BBCODE NOW!!

*bracket*dice*bracket* 1d20 *bracket*/dice*bracket*

where *bracket* stands in for "[" turns into this:

1d20 ⇒ 11

YAY!

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

trial run only

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15

EDIT: Nice!

OK, moving the action along ..

The headwaters of the Blue River are near Capitutec. Egan's newly-hired river man, Karl Ogunthorpe, arrives in the dawnlight, looking a bit frazzled, but with a backpack and a longsword strapped to his belt. He also carries a large blowgun across the top of his backpack. He and the party pick up the two canoes and head down the path to the stream that will join into the mighty Blue River

OK, if I hear nothing from y'all, I'll assume you are done with your town stuff. Vilya, you had asked for a weapon, so we can retcon that. Anyone else, yell out or we are off into the jungle!

Looking at the prices, I think she's going to wait until the next trip into town for an upgrade.

Not that is is massively important, while ten has some meat, he has not got the two veg to go with it, having been voluntarily castrated so that he could never pass his cursed form onto another generation. So while he can enjoy woo hoo, there is no danger of an unwanted mini me. (is that too much information?)

Ten Foot spends the large part of the next day with a stupid child like grin on his face and keeps chuckling to him self for no apparent reason.

He does seek out Egan to confess that he does not know how to swim, is this going to be a problem, can he get a flotation device of some sort, his shield is wooden, would that work?

ACK!

That's fine Ten, I was just kinda extrapolating the action so we could get along.

Bribes always welcome

OK, rolling on

The fairly fragrant unshaven river rat Karl leads the party down a well-maintained path through the forest to a nearby stream. He warns them again not to stick hands in the water, and the two canoes get shoved out into the fast-moving current.

Each canoe is meant to take four regular-sized folks and their gear. Karl is in the lead canoe. Since Vilya is fairly small, she can probably sit in the canoe that Ten isn't in and there won't be a problem. I will assign seats if no one states a preference by tomorrow

The first day of travel goes well. They have to debark several times and portage the canoes because of waterfalls or bad rapids. The sun rises and the air gets muggier as they descend back into the more tropical regions of the jungle.

Bribes always welcome

OK assuming everything is rolling along

The river trip starts well, with no complications. The first few days the travellers do well, making it down the sides of the Blue Mountains without too much problem. The mountainous streams they follow occasion frequent portaging, but this works out well. On the third day of travel they have reached the main river leading deeper into the jungle. The foliage has increased in size and thickness along the river bank. They make a camp for the evening in a small clearing. The hoots and howls of various jungle beasts salt the air.

I am going by original posted watches if no one objects

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Sounds good to me.

Bribes always welcome

Karl stays on middle watch with Iz and Egan. The fire is banked after a quick evening meal, and the party gets some rest.

During the middle watch, Iz, Karl and Egan hear a thrashing in the trees. A screechy grunt can be heard from the area.

Actions?

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan readies his bow, and tries to determine if he recognizes the sounds.

Perception 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (1) + 19 = 20
Knowledge Nature 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

I don't think I've rolled above a 6 on the new site dice roller yet. Think I'll go back to IC and cut and paste

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Post Monster is finding my posts particularly tasty at the moment.

Ten Foot can't swim and getting into the canoe wipes the smile off his face, he also tends to row with a lot of gusto, a lot of energy and splashing is involved.

It's obvious it is a large dino. What kind, Egan has no clue..

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"Iz, get ready to wake the others". "I'm going to see what this thing is".

Egan tries to sneak up on whatever is making the noise, and get a better look at it.

Stealth (1d20+13=31) very,very sneaky

Perception, in Jungle, vs animals. (1d20+21=32)

Egan:

Spoiler:
Egan slips into the bush like a silent ghost. He treads lightly through the thick underbrush for a few dozen meters, then he sees an odd sight. A dinosaur, without front arms, rather long leathery wings smells the air with a long forked tongue. The beast is heading towards the camp.

Knowledge Nature (1d20+8=12)

Egan sends Whisperwing back to the camp to start waking people, and begins moving back there himself.

"zzzzz....."

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Are we all awake yet?

Egan's new friend flies over the camp and screeches at the group. Egan follows soon after, waking the others quickly as a gurgling roar comes from the jungle's interior.

Everyone's up, and I need a group initiative

Egan has never seen a dino like this, but he does remember hearing about the dracosaur hybrids that haunt the jungle hereabouts

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

group initiative 1d20 ⇒ 5

for crying out loud ...

San wakes up, realizing something's wrong. He grabs his bow, and looks about for the disturbance.

perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Female Human

Vilya's been angry lately, mainly due to the lack of available shiny things in the village marketplace. Being woken up in the middle of the night by giant angry reptiles, however, is the last bloody straw. She makes a break for the undergrowth, scanning for a blind spot from which she can attack. Vilya is going to make this bastard pay for interrupting her beauty sleep.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan looks for a good place to hide and ambush the creature. Preferably a group of trees to close together for the Dino to be able to get into. He will then draw one of his "Explosive" arrows and draw it to his bow. Never a better time to find out what these do, he thinks to himself.

Perception (1d20+19=21)

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Its going to take something much bigger or with at least 8 legs to wake up Ten Foot from his dreams of Twelve Ruby. He bats Whisperwing away with his palm and rolls over to cover his ears, the sounds of others rousing finally finds its way into his subconscious and he sits up and groggily looks at the others. "What is it now?" he mumbles.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa grabs Raptorstrike from where it is laying beside her and pats "Wheezy" on the flank, making sure he is awake. "Wheezy", hearing the movements, backs up and moves off to hide in the underbrush, not sure about the approaching noise.
"Wheezy" Stealth Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
She turns towards the noise and waits, ready to lash out at whatever is approaching.

Egan finds a tree branch junction to hide in. Just as he gets there the dino emerges, flapping it's winged forearms. It sniffs the air and bulls in after Wheezy.

I am assuming that the dino saw Wheezy running to hide and was attracted to this.

The large dino snaps at Wheezy with its oversized jaw

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 242d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 = 11

Wheezy's blood spurts from a vicious wound, and the Dar'mok squeals in agony

Post actions!

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Screaming in fury at the creature as it closes it's jaw around "Wheezy", Jolesa races in and attempts to strike the creature with Raptorstrike.

Attack Creature with Raptorstrike activating Smite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3) + 3 = 10

"Wheezy" turns with a screech and Leaps at the creature, raking with his talons.

Leaping Slash: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Damage: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1) + 3 = 8

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San lets loose an arrow from his bow at the odd dinosaur.

composite longbow 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

With some disgust at his aim, San sets his bow down and draws Ghostfetter from its sheath in preparation ...

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan from his hiding place lets loose one of his new exploding arrows at the creature.

Hunters Bow (1d20+11=23)

Not sure what to do about the damage...haven't shot one yet. Also remember Egan is +2 in initiative in the Jungle enviornment

Female Human

Vilya's starting to have a system when it comes to dealing with large, angry reptiles. With an ear-piercing shriek, she springs from her hiding place. Vilya lands on the beast's back and drives her kukri into its gnarled flesh with both hands.

Sneak attack (kukri): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 ; confirm critical: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 ; damage: 1d6 + 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + (4, 4) + 2 = 14

Male Human Sorcerer 5

With a muttered word and arcane gesture, Tobias sends a bolt of magic at the creature.

Casting Magic Missile. 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 31d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten Foot spends the first round stumbling to his feet, groping around for his axe and waiting for his (dark)vision to adjust to the camp fire.

"Huh? What?" he looks around still not fully awake, his sleeping hat bobble bouncing around as he does so.

AC for this battle is 11.

Egan the Hunter's bow is a +1 bow that gives you a +4 vs. your favored enemy

Tobias' arcane bolts strike true, as does Egan's arrow. The beast screeches and paws the air.

Iz darts forward and slices at the scaly beast

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 232d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 5) + 3 = 11

His attack carves a jagged furrow in the dino's hide

I'll give Seven a chance to post today, if not, then I'll DMPC him
