GM Zed |
With the swarm having fully subsided and the group having, at least partially, regrouped and gathered their strength it is time to wade into the water...without the immediate threat of combat, you realise just how unnaturally cold the water appears to be...
...moving steadily along the tunnel, keeping a careful watch for swarming crustaceans or the return of the mephit, you arrive at the first hallway. Yasmin's previous observations that the room is a dead-end with detritus heaped in one corner is a fairly accurate summation...although you now also notice that the odour coming from the room, presumably from the heaped up waste, is quite repulsive...
Moving on down the tunnel to the next hallway?
GM Zed |
Moving up to the hallway where the Aquan speaking figure disappeared into, Rallos looks around the corner and sees a much larger room. The brackish water in the room is clear and, in comparison to the previous room, smells fresh and clean... There is a hallway leading to the east from this room.
Even from the entrance, you can feel a gentle current pulling to the south - where, beyond a wall of rubble, a tumbling waterfall can be heard.
There is no sign of the mysterious figure.
Pertreeko |
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
Back at the edge of the water, Pertreeko lowered his arms in relief as the swarm is destroyed, allowing the angry thundercloud to subside a turn early to allow them to pass. Wordlessly, he nods in satisfaction to the others, and follows them to the large, brackish room.
The avian's senses are on high alert, crackling with energy from the spell he just cast. He cocks his head to one side, listening carefully, and observing the way the current tugs on his feathers...
GM Zed |
Pertreeko - there are waves forming within the room that appear to contradict the way in which the current is flowing - looking for a few seconds, it appears that the waves are staying in one particular location...furthermore, your spirit sense is tingling with the notion that something from another plane of existence is nearby...
Yasmin al Akbar |
Yasmin follows along silently, searching for magical auras as she goes.
GM Zed |
Ea – Yes, Deathwatch and Shield of Faith are still active. Taking a peek around the corner, you see nothing of note – another waterlogged room – until Pertreeko points out the standing wave. Focussing on that point, you start to see a stream of life energy originating from the wave and trailing out through the corridor to the east of the room.
Yasmin - you don't detect any magical auras along the tunnel.
Ea Zalinsel |
For once, Ea is perplexed
Beware, all. I don't understand. All my human eyes see is waves and water, but I ...sense some life force in it. I have no good words to explain how I can "feel" the stream of life into the water.
She readies herself for combat
Pertreeko |
"It's there," the silent druid speaks up, pointing with a long taloned finger at the spot that he noticed was moving. "My spirit senses are telling me that something has come through from another plane of existence to this world. It might be some kind of water demon, or an elemental. Be wary."
Grayface |
Water demon? This place grows more and more curious.
"Can it speak? Do we have any good reason to believe it to be friendly?"
Grayface takes the lead and sloshes into the room slowly. His sword and shield are drawn but he makes an effort to not appear threatening, if that is even possible.
Passive diplomacy: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0 LoL...
GM Zed |
As Grayface boldly enters the room, the standing wave grows in height - quickly adopting a shape that mirrors Grayface's form. It stands erect for a second and then crashes down as breaking surf - surging towards the warrior.

Nice roll, Grayface. :P
Rallos Therinor |
as diplomatic as a kick in the face...lol
We cannot fight that thing in the hallway....follow me.
Rallos dashes into the room, into the upper left corner.
I am on my tablet. I want to move 2 squares directly underneath my token. Will move when back on my computer. Also, I am going to go full defense this round.
GM Zed |
As Rallos moves into the room, the building wave changes direction and, taking a humanoid form, crashes against the tiefling...drenching the rogue as it slams him against the wall.
Water Elemental, Slam vs Rallos (Power Attack / Water Mastery): 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 1 + 1 = 26, hitting for 1d8 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 10
Everyone may take their turn now
Grayface |
Gray moved quickly to help in the battle against this animate wave creature. Seeing a companion under attack instantly quickened the pulse and raised the battle instincts of the scarred fighter.
Slosh swish slosh swish
Hurrying through the high waters at any semblance of speed was difficult. Gray moved into the room, sending frothy waves in his wake. He tried to make room for his friends behind to join the fray. Once in position, Grayface tried what seemed impossible to him-- to attack water with a sword.
I probably provoke an AoO from the elemental. I moved through a threatened space to get where I am now.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Grayface |
It was a deliberate move. I wanted to leave room for another combatant to join us, and not have to provoke. I figured if anyone should provoke the AoO, it should be me.
GM Zed |
Cool - was just checking...
As Grayface follows Rallos into the room, his struggles against the turbulent water prevent him from moving with his normal martial grace...the animated water, seeing an opportunity, crashes at the warrior but succeeds in nothing more than drenching him...
Water Elemental, Slam vs Grayface (AoO / Water Mastery): 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 1 = 10, missing
Glad to be fighting a more conventional opponent, Grayface drives his blade deep into the water - as the sword cuts through the water, there is a roar like a tidal wave crashing across rocks...somehow the animated water seems a little diminished.
Ea Zalinsel |
Ea takes her place at Greyface's side, and fight the watery thing. She has an hard time to keep her footing on the slippery ground, and can't put too much strenght in her blow.
Morningstar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Dmg: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
What is this? How can we defeat it quickly?
Know Planes: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Yasmin al Akbar |
Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 Yasmin was pretty sure she knew a thing or two about this water elemental.
One thing she hoped was that it would be particularly vulnerable to magical fire! Does she know whether that's true? If she knows it's immune, she won't do this: A gout of fire arcs dangerously close to Grayface's head, before slamming into the water elemental!
Burning Arc: 7d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6, 2, 4, 5, 6) = 30; Reflex DC17 for half damage.
Pertreeko |
Pertreeko tries to think of a way to assist his friends without bringing them accidental harm as well...but he fears that the water-borne foe makes his lightning too dangerous to use, and his Produce Flame spell worse than useless. Rather lamely, he infuses Yasmin with Guidance instead, and looks for a good opening.
+1 for you, Yasmin.
GM Zed |
As with other elementals, all water elementals have their own unique shapes and appearances. Most appear as wave-like creatures with vaguely humanoid faces and smaller wave “arms” to either side. Another common form is that of any aquatic creature, such as a shark or octopus, but made entirely out of water.
Water elementals are stronger when in contact with a body of water...and have the ability to create whirlpools that can drag people under. As with all elementals, the water elemental can range in size from 3 ft to at least 20ft - the more powerful ones having almost tsunami like power.
Ea's mace bludgeons into the wave before Yasmin, shouting for Grayface and Ea to duck, lets loose a powerful blast of fire...the humanoid shaped wave, unable to avoid the blast, instantly disperses in a cloud of superheated steam that condenses quickly to mist...and quiet returns to the room...
Looking to the east, there is a much larger room whilst, to the south, there is a pile of rubble through which water is flowing, in a small waterfall, into another room. There is no sign of life in either direction...
Yasmin al Akbar |
Is the water still flowing in an odd manner?
Ea Zalinsel |

Pertreeko |
Pertreeko blinks as he watches Yasmin dispatch the water elemental with flames. "I thought my Produce Flame spell would have been ineffective against the creature, but if your spell worked, so likely would have mine. I will remember this for future encounters." so saying, the druid peers about the room with his Spirit Sense, checking to ensure they had no other stealthy company among them.
Seeing none, he will move as close to the waterfall as he can, even if he has to enter the water to do so. He will lightly step on the rocks forming the waterfall, not trusting his whole weight to them in case they slip loose.
GM Zed |
Rallos – The Water Elemental rolled a 19 - for a total Attack roll of 26…so most definitely a hit – sorry!!!!
Yasmin – The strange turbulence within the water in this room appears to have completely subsided with the destruction of the Water Elemental.
Moving towards the rubble, Rallos and Pertreeko don’t find anything of note trapped within the various items of stonework and detritus that acts as a partial dam, slowing the water flow through into the room to the south. Looking into the room to the south, it is apparent that the ceiling height which is about 7 feet in the room that you are standing in, drops quickly to about 2 feet (with the water level being about 1 foot below that ceiling)… peering over the dam, Rallos confirms that the floor level in the southern room is some way below the level of the room that you are in – the filth of the water in that room though prevents him from determining just how deep the water is…
Jorqual, Stealth (Invisible): 1d20 + 40 ⇒ (3) + 40 = 43

The room to the east, which is illuminated by a silvery glow to the north, seems to be a relatively large room with several alcoves to the north and to the south.
Ea Zalinsel |
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Ea enters the place cautiously
There's something big in the water... in the western part of the room..did you see it?
She tries to point the general direction to the others
Rallos Therinor |
sorry about that....that's what I get for not wearing my glasses....
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
There is something in the water there.....look.
Rallos points out the larger wave to the rest of the group.
Pertreeko |
Alighting atop a rock, the druid sees what he can see in the room beyond. Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
He immediately sees that there's something in there. "There looks to be another water elemental to contend with..." he warns his friends, nodding to Rallos' warning.
Time to take the initiative and soften this thing up before my allies engage it, the druid thinks to himself.
"Have at you, fiend!" the druid cries, pointing his finger at the circling hump in the water and aiming another lightning bolt at it.

Thanks for the heals Ea!
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
In response to Ea, Grayface says "I see something in there too, just there, floating in the water."
Gray watches Pertreeko with a little trepidation as he steps around the detritus but admires his agile footing. Suddenly the tengu perked up, focusing on something in the next room. After the lightning bolt, the fighter knew it was time for battle again.
GM Zed |
As Pertreeko's lightning crackles over the wave that was basking in the light, the water given form rises up... Fierce, towering and with torrents of water pouring from it, it surges towards the gathered adventurers... A maw opening in the crest of the wave...

My Burning Arc spell needs a ruling. If I am within range of the primary target of the spell (here 40 feet), but not in range of the secondary target (which must be within 15 feet of the primary target), can I still hit both targets with the spell? This will determine whether the crab gets hit or not.
"Here's the plan - I'll freeze the elemental, and you can shatter it!"
Yasmin moves to the entrance of the hallway. Ice forms between her hands and shoots straight at the elemental.
Icy Arc vs Elemental: 7d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 1, 6) = 20 Reflex DC17 for half
As soon as it hits, the ice seems to ricochet and head toward the crab.
Icy Arc vs. Crab: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3) = 11 Reflex DC15 for half
GM Zed |
Yasmin - Can't see any reason why I would rule against that
A crust of ice briefly forms on the approaching wave before shattering and ricocheting onto the crab...shards of ice piercing the creature's shell...

GM Zed |
The wave accelerates across the room as it sheds it's icy crust and, slamming into the narrow corridor, fills the narrow space up to the ceiling with a tidal wave of dark water, foam and fury... Yasmin feels the full brunt of the wave as, with a tremendous explosion of noise, it starts to pour from the narrow confines of the corridor.
Water Elemental, Slam vs Yasmin (Squeezing, Water Mastery, Power Attack): 1d20 + 12 - 4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 12 - 4 + 1 - 2 = 18, hitting for 1d8 + 5 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 + 4 = 14
Everyone may take their turn now - the Crab shall delay to act at the same time as the Elemental in the next turn (making things easier for the GM to run)...
Yasmin al Akbar |
After taking a heavy blow, Yasmin backs away cautiously so as to avoid any further attacks. Withdraw as a full round action.
*Edit* - Yasmin can't do what she wanted to do, because she still eats an AOO. So, new plan:
Finding herself under duress, Yasmin attempts to cast a spell! Casting Defensively: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25. Suddenly, she vanishes from view! She then moves back against the wall. Casting Vanish. Invisible for 4 rounds.
Grayface |
Gray's eyes grew to size of gold coins at the sight of the corridor filling with angry, living water. The way it lashed out at Yasmin was intimidating and the warrior was secretly terrified of the creature. He had never dreamed of a monster that could appear as benign water, and yet have such strength and presence.
The fighter made a decision, rash as it may be, but it was to save his friends -- he moved right into the water devil's path to take it head on and hopefully to prevent it moving deeper into the room. Standing ahead of the wall of water, Grayface put his sword to work.
I believe I will provoke an AoO. I moved south 5' (difficult terrain), which is in the elemental's threatened area. I believe I would have the benefit of the wall's cover though.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Pertreeko |
Pertreeko summons the ley-energy of the Crystal Spire around him to empower his fireballs. Yasmin proved that magical flame could be a deterrent to these creatures, even though they are made entirely of water...perhaps his spell could be effective too.
Casting Place Magic +1 Caster Level, 7 uses remain
Casting Produce Flame for 4 minutes or 4 fireballs, whichever happens first.
Finding no better place to maneuver himself among the water, he forgoes his move action for this turn. Next action is when I can launch a fireball at it!

The Pharasmin quickly called upon her grim goddess favor, to ensure Yasmin might have a chance to survive another blow Cast my CLW spell (not from the wand)
CLW: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Rallos, Greyface, try to bring it down! But remember there's no shame into retreating so we can die another day! Pertreeko, as soon as possible, call in some bestial reinforcement!
Most people would have said "so we can live another day".... But Sister Zalinsel is not "most people".
