Appearance and Personality:
Like many in her family, Yasmin is tall for a halfling, with some human blood likely to be found in her bloodline. She sports brown curly hair, hazel eyes, olive skin, and slightly pointed ears. She has a penchant for gaudy jewelry, but otherwise prefers more practical, masculine Kelish dress--the long tunics and loose garments that help to shelter from the sun. Rejecting any notion of a veil, she sports a headwrap to keep her hair back when adventuring.

The most noticeable thing about Yasmin is probably not her at all, but the human-sized brown and taloned bird of prey that she's with--and often seen riding. Knowledgeable folk might recognize the creature as a young Roc, a creature of legend that, in full size, is said to prey on elephants.

Yasmin is boastful, curious, and loyal. She thirsts for adventure and delights in taking risks to prove herself; and yet she is surprisingly protective of others. She has a soldier's foul tongue, but a mother's heart, even if she is just a young adult. She's likable, though not entirely trustworthy, hates being bored, and fears being forgotten.

Crag, her Roc companion, is feisty and independent. He enjoys gliding, preening, and preying on unsuspecting rabbits. He really appreciates the fact that Yasmin helps pick pests off his back and magically heals his battle wounds.

Background:
Yasmin is the descendant of halfling slaves who were said to have fled Taldor generations ago for a measure of freedom in Qadira. Her parents joined a nomadic community led by the Akbars, and growing up, Yasmin how to live off the land. She even came to be an apprentice to a druid and learned some simple nature magics, though to her disappointment, the druid never revealed any true druidic secrets--perhaps because she adhered stubbornly to her community's worship of Sarenrae.

There was a tradition amongst the nomadic tribe that the men would leave their community for a time to go out into the world. This was their opportunity to both earn a living and find a wife. Yasmin had only sisters, not brothers. And as the eldest, Yasmin made a fateful decision to also leave her parents, her sisters, and her community. She didn't really expect or care to find a husband. But having an adventurous spirit and wanting to help support her parents and younger siblings, Yasmin struck off.

Yasmin found herself in the role of a camp follower--a civilian who hung around soldiers for livelihood and profit. It was not exactly the type of "tribe" that a nomad was supposed to follow. But the profit was there. Yasmin was a plenty good cook, and did not begrudge the hard labor of laundering clothing. Soldiers were demanding both (and more things besides, but Yasmin was not one to sell her body for coin). What made her new job most worthwhile was seeing the whirling dervishes in action--warriors whose effortless grace was matched only by their lethality. She dreamed of being one herself, though no soldier seemed to take her dream seriously.

Yasmin's life would take its most remarkable turn the day that her company of warriors spied a giant nest up a tall cliff. "A roc nest," they said with a mix of awe and fear, as they goaded each other to approach. None of the soldiers really dared climb the steep ravine only to face the likely wrath of a massive bird. But Yasmin dared. As a halfling living close to the land, she felt quite comfortable with the climb, and she was sure that a Roc omelete would net her a small fortune with the soldiers.

So Yasmin climbed warily up to hide nearby. As mother departed, she moved quickly toward the eggs in the nest. Yet to her surprise, one of the eggs had just hatched, as out came a rather large bird! "Ooh, nice birdy," she said, offering some jerky and trying to be friendly so that she wouldn't be eaten. After admiring the experience of befriending a baby roc, Yasmin decided a hasty retreat would be best before mother roc arrived. And yet the "little" hatching followed her rather than staying in the nest. Soon, Yasmin realized that she had somehow gotten herself a baby roc companion.

"You are going to cost a fortune to feed," remarked Yasmin, though the caring halfling warmed up easily to the task. And it turned out that having a pet roc would reap quite a few rewards, not the least of which was earning her some respect amongst the soldiers. Doors opened to a new life as a whirling dervish, one Yasmin would embrace with gusto. She became quite skilled with the scimitar, though her method of combat was certainly unorthodox. The small halfling would do battle astride Crag, her growing roc companion. And when they got close, Yasmin would sometimes leap off from the saddle--moving underneath or sometimes even on top of her foes! Some thought it madness, but as far as Yasmin was concerned, close-quarters fighting was the best way for the short halfling to overcome her foes' threatening reach.

When a new commander came to lead her troop, the unorthodox halfling and her roc companion found themselves suddenly unwelcome. But before she departed, a friendly soldier had shown her a letter, one explaining that the Truther & Trathis Mining and Excavation Company', based out of Katapesh itself, had put out a somewhat significant amount of gold and treasure in reward for aiding their attempts to breach the mine and recover a lost member of one of their earlier expeditions. Seizing on the opportunity, Yasmin decided to see what this place had to offer.

-Intrepid Volunteer: Like many free halflings, you volunteered readily for military service or an adventuring career and met other halflings who showed you how to make up for your small size. Choose one Strength-based skill [Climb] or one combat maneuver. You can use your Dexterity modifier in place of your Strength modifier to calculate your total modifier for that skill check or combat maneuver check.
-Dirty Fighter: You wouldn’t have lived to make it out of childhood without the aid of a sibling, friend, or companion you could always count on to distract your enemies long enough for you to do a little bit more damage than normal. That companion may be another PC or an NPC (who may even be recently departed from your side). When you hit a foe you are flanking, you deal 1 additional point of damage (this damage is added to your base damage, and is multiplied on a critical hit). This additional damage is a trait bonus.
-Gold Finger: Your family comes from a long, proud tradition of housebreaking and thievery. You are a strong part of that tradition. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Disable Device and Sleight of Hand checks, and one of these skills (your choice) becomes a class skill for you.
