Is that your final answer? :D

Liberty's Edge

Sure, why the heck not. There are worse things than dying. :)

Yes, basically a vulcan who doesn't follow Surak. He's still more logical than humans, but doesn't fake lack of emotions.

Since Samy is taking Sec/Tact, and that was one of my two, I'll take the other and go with First Officer. (If nobody wants to be captain, I'll go captain, but captain might work better as an NPC since he won't be going on away missions).

Sovereign Court

So:

Chief Med: YoricksRequiem
Chief Eng: Snorb
Chief Tac: Samy

Ensign Sciller of Security reporting in. Fresh out of Starfleet Academy half a year ago, but was abruptly transferred from my first posting to this ship for reasons not disclosed.

Sovereign Court

Greetings Ensign, put on a red uniform and take your post at the tactical console.

But Worf/Tasha gold compliments my hair much better.

Sovereign Court

Wait. It's 2370. Yeah. Security is dressed in gold. My bad. Gold it is then. And here's a rank pin :D

I will treasure it even though it is the least ostentatious piece of jewelry I own.

Sovereign Court

Btw, I was thinking of roleplaying everyone's transfer to the Akira class ship. Privately through messages.

Btw, we need a name for her. Any ideas?

USS Lake Geneva (NCC-1975)
USS Seattle (NCC-2009)
USS Tolkien (NCC-1892)

Sovereign Court

OOOH, I like USS Tolkien :D

Tolkien It is :) An apt name too.

Actually,
The Akira's were named after the Akira Anime. So if you're going to use a person's name, you should go for an Anime celeb.

I put forth

USS Miyazaki (NCC-1941)
USS Otomo (NCC-1954)

That's a nice touch too, the thematic connection with Japan.

Well, Otomo was one of the directors of Akira, and Miyazaki of course is one of the most well known anime directors/producers around (Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away).

Sovereign Court

Damn, now I'm torn.

I say let it percolate for a while, give time for others to throw in their suggestions too. You don't have to decide it right now.

I second Miyazaki over Tolkien.

I am in favour of this - I suppose this means that this is our first mission together and presumably none of us know each other.

Why wouldn't the Captain be able to go on away missions?

Also, you missed someone, Hama! Here's what I have for the current staffing:

Current Roster
Position - Player - Species
First Officer - mdt - Vulcan
Chief Science Officer - Darkfire142 - Orion
Chief Medical Officer - YoricksRequiem - Trill
Chief Engineer - Snorb - (Species?)
Tactical Ensign - Samy - (Species?)

Available
Pending an unestablished max number of players. Any of these could be NPCs
Captain
Chief Tactical
Counselor
Helmsman
Transporter Chief

Sovereign Court

True.

I'm creating the PbP thread. People can come as they make characters.

One of the big changes that occurred with TNG and forward was the requirement for first officers to keep the captain on the ship.

If you think about it, it's really stupid for the captain to be on every away mission (he's in charge of the ship, responsible for it, and also theoretically the most senior, wisest, and most highly trained officer).

One of the things in the first season was Riker stopping Picard often even when he wanted to go on a mission. The Captain should only be going on Diplomacy missions and other 'show the flag' type things. Never on investigations or hazardous duty.

Kat is human.

The procedures that are useful/applicable to a 1000 person Galaxy class starship may or may not be useful/applicable to a small exploration vessel.

Our ship might not have all the roles that something like the Federation flagship has -- might not even *need* all of those roles. Many of them might be combined. Of course, the first concern is what is fun for the players.

Sovereign Court

Samy is chief tactical. Since it's a new crew. And aptitude tests and stuff.

And how will captain then punch out ugly aliens and romance the pretty ones?

I was torn on the role of captain from the beginning. Should I have him/her be an NPC, a truly senior officer with a new and untested crew, or let a player be captain. Still torn about it to be honest.

I say NPC at first, eventually let a player work their way up to it. That way we can have a dramatic storyline where the captain dies / is (dis)honorably discharged / missing in action / whatever.

Silver Crusade

Captain, would love to play a Betazoid Captain

Yeah I'd stick with an NPC captain at first. You can always kill them off later, and as mdt says, it's not like the Captain and First Officer could both be on an away mission at the same time, so for our purposes the First Officer will probably be "acting" Captain most of the time anyway?

Sovereign Court

Jonny, would you be ok with being first officer for a while and then becoming captain a little later?

Oh... uhm, hmm.. ok, I'll just uh... well, apparently I'll do nothing... :(

Have fun ya'll

Sovereign Court

What? Ah yeah> Sorry
Then the plan goes as first mentioned
Sorry sorrry sorry

I'm very very tired at the moment.

Jonny Captain
Mdt First officer

SOrry
Soorry

mdt noooooo you must play

Sorry, not trying to be a pain, just wasn't sure I was in after that... That's all. I didn't want to push too hard.

Sovereign Court

God, I am not thinking straight at all. Going to bed now. Haven't slept in like 25 hours.

Current Roster
Position - Player - Species
Captain - Jonny...Panic - Betazoid
First Officer - mdt - Vulcan
Chief Science Officer - Darkfire142 - Orion
Chief Medical Officer - YoricksRequiem - Trill
Chief Engineer - Snorb - (Species?)
Tactical Ensign - Samy - Human

No no, It was completely my fault. Always wanted you in one of my games :)

Sovereign Court

I have fixed the senior NPC officer problem. You'll be accompanied by an admiral for a first few missions. It'll be ok though. He won't interfere with the ship processes, just be there as an observer.

I have realized that finding vulcan male artwork that isn't Spock or Sarek is next to impossible. :(

Female vulcan artwork (some of which is not cheesecake even) is a lot easier. *sigh* I will either have to go without artwork or change genders. :(

There is vulcan artwork on these boards?

That reminds me. I have a custom plugin I wrote for Google Chrome for a couple of Star Wars games that replaces avatars on here with custom ones. I'm intending to use it for at least my character since I assume the paizo selection for "things resembling trills" will be null, and I can just generate myself a character in Star Trek Online (which might be a good approach for you, too, mdt?) - so if anyone else wants to use it as well, once we get underway you can send me artwork and your alias name and I'll get it all incorporated and happy.

[EDIT] Example Image of older version from my Star Wars game

No, on the internet.

Elves work fine for vulcans. :)

Look for the androids, they have markings on them that would work well for the trill's spots.

I say change genders. I don't want this to be a sausage fest!

I'll be going female as well, for what it's worth, haha.

Offering Grrazz as Ensign, Ship's Marines.

Kazzinti race. (I do believe there was some talk of Rodenberry allowing Niven and Pournell's race into Star Trek at one point. I know the name is used in Star Fleet Battles)

An officer acting in concert with Ensign Samy. Having more than one gold shirt to shoot at on away missions seems like good planning.

They contracted with Niven/Pournell to add the Kzinti in. However, it was only in the saturday morning Trek cartoon.

There's always Caitians though.

They were a species related to Kzinti. Niven confirmed it himself.

Interestingly enough, the two cat girls Kirk was with in the first reboot movie were Caitians.

Captain Problem solutions:

1) Have someone of higher autority onboard, half the duties can be passed to him/her/it/them.

2) Something during the missions require the Captain to beam down, then **** happen.

2.a) Go Piccard and have a specific skills set that almost no one else have.

With respect to Vulcans that didn't accept logic: Here are some more:

1. Separated a long time ago: Romulans (this is the canonical origin of the Roomulans -- they NEVER accepted the reforms of Surak). On rare occasions, exiles wind up in the Federation (the only one I know of that appeared on screen committed suicide in a TNG episode, but another one is mentioned in DS9).
2. The one who was the main adversary for much of Star Trek V ("Let me feel your pain . . ." -- and had a figure somewhat resembling Bill Clinton, too).

*Bows formally* Thank you for the link and correct spelling.

I do much prefer the various book cover illustrations of said species, though. :)

Some nice Liz Danforth illustrations here from the 'Ring world' RPG

As for the "Captain" problem, though it adds some what to the 'level' of crewing....

An Admiral, for what ever reason, is aboard and over seeing things (Insert DM's nefarious plot hook for more adventure) and hence the 'extra' layer of supervision. So, now the DM gets to 'command' for a while as the player Captain settles in and eventually....

*Ponders just what is in cargo bay 13 and why there are 'Warning'/No unauthorized personnel' signs all over the area...*

Looking forwards to serving along side all other gentle-species.

*Bows*

Kind of like these...

(Fake?) Star Trek Book Cover

Book Cover

As to the spelling, it's a bit strange. Kzin is the name of the empire, if I remember correctly, and Kzinti is the name of the race. So Man/Kzin wars is what most people remember from the book covers. I'd be willing to bet they went with Kzin as it was smaller and easier to pronounce. :)
