I'm planning to run a Star Trek game that would mostly focus on the social aspect as well as the wanderlust of exploration.
Players would take the roles of bridge crew (captain, first officer and so on)
They would be crew of an Akira Class federation starship dubbed U.S.S. [To be determined by the players]
On an exploration mission.
Characters can be of any federation species they want to be.
As the game will have a large narrative component, crunchy bits will be brought down to a minimum.
As of now, I am looking for players which will play the roles of:
Captain
First officer
Chief engineer
Chief medical officer
Chief security officer
Cheif science officer
You can suggest other members of the crew.
As the game will, sort of, be episodic in form, attendance will not be mandatory so if you cannot post all the time, you won't be removed from the game.
This style of game will also support guest stars (who knows, they may become permanent fixtures too)
Anyone interested?

I'm very, very interested in this idea.
Couple of questions.
The Akira is primarily a quick warship, rather than an exploration or science vessel ala the Enterprise. Is it safe to assume that I wouldn't be out of place submitting a more scholarly character? You mentioned exploration, but I'm curious what the anticipated research / combat ratio would be like. I'm probably leaning towards the Medical / Engineering / or Science officer.
What timeframe are we in? I'm guessing maybe turn of the 25th century or somewhere around there? Anything happening in the galaxy that we'd need to know about?

Around 2470.
This Akira has been retrofitted for exploration, and I wanted a smaller, more intimate ship and crew.
It is absolutely not out of place.
I'm still in the process of reading up on the events that are significant in the period.
Memory Alpha is your friend. And since this is a joint narrative, I'll be accepting player suggestions.

The Prime Universe parts of Star Trek '09 would have happened by now (2387, so Hobus blewed up Romulus and Remus, Spock and Nero are missing presumed dead...) but what else would have happened between then and 2470?
Would Star Trek Online be canon? ...that would make the Sovereign and Defiant over a century old ;_;
Please God don't include anything involving Star Trek: Destiny. That whole series was incredibly stupid.

AFAIC, Enterprise, TOS, TNG, Voyager and Deep Space 9 are canon.
Sooo, to answer questions:
Has the game rule system been specified yet (other than already being mentioned as rules light)?
Not yet, although i believe there won't be much need for one, I'll take suggestions though. Like I said, the game will focus on character interactions.
I was thinking of maybe using FATE, but even that seems constraining in a manner of speaking. You specify the roles on the ship, but shouldn't you also have characters specifying which areas of 20th century American history they are going to focus on? After all, that's 83% of Starfleet Academy's curriculum.
What?

Did I say 2470? DARN. I mean 2370. And I can't change it now. DARN DARN DARN...

Pssst . . . I think that was supposed to be a joke.

2370
Oooh, that's TNG Season 7/DS9 Season 2. :D
All righty, I'm in, but I'll have to think of a concept. (And just think, only three more years until we get the First Contact uniforms! XD)
EDIT: The Akira is a fine fine ship. I need to level up more in STO so I'm actually allowed to fly one and abandon it ten levels later for THE DEFIANT

I'm having the literal worst time trying to decide on one character. I'm leaning towards playing a Trill (or half-Klingon. because It sounds like that might open up some really interesting roleplaying opportunities.), but I'm still up in the air between Engineering and Medical. All I've managed to do so far is rule out Science and dozens of species. >_>

Very interested, big Star Trek fan here. I could honestly go for any role that isn't being covered. Would actually be sort of interested in starting low, Ensign or Lieutenant Junior Grade, and working my way up over time.
What are the pros of playing medical? What are the cons?
The same for Engineering?
Medical would probably be one of the more social roles, since almost by definition you need another person to be working on/with. An Engineer's work could be a lot more lonely if you're not prepared for it.

Would you allow someone to play an Orion (One of those Green-Skinned humanoids). I'ed probably play one of the rare intellectuals, a daughter of one of the researchers at the Institute of Cosmology on Orion 1 who has decided to go into Star Fleet to explore the universe. Now the problem is Orion Women have some kind of pheromone that makes them dead sexy to men and tend to make women rather ill. Wonder if there is probably some kind of Pheromone suppressant drug in this time that she can take regularly so she can work on a ship without causing a stink?

We can work something out. Although I think that was fixed.
EDIT: It wasn't but I like the Idea so we can work something out.

What are your thoughts for a department being represented by an Ensign/junior officer? Like Chekov was tactical Ensign. Or Geordi was Lt JG when TNG began. I wouldn't mind being Engineering or Science, but I would prefer to start off as Ensign/LtJG. Since you mentioned wanting a smaller ship and crew it might make sense to have some stations crewed by lower ranks?

I'm ok with that. It's a new crew, untested and still finding their equilibrium. Ranks can come later.
Cyborg? (that doesn't have the OP'ness of the Borg)
I don't know. It's 2370, so there have already been unassimilated Borg. You could do that I guess.
What exactly did you have in mind?

1. I wonder if the phermone works differently on people who are not heterosexual . . .
2. Besides, the way I see it, you don't have to be an Orion to make a stink . . . although I don't think most people would consider mine to be sexy . . . .| mdt |
If I remember correctly...
Orion's had several ethnicities. Red, Pink, and Green. Pink's could pass for human. Green's were barbarian tribes, which is why they called them 'animal women'. They had pheremones, but they weren't like the Deltan's from the first movie, which drove humanoids insane with lust (they were psychic more than pheremone driven if I remember correctly). They just were much more powerful than humans.
Anything that pheremone is scent driven, and can be handled as simply as something you spray on that dampens or counteracts it (we do this today with deodorant). That's not to say that visiting a green orion girl's quarters would be safe, as her pheremones would saturate her quarters. But as far as walking around the ship, people might get a very mild tick up around her, but nothing more than a human could generate.
Been thinking it over, I would be good with playing a Separatist Vulcan, if you would be interested in that. Separatist Vulcans were basically an offshoot political group who rejected suppression of emotions. I forget which Trek novel they were introduced in, but they were mentioned at least once in the TNG when Sarek was on board the ship, not in a complimentary fashion if I remember correctly (memory may be fuzzy).
Either first officer or security/tactical...

It didn't explore the political ramifications as much as the personal ones, but Enterprise had an episode with Vulcans who accepted emotions as well.

She can take some supplements which stop the pheromone from being produced. If she forgets though, the fun starts :D
So you want to play an emotional Vulcan. Who does not follow the teachings of Surak.
