Indeed. Marduk has no conscience, sooooo...

GM chadius |

Vermund gets a sense of worry as he notices the party starting to relax, as if he's no longer a threat. "What...you'll never take me alive..."
A poor choice of words, he realizes as Marduk charges from the corner of his eye and cleaves him from the nave to the chops in a single blow. His last gasp of breath is spent mumbling... "Betsy..."
One of the insects seem to chitter on reaction.
Combat unsurprisingly over
The two goons carried a total of 2 masterwork warhammers, 2 daggers, and 2 sets of studded leather armor.
Vermund wore a set of masterwork hide armor that is surprisingly salvagable despite Marduk's cleaving. There is also a masterwork sickle, a sling and a potion of cure moderate wounds.
The book shelves are, unsurprisingly, filled with books about various insects, animals that eat insects, how to raise your own ant farm, and Vermund's journal. He rambles on about various people he's had to kill because they hurt his forest, and how he had to flee from the law. Eventually he rambles about his time in the Shadow Lodge and how they gave him sanctuary for he and his insects.
As you leave the room...
You smell something terrible coming from the ground. You notice a trapdoor at your feet that will give way as soon as you step on it.
Disable Device DC 20 to make it safe to cross.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 "Ho there! Watch out friends, there is a trap door here. Brunhilde, can you work around this?"
If anyone is injured, I suggest drinking that potion now rather than store it. If no one is injured, one of the melee should take it.

![]() |

Three looks at one of the masterwork warhammers, and satisfied with its quality hooks it onto her belt.
Nemis points out the trap and Three nods approvingly. She places a friendly hand on Brunhilde's shoulder, which shines with a faint light, just before the princess starts to work on the trap door. "Good luck."
Bit of luck: roll twice and take the better for a round
While the others deal with the trap, she examines the shelf of insects, standing on tip toe to see the higher human-height shelves. "Any butterflies?" she thinks out loud.

![]() |

"Betsy? Who be Betsy?" asks Marduk. She walks around the room calling at loud repeatedly "Betsy, Betsy, Betsy!"

Thanks Three! I totally didn't get that you were using it on Brunhilde... also such a sweet ability!
With the trapdoor about to collapse over her Brunhilde acts quickly in a split second. Somewhat amazed at her own reflexes Brunhilde realizes she was aided by divine intervention. She turns to Three amazement on her face.
You...you swayed the gods didn't you? You are truly blessed...

GM chadius |

Brunhilde swears she hears something as she's about to step on the trapdoor. Her allies didn't hear anything, but Brunhilde takes a closer look and figures out how to seal it shut.
The party walks past several beds in what seems to be the living quarters. Vermund's filthy, insect-littered is quickly identified. The only thing of importance is one crumpled up note near it.
“Do your duty. Protect the lodge. Your insect interests come second to that. —Melkorka”
As you enter the living quarters, you hear people groaning and someone laughing in the room beyond.

![]() |

"What foul things lie beyond. Be wary my friends, we've faced multiple traps already, I assume there will be more. Let us take them by surprise..."
Nemis stands ready for battle with whomever is beyond.

![]() |

And now goupil tranforms into vermund. with the medaillon, Mark and Gisèle.
And enter the room.

Three smiles. "Just Traveler's Luck."
She readies her spear but tries not to look too threatening as Goupil transforms once again, ready to get the jump on the unsuspecting Shadow Lodge agents beyond.

GM chadius |

Goupil takes the form of the ragged insectkeeper Vermund and enters the room.
This ice cavern has clearly been dug out. The smell quickly changes from dead insects to a different kind of garbage as you see two goblinoids in the room. One is a goblin with a short sword and a short bow, standing on a crate and checking on the various chained humans in the room. One of the men in the room matches your description of Skagni.
The other creature is some kind of goblinoid, with multiple vestigial goblin arms jutting from his shoulders. He laughs as you arrive and turns to face Vermund.
"Haha! Vermund! You bring more slaves to sell? " the big goblin walks up to Goupil. His breath reeks of some weeks old stew. "Hmm. They're not slaves. What's going on?"

![]() |

Nemis tries to hide his disgust, and thanks his training for his straight face. The psychic prepares to dirty his psyche by thrusting it into this things's mind.

oh... I was just doing the tour to the new friends of Gisèle. She's quite lonely you know.
So How are the slaves doing?
Goupil does his best to impersonate Vermund. It almost seem that Vermund was posseding him.
I need to do it. Activate bardic performance: fascinate! will dc 15.

GM chadius |

Haha! Goupil, you're the life of the party here.
Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
"The slaves are strong, except for this wimp." The glorfan slaps Skagni. "But they say the smart ones sell better. Momma Betsy always say, 'sell smart ones for more profit, but don't give them their books.' And me says, 'Okay mom. When we find goblin dad?' And mom says 'Me strong troll! Daddy weak goblin!' and slaps me. That hurt! But that was nothing compared to the ritual that helped me grow these arms! It began in the temple of Lamashtu..."
The glorfan drops his guard, closely following Goupil.
His goblin assistant keeps his short bow ready and rolls her eyes. She's heard this life story before, and it's still boring.
I'll say you guys have the element of surprise while the Glorfan is fascinated. The assistant is aware of your presence and is not flatfooted, though.

Three blesses Marduk, who takes this chance to tear into the Glorfan. He doesn't stand a chance against Marduk's mighty assault, and her axe drops him in one fell swoop.
His assistant takes a deep gulp and looks toward the exit, clearly planning to flee.
Skagni mumbles "Finish him quickly...he heals quickly..." The small arms sticking out of his shoulder wave frantically and start holding bits of his flesh together as it binds together.

i wonder if it is a fast healing or a régénération effect. thinks Goupil.

GM chadius |

d20pfsrd is odd and contradictory on this. It says Bards have to choose targets, but it also says everyone who sees and hears the bard makes a will save. 3.5 said everyone who sees and hears the Bard has to make a Will Save, but it also said any violent action immediately breaks the effect.
Eeeehh, Rule 0! I think the assistant would fall under the effect.
Goblin's Will Save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13
The goblin seems distracted by Goupil's performance long enough to drop her guard. At least until she reacts to her boss crumpling.
Goupil remembers that glorfans heal quickly, but they can be killed through conventional means. Fast Healing, not regeneration

"Skagni I presume? We are Pathfinders, and our meeting is long overdue. Before we exchange stories, are you okay? Is there any other immediate danger? What is in the room beyond?"

GM chadius |

Knowing there is no way she could survive at this point, the goblin gives up. "Aaah..me just following orders?"
Combat Over
Freeing the slaves results in cheers of excitement from the men. Despite their malnourishment and fatigue, they find the energy to give a hooray to the party. Rognvald Skagni in particular, is thrilled to see you all come to the rescue. "See men? These are true Pathfinders, not those frauds who attacked your home. I told you they would rescue us!"
"These men are from the Blood Ram tribe," he starts. "They said Pathfinders raided their village, killed everyone they could find and captured the rest here. I told them that didn't make sense. Told them these Shadow Lodge scum probably pulled that stunt off. But now they see what true Pathfinders are made of!" He cheers.
"Do you have the documents I requested?" He inquires. "Excellent, excellent! I'll have plenty of time to research them. But I think you need to get to the Keep of the Huskarl King as soon as you can. The Shadow Lodge leader spoke of some grand kind of weapon there. I don't know the details of this weapon, but I do know where the keep is. I'll gladly give you directions there."
There is a door on the south, still closed. "I haven't seen inside the room. Neither did that...thing." Skagni glances at the fallen goblins. "I don't know what's in there."
A small, unlocked wooden chest sits in the northeast corner behind the supply boxes. Inside are five potions of cure light wounds, a wand of cure light wounds with seven remaining charges, and a scroll of flaming sphere.
We can call it here, or you can see what's behind the southern door.

![]() |

Leaving an unopened door is very un-Pathfinderish... our first mandate is to explore.

![]() |

"Skagni speaks the truth. While I certainly can't vouch for all of my order, pillaging is not our path. We are explorers and seekers."
He turns to Skagni, "Tell me all you can of this "weapon", and spare no detail."
Anyone injured should drink those potions now. "Who can use this scroll?"

GM chadius |

The goblin hobbles her way out, covered in goo but glad to be alive.
As Three searches the area for anything suspicious, Skagni talks to Nemis.
"It's called Jerdek's OW" Skagni feels his broken index finger. "Sorry, the glorfan there decided to make an example out of me for talking too much. And I haven't eaten in days. Makes it a little hard to think. Maybe once we get out of here I can talk some more?"
Three doesn't find anything suspicious about the door.
Upon opening the door, the blast of cold from the room beyond is sharp and shocking. The room seems dimly lit by a soft blue light and the floor twinkles as though wet. In the south wall stands a tall, slim door made of a dark, bluish metal and carved with hundreds of runes and sigils. Looking up, the room disappears into a cold, cloudy haze.
The floor is slippery, so any Acrobatics checks increase by 5. Additionally each square costs two squares of movement to travel, and you need an Acrobatics check of 10 to run or charge.
If you enter, who is entering first?
