Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
Round 2 Buffs/Conditions: Iron Skin (+4 Natural AC for 7 minutes AC27); Inspire Courage (+2 attack & damage) & Bolster (+2 attack and Damage, and 6 Temp HP for 3 rounds)
Albrέkt howls in frustration as he realises the elemental holds a significant tactical advantage on him.
The vampyr drops his heavy blade (Free Action), then moves to the wall and begins climbing toward the creature 20ft Move to wall, then 20ft climb
Climb: 1d20 + 5 - 6 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 5 - 6 + 8 = 18
Sariana Nightsong |
Sariana scampers along the ceiling, running completely upside down as she leaps into the elemental.
Grapple: 1d20 + 15 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 15 + 2 + 2 = 26
GM Fanguar |
Molasbar's projectile connects, but doesn't seem to cause any damage. Sariana leaps towards the elemental, but fails to hang onto the creature CMD is 36
Seeing Molasbar as a threat, it swoops by with another flyby attack:
Attack vs Molasbar: 1d20 + 16 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 16 + 3 = 36 Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (4, 5) + 5 = 14 + Electricity: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Everyone is up.

Rose Silversting |
"Time for some target practice," says Rose. She begins firing her bow between breaths.
Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 + 2 + 3 - 2 = 28; Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 2 + 3 = 14
Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 10 + 2 + 3 - 2 = 31; Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 + 3 = 9
Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 10 + 2 + 3 - 2 = 30; Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 2 + 3 = 11
19 damage after DR.
Molasbar |
Mirror Image vs. the attack, 1 = Real Molasbar. 1d5 ⇒ 1
Molasbar stumbles back, hair standing from the shock administered to him.
He murmurs "Either it is lucky, or it can see through illusions."
He considers the creatures movements as it struck, still looking for a weakness.
Kirin check 1d20 + 8 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 8 + (2) = 20 d6 is for Inspiration.
Another shuriken.
To hit 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 2 = 21
Damage 1d2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6
That looks like 1 damage after DR.
Xanos Doom |
GM, it looks like you forgot the Curse when the elemental attacked Molsabar.
Sariana Nightsong |
Unable to chase the creature Sari leaps through the air to pummel it with a mighty kick, before unleashing a 'lightning' fast series of blows.
Flying Kick: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 12 + 1 + 2 = 21 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Flurry1: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 12 + 1 + 2 = 16 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Flurry2: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 12 + 1 + 2 = 16 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Flurry3: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 1 + 2 = 17 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Wow...
Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
@GMR: Albrέkt's trying to scuttle up the walls and across the ceiling to engage the elemental with his touch attacks (limited I know, but I'm bereft of ideas...) at 20ft Climbing per round am I literally going to spend the encounter scuttling after it? Not sure how close or how many rounds of spiderclimbing are required to get a point where it can be attacked?
Xanos Doom |
Casting Glitterdust. DC 19 Will save or be blinded.
Xanos conjured a cloud of swirling silver dust on top of the elemental.
GM Fanguar |
@Xanos: You are correct.
Curse (molasbar attack): 1d20 + 16 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 16 + 3 = 22
@Albrekt: Feel free to try an attack this round.
Wills save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Wills save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Blinded, the creature flails around erratically. Realistically, it's not going to be able to line up a flyby attack.
Everyone is up.

Xanos Doom |
Alright, now that I have a prayer of hitting this thing...
Infusion Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Xanos takes 7 damage to Add Sickening to his spell
The blood in Xanos' eyes seemed to boil, steaming into a crimson energy.
He simply stared at the creature, then his eyes erupted. For an instant there was a line between them, like a blot of nothing surrounded in deep reddish energy. It left an after-image in the air like too long looking at the sun.
Enervation, Ranged Touch vs Flat Footed: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Negative Levels: 1d4 ⇒ 3
So now it has a -3 to every check, loses 15 HP, and counts as 3 HD lower for all dependent variables (like DCs)
And it is Sickened for one round (additional -2 to just about everything)
Molasbar |
Kirin check 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 2 + (4) = 31 d6 is for Inspiration.
Another shuriken.
To hit 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 2 = 17
Damage 1d2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6
I'm pretty sure that's a success on the Kirin ID of the elemental. So now he can use a swift action to add twice his Intelligence modifier to damage, he gains +2 on saving throws against the creature's attacks, and a +2 dodge to AC vs. its AOOs.
Sariana Nightsong |
Sariana again leaps at the creature, spinning kicks and punches like a dervish.
Flying Kick: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 12 + 1 + 2 = 33 Damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 2 = 14
Flurry 1: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 12 + 1 + 2 = 31 Damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 2 = 8
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 12 + 1 + 2 = 30 Damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 2 = 10
Flurry 3: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 + 2 = 26 Damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
Hanging from the ceiling akin to an ironclad spider, Albrέkt rakes at the elemental with gauntlet wreathed in sickly green flame;
Melee Touch of Corruption: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2) = 11 +DC15 of Sickened for 7 rounds
Melee Touch of Corruption: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 5) = 14 +DC15 of Sickened for 7 rounds - IF already Sickened from above, then DC15 Fort Save or contracts Red Ache disease
Xanos Doom |
Xanos collected the elemental's heart and blood in an alchemical sample jar.
Do elementals leave behind usable corpses? Can I animate this?
Sariana Nightsong |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Sari takes advantage of her greater speed and scoops a fingerful of elemental blood from the floor, before sticking her finger in her mouth and sucking on it like a lollipop.
"It tingles!" She reports with a slight expression of surprise. "I can almost feel it fizzing. This is spectacular!"
Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
Albrέkt scuttles to the floor and recovers his heavy blade, as Sariana extols the virtues of the elemental's blood, the ironclad vampyr's own hunger is piqued.
He approaches Xanos as the necromancer busies himself collecting the elemental viscera. With drool forming on his jagged fangs the brutish undead beckons for his share;
"Let me tazte der elementares blut too Old Vun..."
Xanos Doom |
"Do what you want with the rest. I only need the heart." Xanos said, finishing cutting the static-charged ball of unearthly viscera and sealing it in a jar. He stood and moved on to look at the alter the elemental was protecting.
GM Fanguar |
@Xanos: Consider it more of an ectoplasm residue. No you may not animate it. You still have a treant and a minotaur to animate if you so choose.
The statue of Vetra-Kali is carved from hard green alabaster. He holds three knives and three bowls and leers eyeless over the altar before him. He presents a figure of brutal alien malice. The empty eye sockets are the same shape and size as the three emeralds you've found in the Horn.
The alter is scarred and stained black. It has channels cut in that feed into a basin etched with runes of corruption carved into its base.
Wrapped around the statue and alter are heavy silver chains that connect to a heavy seal pressed with the holy sunburst of blessed Mitra. This artifact prevents Ventra-Kali from manifesting on this plane. Removing it is your goal. Even so bound, the alter still radiates evil.
Xanos Doom |
Xanos stared at the statue and the seal for a time. Then one by one he fitted the gems into the statue's eyes.
Sariana Nightsong |
Sariana on the other hand retreats, pausing on the very threshold of the chamber. Whether it is fear of the Mitran magic, Vetra-Kali or simply her, oft expressed, distaste for gods in general that drives her, she clearly doesn't want to be there.
GM Fanguar |
Each gem begins to glow with a sickly green light when placed into its corresponding socket. Each of you is blessed with the knowledge of the boon provided by the gems when they reside in their proper place.
The eye of vigilance, when focused upon, allows the user to scry on any part of the horn.
They eye of hatred is on guard for any Mitran intrusion and will flash a warning is any divine Mitran magic is cast within the horn.
The withering eye returns the blessing of Vetra-Kali upon his temple. The eye desecrates the Horn (as per the spell, but is affects both undead and daemons)
With the placement of the eyes, there is a unerving chuckle that rises from the floor and the form of the the dread wraith Ezra the thrice damned coalesces in the room. "Well done pawns of Asmodeus. The blessing of Vetra-Kali fills our halls once more."
The wraith's form seems to swell, "Now remove the seal and let my lord's return be upon us."
While it speaks, the forms of Hexor and Vexor pop in the room. They look to you expectantly.
Xanos Doom |
"There are preparations to be made first. The Horn is vulnerable." Xanos said flatly.
Xanos Doom |
Xanos ignored the wraith, focusing instead on learning how to use the magics of the Eyes of Vetra-Kali. He explained how scrying worked, and how to focus the view of the eye towards specific areas.
"We should keep someone here on watch at all times, with an active Message spell to allow them to alert the rest of us should they spot something," Xanos said. "This will be the backbone of our defensive preparations."
Haruk |
Haruk also ignores the undead. For something that lived forever, it could use some more patience. "Good idea Xanos, perhaps one of our newly recruited minions could be stationed here?"
Not only does Haruk have some followers from leadership, but I believe we also get NPCs via our evil organization, yeah?
Molasbar |
Molasbar doesn't ignore the undead. Instead, a neat compartment of his mind starts working on solutions for the seemingly inevitable confrontation with them. He says to the others "Hexor and Vexor do not need sleep, and can teleport to us to warn us. The scry ability you described could be used for them to keep track of where we are, so they know where to go to get to us." He defers to Xanos and Haruk when he asks "Unless you had another priority for them?"
Extra-dimensional shock troopers for the win!
Xanos Doom |
"I do not. Excellent suggestion." Xanos said as he headed for the stairs.
I'm not sure who's in command of Hex and Vex. Have we bound them to us with their nameplates yet? Or is that still on our to-do list?
Rose Silversting |
As the others, including the vampires, have their attention drawn to the shrine, Rose heads to the elemental with a vial and starts collecting the blood. "Damn vampires just want to drink up the power source for our golem," she mumbles.
Once she's collected a good amount, she hands it off to Molasbar. "Speaking of shoring up our defenses, I believe your talents are well suited to awakening a magical servant."
Sariana Nightsong |
Sariana, standing well back from everything to do with Vetra-Kali catches Rose's mutterings but simply grins a toothy grin. When the cleric next passes she leans over and whispers.
"But it tastes so good..." before flicking her tongue into the aasimar's ear for a split second.
Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
At the wraith's chastisement Albrέkt hisses a harsh chuckle;
"You vud all do vell to heed der vords of Ezra Dreimal Verdammt. If der toten turns on us, minn einfluss may nicht spare you."
If he hears Rose's dissent on his feasting the fell plague knight does not react.
Instead he grins, basking in the newly awakened power of The Horn and the boon it gifts to the dead within its halls.
"Truly zhis isz now heim. Der power zhe Drittes Auga exzudes... It engorges me... From loin to fang..."
GM Fanguar |
Hexor and Vexor can be commanded by whomever has their corresponding amulets. There is a separate amulet for each, so they can have different commands. They are loyal to Vetra-Kali, so you don't need to be too careful around them, as long as you are working to free him.
For the sake of convenience, I'll just tell you that any water that is put into the basin of the alter will become unholy water. You need a dose of that for each day of the ritual. A simple detect magic will pick that up.
Re:The evil organization/leadership: put something into your profile so I have an idea of who's around. Something like Xanos' minion spoiler is fine.
Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
Not sure. Who has the amulets for Hexor and Vexor? Intimation as that we are going to give them commands regards guarding/overwatching the sanctum (if indeed they don't do that anyway). Whoever holds their leashes needs to chime in. If no-one wants them - give them to me :)
As the ecstasy of his feast fades, Albrέkt wipes his bloody maw and nods towards the hulking daemons;
"Vhat pflicht (tasks/duties) do ve schet our most prized daemons?"
Sariana Nightsong |
Sari doesn't like all this religious/outsider stuff. She doesn't want to be involved! :D
"Whatever." Sariana replies, "Nasty creatures."
Rose Silversting |
Could we fast forward through some of the ritual stuff? I don't have a specific evil plan. But I think we are going to find a blood relative for purpose of sacrifice. I believe we can awaken a golem. I know people also have crafting plans? @GM Fanguar--do you have any guidance on other issues we should be considering?
Sariana Nightsong |

Seconded. I'm really not fussed about the minutiae of performing them. Will happily do the kidnapping part but otherwise...
GM Fanguar |
I am literally OK with whatever you folks decide to do. I indicated months ago what you needed to do to get things started.
If you don't want to sacrifice the cultist you de-petrified. Then I already said that, yes you can get the other knot to find and kidnap a suitable replacement.
Too be honest, I'm beginning to feel that this AP isn't really suited to PbP. It really requires the PCs to be proactive to drive the narrative and it has a lot of planning and scheming in it. You get to be evil classes and there are lots of cool payoffs along the way, but it's going to be pretty painful to get there. I foresee a lot of stalls in the future.
I am happy to continue, but the AP isn't really designed for me to just tell you what to do at each point. (I mean, I can if you want me to , but that kind of defeats the point of playing it.) I am also perfectly happy to put a pin in this campaign and run something else that is more standard with you folks.
Xanos Doom |
How abotu we just fast forward though some stuff with some poetic licence? I'll take care of it here. If there's any issues with what I'm proposing, we can amend/retcon.
The next few days were productive. Hellhounds and a Nightmare were summoned. Mudmen were created in the depths of the Maw. Molsabar and Xanos finished their work on the Lyre of Building. Xanos' disembodied right hand had been playing it nearly non-stop since it was finished. The Horn was slowly rearranging itself, breaking down walls and building new ones, strengthening fortifications, preparing for the inevitable arrival of the forces they'd been recruiting.
Molsabar directed the efforts of the Lyre to repair the Horn's damaged traps, and dig out a few more based on Xanos' designs. Xanos completed the repair work on the damaged Golem and was nearly ready to throw the switch and wake it up.
Albrekt, Rose and Sarianna made additional trips to town, returning with cartloads of equipment hauled back by Albrekt's tireless charger. The Horn's magical larder was soon stocked and the Death's Head Tavern was ready to reopen business. Halthus the Flayer, their resident hundred year old, formerly petrified Torturer (having nothing else to do at the moment) was given a secondary job as their bartender. All he needed now were patrons, of one sort or the other.
While the ninth knot worked, the seventh knot was not busy either. They tracked down a suitable sacrifice whom they were convinced was a blood relative of a devoted Son of the Pale Horseman.
On their last supply trip, Sari, Rose and Albrekt returned with a caravan of attendees. Their recruitment efforts had paid off. There were not a lot of followers yet, but it was a start.
It was nearly time to begin the ritual.
Any issue with any of that? Anything to add?
Sariana Nightsong |
Sounds good to me. I have to agree with Gang, I'm finding this very hard to keep track of without being able to see/absorb all the information in one go. The pace of pbp conversation doesn't help!
This is a great group though so I'm sticking regardless :D If this does become too tough we could probably jump straight over to Helps Vengeance boil 3 without too much trouble! Swap archbaton Fez for Cardinal Thorn and you're pretty much done!
Xanos Doom |
Wrong thread, Sari.
Albrέkt Heißhungrig |
Presuming above from Xanos is acceptable...
Whilst in the city on Knot business, the fell vampyr visits upon the Orphanage in the guise of his kindly sage Opa Langenschlaf ("Grandfather Longsleep").
He will make a 200GP coin donation citing he wishes to fund the eduction of the orphanage's wards, and will also gift the Orphan Master Bergil Mott 2 Talingarde Military Medals (worth 90gp each) that were taken from Franz's Mott of Talingarde's effects. (Old Opa will presume that they are related and cite the recovered medals should perhaps reside with the family...
(Basically setting the "in" for Der Hungrige Kinder (The Hungry Children) down the line :)
Albrέkt ensures that there are some craftsmen amongst the new recruits, and upon arrival back at The Horn puts them to immediate use constructing a ornate coffin for him to nest in.
Regardless of other work to be carried out - the towering vampyr will stress upon the mortals the importance of the work, and the priority it is to be given (regardless of instructions tor the contrary from his fellow Knotters)...
