12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

We're beginning some mustering and lead-in activities before the hard-start-date of the 5th, so please hop on into Gameplay if you haven't already!

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

One of the best things about adventuring in a group is that there's someone to have your back when things have gone awry. And in a special like this there's tons of other Pathfinders who could help!

You guys right now have an aid token. While you have an aid token you can use it for one of these effects before passing it along to another table, or you can pass it along with its effects boosted by passing a check (or performing a listed action)!

Allied Offensive: A Pathfinder agent strikes a creature at the same time as the PC, increasing the damage dealt by one attack by 1d8 points. In addition, after the attack, anyone attacking the target is considered to be flanking it until the beginning of the attacker’s next turn.
To Boost (when passed to another table): Succeed at an attack roll against AC 17
Boosted Effect: +1d8 points of damage.

Burst of Healing: A Pathfinder agent heals all of the PCs of 1d6 points of damage.
To Boost: Expend one use of channel positive energy or cast one spell with the healing descriptor of 2nd level or higher. A PC must cast this spell, not simply activate a wand or scroll.
Boosted Effect: +2d6 points of damage healed.

Timely Inspiration: A Pathfinder agent provides the effects of a bard’s inspire courage bardic performance for 3 rounds. The competence bonus is +1.
To Boost: Expend 3 rounds of bardic performance or similar ability. Boosted Effect: Increase the competence bonus by 1.

Provide Knowledge (must be boosted to be used): Gain the benefits of a Knowledge skill check or Spellcraft skill check used to identify a magical item; the type and difficulty (Easy, Average or Hard) depend on the table granting the benefit.
To Boost:
Succeed at a Knowledge check of your choice, the result of the check (Easy, Average or Hard) should be noted on the Aid Token.

Provide Spellcasting (must be boosted to be used): Gain the benefits of a beneficial spell cast by an ally as listed on the Aid Token.
To Boost: Cast one of the following spells and note your PC’s name and caster level on the Aid Token: lesser restoration, neutralize poison, remove curse, or remove disease.
Only these spells may be granted. Expending resources that produce the effects of these spells, such as a paladin’s mercy class feature, may also grant these benefits.

These are best used quickly and passed on. If we can't use it, then we can try to boost it and pass it on. That way overall the tokens get used the most.

Sitting on them is a big waste of resources. If we pass, we can always get it back later.

I had that thought for Leena too, but I don't want to take the hit to CL or channel dice. I originally played her in a home game where the GM houseruled out spells above 3rd level, so it made more sense there. Might dip one level of bard instead for a knowledge boost.

GM Cwethan wrote:
While they certainly can be, I'm not sure I agree that light sources are by default attached to intersections, do you have a source?

Dancing lights "Depending on the version selected, you create up to four lights that resemble lanterns or torches (and cast that amount of light)"

Torch A torch burns for 1 hour, shedding normal light in a 20-foot radius and increasing the light level by one step for an additional 20 feet beyond that area (darkness becomes dim light and dim light becomes normal light).

20-foot radius.

Nearly all area of effects that reference a 'radius' come down to some version of one of the templates in the last link, and all of those radii templates originate from an intersection. In this way a character holding a torch can switch their torch from corner to corner of their space to shed slightly more or less light in the areas around them. Spells work in a similar fashion. "The point of origin of a spell is always a grid intersection."* Think of fireball or grease.

Most folks using dancing lights go with torches, or hooded lantern-like light, to keep things simple on the map and illuminate all directions at once--a radius (or, in the case of four lights, multiple overlapping radii) of effect.

There is though a case for allowing bullseye lantern-like light which would project cones from a single square, but that would only be in one particular direction, and not be quite as helpful in this instance. I have never actually seen this use in a game, but the vagueness of the term 'lantern' in the entry for dancing lights might technically allow for it.

Your honor, I rest my case. ;)

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

I buy that for Dancing Lights and similar things that pick a map point from which light radiates, but I think that to apply that to effects that emanate from a specific creature or object doesn't hold water.

For example, I don't think we have to pick a corner of Apollyanna's square that radiates courage.

In either case, since my ruling's the more generous one for you guys, I'll go ahead and stick with it for now until I can give this a more thorough reading.

GM Cwethan wrote:

Perhaps not, but that I think is the normal rule made for abstract simplicity sake. I'm not arguing the ruling itself, but do want to point it out. You could always use the reach area of effect templates if you wanted to demonstrate a center-focused light. Just remember that by putting the focus in the center the overall radius becomes closer to 12.5 feet. Not really an issue here, but down the road....

GM Cwethan wrote:

As for Apollyanna, remember this is an abstraction and that Polly can exist anywhere within that square (even though a few inches of her poke out at the top--a common enough problem for medium beings between 5-foot-1 and 7ish feet tall), it just represents the space she needs to move freely and fight effectively in, but because she is not a small gelatinous cube she does not exist everywhere in that square. If she happens to be closer to one edge than the other her aura probably goes with her. Plus, it's an aura, why not fluctuate it like the Van Allen belt.

That and well your honor, I probably do have a character somewhere who does have courage radiating out of their butt. ;)

The devil's advocate only works for the case of canonization :)

Prince of Law's advocate, thank you. Devil has all sorts of negative connotations, and the unenlightened are nervous enough because of the whole 'evil' subtype thing. People can be so judgemental about 'evil', but what about 'aquatic' or 'gnomes'? I find it racist. Remember: 'evil' is just 'live' spelled backwards, and we all want to live don't we?
